Thanks very much. Very useful information. Regal eggshell has been our favorite paint over the years.
It was one of my favorites eggshell paints for a long time until the reformulation a little over a year ago. I’m hoping they adjust it so it’s closer to the old formula.
I do interior paint work on the side occasionally. Benjamin Moore makes two different eggshell sheens in the Ultra Spec 500 line: Low sheen eggshell and eggshell. The low sheen eggshell looks fantastic.

Regal Select eggshell is my go to. My store switched formulations mid-job, but I didn't notice other than the color of the can. Waiting for the cut-ins to dry is a great tip.
The Regal Eggshell doesn’t seem to be quite as finicky as the Aura Eggshell but it’s definitely a little trickier to work with than the older formulation. We only noticed it with certain conditions and in certain areas. We shall see if they adjust the formula at all moving forward.
@@SuperVassarBrothers Good to know. The store guys couldn't tell me what was different, just that the formulation changed. Luckily the color recipe was still spot on and a perfect match.

As you discussed the candle wax effect on the select eggshell, With most paints - either roll with wet cut or dry, but not half dry
A lot of crews have been having issues with the new formulation. It’s the only paint I’ve used (apart from AURA) that has this issue.

I would use Emerald Urethane trim enamel from Sherwin Williams or Advance from Benjamin Moore
Scuff x on trim is amazing, just go down one sheen from what you are looking for. I also agree on the new regal formula it has problems. I'm searching for a new paint to use now....
I’ve heard good things about Scuff X on trim. I’m also interested in the newer Command product in Satin.
I talked with my buddy earlier today and he said that when his crew uses Regal they go with the matte finish. It seems to be shinier than the old formulation, but doesn’t have the same sagging issues as the eggshell. I’ve also heard Scuff X matte is solid for walls.
@@SuperVassarBrothers not sure if they have the command line here in Canada, I'll look into it. I'm super happy with scuff x on trim. In my area Ultimatte Regal was the most popular choice for wall finish. But the new Regal is a jump up on the sheen chart. So ultimatte is now an eggshell finish...

I'm a new homeowner and just tried out Aura and had a really mixed experience. Luckily I read ahead of time that it's easier to cut in and let dry before rolling with aura so the walls were a breeze for me. Honestly probably better for a noob like me so I didn't have to try to keep up. I made the mistake of trying to paint the doors in a higher sheen aura as well, and that was a nightmare. I resanded the door 3 times but could never paint fast enough to get to the roller before the brushed detail work was tacky, even with an extender.
I've done some furniture with Advance and loved how that turned out. Was going to redo the doors with that, but maybe I'll check out the Command line mentioned a few times in the comments here.
I’ve heard good things about Command Satin. It’s similar to Emerald Urethane which is our current go-to trim paint.
@@SuperVassarBrothers command is a great product. but i find it only looks good sprayed especially in a white. best to stick with scuff x if brushing
We just had our entire home professionally painted with Aura and they let cut-ins dry before rolling. I was surprised since I was always taught to never let cut-ins dry. The paint job looks great. We went with a matte finish.
Great overview. There is also a few more including barebones ceiling paints like CHB ( forgot the name), Super hide ceiling paint, and Kitchen and Bath. I personally just use kitchen and bath in our small bathroom. It turned out excellent with the orange color we picked you are still going to need two coats for an even color distribution but anyway it's still a great line in my opinion Benjamin Moore has a richness to color.
Also haven't had a chance to try the New Aura but the old worked just fine. I don't know if it's a real issue with the paint itself or the perceived quality of the pain compared to regal. Perhaps if you have deep, rich colors like blue, purple and red and terracotta Red etc than the Regal line might be worth your dollar. It's too bad you had a bad experience with it. And it's too bad that it's marketed as their high-end paint and you had the worst experience.
I still love Benjamin Moore stuff.
I am a fan of a lot of Benny Moore stuff. The issue we had with Aura is quite common amongst crews that use it. In its current formulation it’s not worth the money or the effort.
CHB = Chicago Home Builders. Unfortunately, we can't get that in this market. I've had good luck doing a few ceiling restorations/repairs/touch ups with Bullseye 1-2-3 primer. That may sound crazy, but it matches so well in the instances I've used it. It's saved me from full ceiling repaints. Hours and hours saved.
@@SuperVassarBrothers The reason Aura is difficult to use is because of increasingly higher environmental standards set by USA and Canada. Thats why BM recommends their extender for Aura. It's basically adding back in the toxins that made older paints great to work with. It's a way to get around government regulations.
Not sure what nap roller you were using for the waterborne ceiling paint, but I've used it for years and have had no problems w/ splattering. In fact, I find just the opposite. I can almost roll it w/out any drops. I use the top line Wooster 3/8 nap roller
I’ll check that roller out the next time I have to use it. We were using pro-doo-z 1/2 inch
I have to paint the inside of home, and I want Chantilly Lace white on ceiling and Coventry Gray on walls.
If I go with with Ultra Spec 500 for Chantilly Lace flat on ceiling and Regal Matte for walls, would that be ok?

