I loved Molly Hatchet in high school. They brought a harder edge to Southern Rock and I got to see them live in Houston in early 80s. Duane Roland and Dave Hlubek had some killer guitar riffs and harmonies together. Glad to see this episode.

I grew up in the early 70's in Jacksonville Florida as a kid and swam in the gator infested river of cedar river. What dumb asses we were back then. Thank you, brother, for bringing this music back to life. Skynyrd, Hatchet, Blackfoot, Almond Brothers, CCR, there is nothing better period! Ozzy, Dokken, Maiden, Priest, Metalica, etc. etc.! Nothing compares to southern rock in my opinion!

Dude...i am 56 yrs old and made the mistake of teaching myself how to play guitar.i e been playing for 35 years and am AVERAGE on my BEST days. Thank you for explaining some of my favorite tunes from some of my favorite bands in a way i can grasp.
They were GREAT in their prime, but word to the wise (a cautionary tale): Watch what your "relationship" is with ALCOHOL. Molly Hatchet is a prime example of undisciplined drinking will ruin you. They weren't casualties of the lifestyle during their heyday, it was the years out of the limelight that took their toll. For most, there comes a point when it's time to walk away from drinking for good. The human body is not meant to withstand unlimited consumption when you're young, then (even if you've tapered it down) still drinking to excess in your late 40's/early 50's - it will snowball and kill you.
Seems like the desire to drink alcohol 🍷 🍸 dissipated for me, same for cigars, pipe smoking, and coffee; just didn't like it anymore, nothing I did or needed to accomplish. Sort of a blessing right ✅️

Always wondered why I never see Molly Hatchet guitar lessons on line, or anything about them so this is great. Great rock tunes. Drove many trips up I-75 to their music in the late 70's.

Molly hatchet is a simple southern groove that isnt always that simple. Their arrangements can be very specific and troubling at times. Songs every guitarist should master. We played dreams every weekend for 5 years in lots of venues, and they ate it up. I was against putting it on the set list. Oh how i was wrong. Not that i didnt like it, but your job is to get the dance floor full, it did, in the first 4 bars. Oh the flirting. Pun intended. Rock on David, ya never disappoint

Saw Molly Hatchet at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill, NC in the early 80s with Nantucket opening. Someone threw a roll of toilet paper on top of the scoreboard between shows and then lit it on fire. I don't think they even emptied the arena. They just lowered the scoreboard and put it out. Those were the days! Thanks for the great lesson David. Southern Rock is one of my favorite genres. I'd love to see you do a deep dive on the solo style of Hughie Thomasson from the Outlaws. What a unique player, with all those pedal steel bends intertwined with blues licks. Keep 'em coming!

I was lucky enough to see them in 1980 at the Summer Blowout L.A. Coliseum. They were the best that day over Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick ,Journey, the Baby's and Russia. Well, maybe not Sabbath but they certainly got most people's attention just straight up and hard rock boogie beats with 3 guitar players. My first concert I was 17. Great times ~

Great video:) as a teenager I cut my teeth on some Hatchet. Me and my buddy really got into dissecting all those harmony leads they did. It helped me understand how harmony works. I sing a lot of harmony in the band I’m in now. I might not be able to do that it if wasn’t for Molly Hatchet. My Brother can do a mean Danny Joe Brown lol

When you do Blackfoot please do a deep dive into the solos for highway song, there are a few licks in there that are pretty awesome -definitely influenced by free bird but super cool stuff! Not sure if I have ever posted a comment for you but I have just really enjoyed all of your videos and you’re laid-back style and the fact that you always say “something like that” when you play the lick note for note! It is such a crack up, good to see you let loose a little bit in this video as well! Thanks again.
Flirting with disaster was legit the first song I ever loved. I was a kid and I had some nascar game on the ps1, I believe it was nascar ‘98 and it was the only song in the game!
True that I prefer their version much over the Allman Brothers, no disrespect to the original group but sometimes another band grabs your song and turbo charges it!
Back in the mid 80`s my younger brother was stopping into tattoo parlors (wasn't many in those days) and he went into a small parlor in Deep River, CT. The artist that did the Molly Hatchet album covers was in there. The owner of the shop said, today is your lucky day. The artist that did the Molly Hatchet album covers is touring the country as a guest tattoo artist and we are lucky to have him today. Go say hello to him. He did a killer/ beautiful/badass knight in armor, head dress and axe on a horse. My younger brother was a huge bodybuilder with huge arms and the tat ran the whole length of his inner forearm.

