Ultra-Realistic Muddy River Diorama - Realistic Scenery Vol.15

- Опубликовано: 25 дек 2024
- Have you ever wondered how an ultra-realistic diorama is made? In this tutorial I’ll show you exactly how to recreate an awesome model that is so realistic it will leave onlookers amazed!
All of the techniques I use to build this model can be used for not only model railroading but they can also be adapted to military modelling, wargaming terrain, scenic diorama builders and maybe even movie sets as well. The diorama is built in HO scale and depicts a railroad somewhere in country Victoria Australia, the locomotive is a V/Line DRC and usually ran as a single unit, by the 1980's it was the fastest train in Australia based on it's average speed of 107kph.
If you want to find more information about building dioramas and model scenery be sure to visit www.bouldercree... where I have many more articles and written tutorials.

Things to spot in the video…
1: My daughter
2: A horse eating some grass
3: Where’s Wally 3 times
4: A bird with its wings spread out and his 4 buddies
5: A wandering ant
6: A jumping spider - it actually jumps!
7: A Koala… It’s near impossible to see so I’ll give you a clue, it’s in a tree very close to the dirt road (last clip of the video)
Let me know in the comments if you managed to spot them all
You should make the bottom of the train a little dirty so it seems like it has been in use for a while.
The horse was seen around the double checking to see if the river bed is clean and your daughter was seen helping with the landscaping.
What would an ant walking trough a diorama think.. "oh WOW i'm finally HUUUUGE..". Gets to end of diorama.. "Yay i'm gonna crush those darn huma... oh.."
Found them all!! Birds were hardest to find for whatever reason haha probably because I wasn't 100% certain what I was looking for.
I actually thought the spider was a fly or something at first!!
Luke Towan you should make a camping scene in a forest with a tent and fire!
bloody hell mate, simply gorgeous. Are you looking for interns because I will sweep your floors, and organise your static grass collection.
lol thanks for such a great compliment 😃 It actually turned out a lot better than I imagined

25:55 Wow!!! That bug looks so real
yeah... making the tiny gears to get the legs to work was really tough 😄
I searched for someone to comment this lol
He should have glued it down
Its a dog in HO scale
Accurate scale Australian bug
I swear I’m not the only one who thought the thumbnail was a real life photograph.......like how?!??!
Yes
Sometimes I wonder if he just took a photo of an actual whatever he’s building because it’s that realistic
I cannot believe that the imagery at 29:50 is actually just a set and not an actual place. It's so trippy how real it looks.
I had exactly the same problem! XD
i thought it was a clickbait...then i thought it was a new game coming out
Do I have any artistic abilities? No
Will I try to recreate this? No
Do I still watch these videos cause they relax me? Heck yeah
lol... I'm amazed at how many different people simply watch my video for fun, I'm really glad you enjoy watching 😉
Yeah, I couldn't do this even in my dreams but I still like watching it because it is really relaxing and I like his voice :D I even subscribed a long time ago :D
And then I rewatch them all over and over again.....yea my answer are all no too!!! But love watchibg
Strange I know but these are my "relaxing videos to watch whilst having a poo" I love them!
Just to add, yes that's now!
Please do a snowy scene!! Amazing video!!!
I have been planning a snow diorama, I have all the stuff for it but I haven't got round to doing one yet. I will probably try to do some snow videos for Christmas 2019.
Yes yes yes yes yes! Snow! I want to build my AT-ST as soon as I get the chance (so... in the next years, I guess), and I am still not sure what to use for snow. I _am_ considering baking soda, but I have heard it yellows over time, so do you know anything better?
@@BoulderCreekRailroad you know you want to do this : www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-3480400/The-one-train-d-WANT-delayed-Stunning-images-highest-railway-service-Europe-snaking-snow-capped-mountains-Alps.html :D
My mom has these collectible ceramic houses that she always gripes about having to set up each Christmas, I’m hoping to do a kind of interlocking snowy diorama that can be easily set up and taken down. Would love to see tips and techniques from Luke.
None of your Business it’s all about scale. Get the scale of the detail right and you’ll get a realistic diorama. Everyone likes to use thick, flaky white stuff to replicate snow, but if you shrink snow down to that size it’s really pretty smooth so it’s actually better to use plastic and then stipple it or use some very fine white powder. Also snow is made out of water so it has a clearness to it, a translucency to it. it’s not opaque white, so there’s also that that you have to think about. But again, at that scale, the translucency is reduced. Hahaha. This is what makes dioramas fun and what makes the GOOD ones so realistic!
I don't know what I love more about your videos: the quality of the model or the quality of the video itself. Everything flows. Perfect editing. And you have a lovely daughter.
Thanks Berend, I put a lot of time into editing and doing the voice over for the video so it's great to see that you appreciate the work 😉
@Luke Towan And it shows. I also appreciate the little touches such as the 'where's Wally' jokes and the effort of throwing the can three hundred times to make a cool shot.
Agreed, just watch one or two and you quickly realize ALL he is capable of. Other channels doing the same are very hard to watch, it just doesn't seem genuine in the delivery. Luke , I feel is probably the same in person as he seems to be hosting his channel!!!!!!! LOVE IT SO MUCH
You’re like bob ross, I never have and likely never will make one of these, but it’s so enjoyable and your voice is so nice and calm.
Actually just started trying some of Bob's paintings. It's been a blast and they came out great. Time for a diorama now.
@@ericbloomer4808 wow
This is what I thought for a long time. Watched hobby vids for months maybe over a year and then recently I just started making dioramas and I’m loving it!
SO, i paused it at 29:54 and showed my wife. She asked where that was and could we go visit... As i have always said, your builds are far too realistic for a human, you must be a wizard!!!
lol... that's a pretty good testimonial and compliment 😉 glad you liked the video
If I didn’t see the title I would’ve thought it was real too 😂
I like you box emptying technique at 1:30!

