- Shooting the subcompact and 4" Service model XDs from Springfield Armory - my first impressions! Sorry, I keep calling the Service Model a "Compact" in the video. That's Glock jargon - Springfield calls their G23 Counterpart the Service Model.

"I'm not going to become a gun reviewer" now your the #1 gun reviewer and the only one I trust.
He definitely became a gun reviewer, bless his heart.
The best!
Yes indeed, I first watch his video on a particular gun I like before I buy to here his critics, and pros. 👍🏼🥇🙋🏽♂️
10 years real snappy. Just like yesterday huh
The best my guy
@@luisg8946 same here his opinion is highly recommended for anyone looking to purchase a certain gun an highly appreciated by me
"im not going to become a gun reviewer" 13 years later, one of the best review channels on the tubes.
My first pistol I ever bought was a Springfield XD 45 (tactical). I’ve been told it was on the higher end of a poor mans gun. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! Since buying it, I’ve reviewed glocks , fired glocks, bought glocks. I still prefer my Springfield. Thank u for taking time out of ur day to post videos.
It seems you have become a gun reviewer after all. The best on youtube I might add.
Kaiser C lol litterly
Totally agree. This channel is my favorite gun channel!
I agree...I enjoy watching he and his son. Very straightforward, not cocky or degrading attitude towards manufacturers or calibers. I personally own a G19,20+21 and still don't consider myself only a Glock guy.
I love his channel and love watching his show but when I ask questions I don't get any answers
We talk about you at work all the time man. Henderson KY knows who you are
Keep in mind folks that this was just my first impression. I will definitely get the subcompact back out this weekend, on video or not, and shoot it until I figure out the trigger and where to hold it. You notice that the last shots I fired with it I was beginning to figure it out. That's what I thought might be interesting about doing this; it really was my very first experience with these guns. Watch for further episodes! :-)
My first polymer was the XD40 I bought in 2010. Still have it today, thousands of rounds and no issues at all. I actually like it better than the Glock 23 I bought some years later. It feels great in my hands, I can group very well with it as well as put them center mass or the brain box in tactical mode. Love the XD!
God man these old videos sure take me back. Back before I had even fired a handgun bigger than a .22. I had absolutely no intention to buy a gun, until I wore your videos out and fell in love with firearms. We appreciate you and John and all you've taught us over the years. Keep it up brother.
Since I got the xd essential 45 I gave up my Glock and only carry the Springfield now. I always considered myself a Glock man but not since I got this gun.
My cousin is a Chicago cop and he carries a Glock (not sure which one) .45 ACP. He shot my XD-40 Service model and he liked it better than the Glock.
My local gun dealer cannot keep XD pistols in stock. I guess lots of people really like them.
Ahmad Erakat Glocks are more reliable guns but XDs feels better in the hand and shoot nice (unless they are even slightly dirty) I dont really like the way they feel but i would trust a glock over an xd if it came to life and death. I personally love the M&P 9. Its comfortable, reliable, It will shoot when dirty which is perfect for where i live in Arizona, and its accurate. You should try one, you might like it as well. In my opinion its: H&K>M&P>Glock>Beretta>Ruger>XD>Taurus
I own a G19 Gen 3. However, this xd9 service really feels nice in my hand. I like the 3-dot sights, extra safety, and reg rifled barrel (since cast and reload my own ammo).
Xd mod2 45! Love it
a.mod.2.1 a.mod.2.1 Chicago cop? I wonder how many people he killed wit that gun lmao probably shoots everyone on sight
That time Hickok said he wouldn't become a gun reviewer :)
+mikedd87 Haha.....I caught that myself.......lol

This is a gem. 🙏🏼🇺🇲💜
WE LUV YOU PAST HICKOK45 AND STILL DO. 🙏🇺🇸💜
the XD is a excellent pistol and i dont have any problem hitting center with the XD.
your just not use to it. its not a glock its an XD its a diffrent design so it will shoot diffrently. i think if you shoot it more you'll be dead on soon enough.
He's biased
Well said! I have the 40 and 9, your comment is exactly how I feel!
Because he's a Glock man, he's aiming high. 😉 lol
I’m far happier with my XD than a Glock.
Too bad the XD is actually a garbage pistol
Watched many, many gun videos on youtube, and I have to say that yours are the best. Good, usable information and you always handle the firearms safely. I have the XD 9mm 4" and really like it. After carrying a .45 for a year and a half in the Marines I like the light weight of this gun. And yes, it does have a 6 o'clock hold. Thanks for your videos.
