Rivers & Streams - Realistic Scenery Vol.8

- A water scene can dramatically change the look of an already fantastic model and make it look even better! In this easy to follow tutorial I’ll step you through modeling with water from a plain piece of foam board right up to an amazing looking river scene!
This model river is made in HO scale however as with most of the tutorials I do the techniques can be applied to not only HO scale but N scale and lager scales as well. The technique I use can be applied for a slow flowing river or stream modeling a lake, modeling rapids and modeling a waterfall as well.
I use EnviroTex Lite to model this diorama however most two part epoxies will work just as well and you can also use Woodland Scenics Realistic Water which is an acrylic that is easy to use and easy to clean.
A lot of modelers will avoid adding a water scene to their model railroad layout or war gaming terrain because in the past a lot of others have had bad experiences using the various water products however… with some careful planning and proper preparation you should have no problems working with these products.
The technique I use for this diorama can be applied in many different scenarios from modelling a dam to modelling white water rapids and they will all look absolutely amazing. When it comes to adding ripples be sure to only apply a thin layer of Mod Podge, if the mod podge layer is too thick it will become cloudy on humid days as it absorbs the moisture out of the air, the Woodland Scenics Water Effects also has the same problem when applied very thick.
I hope you are enjoying the tutorials, I spend many hours (when I’m not working my day job) filming and editing these tutorials in order to upload them to RUclips. Here are some stats for this video:
Total amount of footage filmed - 12 hours 20 minutes and 14 seconds
Total file size of filmed footage - 104 gig
Total time spent building the diorama - Over 40 hours
Number of photos taken during final photo shoot - 94 (A lot less than usual because it started to rain)
Time spent editing - 22 hours
Approximate cost of diorama - $105.00 (The vehicle was the most expensive at $50 because I had to order it from Europe and pay a large postage fee)

I have said it before, Luke is the best Diorama builder going, hands down.
wow thanks for the amazing compliment Kris 😀
Your welcome, love your work !!
Costanza is right, you are the Best!
Absolutely !!!
Kris Waters I couldn't have said it better myself.
i’ve never made nor do i plan on making a diorama but your videos have turned into a guilty pleasure of mine. keep it up lmao
lol thanks mate, glad you like watching 😀
yung lexington Guilty pleasure? How are these 'guilty pleasures'?
ADarthTokuDalek like i don’t understand why i keep watching them but they’re interesting and in a way satisfying
yung lexington same here
It's kind of like ASMR, but better lol.
TWENTY SEVEN MINUTES of pure bliss right her
27 mix and 9 seconds
Hi I miss you and Gold I miss my birthday and I have never seen you happy birthday to All this week and Red is my birthday
Possibly the best tutorials I have ever seen. Camera work, narration, skill and overall artistry is beyond this world. Thank you for making these.
Thank you, glad you appreciate these. It is hard work and enjoyable.
Yes
Yes indeed. I just did a cutout in my Styrofoam board for a lazy creek or small river. Will (try!) to get Luke's results as I've never done any scenery before. Studying real scenery and watching these MRR channels are a great way to overcome lack of imagination.
I don't even do any modelling, but I still watch these because they're amazing.
Same here
me three
The same”. I especially like the different ways water is made
Same:) And yeh, the water making process is absolutely bewitching
I like to watch these when my anxiety is really bad. Theyre just so calming and theres so much detail to focus on.
I use these videos to ease my anxiety and migraine pain also
After i killed my first victim i also came here to relax...
I like to watch these videos whilst I eat a baby
Elizabeth Gramm I watched Bob Ross videos every night for over a month for that same reason.... then I started painting because of the videos. But yes, listening to Bob Ross talk and watching him create was quite soothing to my anxiety. And now I have this as well.
If you find it calming to watch i highly recommend trying it for yourself as it helps me to force out my daily stress and anxiety!
the bob ross of landscape
I JUST said this and scrolled down. Agree 1000%
the freddie mercury of landscape!
