Glock 23 vs XD Service Model

- Shooting and comparing the Glock 23 and XD Service model, my final look at the XD Service model. I did some very average shooting at one point with the G23, and was truthfully getting a little frustrated (You'll know where I mean), but I'm assuming you'd rather see the Hickok45 "reality show" than for me to start the video again, just to demonstrate better shooting. Yes, I, too, on occasion get into an accuracy funk . Perhaps it's that I'm overconfident, or I slip into a slight trigger jerk without knowing it. I had been shooting a Glock 26 with Steve, and perhaps the switching of calibers was part of it. Guess there's a reason for the line, "Beware the man with one gun" !! :-)

Hickok45 videos are filmed on my own private shooting range and property by trained professionals for educational and entertainment purposes only, with emphasis on firearms safety and responsible gun ownership. We are NOT in the business of selling firearms or performing modifications on them. Do not attempt to copy at home anything you see in our videos. Firearms can be extremely dangerous if not used safely.
one thing i like about hickock 45 is he dont have to wear all those tactical clothes like he is invading a foreign country to shoot at the range.some of these guys have to wear full military attire just to shoot at the range, its hilarious to me
It's like they're 5 years-old still, playing G.I. Joe. It's pathetic.
TheAngeloakers Some of us train like we fight and fight like we train... Sure there are those tho want to look all tacticool, but there is something to be said for wearing to the range what you wear to work (for those that serve in LE or Military), or something similar. Just saying.
Roy Farber Makes sense but most guys are just playing G.I. Joe...
A lot of people like to dress as tier 1 operators when reviewing guns....
LOL! I agree. Hickock's a down home good ole' boy. And a tremendous shot. In combat, he'd be Some sniper!
I absolutely love the XD. I'm happy to see you give it its due praise.
I bought one of the original XDs back in 2008; 5" Tactical in 45. Shot anything I put through it without a single jam and was accurate as hell. I still regret selling it.
I had that same thing it was stolen from my house I loved going to the range and hitting target at 75 yards with Shaniqua that was her name.the glock guys were always mad because of the good shooting I put over 3000 rounds through the xd zero jam and a few free beers I'm in the process of getting a xd again. Good luck, be safe
Springfield XD 9mm all the way. I own the first gen XD and it feels way better than the Glock. Did I mention I'm a Glock fan?
do u use it as a ccw
+DaShneeko Good honest glock fan tellin how it is. Good job.
I owed and shot the G19 & G21. I like Glocks pistols!! I just seem to be more accurate with my XD-9 Service pistol.
Go home plastic boy 👦 🤣 😂 👍
DaShneeko same here. I own a Glock 19 and XD 40 & I love the XD more it even looks so much cooler not some boring ugly block with no lines or design at all. But Glocks are the Toyota’s of handgun
I don't think you've ever been a fan of the XD. You didn't like it since your first video you did. That's okay. It all comes down to personal preference. We all like different guns for different reasons. I used to have a G23. I just couldn't get over the hump in the grip. So, I sold it. Great video, as usual. Thanks.
The grip safety, chamber loaded indicator are real plus's for me and the XD runs beautiful.
At the end of the day, both are excellent. In the Springfield lineup, I have the SC 9, SC 40, XDM 45c, and the XD 45 Service pistol. And of course the TRP 1911.
Glocks, I own the 17, 19, 20, 22, 23, 26, 27, 29sf, 30sf, 35, and the 44.
If you like simplicity, ease of maintenance, aftermarket accessories, cheaper replacement parts, and dealing with less than 30 parts? Go after Glock.
If you like the 1911 style grip angle, lifetime warranties, and excellent customer service living up to that lifetime warranty? Go after Springfield.
Both are great shooter, and more accurate than any human. As far as shooting comfort, it is subjective, and can be influenced from which a person has most experience shooting. If recoil sensitivity is a concern when shooting 45acp, I would say the Glock 30sf is probably one of the softest shooting 45s I have ever shot. But, the XD & XDM are not too far behind.
On a comfort of carry standpoint? Both have advantages & disadvantages. The Glock is lighter, and a shorter grip conceals slightly better. But Glocks (primarily the 29 & 30 models) are noticeably thicker behind the belt, which can be uncomfortable for some.
