My advice for any guitar player is to spend a month or two learning your favorite disco and funk songs and you will never struggle with difficult rhythms again
Funk guitar and trash metal for a right hand workout and Jazz and Latin music for left hand. Should be able to play almost anything. Throw in some Hendrix and Van Halen too!
What a brilliant lesson. Been playing a lot of years & been in cover bands (as a rhythm guitarist) but have recently lost my love of playing...this lesson just reignited the fire....thankyou
I’m excited to hear that Paul! We all have our ups and downs with this instrument we have been blessed with. It sounds like we are both now in the excited stage of playing!!!😎 Let’s keep rocking and have a great rest of your weekend✌️
I’m getting my just due right NOW. My favorite guitar teacher lays out the rhythm for all my favorite songs and how to do it. This is what happens when you are in alignment with his plan. Oh yeah, thanks Rusty. You got caught up in my prayer of gratitude.
Hey Cathy, I really appreciate your message here! I had a lot of fun making this video. I’m happy that you liked it. Many thanks and enjoy your weekend.❤️
I'm loving this! I played guitar for about 15 years and then just stopped for the last 12 years. I'm now getting back into it and enjoying your videos, I wish you were my teacher!! Thanks for the nice lessons!
I’m glad you’re playing again! I am your teacher. Just RUclips only. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch my lessons.👍
Having gotten something out of this is an understatement Rusty. I got a ton out of this. Mostly how to connect (match) the scale shape to the current chord shape. Keep up the great work educating us on real guitar playing. Love the Gilmour stuff, always have ever since I was 17 and wasn’t yet playing. I loved those chord tones and triads. You and I play rhythm alike.
I’m really glad to hear that! It’s exciting making new connections on the fretboard! Thanks so much for all your support and I hope you have a great week ahead🙏
Love the sound you get, i have no ambition for getting there as i don't care to play through an amp. Rhythm on the other hand is my ultimate major goal. I would be completely satisfied if I got to be a solid rhythm player. Thank you for everything you do for the community of guitar players! BEST AND PEACE
The clarity of your explanations and your advice are most worthwhile assets. There is much to learn in your tutorialsand a plethora of details to be practised and remembered. You are helping a host of musicians.
As guitarists we probably spend 75%-80% of our time playing so a lesson like this is so important but often overlooked. Thanks for this video it was a great lesson. Love the Doobie Bros.

We need more of this because all I’ve seen is how play solos and lead and shred. At least we need to know how to be an excellent rhythm player. I love rhythm guitar more than playing lead.
You are right! Not as many rhythm guitar lessons out there. But I definitely will be doing more on my channel! I had fun making this video, so I know other players enjoyed it also. Thanks for checking out the video.👍
It took years for me to understand that the bass and rhythm are so important to a song as a whole and to the sound of the lead. A solo is a flourish, rhythm is the song!
Lukather said that he played more rhythm guitar than lead on a lot of records. I've played with so many guitarists who don't have a clue about how to play rhythm guitar. Excellent lesson Rusty. I appreciate the way you tie important techniques back to popular tunes. It helps me remember specific chord and note combinations and keeps me inspired to apply them wherever they sound good! Thanks brother.
It is a fun way to learn these concepts. Thanks so much, Pat! I like how you said inspired! It’s a lot easier to learn if we are inspired! Thanks so much, brother.😎
Fantastic Rusty! Evene when I play it down at slow motion 25% I still can not immitate it yet. But I will keep in trying. I will not give up. I believe it will be extremely useful to developm my rhythm. Cheers from Indonesia.
Thank you, Mustafa! I hope you can get it down because it will help you with other types of rhythm also. Keep working at it! Have a great Sunday my friend.🙏
Very helpful the way you show how the strumming and hammering is done. I have to stop singing in my head and just focus on the exercise. Gets me too excited I’d have the tendency to get carried away and once again put more weight on the singing. But love noticing the good book by the lamp. I’m in a good place.