Bruh but Bob Ross made landscapes
@@BanHelsing But not in 3D. ;D
I thought the exact same thing. Bob Ross but working in all 3 dimensions. And also Australian. It probably doesn’t matter if you care about model railroads or modeling of any kind. Who doesn’t enjoy watching a world being created.
I don't even make dioramas, but I oddly feel compelled to every time I watch this. I find it calming, and like to watch these videos before I go to sleep. 10/10 very satisfying
Give this man a TV show :)
Yeah he deserve it 👍
bob ross 2.0
What is „TV“? Is that something like RUclips, but for old people?
@@willburke5384 I was thinking the same thing.
@Austin Ho How would that be different than a Patreon-fueled RUclips channel, exactly? I personally much prefer this to old fashioned tube.
These videos are very relaxing to watch! You have an almost bob ross feel to your videos haha. But I just wanted to say it is crazy the amount of work you put into these, and it definitely shows in your video quality! I especially enjoy the little things like the creative places you will put the list of materials you were currently using! Keep up the fantastic work!
P.S. a series on a large project like a train display would be amazing!
thanks so much for the fantastic comment 😀 I'm in the process of building a larger model train layout, I'm still working on the track layout but I'll definitely do videos on it once I start doing some proper work on the layout.
Luke townan should make these for museums because it looks 100% real 👍🏽
You truly are the Bob Ross of landscape... watching this was like watching one of his episodes. Amazingly detailed work, I'd call that a master level diorama.
Thank you Nick. 😀
The people who give these videos thumbs down must live one sad existence. Great diorama.
TWENTY SEVEN MINUTES of pure bliss right here. LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKE!
lol 😀 it my longest video, I'm glad you liked it
it's weird how soothing it is to watch these things, ey xD?
Bob Ross of the new millenium!!!
Glasseater wow I didn't realize this video was 27 minutes until I saw ur comment !
balaji hustler i know me too 😂 felt like 5 minutes
This is such an excellent video displaying so many useful techniques and with such a high production value. As a miniature painter myself, I will definitely be sharing this with my mini community and also employing some of these techniques on my next display base.
Miniac
I can't stress enough how much I admire Luke. I have been interested in making dioramas my whole life. Now that I found Luke I know how to make them and the materials and equipment I need. You are the best.
It's so crazy how watching your videos is my anxiety relief something relaxing about watching you create these amazing art pieces
These videos are so addicting it's crazy.
lol, thanks so much for watching 😀
The fishing line caught me by surprise.
Landrew0 Not as much as it did the fish!
I'm glad RUclips recommended one of your videos because now I'm hooked.
Glad you like my videos.
Same
pat_snow08 Me too!!!!! I’m not even sure how I got on the first video I watched but now it’s a go-to channel for me.
When I was growing up in the 80's, you could've had your own tv show. Your talent and your video production skills are mad awesome!
How can anyone in this big wide world dislike this guy´s video? The skills and the details are way beyond explanation...
This is so good. I don't model but always watch these videos lol
thanks mate 😀
Luke Towan I just love how realistic you make a scene its beautiful to watch. True talent like this should be what trends on the front page of youtube not them bloody fidget spinners lol
Wuskul Agreed. True talent is often underappreciated.
I don't even like making realistic scenery. Its just so relaxing to watch and watch his man build
Kevin Timmins thanks mate, glad you enjoyed watching 😀
KevTimm same, its calming.
same here. i find stuff like this so cool i cant help but watch it
I don't even make dioramas, I just find these videos so relaxing and pleasing to the eye. This one specifically is my favorite
I really enjoy watching these videos, even though I’ve never done this sort of thing. It’s really interesting to see all the techniques to make realistic water, but the most amazing part for me is when the rocks and landscape are painted. Just how a blank white surface gets turned into such detailed rock faces astounds me!
I'm an illustrator, and I find your attention to detail, patience and very thorough explanations very enjoyable and inspiring. I always look forward to your videos, and this one was, as usual, a real treat. Wonderful work, thank you.
I have never in my life made a diorama but I love your videos. There is something so soothing about how clean and precise you are. I'm always amazed at how real this all looks.
