As a fan of model railways, I love everything about this build. I'm always impressed by how you manage to balance the Wild West aesthetics with the wackier elements.
The Old Hangman's Church used to be on more stable ground, but the rockslide of 46 took out most of the cliff face when the railroad company was building the canyon track. It was, frankly, a miracle that the church stayed aloft. The townsfolk of Hangman's Mesa still haven't forgiven the railroad company for leveling half their town.
I was honestly wishing that he put the church on the pillar one over and just did a double bridge thing. But this little lore makes it so much better. Great job Korra!
I was just about to comment that I thought it would be fun if the church had originally been on solid ground, but had the ground fall out from under it. Your story surrounding this event is way more interesting than the comment I had in mind, though.

You can indeed built an amazing layout, with creativity and passion without worrying about yard operations, realistic time tables, and all the other nonsense die-hard folks get themselves into. I can bet you do enjoy playing with your creation and got a lot of relaxing hours building it and now sharing it with friends and family. You don't need a million switches, complex wiring, endless collection of rolling stock, dcc, or anything much to truly enjoy the hobby! Congrats on a great build and a well done video! Thanks for sharing!
Man, look at that Boylei hoodie! Templates make repeating parts so much faster than measuring - good call. The precariously balanced church and the ramp/bridge is DOPE! Also, the walkways and buttes are simply amazing. The acrylic sheet to cover the edges of the foam is a real pro touch. This really captures the imagination. Incredible work!!
I am just in absolute awe. Every little detail is perfectly imperfect, from the paths to the different types of grass, to the precarious pathway down the canyon (which I find way funnier than I probably should). Plus, the rocks and canyons look like realistic rocks and canyons! And the way it all comes together at the end, plus the inclusion of a working, movable train set- every video you make inspires me, and this one is no different. You and your models and dioramas are incredible!
At the end with the placement of the Black Acrylic sheet, I couldn't help but think you could have made little cut outs of tunnels like a cutaway and show a miner with a pickaxe and a lantern and then further down have other odds and ends in the strata like dinosaur bones, giant crystal giodes, the odd bit of prescious metals/stones..... an ancient UFO craft 👽....all buried at various levels 😆

While I've always found model trains interesting, I had never actually gotten into them. My grandpa, however, had multiple models that he'd pull out when grandkids came over, as well as one he really enjoyed showing off in a small local museum he volunteered at (somewhat small town in Utah). While he was definitely more of a model plane maker, he definitely showed a big appreciation for model trains. This model reminds me somewhat of the model he would show at the museum (which honestly could just be since I haven't seen it in a while and making a connection, but still). While I didn't exactly watch the entire video (I'll watch it most likely tomorrow), it still kind of made me happy to see this. He passed away a little over a year ago, so seeing something that reminds me of him is nice.