I got my license with no restrictions in NYS! No small task! I plan on getting an xds to carry wherever I go! Thank you guys
Jeffrey Adams you won’t be disappointed. I’m in NYS also and that’s what I carry
Jeffrey Adams sooo lucky I’m in nyc and you ain’t even allowed to carry on your own property
I’m surprised you can even get a ccw and that’s coming from someone who lives in California with crazy restrictions too.
Hickok45 thank you for all you do and for so many years! We're blessed to have you sir!
I own xd40. My favorite and I'm most accurate with it over all others. I highly prefer but an individual leans toward what they are familiar most with. Love the videos. Just straight honest down to earth.
I am a Combat Vet with 15 deployments over a 22 year career and i am very partial to the Sig and H&K style handguns. I carried a 9mm Beretta through Afghanistan and Iraq on every deployment in those areas which i didn't like at all. But now I'm retired i shoot atleast 3 times a week and tried Glock but i don't care for them due to the type of sidearm i was trained with but about a month ago i purchased a XD 9 and a XD 45 and absolutely love them both. Still not like a Sig or H&K but i enjoy the way it handles.
Number One. Exactly, &, the XD, DOESN'T need a "grip enhancement" ... it actually is what "threw off" his point of aim, ...REVIEW A GUN ,AS DESIGNED... I own 2, [ CCW ]
For half the price of Sig or H&K, the XD is a great choice. Accurate, safe and reliable.
This is the first gun I've ever shot and it was about to weeks ago. Felt good. I can see the appeal of firearms in general after that. Just the intricacies and artistry of each small part working together perfectly. It's like a clock that can kill things. I dig it.

You can argue as much as you want...XD vs. Glock but you won't know which you like better until you get them both to the range and have some fun playing with them. I went with XD (I own 3) and they are my go to guns...dependable, accurate and safe. Personally, I like the grip safety and loaded chamber indicator.
The gen1 xds 9mil was the first sub-compact pistol i ever tried out and i had to REALLY convince myself to try other pistols after my first 8 rounds. Fell in love with it. I was stationed in california for 4 years and that whole time tried to force feed myself a glock. Needless to say, i bought an xds 2 months after i came back to texas.
I shot an XD on Sunday at the range, and I fell in love. Even my wife absolutely loved it. I'm definitely getting one for ccw.
This came out when I was a high school freshman,26 now lol dam man that’s wild love your videos man thank you for everything honestly, all the time an care you put into the videos is much appreciated on this end🙏🏼
I was hoping for a better opinion from you, because I hold your opinions in high regard. And still do!! :) I just bought a SA xdm 9mm 3.8 subcompact, because the dealer talked me into it over the Glock 19. $100 more, but I like it. It doesn't tip, as much as the Glock 19, it has a straight back recoil, that I like about it. It's become my edc now, and am very pleased with it. I'm still a Glock fan, but I really like this gun. Thanks for the vid. I always appreciate them. Always great stuff. :)
The 3.8” is compact not sub
Purchased my little jewel XD9 subcompact from Classic Firearms in 2019 and its an awesome ccw! Fits like a glove in my For the People iwb holster! It's funny watching Mr. Hickok45 try to load the magazine because they're the absolute hardest magazines I've ever tried to load! A magazine loader is a must with them if anyone plans on purchasing any XD. The plus side is that I'm not worried at all about worn magazine springs with those little monsters! But man do i love that little gun! God Bless guys and gals!
Got an XD 40 new for 350 bucks. Great gun, accurate and low recoil.
Thats a great deal :D
I have carried a Springfield sub for the last 4 or 5 years. Absolutely love it! Fits well in my back pocket, bathrobe, tackle box. Shoots excellent.
I happen to love the grip safety on the XD's. It requires you to take control of your weapon before you can chamber a round. I always carry with a chambered round and safety off, so the grip safety as with the 1911s makes the weapon fast as well as safe. Glocks have a habit of shooting it's owner in the leg (Glock-leg is an actual medical term) because some people still want to draw their weapon with their booger hook on the bang switch. Not hating on Glocks, but an added, non-intrusive safety feature like the grip safety would be a great improvement. If they did that, I might even consider owning one.