Thanks Emily, its funny sometimes I have no idea how it will turn out but they usually look good. Glad you liked it 😀
4 year old video and still probably the best tutorial out there👍🏼 Thanks Luke
keep coming back to this video! love the realistic look and how much your techniques and technical skills have improved over just a few months!
Found your channel today and realized that almost 5 hours later i was still watching your videos, keep up the great work!
What do you do with all these dioramas? You've got to have a big collection by now! Also, do you have any larger layouts? I know the dioramas are great for youtube episodes, but it would be cool to see a series based on a big train layout!
I totally agree, though he said he was making a layout in his first couple of videos.
yeah the layout is still a work in progress, these dioramas basically just sit on the shelf and after a while some of them may get dismantled to build new dioramas. I'll do some more videos on my actual train layout later on when I start doing some more work on it.
Well whatever you do, keep making videos! It's fantastic to see what you can make and get tips for my own layout.
...whenever I get around to having that kind of time and disposable income.
Can I buy some? :-)
Luke Towan DISMANTLED!!?? How could you bring yourself to do that to such a work of art!
I have zero interest in doing this myself, but happily watch a skilled craftsman applying his skill.
I find this very calming to watch.
I love how all of my favourite RUclipsrs like Primitive Technology, Clickspring and Luke are from Australia - top video mate, love your work!
Hifi Fan cheers mate, I watch a fair bit of Clickspring but I haven't heard of Primative Technology... I'll be checking them out for sure!
Can't forget EEV Blog either! Another great Australian youtuber.
Luke Towan don't forget HowToBasic, he lives in Australia
Hifi Fan HowToBasic is Australian to :/
Hifi Fan àaa
11:25... Whoosh... MIND BLOWN!!!!!!
lol 😀 It's amazing what uses we can find for things that were never intended to be used that way...... if that makes any sense 😀
How can someone dislike this ??? I just watch this one for the first time and i fell in love with his work ! Incredibly realistic...
I usually have trouble sitting through even 10 minutes of any video but I can watch these all the way through it’s so calming I swear
OMG YES!! Another Luke Towan video!
lol thanks mate 😀
Luke Towan I will be getting my first oo guage train set soon!!!😄
You sir are a genius! 😜

The best part about all these tutorials is that living in Adelaide I have access to all these great products ! No more shopping online for me. Great stuff !
AddyC ha ha true! I still buy a few things online but most of what I use for dioramas like this are all locally sourced, cheers mate
Ahh Adelaide, home of the mighty black stump.
dylan curtis, It looks like PVA glue
Luke, you are truly a modelling Jedi and the force is strong with you. I've watched this video about 37 times now, and all your others of course, and have been applying the techniques on my own build - first time doing a river scene. Just wanted to say thank you for putting this together. Really love your work and the way you put your videos together. So clear and easy to follow. Will get on over to Patreon soon. Will send you a photo of my finished project, would appreciate your feedback. Thanks again mate!
OH MY STARS!!! And everything else under the sun! I am absolutely in love. INCREDIBLE!!! MESMERIZING! I need to do this. WOW!
The whole static grass thing is freaking awesome. Genius
I always loved the way he says Isopropyl Alcohol
Man, everything on this channel is so cool! I usually paint and draw but have wanted to dabble in something 3D that wasn't just glued together painted planks. I had no idea what I wanted to try but you make realistic scenic models look so much easier than I would have thought. While I know it takes a lot of work and planning, I think I now have some projects to strive for!
wow thanks for such a fantastic comment! I'm glad I've been able to give you a bit of inspiration and I wish you heaps of luck when you start building your own 3D scenes! It's very rewarding when you finish and have a great looking model 😉
I've spent the last three days all over the internet for materials and inspiration for what I might want to make, the idea is exciting and has me pumped! Thanks for the comment back, I'll definitely be absorbing your content for the months to come :)
I love these videos because it shows how people can create amazing pieces of art and even influence others to do the same.
I dont comment often, but I have to say you are like the Bob Ross of dioramas, every so often you do something, and I think "Aww Fuck, He ruined it." then it still turns out great.
