Chordplay - The Chords Of Jerry Reed
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 ноя 2023
- Hey everybody! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Jerry Reed. I created a Three-For-All lesson surrounding Jerry Reed earlier this year and since that time I've had a ton of requests/feedback to feature more of his music, which made me very happy to see, as he's been a musical influence on me since I was a little kid and before I even played guitar - so let's dive in!
Jerry's quirky guitar style and music are very difficult to perform, and while this lesson features an assortment of "easy" Jerry Reed moments, there's nothing in this lesson that's actually easy to play - it's all hard, but most of the material featured here is easier to play some of his scarier/crazier stuff.
This lesson includes chord-based sections from songs such as Navy Blues, Mule Skinner Blues, Tennessee Stud, Blues Land, If I Promise, and Swingin' '69 - to name a few.
Needless to say, if you're a fan of Jerry Reed's music, a fan of classic country guitar playing from the 1960s/1970s, a player searching for some slick chord moves to stick in their bag of ideas, a player wanting to explore fingerstyle playing further, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Reed was that killer combo of natural talent and dedicated practicing. He called himself a “guitar thinker.” He had the casual vibe of a guy around a campfire, while being one of the best guitarists who ever lived. The Guitar Man!
well said!
Jerry was much like Glen Campbell in that they were multi-talanted. Comedy, showmanship, outstanding musicianship. He made highly complex guitar playing look easy.
Great vid Brah.
I was living in Nashville early 2000's and met him in a mom and pop music store. I knew he was an actor but had no idea he could play and when he picked up that guitar in front of me.... H.O.L.Y...S.H.I.T! I will never forget that day. Glad I got to shake his hand.
Jerry & Chet were like Cacophony of the country scene they both shredded!
... And Roy Clark!
@@TaoGroovewitchDefinitely Roy Clark & throw Campbell in there too
@@uncleremus5046 campbell
I saw Cacophony at Trader Joe's in Pensacola in the '80s...scary good!
I heard that Jerry Reed was chet Atkins' son in-law...
The story about Elvis recording Jerry`s Guitar man song is freaking hilarious!
Story goes, Elvis is at the studio with a bunch of studio musicians trying to record the song but the guitar players aren't making it happen.
So after several frustrating hours, Elvis tells his crew to get a hold of Jerry. But they can't, because he is out fishing. Eventually they do, and Jerry walks into the studio still wearing his dirty fishing clothes. Upon seeing Elvis up close, Jerry says, God, you really are a beautiful man. haha Elvis visibly frustrated says, Thank you. Now can you please play this guitar part so we can finish this song. Gerry chuckled and said, I knew you would eventually call me.
So before they got started, one of the Memphis mafia crew asked Jerry to step into the other room and handed Jerry a contract to sign. If I recall, it read that Gerry was signing over 50% of the song writing credit/royalties to Elvis. Jerry flat out refused to sign it and started to walk out and the mafia guy said, are you crazy? Elvis wants to record your song, Do you know what it means to have Elvis record your song? Do you realize how pissed he is going to be if you refuse to sign this? Every song Elvis records the songwriters sign this same contract. Gerry said, Lets put it this way, I just saw how pissed he already is in there that those guys can't get my song right, how pissed do you think he is going to be with you when the only guy that can do it, just walked out the door?
He caved. After Gerry signed the new contract he laughed and said, I eventually knew you would come and get me.
They asked, how did you know? Because, The guitar parts have all kinds of alternate tunings and fingerings, I knew they would never be able to figure it out and get it right.
Love it when a metalhead plays some badass guitar from a country legend. You really bring it all Dave. Thanks
Definitely!
Very beautiful
One of the greatest that ever lived. He comes across as this ol' country boy, but his songs were so intricate and mind blowing. He was just on another level beyond us mere mortals. I've often wondered how he learned to play and came to be such a virtuoso. Did he go to a fancy music school or was he self-taught? Did he have a mentor or teacher? How did he come up with these weird tunings he often used? I would have loved to just sit down with him and pick his brain, but I feel like he'd have just been evasive and be like, "Well son, I don't know. I just kinda do it. Now deal them cards and ante up!"
Jerry Reed was a monster player. I also remember seeing players like Jerry and Chet in the 60's and 70's guesting on country TV shows and my mind was always blown at how good they were. These guys were guitar geniuses.
Thank You for featuring Jerry Reed. I was born in 1962 and remember first watching him on Television, such a great player.
His picking is phenomenal.
Jerry was a great guitarist. And he used many alternate tunings…too many to even remember. And he was funny! Just enjoyed living life! Thanks for this video!
You’re a great guitar player. Thanks for the episode.
Jerry Reed was an unbelievable and legendary guitar player.
Chet Atkins regarded Jerry Reed as a “certified guitar player”. That’s about the highest compliment a guitar player can receive.
I remember hearing Amos Moses on the radio back in the 60's. I've been a fan ever since. He sounded like no body else. His playing, song writing and lyrics... his own. He never received the accolade's he deserved. Thank you for this. Love your channel.
