Just finished painting all my kitchen cabinets that came with a 42+ year old house. Proper degreasing/sanding/priming was/is the key. The finished cabinets look outstanding as if they were just installed. Friends can not believe the results from a DIY who just turned 77 years old. Cabinets are looking outstanding!!!!
I see a couple negative comments regarding this paint so I’d like to chime in. I used the Advance satin paint tinted a dark gray (color matched to ikea bodbyn gray cabinets). It’s on my crown, baseboards, and doors. This is the best paint I have ever used. You barely see paint brush strokes and it is extremely durable. My dogs scratch the doors and the paint has held up with only very minor surface scratches. You really can’t even see the scratches unless I pointed them out. Last time I paid $75 for a gallon and it’s worth every cent.
I have used Advance for years. Satin dries much more quickly than the high gloss. Reapplication is supposed to be 16 hours, but in the right conditions I have recovered in 8 with no issue for shelving. Best paint for cabinets IMHO.
Thanks for the video ,I was locking for a good review on this paint, I always used impervo satin from benjamin moore for all wood work and cabinets with penetrol and mineral spirit I love oil base with the right brushes and sponge roller it leaves nice finish. I stick to what it works for me but with this review now I'll give it a try because I think impervo will be discontinued soon, and I watch the other video comparing other paints ,cool thanks again.
You can't NEVER compare!! Even the Satin Impervo ( water based ) was far better than this paint. I have tried this Advanced Paint and it doesn't cover especially over dark colors ( if you are trying to do a lighter color ,) it runs, the cure time, is literally weeks before it can be really hard and hard to scratch. I won't ever use it again. If you are, I would do 3 coats of tinted primer and 2 coats of this shitty paint.
I was going two use it on kitchen cabinets but changed my mind due to 16 hour re coat time and 24 if you want to sand between coats with 300 sand paper. Also many are saying it yellows within a few months. I got spooked .
I am so thankful to have come across your videos! I'm a new homeowner looking to paint my cabinets and have never painted cabinets before. How long does the primer need to dry and will it need more than one coat? Same for the paint color coat - how long before they can be hung back up and will more than one coat be necessary? Thank you!
Shellac primers dry in 30 minutes, other primers maybe 2-4 hours. Wait 24 hours before hanging the cabinets and then give the 4 days to dry before you try wiping them off. Advance has the longest cure time, Command and Breakthrough have the fastest cure time.
I hate brushing workability with this paint, but I love the cured finish for cabinets. Very hard and tough for high traffic, but I won’t use it for trim, as it slows me down.
Hi! You mentioned that the color comparison toward the end of the video is Benjamin Moore without tint...did you use all paints without tint in that other video where you compared a bunch of different paints?? Supply chain issues...can't find advance in base 1 for a white tint anywhere without 50 miles and I really want to use this paint. So I'm wondering if using it without tint will suffice.
Ignoring the cost difference, if you were choosing between Benjamin Moore Advance and Sherwin Williams Emerald for kitchen cabinets, which would you choose? I thought I had my mind made up after your Emerald review, but now I'm second-guessing. I will be using an airless paint sprayer on the doors and brushing the cabinet faces and sides. Thanks for the great videos!
Advance is more durable. I will be having a new video that compares 8 different cabinet-grade paints. That have had Crisco and Olive spread over it for weeks to see which one peels first. I am 12 weeks into the test and Emerald was the first to peel.
I noticed the darker colors such as the Reds and Blacks take a super long time to cure . I've even heard of up to 30 or more days but I still use the advanced
Had my cabinets sprayed with Advance Chantilly Lace one year ago, hands down the best paint i have ever seen in a paint for cabinets so far. Clean up is ridiculously easy, finish is rock hard and has the smoothest finish I’ve seen. What white did you use, my Chantilly lace is next to the trim that was painted with sherwin williams extra white and Advance is brighter white.
Love the finish. Dries to slow for me for cabinet painting. Doesn't cover very well with a brush. Big draw back for me is it ambers even in the can. If you paint expect it o have to color match if you need touch ups
The thing I care about is avoiding/minimizing brush marks, since I use a brush and mini-roller. Comparing C-2 with Advance, Is one of these two products easier in that respect than the other? Would you use C-2 on trim? Thanks for the great video!
They are all really good paints. If I was using straight white paint I would choose Advance for coverage. Advance, C2, Emerald are all very easy to work with and self-level nicely. In my opinion, there is not a significant difference.
I was seriously considering using Benjamin Moore advance white paint to paint my kitchen cabinets however I am looking for an ultra white paint. Is there another paint that you can recommend that has most if not all the same features as Benjamin Moore’s advance but is ultra white? C2. would not be my choice as it is not nearly as durable as BM Advance. Does the BM Emerald line include ultra white?
Hi all. I just painted my kitchen cabinets with BM Advance, but noticed microscopic air bubbles on the last coat. Would appreciate for any advice? Thank you
Wondering if you used a oil based/waxed base type cleaning solution on the cabinets before painting. I used a water based solution to clean mine and I made sure the primer was water soluble as well. The paint store claimed that any oil/wax residue will cause a micro beading effect. Some type of chemical compound must have still been within your wood cabinets.
Hey, thank you for this video, this is fantastic! Question I have for using this paint for painting cabinets. How do I know that I have to add a paint conditioner? Also, can I spray Ben Moore advance paint using Graco X5? Thank you!
If you are spraying Advance through a Graco X5, adding Conditioner will have a minimal results and slow the dry time. If you are going to brush, than paint conditioner would be worth using. Never just roll. The nap marks look like ametuar hour.
@@klappenbergersonpaintingha2933 thanks for the feedback as well, was contemplating the same project with a titan that I was eyeing. I'll do some touch ups on another smaller cabinet with a brush and the BM x tender @20% then will be able to do the larger project at our new house.
@@terrencesauve Sounds great. I be putting out some additional testing results about the durability of Advance in a couple weeks. If you have not subscribed you might want to. I found the results a bit surpizing.
Hi really enjoyed your video. I'm painting my dark stain kitchen cabinets with the BM Advance. What primer would you suggest I use to get the best results? Thank you
@@klappenbergersonpaintingha2933 Thank you for your quick response. Would you recommend Valspar stainblocking primer-sealer extreme adhesion? This is what I have. Absolutely. For best adhesion use a shellac primer. Here is the order: Clean with degreaser, sand with 220, wipe so 100% dust free, prime, sand, apply two finish coats
@@klappenbergersonpaintingha2933 i loved the way it works. I tried to topcoat on the same day once, and I will never use again because of it. But does self level nicely.
Awesome video and info. I was told to buy this to spray for cabinets. What's killing me is the runoff from the paint on cabinets and 16 hours to recoat. I have already applied 2 coats and continue to have runoff even when spraying at a low setting. So, what brush would you recommend since the spray is not going to work and would you rather use a lacquer?
Having the pressure to low might be the problem. Turn the pressure up to 3/4 the max and use a 311 - 315 fine finish tip. Practice spraying on card board until you get the speed of your hand and the paint volume balanced out. If you choose to brush, get a 2.5 inch Wooster and add a latex conditioner to the paint.
NOT good paint I don't understand why people say BM Advance paint is great. I have been painting for years and it is the WORST paint I have ever used. It is nothing it says it is. It has no working time, does not lay off well, and does not level at all. Bought the prime and brush they recommend. I just did my new trim and all I see is brush marks. I returned the first gallon and tried a second, same poor results. I recommend avoiding this paint at all costs.
THIS PAINT SUCKS!! It is VERY THIN!! TAKES FOREVER TO DRY, YOU GET RUNS ALL THE TIME. COVERAGE FROM DARK TO WHITE, LIKE 4 COATS OVER 2 COATS OF A WHITE PRIMER. I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT.!!

