  • After leaving the fast fashion industry Lucia set herself a new challenge - could she spend an entire year without buying things? Sharing the ups and downs of her year, Lucia's honest and entertaining story is an inspiration for all of us to try living our lives with just a little less junk. Lucía González Schuett was born in Barcelona but moved to a tiny rural community in southern Spain while she was still a child. Her father had made an abrupt career change to follow the family’s farming tradition. Suddenly they were harvesting cork and managing cattle on horseback. Being so close to nature helped Lucía develop the balanced and healthy lifestyle she treasures today. She began playing the flute at age nine and has been part of several bands and chamber music groups. She also plays volleyball and is an avid skier.
Lucía graduated in Foreign Languages in Madrid. After working in different areas related to communication, she radically altered her career path joining a Spanish multinational fast-fashion company in Germany. She was living a happy life, indeed, one in which her needs had always been met. Maybe that was precisely why the initial question arose: what did she really need? When is enough... enough? This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The speaker nailed it. She has learned to be resourceful with not only her money but also with her time and words. I came here for the motivation to do my own No Buy Challenge.

I did 2023 with buying zero clothes, shoes, or other ‘stuff’ and gave tons to charity and sold some things. A cluttered home is a cluttered mind.
If people invested money that they spend on things they did not really need, they would have the chance to get wealthy.
    Great talk, thank you ❤

Agreed. Always trying to upgrade to bigger homes, new cars and stuff you won't care about after you get it doesn't increase your happiness. It does create more clutter in all ways.

I really like her point about borrowing/lending. If we don't have it, someone we know probably does and would be happy to loan it out. Helping each other out like this more often would help all of our wallets and this planet we all share immensely!

This idea seems obvious but is totally wonderful. I practiced with stopping buying clothes in case I really need them for a formal occasion and turned to secondhand clothes or hand-me-down items of clothing from my relatives or neighbors nearby and somehow I feel that my fashion is getting better than the time I purchased new clothes. The experience has been exciting and changed my life in an unexpecting way. Thank you for your sharing!

I'm not buying any clothing in 2021 save a few preselected items (underthings, workout shoes). I have more than enough clothes for all seasons and occasions!

I was trying to get rid of stuff my my mum wants me to show her everything I'm decluttering. If it's something she thinks is essential for me to keep, she'll say "you're just trying to find stuff to get rid of, because this is perfectly good." But for me, I never use it and I won't so what's the point in keeping it?

My parents think that every single drawer should be a junk drawer and that it’s the same for everybody in every single house. Everytime I talk with them about doing something they think I want to throw all of their things away so they get mad. I don’t really know what to do at this point because everytime we try to clear up a drawer, I find the stuff in it piled up in another drawer. This means my parents need multiples of everything because they obviously struggle to find their pair of scissors or their measuring tape ...

Decluttering and organizing is a real mental process. Not everyone is ready to let go of their items or if they want to be sustainable they will try to consume all the products until they have to throw it out.
Try to ask them what they want their house to look like. Clean and neat? Or having to spend minutes of finding an item and never finding it quickly? Some people hold on to items because of certain memories, if you want to keep the memory, but not the clutter... take a picture of it. Marie Kondo would say keep it, because it brings you joy. But having a minimalist thoughtproces: Does it have value for you to have 5 pairs of kitchen scissors? Or keep 150 clothing hangers, while you only can store 30 shirts in your hanging closet?
Tell them you don't mean to get of the item (just for the sake of decluttering), but that you want others to enjoy the items they have used. Sell, donate, repair and recycle.

my best advice for situations like this is to make it their idea. A lot of people try to help people declutter by trying to get rid of what they think is junk as opposed to what the person they're helping is willing to get rid of. The best way I've been helped with decluttering is not being told what to do but being asked open ended questions about stuff until I figure out what to do. "Where do you want to put this?" "Where would you look for this?" "What do you want this drawer to be used for?"

@@anastasiabeaverhaus9 Neccessities are exempt from this rule, as long as you don't collect them.
If you run out of deodorant and you have no backup, you can of course buy a new one. Or even make your own.
If you have 5 extra ones in your bathroom though, that's a different story.

    • @anastasiabeaverhaus9
      @anastasiabeaverhaus9 4 года назад +2

@@lelexoxo303 that isn't a given. Many of the no buy videos and blogs I have seen/read account for these things. As a matter of fact, I recently saw one where the woman specifically said she didn't buy shampoo for the whole year because she had several bottles in her bathroom and knew she needed to use it before spending more money. Many even specifically budget these things in because it is exactly those types of purchases where people will slip into old habits if they aren't explicit and specific when it comes to spending goals and changing habits.
