Painting Kitchen cabinets without Spraying

  • Most RUclips videos on painting kitchen cabinets require you to use a sprayer which can be over whelming. I've been painting kitchen cabinets since 1992 and I would like to show you how you can get near factory finish without using a sprayer. I will walk you you through 9 critical steps that will improve the longevity of the paint, and the appearance. Your friends will think they came that way from the factory.
    Here are some of the details
    It's nice and easy. Let these brushstrokes just do their thing nice and smooth. Look at that. I'm gonna go ahead and do these edges here. Also, one great big piece of advice is get a brand new beautiful brush. This isn't a brand new beautiful brush but it is a great brush. It's a Wooster brush. Just don't skimp on the brush. You can't get a nice job from a rough coarse hair brush, get a brand new brush or $13 the extenders $10 These little the tack cloths are three or $4 I mean these these extra tools that you'll need to do a great job aren't don't cost much money at all. And they make all the difference in the world. Life's too short to get shit brushes. It's like drinking cheap beer never going to drink beer get a good beer for crying out loud. This is the best analogy I could give come up with the work on better analogy. Here you go. Oh nice that looks wait till it dries it's going to self level even better. We talk always about seeing it with 220 This is a 500 grit sandpaper. Not easy to get unfortunately you could use anything you can sand with cardboard if you want. It's very smooth. And when you go over it there's a big difference. It makes a big difference. This is smoother than this. It's this is this is factory finished smooth. If you go over it with with something around 500 grit sandpaper and just just feel like that with it doesn't take a whole lot of sanding and it really makes a big difference and then again we're going to take a tack cloth and and get the Diddy's off in fact that person would have vacuum it and then I'll take it off and then we'll give it another coat of paint that'll be the last time I have to say this this is as smooth as anything will possibly get if you're going to be getting new knobs or handles and you need to fill these holes in use an epoxy wood filler do not use a spackle or regular wood filler. The shrink. This doesn't shrink it, they say they don't shrink as they shrink. So don't don't use it. These kitchen cabinets came out fantastic and yours will too. Just follow the critical steps and apply the best practices. And you will be amazed at how good your kitchen cabinets come out. Okay, so there's at least one big thing I admitted that I need to give you some information on. Before I talk about my big omission, I just want to say if you're interested in franchising was Klappenberger & Son, if you like this industry, it's a great industry, give us a call, we'd love to talk to you. And if not, you could subscribe so you can get more information or if you give us a like we always like those as well. Alright, my big omission was I was talking about spraying this shellac with a spray can and I noticed I was outside. If you're inside Do not spray the shellac with the spray can you're gonna have to get a quart or gallon of it, get a foam roller, a moderately mid price oil brush will be fine or all purpose brush will be fine just to get the cheapest one because hairs tend to pull out of the brush the bristles tend to come out so and it dries very quickly. Don't worry too much about the finish. It's hard to work with this stuff. And because it dries so quickly, just It's okay it seems very easily so just put it on and we'll take care of it later. Just make sure it's all covered. So I'm just going to stop at this point and just leave a list of materials over here of what you'll need. And remember, don't forget the latex conditioner it
    makes all the difference in the world and make sure you get a cabinet grade paint. Make sure you use satin instead of semi gloss or any other sheen. If you want the standard cabinet grade finish, you can put other sheens on there but satin is the standard. I hope you enjoy this and it was a pleasure putting it together. Don't buy cheap paint brushes get the best. Don't get a cheap brush, get the best brush don't get a mid grade brush. Get a Wooster it's my favorite. You won't go wrong with a Wooster brush that I can assure you. Thank you so much for watching. It's been a pleasure putting this one together. I love to see some pictures of your kitchen cabinets send them to me. Give us some comments and very exciting to see what your how the outcome of your kitchen cabinets are.

    I'm almost ready to start the process according to your video and going with Benjamin Moore paint, per your recommend from another video...happy to send pics and will try to do before and after, bought some high end Maple, all wood, cabinets from my local Restore and saved several pockets of cash vs buying new...gonna be a lot of work, but worth it in the end with all this inflation! Now I need to pick a color and want a nice color vs the average white...thanks for the tips!

    One trick I heard about is to slightly round any sharp edges. Especially for oak cabinets that were varnished often dont have the edges knocked down. Paint doesnt stick well to those sharp edges.

    Satin for Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane is a little to dull, semi gloss on light colors. Ben Moore is fine for satin. Maybe a mohair roller is practical also.

    It would be helpful to see more of a close up of the finish on those cabinets, and compare that side by side to a sprayed finish to get an idea of how closely this process matches a sprayed finish. My guess is that brush strokes are still noticeable. Not that that is a bad thing.

    • @bonnivilleblackcherry9745
      @bonnivilleblackcherry9745 2 года назад +2

      A roller leaves a stipple in the paint that creates more surface area. All this extra surface area causes it to dry before it gets a chance to level leaving a peddled or orange peel look. It could work fine if humidity/temp and air movement is in your favor but all of those are hard to control without a being in a quality $$$$ paint booth.

    • @gregorylyon1878

      CJP. Excellent technical explanation. Love when people can simply things. Simply put you can get factory finish if you have unlimited time and high humidity regardless of the application as gravity will self level anything as long as it can move. Master cabinet painter can use sprayers to mitigate marks and adjusted thickness and dry time for their environment.

    Lots of good tips but according to what I see at 9:45 this is not a 'factory' finish. I can still see brush strokes. I don't believe any brush work can compare to a good spray. I think anyone wanted to do this should go and buy small paint can and do a test. It is true that not anyone wants to buy or rent paint sprayer or want to learn how to use it. Paint one half of a test board with this method brush and other half with home depot spray can and compare which one is closer to factory finish.