The XD/XDM models IN 45ACP are much thinner in the frame area, which can provide comfort on the belt line. But where you give up width, you will add weight. Their is a nearly 5oz difference between the two.
All that said, their is a reason I like both brands. They are reliable, accurate, and handle extremely well. You cannot go wrong with either.
XD feels more solid in my hands but I like Glocks too.
Shot much better with the XD... Much much better
I'm purchasing the XD Mod.2 4.0 Service Model in bitone. That gun is calling my name.
It's a great gun you won't regret it. Worth every penny
Me too, just ordered that exact gun today, will pick it up Tuesday. Looking forward to it. I know everybody is making fun of the "Grip Zone" but I don't really care, it doesn't bother me and the gun feels great in the hand. Same reason I bougt an HK VP9.
I've had mind for 4 days now in the bi-tone and I love it
I dont mean to sound like an idiot but the glock hickok has shots for years and years quite often knows it inside and out the xdm he started shooting more often but doesn't know it half as good as his glocks. The xd shot way more accurately with a hundredth the training he has with the glock, it has more features such as better sights it has a rail has more safety features, its nicer to look at, it has way better ergonomics its just as reliable and its just an overall more well built gun but any glock fan will still agree the glock is better? It just makes absolutely no sense to me.
I can't knock Glocks but for me the XD is a better gun. I love my XD 9mm, it's my conceal gun and it feels very comfortable.
I'm also not knocking glocks at all either they are great guns but I believe every on makes up these fairytale stories because they have been reliable for a while and that's great and all but its 2015. Glocks are not the only reliable guns, Springfields are just as reliable and look better and have more and better features
you can get glock parts all over the place, cheap. CAN NOT GET an extractor for the springfield. You have to send the whole gun back to the factory. WHY? Because Interchangeable parts is this brand new thing, this crazy concept that's only been around 150 years or more.
Robert Maybeth Honestly, this is a sad truth. I am not a fanboy for either brand and recognize both glocks and xd's are fantastic firearms. As a shooter I PREFER the XD. The grip is superior in my opinion. I carry an XD service model daily but WTF?! Why can I not get parts like I can a Glock? Then again, I've had my XD since 2006 or 2007 and only have about 4k rounds through it. No breakages thus far, and I can probably double the amount of years before I have a catastrophic failure.
To bring it down its better but unfortunately its not a Glock ; ) Yes there is some cult around the Glock but its vanishs more and more. There are so many better striker fired pistols out there.
After watching your videos I purchased a Glock 23... now a year later with a Ghost trigger spring a mod Truglow nights I installed !! and well over a thousand rounds through it ..I can't tell you how impressed I am with it.. It's deadly accurate and extremely fun to shoot. Being an old former CPL USMC I was stuck on the 1911's and for the last 25 years and 60 or 70 different fire arms in and out of my possesion I am in complete agreement if I was only allowed one hand gun it would be a Glock 23
I've shot both and for me the xd all day. The grip is better, the trigger is way better, and the slide feels nicer... in my opinion!
Oh yeah been there done that; both. I like the XD line much better.
Ive been deciding between the XD and the Glock I have a sig 9mm but I'm not sure which one of these I want. You think the XD is better?
I want your range, must be nice having that as your back yard.
Bottom line is you shoot the XD better despite you shooting the Glock more is a far superior gun. You shooting better with it when you don’t even care for it just proves it’s better. I own a Glock 19 and XD 40 & I also shoot the XD more efficiently.
Just got my first XD 9 today and this video confirmed my purchase 🇺🇸🇺🇸
@Justshootinpaper , Tell you what, the thing shoots very well, that's for sure.
I went to the range and rented both 2 weeks ago I was hard to decide which one.But I bought the XD40 it was more accurate and since I have a kid on the way I went with XD. And They give you 5mags and a range bag.But still have the Glock in mind for my next gun love them both but safety is key and you can’t beat XD
Your honesty and integrity are the MAIN thing that turned me into a loyal viewer and Hickok45 Fan! Thanks for staying true to yourself and to us! Anyone can look perfect with enough retakes. When you miss, I'm actually encouraged about my own shooting. THANK YOU!
Almost had me in tears when he pulled out his scale hahaha
For the life of us, we can't figure out how to turn off the camera. :-)
You think?
