    Hi everyone, again I wasn't sure if this would offer any value but several of you asked for this video and enjoyed the laid back more chatty approach in my 'What I spent in 2021' video. As always my reasons will be different to yours, my priorities will likely be different to yours too - and that's totally fine! The whole point of saving for me, and of scrutinizing the way I spend, is to get the best value I can from my money, things that will truly add to or improve my life.

    I really liked this video and it’s always nice to see how other people prioritize spending their money. We’ve had a series of unexpected house expenses come up already this month so I’m reevaluating what we were planning to spend on and deciding if that is going to stay in the budget or maybe wait until later.
    As someone who bought a house in 2019 with plans to redo the kitchen, I’d strongly suggest waiting until the rest of the house has come together. We found that a few small tweaks to the kitchen were really all it needed to be charming old instead of funky old, once the rest of the house was done to our style. But definitely go ahead and get a dishwasher, those things are lifesavers!

      Thanks Adrienne, glad you enjoyed it. Yes life tends to throw curveballs at us! I had in my head that I didn’t need much in the way of clothes but after trying a few things on the other day I realised I had a lot of clothes - ones that I just won’t wear 🤦‍♀️😂 so I will need to allow some spending here.
      Yes no plans to do anything immediately. I think a lot of home improvement channels and Instagram accounts have taken off recently and almost normalised doing things immediately. I do truly think it’s best to wait at least a year so you learn how you use the space through the seasons. The flooring will need doing at some point (there’s a few cracked tiles) and when that is done I will look at any changes needed. But I don’t really know what I want yet truth be told and I probably made it sound worse than it is. It sort of suits the house and isn’t a million miles away from what I would chose anyway. Xx

    This was another great video! We also took a year to just live in our house - make notes on things we wanted to change entirely, things that needed simple updates and then we took a couple years for our outdoor living space planning. It was more expense planning and saving over a year that really helped us know what we would spend vs “dream spend” and that way we didn’t go into debt.

      Aww thank you! I think you don’t realise when you first move in which bits you really care about etc. For example when I moved in I pretty much lived in the kitchen (it has a conservatory area off it with a sofa etc), I could have the doors open so the dogs could come and go as they pleased and the garden is lovely and private so it was really nice. I even found myself working from the kitchen table. Then I was thinking I should blow the budget in that area as I spent so much time in it. However since December I’m in the living room or dining room all the time and only go in the kitchen to cook or to make a cuppa! Anyway this is a long winded way of saying I know it’s better to wait and not let enthusiasm get the best of me 😊

    This was thought provoking for me. Thank you! Just bought my first home 2 months ago & I’ve notice I am spending more are decorating etc. Your video made me realize to set priorities & put the breaks on it, sit in my house for four seasons before big decisions & investments (great tip!!) & use the time to plan. I think a lot of my expenditure toward home decor/ new furniture comes from “well what are people going to think” of me if they are sitting for example at my old kitchen table instead of a nice dining room table with matching pieces in my new dining room (a new space for me!) where in actuality My friends would understand & not judge as I take my time to save, plan & buy in stages. ❤️😊

      Hi Destiny, apologies for not replying sooner, I don't always get notifications. Congrats on buying your house, that's fantastic :) Yes I totally believe in taking your time if you can, If you have just one room that's somewhat how you want it (doesn't have to be perfect) then its a place to escape to when renovating. In my first flat I had just my bedroom done for months, and the TV in my lounge was perched on a low coffee table for a long time lol. It wasn't perfect but through waiting, I actually still have and use most of the furniture I bought then, 12 years ago because I waited for things I truly liked. And you are so right, true friends don't really care or judge, besides we all like different things anyway. Good luck with your renovations, I'm sure it will come together in the end :) x

    Hi Kirsty, loved this video as it gave me things to think about with my own budgeting.
    I agree that living with your home and garden for a full cycle of seasons is wise. I did this with my own garden here in Australia, and it was interesting to see how the sun moved around the property, which areas got a bit water-logged when it rained etc...It saved me a lot of expensive planting mistakes. Wouldn't it be wonderful if lots of lovely plants came up in the spring - fingers crossed!
    I also waited before renovating the house, and again this paid off as I could see how light rooms were in different seasons (it varied hugely) and also take note of any issues that might not be obvious at the time of purchase. My house is older - 1890s, and had been a rental for years. Some things did come up that weren't apparent when the building was inspected (plumbing and electrical issues) so it can be prudent to have a bit of money put by just in case. That said, in other old homes I've bought there were no issues at all.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад

      Ahh same era as mine, mine was built in 1895 :) Thankfully the house is in beautiful condition ( a few things here and there as expected with old houses) but there's always something that pops up. The downside of being a home owner I guess!

