Speaking about the meaning of the lyrics, John Oates has stated that while many listeners may assume the lyrics are about a relationship, in reality, the song, "is about the music business. That song is really about not being pushed around by big labels, managers, and agents and being told what to do, and being true to yourself creatively." This was done intentionally, he explained, to universalize the topic

Tyler Ballz Why you mad, guy? The 80s in general were comical, from the neon jumpsuits to the hairstyles, etc. Massive amounts of cocaine mixed with waning artistic sensibilities makes for comedy gold, which is exemplified perfectly by the 80s, of which H&O were a staple of the culture. I didn’t say anything about their musical abilities, only that by today’s standards it’s pretty damn cheesy. “No can do...” Bahahaha That’s amazingly corny and lame, and that’s the reality whether your perception aligns with it or not. I ain’t mad; why you mad?
Michael Hurwitz lol why am I mad? Bro let me explain this to you as thorough as possible I’m definitely not mad and I didn’t look at it in that perspective when you explain the color jumpsuits and all that shit I guess I can agree with you I was born in 1991 though so I don’t really know much about the 80s but one thing I know is hall and oates Hey still banging at barbecues all across America and cookouts
Tyler Ballz Ha! All good. I was born in ‘81-the early 90s held some of that neon swag. Hey, I love H&O, but I also recognize that aside from the fantastic musicianship, the cheese is thick for sure at times. Peace
Blue-eyed soul! These were two of the baddest soulful/r&b singers in the 80's! All of their songs were great and here it's 2018 and they sound as good as they did in the 80's. 80's music was the absolute best ever, that was an era where everything was just cool and life felt great. I'm an 80's lady, always will be, I'll be 45 this year in December. These guys can sing to me anytime, and I always had a crush on Daryl Hall. =)

False. According to Daryl, who wrote it, this is his "Anti-Road" song, written when they were out touring literally non-stop from 1980 through 1985. No Can Do was their anti-establishment song.

hell yes my favorite hall and oates song, man daryl hall what a voice he sounds like a black guy what a soul voice, guys dance with your lady to this one and enjoy the beat.80's at the best.
Hall and Oates are known as Blue Eyed Soul. They sent a demo to my Philly radio station in the the early 70's, and the host thought they were black, too. The shock they had when when two white guys walked into the studio!
I'd be honored if some late 70s/early 80s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES by Michael McDonald, SEPTEMBER by Earth Wind & Fire, and YOU'RE THE ONLY WOMAN by Ambrosia on my YT channel in tribute to the masters of the era. Well I’ll be damned! Read this and had to listen to the song again! Now I understand so many things about Hall and Oats and their music career!
I heard Maneater is about NYC and I agree so cool
hell yes my favorite hall and oates song, man daryl hall what a voice he sounds like a black guy what a soul voice, guys dance with your lady to this one and enjoy the beat.80's at the best.
Hall and Oates are known as Blue Eyed Soul. They sent a demo to my Philly radio station in the the early 70's, and the host thought they were black, too. The shock they had when when two white guys walked into the studio!
Allyson Wargo
no way that sounds cool, ha ha i love the story thank you
Allyson Wargo That is funny!
That is so true...There is nothing like this today. Music that can reach your soul and a million memories come back to you. ♡

So whimsical yet soulful. Released nearly 45 years ago. Really tells you something about the longevity of good music. A wonderful contribution.
This song was a 80s party banger.

If you're human...This song circulates in your soul
I'd be honored if some late 70s/early 80s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES by Michael McDonald, SEPTEMBER by Earth Wind & Fire, and YOU'RE THE ONLY WOMAN by Ambrosia on my YT channel in tribute to the masters of the era. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.
I'm an Elephant and it swirls in my soul too

Love This Song. 2025 Has Already Started Off Tough For Our Small Family. 3 Deaths, Losing My Home Due To Poor Building Management And My Youngest Step Son Having Mental Health Issues. It's Alot And This Song Really Helps Me Deal With It All.
I hope things will get much better for your family...❤

I am not a native speaker, but this is one of these lifetetime songs that I loved, before I even knew the lyrics. And - low and behold: the lyrics represent the story of my lifetime.
Hall and Oates are timeless
I love how a music track can transport you back in time in a second 😍
September 2024 and still enjoying this song 😊
👋
December.
The fusion of rock and roll and R&B. “Blue-eyed soul” --- and no one did it better.
Micheal McDonald has entered the chat.
@@jj____2729 Much respect to Michael McDonald. From the Doobie Bros, going solo, to collaborations with Patti Labelle and James Ingram, he's earned a place in the Hall of Fame.
Don't forget Bowie. He did a phenomenal job blending soul and funk with different styles of rock.
Steely Dan.