One now that i’ve own my XD-40 service and the Magazines most definitely got so much easier to load no need for the speed loader which I did use for the 100 rounds I put through it.
I also made it my main carry gun with the 9mm Shield by S&W 3 inch as my back up carry gun. I plan on selling my Glock 19 & getting the FNL FN9 striker fire which is such an underrated impressive gun I have to say. I fired one at the range I got to & was blown away at how well I fired it and just how beautiful it was especially next to the boring basic Glock 19 that nearly every woman & beginner gun owner owns the FN9 has a classic upscale look while having the same benefits of a quality striker fire.
Anyways that’s my gun journey a year from when I first commented on this video, lol.
@vaderx360 , Thanks. Part of that might not be my objectivity; it's the fact that I've hardly seen a gun I didn't like! That's my problem - I like them all, at least to some extent. :-)
I carry the G23 on my person all the time. I couldn't agree with you more. In my opinion there isn't a better and more reliable handgun out there.
I own a Glock 19 and an XD9. Love ‘‘em both.
Love my XD full size .45, never had a jam or misfire except with a reload. Got it in 2010 put at least 10k rounds through it. Feels great in my hand and aim is excellent and natural. I was a PMI in USMC with the Berretta 92F 9mm & M16A2. I did not care for Berretta. Just did not fit my hand right.
Thanks for sharing Hickok!
@ccsniper , Not really, mainly because you can generally not shoot steel and stuff at a public range. I do miss out on meeting people at ranges and checking out their guns. That's always fun.
I have been looking at a Glock 19/23 and the XD Service in 9/.40. I am really glad you did this video, and your others about the guns. I havent shot a XD yet, but have shot glocks. I like both platforms, but after seeing your vids, I am pretty confident in either platform. Thank you for putting these up!
@JohnnyQ
@JohnnyQ
No. The Springfield XD is based on the HS2000, which is made in Croatia. See with Wikipedia article.
GLOCK is made in Austria, though a lot of manufacturing is now taking place in the USA.
I’ve watched this video ten times I bought my XD 40 back in January but know I’m buying the gen4 Glock 23 I want both because they both rock!!!
i have a 23 and love it
This guy's sense of humor is classic.... Another great vid Hickok.
@smttysmth02gt , It's the way I've always done it in competition. I believe that it's recommended actually by the "experts."
That XD service model is a very good gun. I like mine a lot. Talon grip and upgraded night sights 👍👍. You shot the XD better than the glock. If I were you I would've definitely hung on to the XD. There's always room for one more pistol.
I have watched most of these shows and Hicky is the most common sense and informative. I have purchased pistols on his opinion and he knows what he is talking about. He does not have the know it all atitude, he has suggestions. Just got my XDs and my 21c both 45. Thanks HICKMEISTER .
@miltnxc123 , You cannot have too many magazines if it's a gun you're planning to keep. One never knows when some windbag politician will try to ban certain magazines again, pandering to certain "feel good" groups and such. I went through that crazy time of having to pay $100.00 or more for a simple Glock magazine. Never again! :-)
@CoolUnderFire21 , Not sure I have any tips, except that that is how I shoot. I just lay my head over and shoot with my left eye.
Had a G 34 for years then I picked up a XD Service at a gun show .
Traded the 34 right there.Has been 12 now with it and no regrets, It shoots much better for me.It has about 13,000 rounds put through it .the only mods ,speed night sights.powder river roll pin in slide and a aluminum cocking indicater collar.
I like his honesty. He isn’t trying to convince you one way or the other. He tells you his honest opinion of the weapon and that’s that.
@mtefft , Thanks. I'd really feel bad if any vets didn't get the joke.
@AlfonsFromAtech , Thanks for the comment. John and I have had trouble remembering where I made the "misspoke" Richard Blumenthal joke about Viet Nam. Your comment took me to it. Since he's not in the news as much now, I wanted to annotate that video to explain the allusion.
before I decided to purchase a handgun system for me and my wife, I tested out the glocks and the XD's. I ran a spreadsheet of the pros and cons of each from my personal perspective for what I wanted. The XD beat the glock 89 points to 87.5 points. The two were so negligible, it's like trying to compare a Civic to a Corolla. They both serve the same purpose. It becomes semantics and personal preference when it comes to so many firearm categories.
@shadowsteel5 , Don't recall the website, but they are made by Howard Leight.