These videos have literally become an escape. They are SO relaxing to watch when I've had a stressful day at work. Keep up the amazing work Luke, you've got some serious talent!!
Ok it is Thursday morning I should be in the gym working out , I just can not stop watching Luke make a diorama. I do Terrariums and small miniature rooms and I can incorporate some of his details in my projects. I do not want to leave this video I need to get going. The soft music and his voice is very relaxing unlike some others I have watched. Thank you Luke
That is absolutely stunning. When i first came across the clip i actually thought it was a real image before reading the title as a diorama. Really appreciate the work done. Many thanks from Scotland.
Fascinating. I'm mesmerized watching you create. Thanks.
I've found a new pleasure in life...and that is these videos.
I love it and will protect it!
Okay, honestly I could fall asleep to your work, AND THATS A GOOD THING! Usually i'm too jumpy and stuff when I try to fall asleep to something like this and idk why but your work doesn't make me jumpy, its so amazing that i can easily relax. Thank you!!!
TIP: I've sometimes used a guy with a fishing pole in my dioramas. However, from an HO scale perspective the fishing line in this case would be just about invisible. For this I tried using the finest human hair I could possibly find (which looked more convincing), but even then I wasn't satisfied. In the end I decided to leave it off entirely. Regardless, keep wowing us all with your incredible techniques and videos. Can't get enough!
You know you've hit the big time when your vids are shared to LadBible's Facebook page - well done, bringing modelling to the masses 😉
lol thanks mate 😀 I was pretty surprised when they asked if they could post it to their page! Of course I was happy to let them spread the message and it looks like they have done a fantastic job!
Love your videos. The work is really professional. I've already learned very much considering no more tutorials than the ones that I have seen.
Thanks again for Sharing with us.
That grass tuft thing BLEW MY MIND...i never knew that was possible without PAINFUL hand insertion into putty...but the final product had my jaw dropped!
Yep, I was thinking of Bob Ross while watching this. It was amazing btw.
I've just made an 8 foot long river section for wargaming. First thing i've ever done using resin and it was a heck of a learning curve... and I only found you after I have reached the finish line basically! :D
These videos are amazingly well put together, thank you for the clear and concise instructions.
My favorite parts of these are the water and grass
something satisfying about them
I have insomnia, but ever since I discovered this channel, sleeping hasn't been a problem. It's just so relaxing and satisfying...
The paint just looks so smooth and beautiful
I can't believe I sat through 27 minutes of my life watching this video when I usually fall asleep in class within 5
Another wonderful video. I don't make models myself, but I greatly appreciate the time and effort taken to make such beautiful sceneries. Well done!
RUclips NEVER get their recommendations right. My curiosity got the better of me with this video. Next thing i knew its 27 minutes later. I was transfixed from the start and utterly mesmerized throughout. Fantastic stuff.
By far the best diorama tutorial I've ever seen. I always come back to this one for help on mine. Thank you!!!
I honestly thought the thumbnail was a real picture for a second. Amazing stuff
Jo King same
work of a perfectionist...pure art
thank you 😀
Your like the Bob Ross of scenery art. Mad props
This is one of my favorites. It is very detailed, educational and well put together.
I will watch this in bed when I can't get no sleep. FANTASTIC
After i kill my victims i also come here to relax...
The static grass blew me away, I've never heard of it
Am I the only one who loves when he puts the grass?
Love the way you made those grass tufts blooming brill
Talk about the effort! You are so precise and all those details makes a it perfection! Keep up: )
This is beautiful! I want to paddle in the water 🤗
If I had one of these in my house I'd apend hours poring over it. The details are excruciatingly good. Makes me want to miniaturize myself and walk right into the scene! Sincere thanks for posting these videos.
It's freaky how realistic it looks...
I like it...
Whenever I'm 40 with kids I'll probably do this to completely remake the entirety of the maps in my favourite video games, assuming my favourites remain the same which is quite unlikely.
Oh! I have an idea for you! Maybe you can make animal prints near the edge of the river for animals that drink water?
that would be an awesome detail to add!
