I just did cabinets, semi gloss emerald urethane. After curing for 2 days it was smooth and hard. Definitely not like shark skin. Sounds like they fixed the problem. 10/10 for cabinets. Went with snowbound white
I was just about to buy sw emerald satin for my cabinet remodel. So glad I saw this video! I want a paint that feels smooth. Do any of your other videos address this with suggestions?
Very nice review and very thorough in your testing approach, especially that you didn't rush it and let it properly cure. On my last kitchen project I used BM Advanced and was very very happy with that paint. However, it's impossible to get anymore, same with Emerald. I had a bathroom vanity to do and took a chance on Home Depot's Behr Urethane Alkyd in Satin. Mixed feelings about it. I would be very curious to see how it fairs in your testing.
DIY homeowner did a complete renovation used emerald on 13 interior doors using a Fuji HVLP sprayer. 5 years later all the doors still look as they have been freshly painted. Learning curve as with all products but great results.
Did u do any “test” doors or trim using Duration? Lots of recent reviews are saying duration is really good also on trim/ INT door I’m debating Duration or Urethane
I would have to disagree with with it leaving a “rough” surface. I’ve used this trim paint on many jobs and I thought the same thing as first but turned out it was just dust in the air settling. Since this product has a longer drying time than many other paints I believe that when removing masking and/or opening and closing doors allowed that dirt and debris to settle and dry with the paint. I lightly sanded the surface with 320 grit, cleaned and recoated paint then allowed about an hour for the surface to dry before removing masking and it was very smooth almost like a cured epoxy. I could be wrong but this is my opinion on the paint.
Question about the feel ‘bite’ you described to the finish- how did you apply? The most I felt that way about this paint was when I sprayed it… I ended up realizing I used too small an orifice size on the spray tip… I thought maybe that was the cause, I think when it’s brushed it’s not too bad of a feel for semi gloss at least
DIY Homeowner, Just repainted (oak cabinets, HVLP sprayer) with this in the semi gloss and while it looks amazing we have the same problem with the smoothness.
There is a big difference between brushing and spraying cabinets I use a titan capspray 105 hvlp and with the emerald urethane semigloss they come out really really smooth
Im building my own kitchen cabinets shaker style. Going to paint the face frames and doors. Poplar frames and MDF panels. Should I use this paint or the BM Command. I will be spraying them using the Graco truecoat gun.
Don, how did this project turn out? What paint did you end up using? I am about to embark on the same journey and paint finish is the only thing I’m worried about.
Painted kitchen island 2 yrs ago with this. I would not recommend. Degreased, sanded, primed, brushed and rolled 2 top coats sanding in between. Started to chip after 1 year....I'm not a pro though. Just had kitchen cabinets repainted by a pro this time. Used Renner 2k...hopefully optimistic.
Do you use shellac-based primer on cabinets because of shellac's stain blocking attributes? Also when something says "stain blocker" does that mean keeping stains that are under the primer coat from bleeding through as well as keeping things above or on the stain blocking coat from being able to permanently stain the paint? .... in simple terms is it only blocking stains under the coat or is it blocking under and above?
Going to brush/roll BM Advance on my kitchen cabinets, but was considering brush/roll SW Emerald on interior MDF doors & MDF trim due to faster dry & cure time. Your thoughts? Go with BM Advance all the way?
Hi Ed, Command is equally as durable as Advance and costs less. It also dries in about 15-30 minutes. It self levels about the same too. If you roll make sure you back brush to knock off the roller nap. I invite you to subscribe so you can here more product reviews and tips and tricks. Thanks!
@@klappenbergersonpaintingha2933 does one of them brush/roll easier than the others (meaning is if easier to avoid brush marks)? Thanks for a great video.
I just did a whole building with 5 apartments. I used this paint (semi gloss) on all of the trim, doors sills and bathroom ceilings. I thought it could have had a touch more slide when feeling it but, didn't dwell on the topic I just sprayed some cabinets black in the satin. Primed with extreme block oil and sprayed with one heavy pass black onto the white primer. Im letting the doors cure a bit before they go back on but here's a walkthrough after I was done spraying if you want a chuckle. Mild potty mouth here and there but, it did not have one curtain call... also Im not a video guy so no nagging on the quality.. Ill follow up when the doirs are back on. This stuff feels as close to a factory finish as you can get in the field imo.... ruclips.net/video/AIikOh633_I/видео.html
115.00/gal in Illinois in July 2023 - and i think it is JUNK! I sprayed with HVLP and it will never harden. After 4 weeks if you sit something on it it will stick to the paint.

bless this man for leaving that nasty grease and mess on his cabinet surface for weeks and months!
are you a DIY or pro?
Thx for your review. Very useful info covered. ❤

Which base did you use for your testing?
What is the best paint for cabinets
Why not oil prime instead of the shellac? Nice vid thanks
Watched just now, and I am wondering what you would recommend for kitchen cabinets?
What kind of paint would you recommend for a front entry door this is what I was thinking was the Sherwin Emerald.
How can get a emerald flat paint to a emerald satin paint
Anyone have first hand experience…..
I’m debating between the urethane or Duration for interior closet doors/ trim
- So does the Emerald Urethane still dry with that rough texture or has it been reformulated since your review?
in your opinion how much would 1 gallon of this paint cover?

Yes you are correct. All premium grade paints look amazing when they are sprayed.
And also if you use mini roller like me @@klappenbergersonpaintingha2933

Do I have to sand between Emerald urethane coats and can I recoat the next day?
Yes and yes

I've never had this problem. Did you sand prior and in between coats?
yes
What's catsup?
Can I top coat this paint with water based poly, for a high use area
Yes you can!
why can i see all of the brush strokes on the trim?
Brushing dosen't have the same self leveling that spraying has.

I use Shellac because it fuses with lacquer finishes that are on the surface of kitchen cabinets. Stain sealer blocks old stains from penetrating.

The trade off is a slightly smoother finish to the touch with Advance or quicker recoating with Emerald. That's the only significant difference.
@@Avital4414 Very very similar. Slight edge to Advance but nobody will see the difference.
@@klappenbergersonpaintingha2933 thanks for another terrific video, and for a very very helpful reply.
uhhh if you spray emerald it is very smooth
Yes, but there should not be a night and day difference between brushing and spraying. I also believe SW is getting the issue resolved.