@hickok45 The slide release is weapon specific, power stroking the weapon works on everything. Some also say that the slide release is a fine motor skill while power stroking the gun is a coarse motor skill.
I have a G23 and an XD compact/full size XD45. I love the Glock but the XD for me is a lot more accurate. Still wouldnt give up my G23
While a sheriff's deputy, I was required to carry the 23. Upon retirement, I went with the XD40. For me anyways, it's a better fit.
hickkok45 is easily to tell a diehard glock fan, lol. I use to be one as well until I shot a XD 9mms service recently. Sold my G19 and now own a XD 9mm Service model. I absolutely do not regret it even a little bit. My cousin followed my lead and traded his G17 for a XD tactical 5" after shooting my xd.
cause XD is a "rebrand" of some Croatian JUNK pistol....simply slapped "springfield" on it...
"i've gotta get back into my Glocks is my problem" lol priceless. He still shoots better on a bad day than I do on a good day.
@deroark , I lke it okay, but I have way too many guns already. I can turn it into something else interesting, something interesting to me and maybe interesting for you all to see reviewed.
I like Glock and have never shot a XD. However, that XD clearly outperformed it’s Glock counterpart. Just think about how many rounds this guy has run through Glocks vs the XD and was a better shot with that XD. I also noticed the lighter plastic magazines of that 23 hanging up, unlike the metal ones of the XD. 🤔 I’m not trying to start any S, but I saw what I saw and fortunately for us all hickok45 is a straight up guy.
Well , I got the Xd in 45 and glock 23. Hard to choose witch one to carry day to day. Love them both. Both feel a little different. But both feel good . Some days I just carry both. Tough call if I could only pick one. Both are a lot of fun to shoot . MHO.
XD sights are Metal I like that about it too.
Had not touched a firearm in about 10 years. Decided it was past time to get a firearm for the house and went to the shop. He knew I wanted something 9mm or bigger and small enough to conceivable be able to pocket carry in a large pocket (cargo pants). Merchant showed me a Kahr, a couple Taurus, a glock, maybe a fifth one, all in .40 or .45. I handled them and the Springfield XDm .40 just FELT better in my hand, so I bought it. Put about 100 rounds down range at a paper target of a bad guy (that mullet dude with the revolver LOL!), mostly at 15 yds, but a bit at 3yds and 7 or 10.
I wouldn't say I was getting good grouping per se, but out of those 100 rounds only about 10 didn't hit the dude in the general vicinity I was shooting.
So for all that is worth, that is how "good" the springfield is: a total amateur (maybe have shot 1000 rds in various firearms over my whole lifetime) but always seem to have been a decent shot, had not touched a gun for 10 years, picked up an XD and used it effectively.
Maybe it would've worked out exactly the same had I chosen to shoot the Kahr or the Glock or any of the other ones.
Xdm is over priced garbage I woulda just bought a standard Xd if I was in your shoes
Your opinion is garbage lol Anyone including pro shooters will tell you an XDM is one of the top guns on the market right now. garbage? gtfo lol
Everyone on the internet is an expert.
@huguenot67 , I'm assuming everybody will get that little bit at the beginning. Those who don't will certainly wonder what the heck I'm doing. I just couldn't resist.
@AirsoftVeteran96 , I think either is fine. Nothing wrong with night sights; I usually don't go out of my way to find them.
Great video like usual ! Make it look easy , but safety is your only concern . That XD performed great . Purchased my first Glock 23 Gen 3 not disappointed at all. Can you please do a review on that 31 round magazine on it's performance thanks in advance.
XD trigger it is better stock. XD has better features. Loaded and cocked etc. Good for low light situations. XD all day every day.
@str8marvelous
Both are good. The GLOCK may be more expensive up front if you are only considering new. GLOCKs, however, are common police service weapons, and many are being exchanged for the newer model right now, so there are many fantastic used GLOCKs with night sights available right now for less than $400.
hickok45, the only man who snipes with a pistol.
@frankgon4 , I have not fired it. The only Walther I've fired was a PPK in .380 I had back in the '80s.