There was an extra dash of swag in this video :)
@@BoulderCreekRailroad Dioramas and speedrun unboxings, this is an excellent channel
25:55 That HO Scale spider is super realistic! It actually moves!
Looks like an ant lol
No it’s a giant ant about to attack the train
You have got your narration/music volume perfect.
thanks mate, it took a fair bit of tweaking so its good to know the background music isn't too distracting 😉
Luke Towan no, the music is perfect and not annoying at all thanks for all the effort into these it is simply amazing
Aaaa I’m so happy to see a new video! I’ve never had an interest in dioramas in my life but your videos have become my favorite thing. It’s so interesting and relaxing to watch! I’m always blown away by how real the water looks, and I just really enjoy the level of detail in everything
thanks mate, I get a lot of people commenting that they really enjoy my videos even though they don't do any actual modeling. Glad you enjoy watching them 😃
Like you Mags, I don't do dioramas nor railways, but these videos are great, no waffling on about the 'Theory behind it', just great explanation of what's being done.
Hello Luke, do you have a personal relationship with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ? The Son of God. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. - Romans 10:9. And please ask the Lord Jesus to bless you with wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and discernment. And please ask the Lord Jesus to forgive you for all of your sins and transgressions.
im not even interested in trains what am im doing here?
Edit: ok watched the whole thing without skipping. Its pretty satisfying.
me toooo :)
Straight goods, I clicked and watched 31 minutes of this. Was not disappointed.
I will be disappointed if I try to replicate it though, serious skill in this mans.
Try this one ruclips.net/video/b25H-5BeWvY/видео.html the way they build a multilevel mine for train set is amazing . Which will have you pondering what exactly @LukeTowam is doing, until you see it rotated. The 2D to 3D visual shifts will keep you memorized, more mental optical flipping back and forth than those mind-eye-puzzles.
@@ablemagawitch I watched it, it was awesome xd
Welcome to the club mate.
Wow, Without writing a long post, This being my first exposure to this hobby, I'll just say I had no idea just how much detail you guys put into this. I'm really impressed. I could never buy anything pre-made but putting in the effort myself to build it would be so satisfying. I am 61 and just became partially disabled. I am looking for something I think I might be good at (with practice). I have found a possible here. Thanks
I really hope that this works out for you, good luck!
Go for it mate, some of the most satisfying and rewarding stuff i have ever done was creating scale model buildings/landscapes when i was younger and they were not even REMOTELY close to the incredible work of Luke, but then they dont need to be when you have made them with your own two hands.
Been doing it for a year, really is fun! I love to give my finished ones to anyone who wants it (mine aren't as big as the ones he makes) Hope it works out for you and happy building :) remember this guy professional, your landscapes don't have to as real, what matters is that you have a great time
"Oh this looks cool, I'll quickly skip through it to see how it's done"
*30 mins later after watching the whole thing*
Well that was amazing, let's watch some more
You are seriously talented at making these, and the way the videos are put together is not only excellent but it's very relaxing!
Hello my Aussie friend. Im 60yrs old and live state side. I've been a modeler for 30 yrs and a friend told me about your channel. Well I've been having fun watching all your vids. My wife affectionately hates you for taking up all my time lately. You are a master and professor to this art! Thank you for sharing your masterful creations. Truly museum quality for sure.
Most realistic diarama I have ever seen!
When it's finished and you are filming outside it blends into the real landscape flawlessly. Well done!