Yikes! I live my xd no doubt. But I'm afraid a grip safety will not be if any use to anyone pulling their gun out, if their finger is on the bang button. That would mean their hand is wrapped around the grip safety anyways. Just wanted to point that out.
Booger hook! LOLOL!!!
I bought this pistol from Springfield when they first came out. I love it. Never had any problems with the XD-40 I own.
Mag is stiff at first, but with use it quickly gets easier. Light trigger. I like the pin that tells you it is cocked, and the indicator to tell you a round is in the chamber. Both are easy to check even in complete darkness. Very reliable. Over 1000 rounds and no issues.
Glad you reviewed the XD. My son fell in love with it and I bought him one. I really like EVERYTHING about them. The looks, the feel, the controls, the trigger, sights. Except for one thing. I CAN'T SHOOT IT!
I haven't tried but a couple of times and your revelation of the 6 oclock hold may make some difference, but I shoot it all over the place. I hunkered down and gave it all the steadiness and eagle eye that I could and shot 4 bullseyes in a row, then I lost it. I believe that I can iron this out with more practice and hold off being disappointed until I've gotten used to it. I haven't looked to see if the sights are adjustable. I believe my son shoots it pretty well, so it probably isn't a sight issue. Usually I transition between brands of guns easily, taking a few 'adjustment' shots, but this is tougher. Thanks for all of your vids. If I need to know something about a gun all I need to do is search Hickok45 and I'll find it.
My choice is the XD over a Glock any day!
Little did he know 10 years ago that hed be the number 1 gun reviewer on RUclips with 5 million subscribers! Thank you hickock for everything you do!
I bought the XD for my first gun and I tried the Glock 43 and didn’t like it. I know, how could I not like a Glock? I was not experienced in semi autos at all but when I shot the XD. It just fit me. The only thing I can complain about is that I should have bought the XDS, it’s not a dbl stack so it conceals better but I do love my gun.
I don't like Glock either. Not ergonomic
The xd feels better, shots better and looks better than a glock, I think glocks are ugly as hell.
@@zachmasters7397 glocks are ugly
I own three different XD's and am very happy with them. XD-45 Service 4 inch barrel, XD-40 Tactical 5 inch barrel, and XD-9 Subcompact 3 inch barrel.
Lol, "it's ok, different from the Glock... I'll keep shooting it.".
XD9 was my first handgun, love it. I like that it's a tad more top heavy than a Glock, helps with recoil.
So cool to see how far you've come. You're the best buddy. Always love your reviews.
We just bought an XD sub compact 9mm. We tried that and a Glock 26 at a shooting range. We liked the trigger of the XD. We both thought the XD had less recoil.
You don't like that BEAVERTAIL
Who's "we"
We? You got a mouse in you're pocket?
I own both G26 and XD9 Sub and the XD definitely has less recoil then my G26
Hickok45, the king, respect you sir, you have helped me, taught me, instructed me for years, making me a more informed, safer gun owner, thank you sir, and John also, God bless.
Seems his Glock bias is preventing him from liking it.
It wasn't hitting where he was aiming. That's a legitimate concern. He's not exactly new at this.
6 o clock aim I have 2 inch grouping from 20 yards
@@Falconryder it's not the gun it's the shooter.
Love both XD mod 2's in 4" &3".
Trigger and sites are better than in the Glocks. Easier take down as well. They also have a fully supported shell case when in battery, chamber unlike Glocks.
Its him shooting everyone shoots different. I know hes not new to this but hes not a marksman😂 thats apparent

Great video, hickok45. I really enjoy your videos and it's very refreshing to watch gun demonstration videos that last more than a minute. I've always liked the XD series but have not been able to get my hands on one (yet), but your video provided a very good idea of how it operates. Being a subscriber of your channel, I know you've shown a LOT of your own guns, and I think it's great that you're venturing into some of the newer guns out on the market. Keep up the great videos! :)
lol he is the best gun reviewer now
yep
Clint Lytle I personally prefer mixups reviews, more so because of the amazing scenery of where he shoots but I like Hickoks just as much
Am I the only one who found the light reflecting off the swinging targets to be super cool?
@natoration , It's still early; that was just my first impression.
@Hickok45 is like the only RUclipsr with several millions in subs who actually takes the time to respond to his viewers and supporters. I’ve noticed over the years and the massive growth of his channel that it’s kinda slowed down but nonetheless he’s still my favorite go to gun channel.