    Very helpful vlog. I moved end of Sept last year, to a slightly bigger house, so I am short on some furniture, but none of it is urgent. I can live like this no problem. Your no spend year vlog gave me the motivation to save hard this year and budget carefully every month. That way, next year I will have lived here a 12-18 months and know what I want and what works, and what’s a priority and what isn’t.
    I have a dishwasher in this house and I saw I am using it a lot more than I thought. It’s only me here, and I run it every 2 days. It’s a slimline Bosch one. You can adjust the bottom rack so the plate holder folds down, and put pots and pans in. Always gets everything clean, and no dishes in the sink. Makes the kitchen look tidy as it’s all out of sight. Thanks for sharing.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад

      Hi Sofia! I can relate, so much of the urgency is just what we place on ourselves. Better to take our time and get the right items than rush and then want something different later.
      Yes I had a dishwasher at my rental place and used it such a lot, I think that’s one of the reasons I notice it so much now. I’ll get one eventually for sure, likely this year and that will help kick the can down the road for any kitchen renovations. Xx

      Hi Esther, hope all is well in Finland. I understand your wanting to reduce hours. I think for me it is a realisation that life can be very short (I’ve lost a few uncles quite young over the last 5-10 years) and I hate the idea of never having had time to do the things that bring joy and instead filling life with stress. That said we are all different and all have different values so its not unexpected that not everyone will understand, I think that’s where trying to learn to not care what others think can help (something I’m forever working on!) Thanks for watching, I really hope you don’t feel alone too much xx

    I loved this video!! You can not even imagine the effect that hearing your thought process will have in my plans! I always make the list for the things I want or need but never expande on that like what can I use instead or if they can be second hand, of if I can sell the old model for the newer one. And I end up stuck because I mostly want to save so I end up not having a plan for the stuff on the list (like a desk, since I’ve been working from home)… Thank you so much

      Second hand is awesome! And even better some people give the most amazing stuff away for free! My brother has found some ridiculous things for free on places like Facebook marketplace in the past. I know people who get rid of all their furniture every time they redecorate - and they do it every other year. So there’s tons of stuff out there that’s barely has much use!
      Really pleased it helped you out, I’m never sure with these sorts of videos. X

    Definitely wait and see what comes up in the garden! An older garden will probably have lots of spring bulbs and early summer perennials like peonies to surprise you!🌷🌷 It's also good to see where the sunny and shady spots are over the year to really help with planning any changes. I buy second hand scruffy indoor dining tables very cheaply, give a coat of outdoor paint and they last a good few years in the garden.. So much cheaper than outdoor furniture. 😊😊

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад

      I definitely think there’s probably a few lovely plants that I don’t know are there (I only viewed twice before I got the keys ha ha), am happy with the decision to wait now. I have a small amount of outdoor furniture so can certainly manage for at least this coming summer - but yes I’ve often utilised items in other spaces so it’s a great shout. I have a wooden rocking chair that I treated and painted with outdoor furniture paint and it’s great, several years and still going strong 😊

Hold off a bit on that kitchen and garden! You are authentic, smart and confident and your ability to voice your ideas is wonderful. I am pretty good on paper, not so much verbally; thoroughly enjoy listening to you. You get me thinking and make me want to get better at taking care of my life properly, and in a way that benefits me in all the best ways. I laugh when you say "first world problems," as one of my friends says that as well. We know we are fortunate, I think, to be born where we were born and to live in this time, yet if we didn't strive to make ourselves and our lives better, what are we here for? Thank you for your good work here!

      I get some odd messages from people saying I didn’t no buy hard enough because people in some parts of the world don’t buy anything at all, even soap, and therefore I shouldn’t call my no buy year a no buy year. 🤯 Point being it’s not comparable, you you say you work from where you are and seek to improve, and our starting positions will always be different.

As soon as we signed and paid for it I felt sick 😫 I alwayget such enjoyment from getting something beautiful that is second hand. We had to wait months to be designed and made up (pre covid) and then our money situation changed and we couldn't get out of this couch purchase. It is a nice couch but it is not a spark joy couch and it is my only regretful purchase and nearly my only brand new purchase in my whole 2 properties we live separately (but together) in.

    Such a great video - I've recently found your channel and I'm really enjoying the content.
    As a fairly recent (and super stingy) gardener I'd like to let you know about some gardening things that I learnt as a first time home owner/new gardener. Realise some of them are pretty obvious but I wish someone had told me sooner!! One recommendation I'd give you is try to get as many mature plants from friends/family/neighbours/local Facebook group as you can. These plants have grown so much better in my garden than the ones I bought in garden centres and supermarkets and they're much hardier to cold and hot weather. Geraniums (not the pelargonium variety) are great for growing in rubbish soil and improving the soil quality in a matter of months. If you're doing raised beds I'd post on local groups to see if anyone has any soil/rocks they're looking to get rid of as this will save so much money and you don't need all the soil to be good quality. Lastly, my biggest learning was not starting a compost bin soon enough. If you're considering it and haven't already start a compost bin today!! Mine was pretty cheap but it's taken 1-2 years to get decent compost out of even with using the correct carbon to nitrogen ratios. Also as you were speaking about bulbs I noticed today that a lot of places have discounted bulbs for £1 that have gone over so I'd keep a look out!