Love the chordplay but the refrain on flirtin' is the burner part and all of Hrubars solos were so melodic and fun so wish I could live down in the"Gator Country" where the" wine and the women are free" such a kickass time to be alive and out playing this type of music, oops there goes a beer bottle someone's brawlin' 👍 LoL

Bounty Hunter! Yes! I don't play in a band but play along with my iPod. This is on my practice list. Glad to see I'm playing the intro right at least! lol Going to Enjoy this lesson! I saw them with Jimmy Farrar in March 81 and again inf June 85 when Danny Joe Brown had rejoined the group. The 1985 show was a Killer high energy show in a mid sized venue. A couple weeks later people who missed the show asked me about it saying people were STILL talking about how good it was.
Hey mate, a heartfelt Thank You for this upload. Even almost 55 years later those southern songs ( La Grange, Freebird, Flirtin' etc ) still do not take any prisoners, they just go. Loved your format, always interesting to hear factoids on somewhat lesser known bands. The thing I'm having the most trouble with is finding an amp that does those almost clean, power-distorted tones. For Freebird for example everyone raves about them having used Peavey Mace. But when I borrow a Peavey Mace and play the song through it, it just isn't 100% right. It's too muffled, too distorted, it's either too much gain or the gain is correct, but then the amp lacks so much fullness and sounds brittle. If someone says 'do some Slash' and I'm running through a JCM800 with a TS808, contrarily I have the feeling that I can pretty much exactly nail the tone. But if I do the same thing for Freebird or a ZZ Top song, my tone always seems to be off by the tiniest or margins. So yeah, those guys back then were wizards.
This is Great !! '82 and i'm jamming with a friend, working up Flirtin' With Disaster. Had it. Years later a band i played in a year or so later reunites. This is '05. Practiced every weekend and one was when the news broke that Danny Joe Brown passed away. We're all bummed and i quietly play the descending prechorus triads for Flirtin'... 'What's that ???" Became part of the set, me first. Nailed it.
Thanks so much for doing this, I've been a huge fan since the beginning. I was fortunate to see the original line up 5 or 6 times. I'm a huge Dave Hlubek fan, he was so much fun to watch live. He also had the coolest unique guitar, an Explorer body with a reverse Firebird headstock (I'm a Firebird nut). A holy grail guitar for me!
As a kid, Frank Frazetta's amazing art on their album covers kind of backfired for me, because I was expecting some serious 70s Sabbathy Orc Metal. My dad warned me that it wasn't what I was expecting. I eventually grew to love Southern Rock, but I wasn't too familiar with it, at the time.
R I P to all the original members of Molly Hatchet, up in that great big jam room ina sky! They were one band I always caught live on tour. I believe Def Lep opened up for them on their first US tour. Great band, great songs, great memories.

Love the chordplay but the refrain on flirtin' is the burner part and all of Hrubars solos were so melodic and fun so wish I could live down in the"Gator Country" where the" wine and the women are free" such a kickass time to be alive and out playing this type of music, oops there goes a beer bottle someone's brawlin' 👍 LoL

I saw them with Jimmy Farrar in March 81 and again inf June 85 when Danny Joe Brown had rejoined the group.
The 1985 show was a Killer high energy show in a mid sized venue. A couple weeks later people who missed the show asked me about it saying people were STILL talking about how good it was.
great band. i always have them playing when i'm out in the garden cutting the grass or the hedge. mh are my go to gardening music.
Hey mate, a heartfelt Thank You for this upload. Even almost 55 years later those southern songs ( La Grange, Freebird, Flirtin' etc ) still do not take any prisoners, they just go.
Loved your format, always interesting to hear factoids on somewhat lesser known bands.
The thing I'm having the most trouble with is finding an amp that does those almost clean, power-distorted tones. For Freebird for example everyone raves about them having used Peavey Mace. But when I borrow a Peavey Mace and play the song through it, it just isn't 100% right. It's too muffled, too distorted, it's either too much gain or the gain is correct, but then the amp lacks so much fullness and sounds brittle.
If someone says 'do some Slash' and I'm running through a JCM800 with a TS808, contrarily I have the feeling that I can pretty much exactly nail the tone. But if I do the same thing for Freebird or a ZZ Top song, my tone always seems to be off by the tiniest or margins.
So yeah, those guys back then were wizards.

Years later a band i played in a year or so later reunites. This is '05.
Practiced every weekend and one was when the news broke that Danny Joe Brown passed away.
We're all bummed and i quietly play the descending prechorus triads for Flirtin'...
'What's that ???"

Thanks so much for doing this, I've been a huge fan since the beginning. I was fortunate to see the original line up 5 or 6 times. I'm a huge Dave Hlubek fan, he was so much fun to watch live. He also had the coolest unique guitar, an Explorer body with a reverse Firebird headstock (I'm a Firebird nut). A holy grail guitar for me!

As a kid, Frank Frazetta's amazing art on their album covers kind of backfired for me, because I was expecting some serious 70s Sabbathy Orc Metal. My dad warned me that it wasn't what I was expecting.
I eventually grew to love Southern Rock, but I wasn't too familiar with it, at the time.