He never tries to flaunt how deep his pockets are like all these other gun channels.
Thanks. I try to answer as many comments as possible, but way too many to even see, of course.
And, yes, my pockets are pretty deep. I take every pair of shorts and long pants to a local tailor and have her deepen the pockets so that I can pack whatever pistol I choose. This is not a joke. She does a wonderful job of it. I've talked about it in Sunday Shoot-a-Round videos. :-)
Good review. I shoot an XD40 and really love it. I'm very picky on trigger feel and the XD is superior to the Glock for me. I like a crisp, light trigger and the grip fits me well. Mine shoot very accurate. Probably around a thousand rounds now with no function issues. Very smooth. The tactile indicator is very handy for night use. When we're camping I don't leave a round chambered. (Grandkids). My wife loves her XD also. Fits her hand very well. Happy trails.
I agree
Happy thanxgiving and & god bless hickok,Thank you for all the time and wisdom on the handgun's,when I first started watching I got a good understanding of semi-auto pistol & magazine's (not Clips) anyhow im finally getting my M&P 40c in march or april of 2014 and after that ill get the Ruger SR 40c and then as my last subcompact (for a while) will be this Springfield, watching You has really helped me in relaxing with semi-auto's you are a great instructor, I also watch 1 more serious instructor and watching You Old pro's feels good, life's good on the compound!
My very first pistol was an xd subcompact. It's a bit top heavy but overall a good gun. The field strip is very simple as well.

Mr. HickGlock45's first initial impression " it's not like a Glock " Good review Mr. Hickok45 and John nice camera work .
Lol I know this is back from 2010, but I love how he says he "won't become a gun reviewer", and now four years later he's one of the top RUclips authorities for gun reviews. :D But the XD line is incredible, I just got an XD-S for my CCW and it's awesome!!
I’ve sold an bought the service model 3 times. Found it on sale at my LGS for $350. I’m gonna keep it this time. Great video. I’ve watched a few times 👌.
@KURSSLEY, Acutally, I've finally tried them myself, and they are pretty nice. I've had a mental block against rubber grips of this type as a result of trying another company's rubber grips several years ago. I had not even felt the Talon rubber grips.
I'll be posting a video this week with Talon rubber grips on the pistol.
I carried a Glock 21 as my primary duty. S&W as well. Military carried 1911, Berreta M9, Sig, HK and few others. I prefer the XD it has a grip safety like the 1911 except its striker design. No mechanical safe/half cock hammer. I agree with your comment every platform has its sight view either 12 or 6 o'clock position. Hope you decide to keep the XD 45. Happy shooting.
AAAAAA! you almost had it man... that "some kind of magazine loader" is there because the "magazines are stiff, whew i'll tell you that!" i wanted to see you get it so bad! that loader makes all the difference!
I just recently purchased a XD 9 subcompact. I have big hands, not huge, and I love the feel. It is not too small and it is a sweet shooting gun.
Love my XD 45 , bought in 2005, shoots perfect and accurate everytime.
I own the XD 9 tactical mod.2 with the 5" barrel and let me say I love it, very accurate, very well engineered, and it will shoot the cheap ammo like tula with no issues and easy to clean also so many mods you can install to truly make it yours.
Springfield XD although a little more expensive than a Glock I feel is a higher quality made gun very comfortable ADS (aim down sights) faster especially from unholstering the only negative I've ever heard about the Springfield is not having Factory hi cap mags (13+1 45 acp is the biggest I believe) which Glock does but they also make a machine pistol. But from my experience if I had to pick one it would be the Springfield having said that I still would never turn down a Glock and if you went and bought either you would not be disappointed
They have terrible mags
More expensive than Glock? I paid $339 in October of 2020 new in box
I'm here 10 years in the future. It's the year 2020. Hickock said he's not going to be a gun reviewer, little did he know he'd soon become one of the best gun reviewers on RUclips
Rented the full size XD9 at the range today. I rented an XDS-9 before and wasn't thrilled about it. But I really enjoyed shooting the XD. It was very accurate for me, felt nice in the hand and I really liked the trigger. For polymer-striker guns I've tried the Walther PPQ, every size Glock, Sig P320, M&P Shield, FNS 9 and Steyr M9. Despite the great guns in that lineup so far the Springfield is my favorite of them all, call me crazy if you want. :) Maybe it was that being a range rental the gun had so many rounds put through it that the trigger has smoothened out, making shooting that much easier. In any case, shooting it was enjoyable and might have convinced me to pick one up at the next opportunity.