I can’t lie Hickok maybe cause you have large hands but maybe not cause despite the XD-40 looking & having more steel on the slide than the Glock it’s just looks so much better & nicer when in the hands than the puny but blocky glock but glocks never been popular for their looks obviously. Just gotta say that XD-40 looks badass & like a real gun in the hands next to the glock
@skindresser , I get a clearer sight picture with my left eye, so I use it with a handgun.
XD's are great. Own a carry a subcompact XD9 regularly with my other carry pistols. But in this platform, G23 all the way! Lighter, better trigger, more capacity, etc.
@johnnytastetest , No, I meant the Blumenthal allusion, where he "misspoke" about his "Vietnam service."
@hickok45 Yup, not that I'm an expert in any way but pulling the slide back is universal while slide releases can have different feels and locations on alot of guns so just use what will work and will work on every auto and that is pulling the slide back and off you go.
another great vid hickok
Glock 23 hands down !!!
LOL, "I misspoke." love the Blumenthal reference.
I've learned that if you plan to sell or trade a gun, never shoot it right beforehand. Ten to one you will shoot it great and it will make it darn near impossible to get rid of ;).
Great video, as usual! Your comparison of the XD and the Glock has been great! You show and talk about the details of each gun AND you shoot them. Have you ever had the chance to shoot a HK P2000? If you ever do have the opportunity, I would like to see you compare the P2000 to the G23.
I feel like Glock people have just shot so many Glocks that they are so used to the trigger and feel nothing else works anymore. As someone who came from hammer fire and tried both side by side I have to say in my opinion Springfields are far superior especially with the grip and trigger. However, if you are used to Glocks there's nothing wrong with that. Both are fantastic pistols.
Bought one XD then another and another. The XD is just a better shooter in my opinion. And it feels better in the hands.
@str8marvelous
Regarding the .40 vs 9mm, they are both fantastic and will get the job done. If you are just getting into guns, I would choose one or the other, and buy them in bulk.
.40 cal is a bit more expensive up front, and is a larger round, as it is based on the 10mm. This means that pistols of the same size will hold more 9mm than .40. For example, the GLOCK 19 (9mm) holds 15+1, but the GLOCK 23 (.40) holders 13+1.
Hickok....love you man! I really enjoyed this video from a year or two back...but please keep that XDM 5.25 in 9mm....the steel targets rang like an orchestra when you were running that gun. I like my Glocks too but until you shoot a G34 I will always enjoy the Springfield XDM 5.25 as my fav of your vids...peace
This is why I'll probably stick to only one gun for the most part, I'll have others for fun, but I think I'll regulate 90% of all shooting to that one gun. I don't think I could become proficient with both the XD and the Glock at the same time, so I guess I'll just pick one and stick with it.
It's amazing how some people misspeak about things and acknowledge the mistake and some other people conveniently forget to come clean!!
@nufaction , He's using the Galco Royal Guard IWB. :-)
you love the XD.....you love the XD....you love the XD!!!! : ) I knew you would convert over to the XD side...even if you won't admit it yourself! lol, j/k Awesome video as usually!!
My only complaint with the xd is the trigger. I prefer the Glock trigger by a lot. The reset is shorter and so is the take up and it’s not as mushy
Dry firing is great practice for muscle memory. If it's center fire you are usually good. Rim fire is a no go for dry firing.
My 2 favorite pistols , love the Sig and MPs too
@500SWMAGOPERATOR , Depends on the hardness of the steel.
Xd is built better, little better grip, better barrel, better point of aim, they’re more accurate. Glock was always one up on ammo! Now there is the new xdm elite 9mm with a standard 22 round mag. Both excellent guns but in my opinion Springfield armory is now on another level
Looks like your better with the XD Witch I like better anyway ;)
He keeps the Glock beside his bed. That says everything.
I keep the XD Besid my bed!
And I keep a G23 beside my bed, and a rifle next to that.
O Ya I'm not to indulge the home security I have lol
I thought the Glock 23 was a 40 caliber and the Glock 21 was the 45???
John Work I feel ya there. I didn't want to go into detail, myself. You are correct, though, the 23 is .40 and the 21 is .45. Did I say something that sounded, otherwise?
I take it you like your XD? I hear good things about them.
You should watch some XD torture test videos, they are virtually indestructible. I have fired thousands of rounds through my XD9 with not a single issue, goes boom every time. I absolutely love it, best gun I have ever owned.