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +1

      Hi there thanks for your comments, some really nice bits of advice here. I’m not a new gardener though, although I must have come across that way. My gran is a prolific gardener so I’ve been potting and sowing seeds and bulbs with her since I could walk 😊 Although I was in rented I became a huge container gardener, managed to grow tons of herbs which I really enjoy, even had carrots, onions, tomatoes, potatoes etc and tons of my favourite-lavender. I’ve utilised a lot of my pots in the new garden and actually changed my plans this year as I want to plan the large border this year, and the square pots have formed ‘raised beds’ that would have cost a lot to build, so have saved a lot there.
      I also am pretty funny in that I have a huge preference for blue/purple and white flowers - bees can see blue better than any other colour and I just love that. Loads also came up in the beds through spring so it was good to wait and not plough ahead.
      My dogs, one in particular, are plant tasters so I also plan around what it non toxic to them too. I’ve got some stuff to divide up before spring gets going so that will help.
      Most of the bulbs I have planned for pots this year are now in, (and ones I planted in the autumn are almost ready to flower 😊) but I’ll be on the lookout for certain things for next year once I plan the large border properly. I want it to be done so there’s always something in flower throughout different months so will take some planning as it is also quite shady in areas.
      Thanks for taking the time to write all this though, really nice of you.

    What a wonderful process video! Thank you for discussing the rationale behind saving or spending….I found that I needed to purchase higher end furniture for the garden because my lower cost furniture ( although lovely) just didn’t weather the outdoors well. I also replaced my sofa seat cushions with good quality foam (Amazon) and I was surprised how inexpensive it was to do. So yes, I find that sometimes I can refresh things and sometimes I need more expensive quality items….and I understand the need for a dishwasher! It was the first thing I purchased after moving in with my boyfriend….he is my husband now! Would we have gotten married without a dishwasher?! Hmmmmm……

      Thanks for the feedback Rebecca. This camera makes a very annoying shutter sound all the time and it’s impossible to get rid of it, so I have done some processing to try to reduce it, but perhaps that’s created too much of a difference between speaking. I have a better camera and external mic but it’s more complicated to set up and I’m still not sure on the natural lighting in this house yet, whereas this one alters the light automatically but the sound has issues! Anyway I’ve probably created an issue for the viewer in trying to correct something that bothers me 🤦‍♀️
      I don’t usually listen through headphones after editing but I will do so in the future to see what I can do to resolve this problem 😊

    Replacing the foam in your pillows would make your couch last for very little cost. One tip for your clothes, it’s really best to do a full assessment of your wardrobe first. Hi Dominique, I probably didn’t explain properly, I’m not worried about slimming it particularly (I know from your handle you probably cringe at that 😉) but more that I’d like to be able to wear more of what I have and let go of what I never will again. I will probably always have more clothes than I truly need as its something I love and get great enjoyment from. Many of the items I have are still beautiful but I spent more on ‘going out’ clothes in my twenties than anything else - and some were rather expensive. I already choose my planting based on what is good for pollinators (in particular lots of lavender, alliums, agapanthus, snapdragons, petunias, Rosemary, Callistemon and so on - purple or blue varieties are best) and have done for several years at my previous home, have bug and bee hotels and so on, have lots of bird feeders etc, have left the fallen leaves to act as a mulch, a pond is not possible due to certain elements of the plot and having dogs. Birds of all different sizes visit the trees I have, acers, maples, birch, and conifers as do squirrels. Large areas of the plot are concrete in sort of a courtyard style which could not be changed without huge expenditure to some kind of scrub or meadow like space.

I had set reasons why I want to overpay (at least for a certain period of time) which I’ve touched on in other videos. Again, it’s swings and roundabouts as many people are able to make much larger investments once they remove the monthly mortgage payment, and it really does come down to an individual’s comfort with risk. With interest rates likely to start rising under large rates of inflation, overpaying in the shorter term, to offset the cost of the increase once a mortgage fix ends in say 5 years time could prove prudent - some investments will fall as we enter recession.

      It’s pretty common on many mortgage products, in the U.K. at least. You often can only pay 10pc per year (some are 10pc of the original balance, some are 10pc of the balance at the start of each year so the amount you can overpay by declines each year) without incurring an early repayment charge, which can be anything from 1-9% of the original loan amount depending on the product! 🤯 It’s because the banks really make their money on the interest you pay on that loan, by overpaying you are reducing what they will make on that loan. They just want to make sure they are making their money on the transaction one way or another.
