    During this pandemic I’ve realized I don’t even wear makeup that much to be buying the latest makeup all the time. My addiction was honestly quite ridiculous...I’m still having a hard time letting go of the majority of my eyeshadow palettes because I adore them but other than that my collection is very small now. I don’t wear lipstick, just gloss on occasion, I only need one mascara, 2 foundations (one is a tinted moisturizer) and 3 of everything else. The beauty world here RUclips really created a monster. I’m glad to see some of them coming terms with how ridiculous it is to push every damn new thing on us. I get that it’s their job but at the same time it’s like why can’t you come up with different makeup videos instead of always new new new 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  3 года назад +3

      Having been (many moons ago) someone who made makeup videos, and in defence of some 'gurus', the videos that really get the views and subs consistently is the reviews of brand new stuff. So I guess it becomes addictive, in a weird way, the viewers are almost perpetuating the problem. I just got so sick of new new new, I am only a very small youtuber and was teeny back then, there's no way a 'normal' person can keep up, and yet it was always presented as the norm to have an entire room full of makeup. I just got sick of it, I remember coming home from work one day and saying - that's it, no more. The pandemic has been interesting in the aspect that I too when working from home and never seeing anyone often didn't wear makeup at all - I've been trying to use up a few bits that would have been done and gone for ages in normal times! I've sold a lot, given away a lot and am forcing myself to use up a fair bit with the desire to get down to an even smaller collection. I do have to agree, I think there could be a lot more creativity in videos with makeup (after all it is a fun subject), and I tend to only watch MUAs in that field now who are drama free and talk technique and not just new products all the time. x

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  4 года назад +2

      I'm sorry to hear doing a no buy didn't work for you in the way you hoped. I have found having goals around saving money has really helped me after the no buy ended, so now when I look at something (makeup, clothing, non essentials etc) I ask myself if I really want it or if I'm better saving towards a larger house deposit - but it could be a holiday, or a new piece of furniture, or just making sure I have funds for if I hate my job so much that I want to quit. We all have different things that help us, I did another similar video which goes more into the mindset I used to stop shopping, that might have a few things that might be useful? Hope you find a happy balance soon. xx

    I was just thinking the other day I miss your beauty videos now i see why. Well done you for this. Everything you say is so right. My make up collection used to consist of ONE of each item I needed and I'd replace it only when it was empty, that seems crazy to me now but I actually enjoyed my makeup more when I had less. Then I discovered RUclips 🙈 I keep attempting no buys and failing, the reason being is buying to cheer myself up.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  5 лет назад +4

      Hey honey! There is a few reasons why I stopped filming but yes doing a low buy means there’s nothing new to talk about. I’m exactly the same, I discovered RUclips and then goodness I bought so much stuff! I also started wearing lots more makeup on camera to try and look perfect, and bought lighting etc etc again to try and look like these girls who look so amazing on camera, but then started feeling like a fraud. In part I started makeup because I felt insecure about myself vs all the images on Instagram and so on, and then wanted to do RUclips to promote reality to other women like me, but the lure of the yt ‘game’ pulled me in! I’m hoping to continue with daylight filming and no lashes etc etc xx

    I have attempted no-buys / lo-buys several times over the last 5 years. My partner says that once I learn the difference between want and need I'll improve no end. I saved money specifically for our holiday to the States in June because I wanted to buy some brands I cannot get where I live (Malta). I spent about 100 bucks, but as I said, it was saved money so was budgeted.
    Currently all my eyeshadows and lippies are out, in full view on my dressing table and the only items I have hidden / put away are the spare or back up foundations and powders I recently bought. I agree with your comment about beauty rooms. They are envy inducing but really nobody can possibly use that amount of makeup in a lifetime.
    I am trying the Save For It way on lo-buying. I have savings pots set up that I credit weekly with a small amount. If I buy, the money has to come from the pot and not go on the card/come out of the regular account. Fingers crossed I can finally find a way to get my habit under control haha

    It sounds like there are quite a few of us in the same boat. I also had a meagre makeup collection until discovering youtube just over a year ago, as with others I partly buy to cheer myself up but also as most of my money seems to be spent on my kids (12 and 14) with school trips, uniform , extracurricular activities, it felt like I needed something for “me”! However, it’s definitely got a bit out of control and I’m also a sucker for deals...Boots No7 got me at the weekend! I keep a diary of what I’m spending at it’s ridiculous considering what else that money could be used for. So thank you for the reality check and I’m going to take stock and try really hard to reassess my spending over the next few months.

      Hi Michelle you are definitely not alone! I love RUclips so much but it has definitely been one of the catalysts for buying so much! Good idea to take stock of what you’ve bought too. I don’t think it’s wrong to buy something from time to time at all, and if it’s a good deal on something you want/will definitely use it’s no bad thing, but it’s so easy to justify anything we want in the moment! I’ve found this questioning myself before purchasing has leaked into other areas of my life too and I’m saving tons more than I even thought possible! Xx

    I don't wear make up often, but I get the principle. I knit, and I'm drawn to all the beautiful hand dyed skeins and impulse buy those -- even though the projects take forever to knit AND my wardrobe shows that I mostly wear neutrals. I end up with tubs of beautiful yarn I can't use up or with item I don't reach for because they're too bright. Decluttering and spending freezes have revealed things I couldn't see otherwise. And, just like you were saying, the thrill of buying more tools, pretty promising patterns, gorgeous yarns -- if I were having a day, I could online shop and get the fun new stuff in the mail. I'm not going to lie -- I miss the happy mail. But I need nothing.