I feel your pain. I got this book years ago by David Mead( I think) on rhythm and counting. Make sure you have something to slow stuff down. Look up tab with audio of any parts interesting rhythmically
I think that rhythm is just a feeling. When I first started, I never understood rhythm and never thought that I would get it. However, over time and as you listen and play music my hand started to follow the music as well. It's like when you sway you body or head to a song. I am not great at guitar but I feel it now.
It was hard for me as a beginner many decades ago, but a friend showed me a trick of practicing the right hand percussive strumming while just sitting around watching tv with the guitar unplugged. You don’t even have to be playing anything. Just mute the strings with your with your fretting hand and practice with the right hand. Learning to palm mute is very important also. Then work on left hand muting.
Dadgum, Rusty! You're hot agin today! I tell ya, you just keep outdoing yourself with these lessons. Nice to see a rhythm video rysty, loved it...for a while i thougt u were stuck in minor penta, just as i am haha, just joking🤓 thanks for all the lessons, from a drunk swede❤
I’ve been playing guitar for a long time, & I already know everything in this lesson. BUT, I’m glad I found it. It’s so good to be reminded about things that make you a rock solid band member and ask yourself, “Am I still doing these things? Have I stopped doing things like this? If I have, why have I?” Great lesson.
There’s times I’ll hear someone do something and I’ll go “oh, I do that.” And then I’ll realize that I FORGOT how to do it because I haven’t done that thing in a long time. So frustrating sometimes. You get to working on other things and sometimes something falls by the wayside. Like this lesson. I call this Hendrix-type rhythm playing. I know many do it, but I always associate this kind of playing with Jimi. Thanks for the reminder, Rusty.
Ive been playing about 3 years and struggle to get that effortless rhythm movement of your right hand. Mine still sounds cluncky like my wrist is too stiff! Great lesson that makes me want to work towards that kind of playing.
If you can get that right hand to create a smooth rhythm, you will definitely sound more advanced. Watch closely the players that you really wanna play like. Keep working at it buddy! Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos. Talk to you soon.👍
Hey LP, keep working with that ring finger because that’s the most common way players hammer on and pull off. Good to hear from you! Have a great weekend❤️
What a great lesson and I been out of touch because of health issues and after six yes I just started picking up again and having problems with my hands cuz of a lot of medication. Even though I know this this will come very helpful and I just treated myself to a American Strat that will be coming in today I hope it sounds as good as yours does I'm sure it will. Thank You again
Hey Mark, sorry to hear about your health issues, but that is very exciting about getting that Stratocaster! I know it will sound fantastic! I appreciate your comment and have a great weekend buddy👍
Thanx, this is a great lesson for me as I can also use it as a daily excercise and decent warming up 🙂👍 I would love to see a similar lesson, but with 3 nice "Call & Response" songs to practise to use some riffs between chords strumming 😇
Very interesting, Rusty -- for Listen to the Music, I always used the "C" shape E chord on the 4th and slide up to the barred E on 5. Action has to be suitable though if on acoustic. 🙂 Now I gotta go home and try it up the neck aways.
That way sounds good also Sandy! That hammer on pull off move is not easy for a lot of players. But it’s a great tool for rhythm and lead guitar. Thanks for taking the time to watch my lessons and enjoy your weekend.👍
Ignorance is bliss! I can remember thinking that there were separate guitars for rhythm and lead. It was a mystique. Of course, when my brother in law told me otherwise, I felt pretty foolish!
Love your lessons it is great to learn from a complete player who handles lead and rhythm equally well...Also love seeing the Bible on your table in back in some videos. Good to see we share similar passions...
Hey Mark, thanks for taking the time to watch my lessons! I’m glad you noticed the Bible! I read in my studio every morning. I’m glad to hear that you are a believer Also! Blessings, my brother.🙏
WOWWW Rusty! I really loved this lesson! This kind of lesson lets us improve as rhythming guitar players, sounding much more real and grooving. What lucky we are to have you as our teacher! Keep on rockin bro!