Jerry Reed, country jazz funk. No one else like him, before or since. Have to stop whenever I see a video on him.
Im an advanced guitarist myself but i always learn the coolest new things watching your chanel, thanks dude!
I genuinely appreciate that last one my friend can't thank you enough for breaking that down for us🤘🤘✌️🖖
Jerry Reed was an amazing guitar player and a more amazing entertainer. I love your commentary on his style. I'll look forward to more of your work of explaining and demonstrating how to capture some of his sound. His humor flowed out of confidence of his mastery of strings. Sound was his people magnet.
Cool lesson! I love your way of showcasing Jerry's beautiful music👍
You sir are a natural teacher, just fantastic.
Happy to find this too, big Jerry picking fan - Tennessee stud, Son! I’ve been listening and playing (trying ) Chet and Jerry for years
The first album I bought with my own money was the Smokey and the Bandit soundtrack...I still have it!
Now that was a great video! Jerry’s playing is a thing that draws you in and then discourages you at the same time because he is so hard to imitate closely! Nothing like his style (which as you have said is all over the place). He’s actually my favorite guitarist. Been trying to copy for years and I still stop sometimes and think “I can’t believe Jerry thought this stuff up”! Amazing guitarist and the man in this video is great too! You had my full attention at “Jerry Reed”! Great job here!
Definitely one of the best . Glen Campbell as suggestion. Compliments to u sir , i wonder Is there anything u can't play ?
I was exposed to this type of music as a small child & hated every part of it, but I somehow knew that Jerry & a couple others had something special. In hindsight he was one of the coolest guys ever. I have some Guitar Player magazine tabs from early 80s of classic Jerry shred.
Been a fan of Jerry Reed since I heard his version of Guitar Man on the radio in 1990. Found a country music shop that had many Reed albums. Eventually I bought many. Love his finger picking style on the nylon string and with YT see him play on TV. Great performer, writer, singer, actor and picker. I was at work in 2008 when a colleague had told me he died. Was upset for my shift and found out he died of emphysema. But, he left us with much to enjoy. Wish there was a good documentary on him, on his style, life, music and interviews. Nice guitar lesson.
THIS IS DEFINITELY MY KIND OF VIDEO...I AM ALL OVER THE PLACE AS FAR AS MY GUITAR INFLUENCE'S..
YOU DO COVER A WIDE RANGE OF GUITARIST...
I LOVE.. ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR VIDEO'S..
Jerry Reed was a badass I love him
I'm Eastbound and Down on learning this lesson!
Thank you for this video. I spent my morning learning the first riff in this video. I added a bit of travis picking too it too where I alternate between both D strings for the intro.
Great lesson!
Gosh, just brilliant!! Jerry & Chet on tv was somethin' else. 'Specially when he was young, so dynamic and healthy looking with amazing energy, zeal and humor. Just ablaze with zest and love of life!!
In Europe I think the movie Bandid and his song East Bound And Down put him on the screen. Jerry was an awesome player and entertainer. I don't use the term best or one of the best because it is used inflationary these days and can only be understood as one of my favourite instead. He is a unique character with lots of inspiration quilling out of him. As a musician he was unique as well and you can really hear that he is studying this instrument more than learning what was found out until then. This makes him outstanding. Great video. Will dig into these tricks and chords. Thanks mate.
Jerry Reed was one of the best guitarist of all times in my opinion. Also, he was hilarious!
You never fail to impress me, David! Sweet playing, to say the least.
Back in the 80s i was musically ignorant as much as i hate technology the internet has made me realize how great guys like Jerry and Chet were. I’ve been playing guitar for 50 years and can’t get through one song of his. Savant for sure
Very cool I always try to capture those tones, Jerry was self taught, and he played what i would call Delta Blues with Jazz Ragtime mixed in.
It may take another 50 years, but one day Jerry will get his recognition as a guitar god
WOW! Thanks for reminding about Jerry Reed the LEGEND!
Dude Jerry is a monster. Hands down my favorite country player in history. I brought his version of “in the pines” to my guitar mentor who had a masters in music, and stumped him. He said it would take hours just to figure it out for him and that’s when’s I knew he was impressive.
The opening riff is from Tennessee Stud.
Another great lesson
Awesome stuff, love these well crafted riffs!
Thanks for your video 😎 TCB 😎 full lesson would be worth gold exactly the 3 songs good job 😎 TCB 😎
Nice one, Dave...a true master of the instrument too often sorely overlooked.
A fine lesson...enjoyed the hell out of it! I grew up watching and admiring Jerry Reed play.
Wow. This lesson blew my mind, thank you Mr Brewster
My man, I just discovered your channel this evening. I have to say I compliment you. You are a fantastic player not to mention that Jerry Reed is one of the most underrated incredible guitar players never got the recognition he deserves I absolutely love him and thank you for sharing his legacy, I will keep on top of your channel and hopefully more of Jerry Reed stuff. Thank you very much.