    I used to be a makeup junkie, but since the pandemic I've bought nearly nothing for my cosmetic collection and have switched to web filters instead. I still buy eyelashes and shadows, but foundation is no longer necessary. I'm pretty sure this is better for my skin. I still wear makeup when I go out and it feels more like a special occasion.

      Glad to hear you have found something that works for you. I've been enjoying having days without makeup too and looking after my diet and skin so that I feel more confident without it. I think being a makeup junkie as you put it, was somewhat glamorised a few years ago, especially with all the beauty room tours and hauls and so on. I fell down the rabbit hole and it cost so much money. I just have a much simpler routine now, almost back to what it was before I ever found the YT beauty community!

    Welcome back.. great to see your doing videos again.. I am trying to spend less on makeup.. I will ask for makeup for birthday ideas and Christmas ideas.. do you rotate your opened stuff ?? So your enjoying diff products you forget about and have diff monthly favourites? Anyway great video 🙂💕

      Hi honey yes I’m both proactively using things up that I’m maybe not in love with and also using items I’d maybe forgotten about or not used for a while. I don’t necessarily do ‘panning’ and use one item for a solid month but do try to use things. I find this also helps me not want to buy something new as I’m always rediscovering things I have. It’s also useful to help me learn what brands I like, what formulas I like too. That again helps me make less mistakes when I do buy xx

    Hi sweetie
    I have always bought just what I need.
    One eye shadow , 1 mascara. 1 eyeliner 1 blush
    1 thing at a time.
    I don’t want to have makeup for a long time .
    I use what I have when it’s finished I buy the new one that I need 😘

      Yes of course this is a more sensible way to do things, but many many people have fallen down the rabbit hole of the beauty community on here and way overspent. I wasn’t even bad in comparison to some, many people I spoke with had gotten into debt buying so much. Obviously this video isn’t going to add value to someone who shops as you do.

      I cant believe I ever bought so much - I fell down the rabbit hole and took way too long to climb out! I've given away tons, sold a load, focussed on purposely using things up and I still have so much it seems ridiculous - so glad I stopped buying, it just wasn't worth it. Subculture is lovely, I haven't had much chance to play with it recently as most days are makeup free for me with wfh during the pandemic. x

      @@KirstyKirby Thanks for the reply. My focus is now on enjoying what I have. I have no chance of ever running out of eye shadow and powder face products, but I'm enjoying the variety and definitely feel I have more than enough to rotate through and enjoy. Picking up a product I haven't used in a while does provide a similar feel of trying it new if it's been a few months, and I do enjoy that.

    Try the Esum Pro mixing medium. I have hooded eyes and the Esum solidifies shimmers much better than like a glitter glue so no transfer x ☺️

      Kisha Solomatina not 100% sure as filmed this ages ago but foundation is highly likely to be Estée Lauder doublewear in fresco, blush will either be Mac Mocha or the Zoeva Coral Blush Palette. Lipstick looks like Mac’s Mehr. Sorry I couldn’t be more certain x

    I’m not going to buy a palette again unless it only has a couple of colors. There is so much I don’t use in a palette and it is a waste.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +2

      I understand that completely Denise. I tend to gravitate to just certain colours in palettes. I’ve often thought I would have been better purchasing singles like I used to and creating my own little palettes.

    One foundation I use now is IT CC Cream swear by it. I also am trying the using of more than one palette to create the look. That seems to curb my my addition lol 🤣.

    The truth no beauty guru tells us is that in fact all the blushes and all the bronzers in the world ultimately look the same on our face. Eyeshadows are the most unique. they are noticeably different on, as well as different shades of lipstick.
    It is a bit of a waste to have more than three kinds of blushes or bronzers or foundations because ultimately they all look the same.
    My favorite bronzer by Mac “give me sun” , is used daily and it’s still almost brand new looking after 3 years of use… it’s hard to watch actually because it makes me realize how long I have to use it to finish it up! One bronzer is all I really need (or wear) and it was 30$! I didn’t actually need the ten other bronzers I ended up accumulating over the years because I hadn’t even made a dent on my first bronzer (“give me sun”)
    It’s infuriating to think how much money I have spent Trying to keep up with the trends or to get the latest Eye candy product for my collection !
    I have made tons of donations, gifts and sold unopened make up to family and friends and I still have enough to last me a lifetime (if make up didn’t expire) !
    We all need to remind ourselves that Make Up does expire and it takes so much space, mentally. energy that could be used for something else. Think of how little we actually need to look decent , beautiful or even gorgeous! The technique is so much more important than the amount of products we use also the quality of the product is more important than the quantity. I think Make Up purchases offer a defense mechanism. A cover-up for an addiction, at least that’s what it was for me. The thrill of the new and how much stuff I had made me feel excited, important and like I belong.
    It was a façade covering up anxiety, self doubt and insecurities. I have done work on myself to be able to see all that it actually is. Logically we know not to spend all our money on things that expire but it serves a different purpose to do so, despite our knowledge! How many of you feel me right now? Does anyone relate to this? Using purchasing of make up as a way to feel important or accepted or excited?
    If we feed those needs some other way, our huge need for immense amounts of unnecessary stuff will subside eventually, and logic will set it!

      Thanks so much for watching and got sharing your thoughts Naf. This is quite an old video and I’ve covered some of the things you mention here in other videos, but it always great to bring it to the front of peoples minds. I also have content planned around self esteem and makeup purchases for the future.