I bought this for painting furniture. It's expensive, but more affordable than the foufy furniture paints that cost $30 for a 16 oz container
Thanks so much. I’m sold. I don’t want white white so I think it will be perfect for me
Your welcome. Just make sure you allow 16 hours between coats. Otherwise, the paint can take months to cure.

Hi, great video! Question, what are you using to condition Advance?
Benjamin Moore Chantilly lace is the whitest of whites no black or grey undertones, can be mixed to advance or scuff x.
As a distributor of Ben Moore and PPG, which version/item number of Breakthrough did you test. The 200 VOC is harder than the 50 VOC product.
Thanks so much for your expertise. So would you recommend the Ben Moore Advance over the Command for kitchen cabs?

Sherwin-Williams emerald urethane.. that paint is amazing
What does the word C2 mean? Is this already in the BM Advance paint??????
C2 is actually a brand of paint. It the full name.
What is the best primer to use under the advance gloss or semi for trim?
So I do not need to apply Primer
Can I use Advance paint for a dining table top?
Yes but do a light sanding or use a good adhesion primer. It take a good two weeks to cure so be careful before that time.
Is this as good as Waterborne Satin Impervo
Good question. I have not tested Waterborne Satin Impervo. Probably very similar. I've never used a waterborne paint that I wasn't impressed by.
Can it be used over oil based paint?
You'll want to prime it first with a shellac primer
So I do not need to start or apply Primer?
Absolutely. For best adhesion use a shellac primer.