😍😎😎
Another Amazing Guitar Legend, covered on Late Night Lessons! Thanks, David! Fantastic Channel!
Cool licks and cool that you learned and can show/explain them. A+
Love it! Maybe keep Tony Rice in the back of your mind, he was much more than just bluesgrass. Cold on the shoulder is phenomenal
Tony once said Jerry Reed was one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived.
Wow, this is all new to me. Such cool stuff!
Again just when I think you hit the pinnacle of your videos. You hit us with this. I like my dad was a huge Jerry Reed fan as well as Roy Clark. Thanks for this one.
That was cool. I grew up listening to Jerry and many other talented pickers from back in the day. Roy Clark is one of my favorites.
Wow, talk about an underrated master. Great vid, Dave.
Outstanding. I love it
Hey haven't tuned into you in a while but i really liked the lesson and history, very intriguing. Thank you.!!!!
Absolutely love Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, SRV, Jim Croce, all the greats. They don't make music like they used to. This new age stuff just don't have the umph to it you know. You have definitely earned a new sub and a like. Keep it up!!!
Good teacher. Great guitar. I will nerver play like you but you are a pleasure to watch and listen to.
Wow. !!! Grew up watching Jerry. Played state fair s. He was a fusion. Master. Before fusion
Jerry was a mind-blowing guitarist. Just an incredible player and made it look easy. Thx Dave do one on Roy Clark soon. Keep up the great work
Amazing stuff
Just looking at all the comments. I believe you hit a home run with this Dave.
Great post! This style is almost lost. Nice work keeping it alive! Great playing!
Great player, really cool lesson. Thanks David.😊
Today is gonna be a Jerry Reed expedition day ❤thank you
Thank you for this episode Dave. Professional and so well done. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Jerry Reed was one of a kind!
First time that you’ve made my algorithm.
Absolutely stellar interpretation of JR’s playing.
Love Blues-land!
Great stuff
Thanks alot
Love the artwork
Nice Guitar shop Jeff Beck work!
Man this is a great presentation of some of best of one of the baddest.
A lot of people overlook Jerry Reed and Prince, because they were "larger than life" cats, but man, them boys could tear up some git box.
Perfect timing! Just heard a great cover of Eastbound and Down at College Town at FSU in Tallahassee during a Friday night pregame for FSU vs Miami. So good!!! Like you I was introduced to Jerry at a young age seeing Smokey &the Bandit in the theater and loved him ever since. Thank you!
Love JERRY REED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You mention all of his studio albums, but not that many have been re-released, and they arent that easy to find on the internet UNFORTUNATELY.
Great stuff!
Jerry was amazing,,,,so are U....seriously great picker..
Great job very advanced presentation here. I play a few of his songs in a country band and my fingers get tied up in a knot every time. Scary
That made my night. Nice stuff dude.
Reed was great, thanks for the video mate
The claw once you master it it opens up so many doors but boy is it hard 😬
Thanks for this. I will have to give them a try.
Awesome. Thanks 🎉🎉🎉
Great choices Sir awesome content I have been a Jerry fan as long as can remember🤘🤘✌️🖖
Great stuff like always. Hope you’re doing well. Thank you
wow! Excellent and much appreciated!
More Jerry! Awesome
The first time I ever watched him play it was “Eastbound and Down” and he’s sitting, no shoes and keeping the timing by swaying/rocking left foot to right. I thought that was so dope as I prefer playin’ sitting, even when live but could never pull it off and don’t think one could unless they’re that damn good. It’s here on YT, it was orgisnlly on some snow.. maybe Hee Haw?
That’s great, love Jerry Reed, love your technique, and how you explain, you play great!
Muy bueno maestro 😄👍
Awesome stuff. I really dig your enthusiasm and way to explain this. As someone who has some issues with following how things are done, this is exceptionally well to follow and really inspiring. I also just really like the material you choose to show. Thank you!
extra special thank you for this one dave!
Awesome!!
Love me some Jerry Reed
LOVE Jerry's version of Muleskinner Blues! The Guitar Man, from Atlanta G A!! Awesome lesson, Dave!
Cool as always... Thanks
Great video! You could have easily made this video 4 or 5 or more times longer. 😀 one of Jerry's first instrumentals that I heard was the Claw. Instantly fell in love with his music and playing. Nice to see that he is still remembered. Thank you.
Love to see Jerry Reed get (some more) love!
A terrific episode!
Awesome lesson!!!!
Your content is Amazing. Thank you SO much for explaining thing so succinctly! Wow!!
I'm thrilled I stumbled on your channel and this lesson in particular.
New to the channel. Your Drop D sounds so sick with the acoustic. I love Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins
Love drop D on an acoustic. Bout to get a D-15 for open tuning so when playin’ live I can play my SWDGT in drop D or tune it back to standard.
Your channel is so amazing - and your cast a wide, amazing net, but I think this may be my favorite (well, for now. . .). Jerry was amazing at everything - and was a completely mind blowing guitarist!