Wow I don't remember posting this a year ago, time flies I guess lol! Came to this video since I might finally get around to picking up an XD9. For the "millions" of viewers that read my comment (hey at least I got a like;) thought I'd share my opinions on the striker-fired guns I've tried over the last year or so. XDS45: Surprisingly mild recoil for a sub-45, and very accurate with the 3.3" barrel. S&W MP9C: One of the best in its class. Put Talon grips on and it's flat out amazing even without an Apex trigger. Glocks: I just don't care for them anymore. Go ahead and cuss me out fanboys, it's youtube so I don't care. Do they shoot great and are they accurate? Very much so. I just don't get why they have such a following. (continued)
Walther PPQ and Sig P320 full size: The more I shot them, the more I fell in love with them. I came to realize I'm faster getting shots on target with either of these 2 than any other in its class. Slight overall edge to the P320 overall for me personally, but I'd easily recommend the PPQ to anyone. HK VP9: Didn't care for it. HK should stick to hammer-fired guns. Ruger American Pistol: Rented it. Trigger felt slightly heavy at first but got used to it. After shooting a box of 50 rounds I came away very impressed. Didn't feel any discomfort holding it the way some reviewers/commenters seem to complain about. (only one more comment coming I promise:)
Ruger LC9S Pro: It's my summer carry. A bit snappy but not uncomfortable. Love the trigger pull, feels like the one on the PPQ, very fast. Last but not least, the surprising Taurus PT111 G2: Over 500 rounds through, so far it has not malfunctioned. Accuracy is wonderful. As a CZ fan I have to say that this Taurus' grip is one of the best I ever felt. Despite the generously low price and considering the quality of other pistols in the Taurus lineup it seems they put everything they had into this gun, and IMHO they did everything right, except for one thing.....the trigger. I hate it. I don't experience long trigger travel with it, but when it gets to the wall I sometimes think, "uh, is this thing gonna fire?" It's like it takes an extra tug just to break the wall. For me, if they made the trigger more (ok I'll say it) Glock-like, or even S&W MP-like, it would be the perfect gun. Anyway, thanks for those of you that stuck around to read all of this :) Cheers
My husband and I are searching for a firearm for home protection... it’s coming down to the XD or GLOCK, something we both and our 13 yr old daughter can pick up and shoot, if need be, hopefully we will never have to. Great video, blessings!
@deroark , I might shoot them more accurately after a little more shooting and getting used to the trigger, but I wouldn't expect any change in the actual guns.
And still the man years later 👏👏👏👏 bravo
It's interesting that when I put my G27 side-by-side with the XD subcompact, the G27 IS more streamline, but I'm surprised to see that the slide on the XD is a wee bit "taller" than the Glock but not as much as it appears from one's first impression. HOpefully, the rain will hold off some this weekend, and I'll get a chance to shoot them some more.
First pistol I ever bought was the XD45 4in. I was 21, Im 36 now. Never actually watched a review of it til today, and OF COURSE, Hickok would have one. Of all the pistols I own now, I still have my XD on the nightstand, all I had to add was a light.
"I dont think im gonna become a gun reviewer"....4 years later..still going strong!!
Good video, and I love your sense of humor. While I've fired a Glock 17 and really liked it , I just prefer the grip angle of the XD and the way it feels in my hand. I guess that I've been lucky and never had the problem sighting the XD in. The sub-compact (3 in.), and the XDM tactical (5 in.) have been spot on in the accuracy department. Oh yeah, if you use the loading tool to load the mags, it's a lot easier and a lot less painful to your thumbs. Keep up the good work.
The XD is great after you get the feel for it, and very reliable as well. I love mine!
smooth as butter, the best trigger pull ive ever expierenced on any weapon,
This guy is a glock lover!
@1PATRI0T , Well, I go back to the days when nobody made guns like this at all. When you date back to the days of steel revolvers and steel 1911s, all these polymer guns appear similar in the most fundamental ways. Of course, they are quite different when you dig into them and shoot them.
Ten years later, it’s a good show.
I have fired more than 50,000 rounds on my HS2000 (XD) in the past 10 years, and this is my second favourite gun, the first being CZ75B, than XD, than Glock 19.