I have the XD-45 and have shot well into two thousand rounds through it with only one stovepipe, which as you know, is most often the cause of a bad grip by the shooter and not the gun. I have had a misfire, but it wasn't due to a weak hammer strike, just a bad primer.
Just got the Glock 23 and can't wait to shoot it. Damn you job...... damn you responsibilities! grrrrr
I have both Glock's and XD's and I want to love the Glock... but i can't.
The XD just shoots better. After my friends, that do not shoot much and have no bias to brand, and i shoots both at the range, they all like the XD better then the glock.
The safety's at the heal, trigger, pin in fire mode and beveled chambered indicator are great.
Hickok 45 does not notice that he didn't chamber a round on the 23, but the XD has a raised bevel to indicate a chambered round. Hickok did look the most flustered i have seen and did not do the 23 justice but the bugs are out and it was hot when you shoot that XD pretty good...
pretty stupid reason to not like a glock. As for shooting different that's the operator. 99% of people just don't like glock because they're so popular
Don't forget because they're ugly, don't evolve, ergonomics, to dependant on aftermarket parts, glocktard fanboys,
I just bought, an xd . They have a promo 4 extra mags,a holster, and a pouch. I held both the glock and xd. Both felt the same to me. xd had the better sights. The gun guy recommended I get the xd even though I was thinking about the glock. He could have made more money on me but didn't. I am assuming n.he wants to me to come back by giving me a deal and a reliable gun. Since both have the lifetime warranty, glock doesnt come with extra perks I decided to get the xd. Plus it was 80 dollars cheaper
Vinh Tran honestly it's because we get points towards free SA guns if we sell them. But rest assured we sell them also because they are brilliant, reliable, fun to shoot guns!
Glock never offers spiffs or promotions
@xstretcherjockeyx , I think I'm wearing my Galco Royal Guard. I'd have to watch the video again. It's eight that or my Fobus paddle.
Being from "the nutmeg state" myself, your hysterical joke in reference to Attorney General Blumenthal's "misspoken" statement was not lost on me. Well done - I laughed out loud. And done so subtlety that it didn't detract from your excellent video one iota. I do appreciate your honest reviews. And the fact that you interlay them with humor make them a joy to watch. Life IS good. :->
own a xd service 45acp shot several glocks both are great cant go wrong with either.
The XD is a sexy gun!
I like the length of the videos. It makes me feel as if I am getting a private lesson. I just purchased me XD Service model yesterday and unfortunately the shortage in ammo is keeping me from shooting it.... this is as close as I can get until Monday evening...lol
@hickok45, I Would Just like to second what vaderx360 said. It is refreshing to see someone who may have a preference for one particular gun type who does not feel the need to bash the other. Especially with types that are as similar as these two. I say, when two gun types are this close, differences (pro/cons) aside, pick the one that works best for you and be happy. Let whatever works best for you determine which is "better".
@yclowa I appreciate Hickok's knowledge and information- That's why I enjoy his show! Besides if you want to watch shooting - it's only for entertainment and for envy's sake! As the man says, "the guns are accurate in themselves!" so why watch him shoot? You can't measure the recoil or observe any difference for what it's worth. Now I would agree - His shooting is important but when comparing guns its about the information. Go to one of his "other" video's if you wanna watch more shooting!
I prefer the Springfield over the Glock and I think the factory Springfield sites are much better the gun itself seems to be made higher quality then a Glock but is also a little more expensive and it sure did seem he was shooting much better with the XD
@jacobninja25 , guess that's what lures some folks of questionable character to lie about such things. It IS impressive when someone serves our country, but it's quite "unimpressive" when someone lies about it. I can just about imagine how real veterans react when they see people get caught lying about their imaginary service.
love your video's even the old ones like this, but kinda sad that you're a Glockist and everything else is 2nd place, this is 100% my opinion and i'm no pro, but i think the XD is better than than the glock and many pro's agree, and i hate that the XD takes a back door, but the 2 are both made in south eastern Europe, and the XD unlike the glock was made during a war period where they had to work, where it was someone's life, and that's why i like the XD
It cost $450 in California glocks are retail prices everywhere. Here I seen a g 26 for $650
I really like and appreciate your videos. I must say I love my XD. I had a glock 17 and hated it. I think its just personal preference. Keep the videos coming.
The "i miss spoke line"... is awesome!!!!