You should do ok with that. Regal Matte doesn’t seem to have the sagging issue that Regal eggshell has.
I would be interested in seeing a review of Benjamin Moore's Command paint for trim and door applications.
It’s coming. We’ve used it a bit recently but I haven’t had enough experience with it to have an informed opinion yet.
Do you have a strong preference between Regal and Ultra Spec for exterior? I’m considering Regal (low luster/soft gloss) or Ultra Spec (satin) in Chantilly Lace for my exterior brick. The brick is currently painted a dark khaki color, so I anticipate two coats of primer.
I’m a big fan of Regal MoorGuard Low Lustre for big exterior surfaces. We use Regal Moorglo Softgloss for exterior trim and doors.
I asked one of the guys at my local Ben Moore store about Scuff X and he really likes it. He said he painted his garage interior with it, and a year later it still looks brand new.
It’s a solid product. I’m looking forward to using some more in the future 🤙

Used the Advance for the kitchen repainting, after two coats of their top level primer- allowed serious dry time between each coat, two coats of Advance and the results are perfect. Looks incredible/ friends were speechless. Allow enough “ curing time” and you’ll be satisfied.

i have a problem with mold spots forming on the ceiling above the bathtub. I just primed the ceiling with ZINSSER MOLD KILLING PRIMER. I was about to run out and purchase a gallon of AURA BATH & SPA. Now, after watching this vid, I am thinking it is not my holy grail. What BETTER alternative paint should I consider for a ceiling in a high humidity environment? Thanks!
Aura Bath and Spa is a good one if you know how to apply it. We currently use Emerald Matte from Sherwin Williams on bathroom ceilings and that works well for us. It's also easier to work with than bath & spa.
I wantbto paint my bathroom with a shine finish somewhat metallic or pearlescent. Would you recommend the Regal pearl for the bathroom?
We like using emerald matte. If you want it a bit shinier you can go with a satin. Regal pearl would be ok for the walls although most folks that use Benjamin Moore in a bathroom use the bath and spa paint for the walls and ceiling.
Aura matte has always worked well for me! Skip the Aura Spa & Bath and go with Scuff-X in your wet areas. Scuff-X is my favorite on trim. The Dead Flat often makes up for the high price by only requiring 1 coat for coverage. I always add 1 cup of BM extender per gallon to the Dead Flat to improve application.
I still find it irksome to have to add extender to a product that is at a premium price point. Especially considering that there are better performing products at lower price points available.
I’m interested to try the Ultra Spec flat and the newer Command trim paint in Satin. I have heard good things.

Has the Regal Select issue improved for you? I noticed it did sag a bit into trim while still wet. Some wiping and touch-up addressed. The finish is pretty incredible, though.
To my knowledge they have not changed the new formulation. The lower sheens like matte and flat have less of the sagging issues.
Getting ready to paint interior doors and trim in Super White in a semi-gloss. I am a bit concerned about using Advance if it yellows so wondering if Aura or some other paint would be better for this very white color? FYI - the doors are being sprayed and trim will be done by hand....
My current go-to trim paint is emerald urethane trim enamel from Sherwin Williams. It’s a solid hybrid paint. You can get it tinted super white if you’d like. When I use Advance I’m usually using black so the yellowing doesn’t affect it. If you’re committed to Benjamin Moore then Regal Select semi-gloss is decent and so is the ScuffX semi-gloss.
We used Advance satin sheen, White OC-151 on trim and doors and it looks great.
Regal select matte is AMAZING for walls!! I don't really like using eggshell on walls. Don't like aura either. We tried a room with aura satin and it sagged everywhere.
We love advance but don't use it on rainy wet days, it sags and you'll get drips everywhere! We had to switch to cabinet coat satin.
That was our experience with Aura as well. Hard pass on that.
- When was the last time Advance was reformulated ? Does it still yellow the same as the original formula Advance?
I’m not sure when the last time it was reformulated. I’m actually using it today, but it’s an off white. As far as I know the yellowing is still an issue with “whiter” colors.
I usually use the Aboffs ceiling paint, but tried the BM ceiling paint and had a rough time. Dries out way too fast and was dragging a ton.
Im not sure if youve used the aboffs ceiling paint but it seems like the sheen is not as flat as it once was. Im finding lap marks to be very visible and the sheen is not being friendly in hiding them lol
I have not tried the aboffs ceiling paint. Right now we use Promar Ceiling from Sherwin Williams, and we’ve had some success with Super Hide flat from Benny Moore. I’ve heard good things about the Ultra Spec flat for ceilings but I haven’t tried it yet.
We had the same experience that you did with Benny Moore’s Waterborne Ceiling paint. It’s definitely not my favorite.