As usual, outstanding work, Luke! The only thing out of scale was the ant, but I'm guessing that the DCCsound.com guys couldn't find a small enough decoder that would fit into an HO scale ant! Maybe you could train him to be a shunter, as they used to do on Indian and Thailand railways!

thanks mate, I'm glad you are able to find some new tips in each video 😃
I could imagine fishing on the banks of this river. It looks so calm and peaceful. It also brought back memories of being a kid and swimming in the river with my cousins next to the railways. Simply amazing at how real this is.
As a 3D artist who creates environments for Video Games, I LOOOOOVEEEE your work! Very inspiring as well as enjoyable to watch! Thank you for sharing these wonderful videos. Cheers :)
thanks mate, I would image creating a 3D environment for a video game would actually be pretty difficult. Glad you enjoy watching and are able to find a bit of inspiration 😀

this came up on my recommended, watched the whole thing with my mouth wide open. Stunning work. if i could afford all the equipment id totally been learning how to build one of these myself on the back of this video! Bravo sir
This has to be my favorite modeling channel on RUclips. 👏. Extremely well done and I leaned a lot. On a side note, the bridge feet you kept referring to are actually called rocker bearings. Bridges can use many different types of bearings but these particular ones are called rocker bearings and are most common on railroad bridges.
In real life the pair on one side will be bolted down and fixed to the abutment. The other end is free to rock on a curved top and bottom. In the warmer months the heat expands the steel making the bridge lengthen and will slightly rock the bearings toward the abutment. In the cold the steel will shrink causing the bearing to rock back toward the river. At around 50 degrees the bearings should be neutral.
I always get those feelings of wanting to live in a fantasy world or dioramas. And always get excited on super realistic ones.
And kept telling myself I can find the real life version in the real world. This made me slow down in my routines and stop time to time to just grasp the views I often overlooked.
Also, you're awesome, dude. Keep it up. Looki g forward if you decide to make fantasy ones.
I’m a artist I draw I like making models but my friend this is absolutely incredible it is so realistic I’m only 14 and don’t have these materials to busy with high school etc. But I’m hoping one day I can do one of these tutorials :)
Any day a new Luke Towan video hits is a good day.
ha ha thanks Chris 😃
Love this video - I watched it some time ago but returned to it after I had Sculptamold problems. I used it directly onto a plywood board, layers no thicker than here and certainly less wet, it went hard but not plaster hard (indoors in a dry home). After several days it went mouldy and I had to rip it all off - I would think twice before using it in future. Thanks for the great videos - always inspiring.
I have a pretty critical eye but from several angles there's literally no way of knowing it's just a model. Fantastic
Couldn't even imagine the things i could have made as a kid for my train set and war hammer if these youtube vids were available back then... :O great work!
Oh man, these would have been absolutely amazing for War Hammer!!! Suddenly I feel nostalgic lol

24:50 - looks kinda like it rained in the H0 world with those tiny drops on the grass ;) Saw a comment regarding a "rainy" diorama and that would be really cool actually :)
Anyway - what an amazing job on this one, the effect is stunning. Turned the video on on my secondary display but found myself watching every second of it with pleasure :D Thanks!
lol that's cool, I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial. I guess you could spray the model in a similar fashion with a gloss medium to get the rain droplet effect? Lots of ideas to test 😀
@@BoulderCreekRailroad I woluld LOVE to see a rainy Diorama! A snowy one would be really cool as well!