Some fun recommendations for improvements to this already amazing project: one, get yourself a 4-4-0 type locomotive, or a 4-6-0 type locomotive. These two wheel arrangements were common sights on western railways, unlike the USRA 0-6-0 that was supplied with the set. Two, repaint the locomotives and passenger cars into your own livery. Making a unique livery and name for your fictional railway can be great fun, and lead to even more creative ideas! I know I've had a lot of fun with creating fictional railways. And three, weather your trains! This one is more of a practical tip, honestly. It's just a bit jarring to see this dusty, realistic desert scenery, and then see a perfectly clean, shiny train race through it. A bit of weathering can really help with the illusion that this is a real place somewhere in the world, and that the train really belongs there. Real steam locomotives, and the cars they pull, are seldom ever as clean as the model is. Oil, rust, smoke, ash, and hot steam all take their toll on the appearance of the locomotives and rolling stock on any railway, and that bit of detail can really make or break a diorama.
I love the weathering idea. If the train you are proposing is much more western like that might be a good idea to. I have one more idea. This is what Luke Towan use to say. Tiny details make big change. I mean the town looks amazing but also so deserted and sterile. You could add there some signs, posts, horse "holders" etc. It could give it an illusion of life. Thanks for the good job. It's been fun to watch it. Cheers
In the late 50s, as a kid, I put together 2-1/ ping pong tables and made a mountain scene similar to yours using HO train track. It made the DS&SSMR train company. “Dixie Southern and Southern Shenandoah Mountain Route.” Scale buildings came from “Plasticville”, a company that made a “pretty real” (my goal) scale building that I could make more realistic by talcum powder and a little imagination. Bushes were made of lichen, a name I learned from my local hobby shop and two bimonthly magazines available for building model railroads. I used a lot of wood fiber plastic. Then, I discovered firecrackers that people bought when they drove through Southern states to Florida. This all evolved into a great layout that lived about 10 years, occasionally replacing Plasticville buildings blown up by burglars. A great memory, thanks. Subscribed and like. ❤
… nobody ever called me an artist (😢 … booho )but I was an entrepreneur. I had a person invest in a Heinz pickle car that sold for a lot of HO train money.
“Log 245. Well, this project has been well over a year in the making, but I think we’ve finally got it down. We’ve managed to construct a central railway through Devil’s Canyon, right next to the first permanent town. It goes towards the gold mine in one of the hills, and will hopefully be profitable. I’m saying that, because we’ve lost many good men and equipment to those treacherous cliffs, so I’m really glad the whole things done. But god knows if it will work… Signed Wilson A. What a charming layout! The wash really helped bring the rock faces to life. I think an "old west" 4-4-0 locomotive by atlas or bachmann would be the icing on the cake!

As someone who has lived in Arizona my entire life and have grown up around the rock formations you modeled I can tell you that you did a very good job
Yeah, he has an excellent eye/focus on detail. The only thing missing is weathering the train and train tracks. Other than that - what an amazing looking project!
Outstanding! You've always created incredible miniature pieces of life and this was on a grander scale. I would definitely enjoy seeing more larger scale creations. And seeing you create them. I live in Florida so personally I would suggest a swampland or coastline scenario. Keep up the amazing creativity. You are very inspirational!
That was amazing! i've accually been thinking of getting into model rail-roading myself and i gotta say i never would have thought of using foam. hope to see more like this
Fantastic build, as always! I do have to say though, I'm surprised that you didn't add any greeblies to the train itself. Can't wait to see even more of this world you've created!
I've been watching Luke Towan's videos for a while now. He's definitely one to learn from. My only tip for future projects: In most cases the railroad companies and track laying contractors often use locally mined stone for ballast rock. This is even more the case in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The result is the ballast of a given stretch of rail is usually similar in color to the surrounding terrain. It's not a choice of aesthetics but rather one of economics. [edit] but I see that you did change the ballast color in the end, so, good job.
Also worth mentioning that railroad companies in the late 1800s and early 1900s built railroads and buildings big enough for adult humans to fit in sizable numbers. Therefore this is not realistic.

This might be my favorite so far, I would love to see some larger builds.
Woah the Durango train! I live a half hour from there!!
you really gotta appreciate the amount of time and effort put into such an amazing piece. it looks so realistic!!
Me and my dad Are building a model train too and this is a huge scourge of inspiration. So cool
This takes me back to my childhood, when I created models as an activity for school. Perfect.
Great to see you getting into model railroads and what a brilliant first one!
grave yard or a mine shaft by the town would have been a great touch!
You're a magician. Bravo.
I’m speechless at how amazing this layout looks, incredible work! 🚂
Therefore this is not realistic.

maybe you like this too!
For some reason, the ballast color is gray on top of the plateau, but brown everywhere else… I wonder what is up with that.

Really nice. I enjoy Luke’s videos as well. Thank You
Looks very impressive. I've used Luke's tips and tricks on some of my diorama's too. Well done!!
Rockstar Games should hire you for the next Red Dead sequel.
My father adored trains, he even wanted to steal one, lol.
He’s been gone for a while, but you brought back just one more great memory I had of him.
Great build! Would have been cool to put a grave yard next to the town !
It was really cool to see a bigger project like this, would love to see more!
Wow! Dedication and skill!
You've been a huge inspiration for me, and today I tried to make something similar to this for the first time