Dammit in 2019 I painted my whole house except powder room and laundry room with Aura I was going to tackle painting this week and pick up some BM Van dueson blue now I’m shaking my head whether to buy it… any suggestions ?

Have you tried regal select semi gloss since they re-formulated it again?
I have and it’s less of an issue with the semi-gloss since it’s used mostly on trim and doors. Although if you roll it on a surface then sagging can be an issue
I’m wanting bm advance oaint. And match to sw color. Do I need the regular Advance. Or base 1. 2or 3. I’m confused. The sw. Color os alabaster
You’ll likely just need the white base. The folks at Benjamin Moore that are tinting it should be able to answer that question easily for you.

Sherwin Williams has most of Benjamin Moore's colors on file. They'll definitely have Chantilly Lace. Benjamin Moore has a lot of great products, but their Regal Select Interior line is been having some struggles since the new formulation.

Scuffx is probably the most expensive trim gear here in the uk, coming in at around 130 dollars for one of your gallons which is around 3.7 litres, most of our paint is in 5 litre cans and a similar ppg product is around half that price. Needless to say, it isn't widely used here, a very niche product
That is quite expensive for that product. I’d definitely go for the PPG product
The Aura is frustrating with the sagging and I was thinking I was upgrading due to the brand name...I would have been better off buying Behr like I did in my last house.
Emerald Matte from Sherwin Williams is our current favorite for interior walls.

I use the reducer for ceiling paint,15 mm roller..it has the brightest white and with the extender,many times one coat works in smaller rooms..also,the scuff x matte is the hardest paint,just know that it is in no way matte,pretty much eggshell in shine with two topcoats.Advance is great,just do not ever use the extender ,I believe it has one in it,not sure tho.
By hardest paint,I mean-i sand between coats..I had a job where I had a couple of weeks between coats..death in the family..when I got back,my 180 grit wouldn't touch it..I was floored..it was so hard that when they installed the counters,it didn't rip the drywall!I used a heavier grit and that worked..toughest paint out there for sure!
ScuffX does dry super hard and you for sure don’t need an extender for Advance. The open time on Advance is quite generous. We’ll be messing around a bit more with ScuffX in the near future.
My bathroom with Aura Bath&Spa shows drip marks worse than any paint I'v ever used...pretty disappointed for the price point :/ But I LOOOOOVE Scuff-X for my interior doors
Yeah, I’m not the biggest fan of bath and spa. It can be quite finicky to work with. Scuff-X is a great option for interior trim. I’ve been seeing more folks switch over to that recently. Thanks for watching!
Always let your cut-ins dry before rolling! When the cut-ins are still wet but starting to dry and you start rolling it will make the cut-in lines almost like a gummy consistency and that’s why when you start to roll into the cut-ins it starts to sag
I’ve only ever seen this with Aura and Regal Select from Benjamin Moore. That approach is quite contrary to a conventional painting approach which is to roll into wet cuts so that the paint marries up and you get a uniform finish without picture framing. I’ve never had sagging issues with Duration or Emerald from S-W or really any other paints beside Aura and Regal.
@@SuperVassarBrothers it makes the paint unworkable. Even if you're cutting in a space and try to go back into a cut you just did, it does the same thing even minutes later

Yeah…I’ve used it a few times and I’m not a huge fan. In my opinion there are many other better performing products.

