Greenhill Junction - Creating a realistic river scene - Video 66

  • This has been my project over the winter, and my biggest modelling challenge to date, creating the river scene that connects the two sides of the layout.
I had to work around previous mistakes, in that my access was restricted due to being unable to remove the two low bridges, and work to make the farm scene flow into the river scene.
I'll also show you how I used toilet paper to create a flowing effect in the water as I did not want just a big patch of shiny varnish or resin. That was my biggest challenge, creating as realistic looking flowing water as I could.
As usual I've built this using readily available cheap materials to achieve a realistic and very pleasing to the eye scene. This whole project cost me £1.50 for half a bottle of gloss varnish as everything else was created from supplies I've gathered over the years of building this layout, but none of which I would consider as expensive.
Lastly there is a look at my new loco, the Hornby A4 "Union of South Africa" which I picked up second hand at a great price.
Thanks for watching. Please like and share the video, subscribe to keep up to date with the layout and leave any comments you have.

Excellent work John ! Again, nice use of the chicken wire to sculture a realistic riverbank & the use of material -scatters, ballast, grasses etc have produced an impressive scene. Really well done Sir, superb modelling 👏, Andy

Another fine piece of modelling John, the finished product looks really fantastic. I think you embody what modelling is all about for me, coming up with ingenious ways of creating the effect you want without spending a large amount of money. Also not being afraid to use and adapt the methods shared by others. Well done mate. Chris

Hi Chris. Thank you so much. ☺️ I am passionate about trying to show how this hobby can be done with as little cost as possible, it's all part of the fun to create these landscapes with what I can get a hold of around the house! I also think that learning from other modellers and trying techniques you find useful is a great way to enhance your own skill. There is no way I would've attempted this scene without first seeing Chandwell's video. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, John.

Hi Alan. Thanks for watching and commenting. The red bridge is a laser cut bridge kit, the blue one is a scratch build. They do make a good focal point on the layout. Cheers, John.

Hi John- You have made a great job of the river / bridge scene and I like the stones around the bridge pillars and along the banks .
The running shots do show it off well and in fact it reminds me of my trips to Scotland !!
Cheers Kev PS nice bargain with the A4

Hi Kev. Once again my fat finger hits the dislike button, instead of the comment one!!!!! Arrrgh so sorry! Thanks as always for watching and commenting. You know I actually liked the scene better with the red bridge out as I could see more of it. It was so difficult getting that shot of just the Metcalfe bridge. I'm loving the A4. I've been after one of the Great Gathering for ages and actually thought it was a scam the price was so good. Cheers, John.

😂😂 I didn’t notice the dislike . There are bargains to be had out there I managed to pick up a Hornby Class 56 DCC ready for £80 .

I think you’re doing a great job,not many of us are experts so we just do our best….it looks excellent, really like the stone effects around the bridge and banks.
I used DAS clay for my river, rolled it out quite thinly then just pressed my finger into it to form the water effects, once it had dried I painted it then gloss varnish.
Keep up the good work .

Hi David. Firstly an apology, my fat finger hit the dislike button instead of the comment one, so sorry! I've never heard of DAS clay before, but can see how that would be good for a river, and probably save the painting stage before the varnish. I'm happy you like the work and yes, the stones just add something a bit different. Cheers, John.

@@GreenhillJunction I really enjoy your videos…..just down to earth ,reality spending….
You can get DAS clay in Hobbycraft…I used your tissue idea for rock faces…seems to work.

Maybe a fence at the top of the embankment where the grass joins. Should hide the join and it'll stop the cows from wandering down to the river

      @GreenhillJunction  10 месяцев назад

Hi Duncan. Thanks for watching and commenting. I did think about a fence, but thought it might look strange if I didn't run it all the way along to the farm? I know of don't notice the join now that I have the whole scene to look at, but do wish I'd done that small bit of embankment at the same time as the fields. Cheers, John.

Hi Al. Thank you very much, glad you like the work. It was quite a bit of see what happens and hope for the best, in my head at least, but very enjoyable to see it progress to the finished scene. It's such a clever idea and I'd love to see how other people get on with it. I'll need to check out Mark's channel. Cheers, John.

Hi John, I've just finished watching this with my grandson. He likes the bridges and river. He's with us for the weekend, so he'll be finishing off the kit he's building and maybe start filming a new video for his Dylington Model Railway channel. Speaking of which, did you catch his last one, Dylington Rocks, with loud rock music and flashing lights along with a few trains running . He's looking forward to your next update... Cheers James 🙂👍

@GreenhillJunction we had great fun together building the stage and the whole rock concert scene, and then it was over to him for the filming. He's just been saying to me he might try doing a river at some point. He does like your layout 🙂👍