Your comment here has inspired footprints in my next video. Keep watch.😀
can't wait. Inspired me to get on with the train and Thunder Jet layout, only been waiting to start for about 40 years, now have a large workshop for our cars and there's enough room to make a 3 x 13 layout... will keep you posted. Cheers bud.
Astonishing, inspirational and a joy to watch
I cannot explain to you how much your videos relax me
You make this look so easy. If I tried this, my hands would be all sticky, all the materials would be mixed together and I would end up throwing it in the garbage.
don't worry... I have a couple of models that I did a while ago that ended up in the bin 😀
Patience McCloud...
you should do a bay/dock!
You have the talent for teaching. I will be using your techniques on my model railroad. You are an inspiration, and thank you.
This is the first diorama video out of about 13 I've watched that I cared to comment about. Nice work, great tips and beautiful execution. Learned a few things along the way, thank you for sharing.
I don't have any artistic sense...but I really enjoy watch this video 👍
Have you thought of having your dioramas connect together to form a larger layout? Maybe do another diorama that connects to this one. It can have a waterfall, or a hydropower dam, or anything else associated with rivers.
The dioramas don't join together however I'll be filming a waterfall diorama soon and I really like your idea of having it connect to this one. Thanks so much for the great tip! 😀
All of your videos are poems, thank you for sharing
the artistry here is amazing.....technical yet artistic at the same. wonderful.
You should make some type of farmland diorama!!😮😁
yeah I do eventually plan on building a farm scene with tractor 😉
@@BoulderCreekRailroad Awesome! Can't wait to see it😊. Succes with it👍
OMG
I just love it! Your are the master! MY MASTER!
Some of the most informative and well-produced videos on RUclips. Such craftsmanship, and so generously shared. Nicely done!
I can just imagine how wonderful it would be if you were to decorate an aquarium :). So much details, it's unbelievable.
I stumbled across these videos and was instantly hooked! But my question is, what does he do with all the finished projects?
He puts them in his secret bunker, that is camouflaged with static grass and fake bushes. It will never be found because of the realistic scenery.
Same here, watched a few vids of a guy who restores hot wheels cars then found this. Luke you are amazing ! I have now binge watched about 20 videos (when i get the chance) in just a few days and have decided (via your help that you always give on products) to go buy enough stuff for my first SMALL trial of a pond with fisherman, maybe 12' X 12" thank yoso much for what you do and recording it, so peaceful and relaxing to watch.
Wouldn’t you love to be in his will? 😉
I hope he has an enormous model train setup in his basement
@@harrietcraig7817 I would.
Hi Luke,
This is a great video and your river technique, I wish to employ in my viaduct (video to follow).
My question is, having painted the river bed onto a plywood base, can I apply the Envirotex Lite, straight onto the acrylic paint. I’m worried that it could lift etc.
Regards Charlie
Just used enviortec on my first ever river diorama on a foam core base with no additional sealer, then painted with light coats of acrylic and some sponged accent colors. Not a single bubble......Not sure acrylic paint would adequately seal the wood. Mix a small amount of enviortec and apply it to a small area to see. Follow the instructions explicitly ! re: exact equal amounts of resin and hardner, and mixing times. Great stuff....
Amazing work. I haven't done any plastic model building for years. I have been recently finding more free time and considering a return to it. I think this video has inspired to take the leap. Thank you!
Awesome how to video. Your scenery is so realistic that it makes you feel as if you're seeing this from a distance
You should do a diorama with a willow tree in it
Yes, it'd be cool to see some recreation of an actual tree variety. like a big old oak tree. yahoo
First of all I want to ask, how do you fit all your old dioramas on one shelf. The second thing is that you should make more dioramas like the grave yard one where you can see things under ground. Maybe you could do that with a mine. The last thing is you should make a series where you make a small town with a Forrest around it.
Just wonderful.
Love the way it turned out.
I’ve watched probably all of your vids. I haven’t tried to make my landscapes yet. But I am definitely an expert now, as far as weighing down the foam because the glue expands. 🤗