I've noticed the new Regal Select will not cover darker colors in two coats where it normally would. Thats been a disappointment.
There’s quite a few things to be disappointed about. We’ve been having issues with that product. I’ll be making another video on it shortly. 😔
First off, before assuming I'm a novice, I have a very lucrative business in a VERY wealthy part of MI and nothing but five stars so I really do know what I am talking about lol As far as Regal. WOW do I regret using it, for the first time, today. I had SO many sags. I had to keep going back and going back and I bet now that I'm home, its still sagging. My local private owned store (Complete Paint) is a benjamin moore retailer but for walls I've always used THEIR brand (superior coatings). Although most of my customers are millionaires (or multi) and could care less how much I spend on paint, I still use their paint (superior coatings) which is $13 a G cheaper. Customer today insisted I use Regal. I did absolutely NOTHING different than I've done for years. Same sleeve, same loaded, same same same other than using Regal. NEVER ever again.
That has been our experience with the new formulation. It’s unfortunate because regal matte and eggshell use to be pleasant to work with. Hopefully they’ll fix the formulation in the future. We use mostly Emerald matte on the walls nowadays. We refuse to use regal.

They have not. If we have to use regal select on a job, we try and use the matte version. It’s less problematic than the higher sheens.

What do you mean by" it sagged" ? Dribbles ?
Not dribbles. In many areas where the cut-ins meet the rolling it looks like melted candle wax. Almost like the wall is melting.

How are you cutting in? With a brush ? Edging pad ? The only thiing I can think of is the bottom edge of the cut in has too much paint. When you edge a wall you always have to feather out the bottom edge. Especially with an edger.This is physical right ?@@SuperVassarBrothers
I'm finding the scuff-x semi gloss and satin is cracking over my caulking. Even when using premium caulking left to dry over the weekend I'm getting spiderweb cracks that take one or two more coats to cover. I've switched to the new regal satin and semi and it's nice. It has a longer open time but its finish looks a little plastic to me.
Use a fast dry caulk. Scuffx pulls on it when trying to adhere so it looks like it's cracking.
I’ve heard good things about the new Command satin from Benny Moore. We’ll be trying it out on our next job and doing a review.

@@Monarchski thanks, I have tried fast dry, still the same thing. Used five different caulking and brands and the best I've found is the elastomeric ones. But even they crack a bit.
I'm painting my Bathrooms and Kitchen cabinets with Advance in a week, I will first sand. You think one coat of Advance is good or should I do two coats? Thanks

For how expensive the paint is, aura should not be doing the melted camera wax texture. It's honestly pretty crappy paint.
What are your thoughts on scuff x in the extra white base? I have no issues with deep base scuff x but find the extra white base does the same gross texture when rolling into wet cuts
It’s been an issue with several products from Benjamin Moore recently. What we have found is that if you let the cut-ins dry then roll into them, then it’s much less of an issue. Weirdly you don’t get picture framing even though for most wall paints it’s a good idea to roll into wet cuts.
@@SuperVassarBrothers yeah I do agree that helps, but sucks waiting around for the paint to dry and it's unrealistic to use in areas that might require a lot of cutting, like in bathrooms or closets with shelves. You always end up running into partially wet cuts that mess up if you go after them shortly after. I wish Ben moore wasn't so good at marketing because it seems like every homeowner is starstruck by BM paint and i just think it's overpriced crap

Not a fan of Aura. Bought it because I couldn't get the SW I typically use. I will not purchase it again. Open time is too long and it didnt hold up well.
I am not a fan of Aura either. It is unpleasant to apply and has a tendency to sag. That’s a big no thank you.

I was sold BM Arrborcoat and it Sucks. I sanded the deck to bare wood, applied the stain in july and it was peeling by October. Was in contact with a rep on the issue, given a bunch of excuses and haven't heard anything back yet. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!
I hear you Tim. The deck products are almost all hot garbage now. The VOC laws ruined a lot of the stuff we liked to use. It’s gotten so bad that we no longer stain decks. We’ve had too many product failures even when the prep was done correctly the way you described.

Its like using aura. My rep told me a couple years ago to cut them let dry. I told people but they don't listen 😂

I’m not a BM fan. I like the “flow” but I find most BM paints have a lower CPVC value. Less pigment means more coats but also equals more longevity.
The price however is ridiculous imho.
That being said nine out of 10 designers I work for always go for Benjamin Moore. Often AURA which I can’t stand.
Ugh, AURA is quite unpleasant to work with. I’ve had the same experience with designers. They can be quite insistent 🙄

As a professional, BM is overpriced in their quality dept. It's hard to make any touchups near impossible to blind back into the new dried finish without flashing. The chemical based binders mixed with a weak amount of acrylic latex just doesn't blind well together. It shows more roller marks over other paint brands. Personally, my company has stayed with premium line Sherwin Williams Flats, satin, and semi-gloss sheens. Touch up after dried finishes are unnoticeable. Saving much extra labor, and saving the customer money. Hope this input helps.
I’m with yah buddy. There’s a few specialty products we use from Benjamin Moore. Our interior load-out is currently all from Sherwin Williams. Formulations change over time, so you gotta keep trying stuff if something stops performing well.
Why so many paints that all seem to do the same thing?
Most paint companies offer a lot of different tiers of paint. The cheaper products tend to perform worse than the higher end products. Then there’s also a smattering of specialty products that are used for specific applications.
How thick are you guy’s rolling your walls that they sag? Damn…
This has been a common issue with the new formulation of regal select, particularly with the eggshell. A lot of crews (besides mine) have experienced the same problem.
Had the same experience with the aura weeping. Will never buy Again for $100 a gallon
Oh yeah man, we had a terrible experience with AURA on a job a couple months ago. That’s really what you want to be experiencing with product that expensive.
Our painter used Ben instead of the regal we ordered and tried to argue it’s nearly the same. I literally touched a wall and it’s stained. Garbage, do not use Ben.
Regal is pretty much garbage right now too if that makes you feel any better.
Im guessing a lot of their chemists are retired. They're going after there bottom line again and messing up the paint

A lot of things you say seem to be due to inexperience. I have never had a problem with any of the Benjamin Moore paints.
I am glad that you have not had a problem with their paints. I would not jump to your same conclusion about the issues we’ve been having being due to a lack of experience. Several excellent crews in my area that I know have had issues with the new formulation of regal select. So much so that they are switching products.
I’ll be doing a video shortly where I talk about this more. My brother and I actually got invited out to Benjamin Moore’s laboratory in Flanders New Jersey where we used regal in their lab and got it to fail in the same way it’s been failing in the field.

The Regal Select Ulti-Matte is absolutely horrible. Although the new formula is significantly better for application and coverage the durability is absolutely horrendous for the price. This paint marks SO EASILY!!!!! I had clients calling me within a month for touch ups. As a matter of fact the Ultra Spec 500 low-sheen eggshell is far superior in terms of durability and in all honesty the finish is not bad especially if you know what you doing.
I don’t know about eggshell. In my neck of the woods people want Matt finishes.
The truth is that SW duration Matt, SW Emerald Flat and so on is A SIGNIFICANT BETTER CHOICE compare to Regal.
That’s my current choice as well good sir 🫡

lol I’ve literally never had any problems with any paint weeping let alone aura or regal…this is 100% the applicators fault. Don’t put it on so heavy 🤡
This is a common issue with the new formulation of regal. I know several crews that have experienced it. It’s quite common with aura as well. Benjamin Moore is also aware of it. In fact, my brother Josh and I were invited out to their lab in New Jersey where we tested the the products for them and got them to fail as described in front of their chemists. They measured our cut ins as well as our rolling and we were well within the performance specs of the product. Just because you’re not experiencing an issue doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I think a lot of the problem has to do with the humidity. From what I understand it’s less of an issue in dryer climates.
3rd reno in five months and everyone is requesting Aura and honestly working with Aura makes me want to pull my hair out. Currently painting a master bath with C-lace Aura Bath n Spa and fuck me. What garbage. Certainly not worth the price. C-lace is tricky to begin with but the tacky weepy quality of Bath n Spa. Fuck my life.
Awe I’m sorry Mike. We’ve had similar experiences recently with Aura. One of the things we were told by some other crews that were having issues with the product weeping is to let the cut ins dry before rolling into them. It’s weird cause that’s not how you typically do it. We also dropped down to a tighter nap roller. That seemed to help but it’s still tricky to work with. Good luck good sir 🫡
Sherman Williams has stayed more consistent and much more affordable in my area. Bm just not worth the money anymore
I find that to be the case with most interior products. Benny Moore still has a few products I really like that are worth the money, but for walls and trim is Sherwin for now.

I doubt it matters, but I’m not sponsored by anyone. Over the years the majority of the products I’ve used in the field have been from either Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams. I do my best not to talk about things that I don’t have experience with.

@@SuperVassarBrothers my apologies. The new Regal Select eggshell sucks. You can’t back roll very similar to the first version of aura. Ok for spraying. The sag is similar but there’s other problems with blending. I think you’re onto something. I hope Ben moore takes notice. The sheen is also to close to Satin. Bring back Regal Classic!!