Thanks my friend! I had a blast making this lesson! So I’m glad you had fun with it! And I really do appreciate all your support Rafa! Have a great weekend buddy👍
Hey Rusty, Thanks for another awesome lesson! I really love the Doobie Brothers and this was magic! I quickly shared it with my brother who is also a guitarist. Rock on!
“The Thrill is Gone,” co-written by the late great Rick Darnell, who went on to own and dj WPAK in my beloved Farmville, Virginia. Such a genuine, talented man. Thanks for including it; Rick would’ve been honored…and impressed!
The world is full of lead guitarists, but the rhythm is the thing.
- J. Hendrix
Good one! Well said! Thanks for watching the video✌️
Yep
"Bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks." - Ghandi
Took me 20 years to figure this out.
My advice for any guitar player is to spend a month or two learning your favorite disco and funk songs and you will never struggle with difficult rhythms again
That’s one way to do it 😲
I used to take guitar lessons and chord books lead guitar books don’t really keep you motivated to keep practicing more.
Funk guitar and trash metal for a right hand workout and Jazz and Latin music for left hand. Should be able to play almost anything. Throw in some Hendrix and Van Halen too!
Using a metronome is a must and also learning to count what you’re playing.
And add some Reggae and SKA because that plays on the back beat and that can be quite tricky if you always played on the down beat
This has to be the best rhythm guitar lesson ive seen on YT yet, BRAVO 👏!!
Thanks so much, Ron! I really do appreciate that! Talk to you soon buddy👍

I got hooked by the "Another brick in the wall" part 🙂. Time to practice now! Thanks Rusty, it's so easy to be boring at rythm guitar.
As a guitarist I must say I play more than 75-80% playing 😂
Embellished rhythm guitar is just the best, throw in some riffs every once in a while.
This is a great straightforward lesson. Perfect for a medium level player like me. Thanks much for sharing it.

Thanks for the reminder, Rusty.
great lesson as usual, friend!
Thank you Joel! I appreciate you checking out the lesson. Enjoy your weekend.👍
Great, Thanks
Right on Daniel! Thanks for watching👍
Rusty you are awesome 😊❤
I appreciate that my brother! Good to hear from you and have a great weekend👍
Excellent video Rusty. I have my weekend planned out now, Thanks a lot very helpful.
Thank you Martyn! I’m always happy to help! Have a rockin weekend✌️
Hi Rusty! I am learning that my ring finger is my weak link for hammer ons but I am getting better. Love those bar cords.
Hey LP, keep working with that ring finger because that’s the most common way players hammer on and pull off. Good to hear from you! Have a great weekend❤️
Keep up the great job. You will be proud of yourself and surprised that you’re improving. Do your best. Thx Rusty. You make it look so easy.❤
Another great lesson Rusty, more rhythm lessons please
I thank you for that! Definitely some more rhythm stuff coming up! 👍
What a fantastic video have a good weekend rusty also today is my friends birthday ❤😊
I hope you have a great weekend also and thanks for watching 👍
That guitar is so beautiful man.
Thanks! I love that Guitar! I appreciate you watching the lesson👍
Well done - thanks a lot!
Thanks bro😎
What a great lesson and I been out of touch because of health issues and after six yes I just started picking up again and having problems with my hands cuz of a lot of medication. Even though I know this this will come very helpful and I just treated myself to a American Strat that will be coming in today I hope it sounds as good as yours does I'm sure it will. Thank You again
Hey Mark, sorry to hear about your health issues, but that is very exciting about getting that Stratocaster! I know it will sound fantastic! I appreciate your comment and have a great weekend buddy👍
Thanx, this is a great lesson for me as I can also use it as a daily excercise and decent warming up 🙂👍
I would love to see a similar lesson, but with 3 nice "Call & Response" songs to practise to use some riffs between chords strumming 😇
I’m glad you got some thing from the lesson! Thank you for the comment. Talk to you soon.👍
Thanks!
I appreciate the support of my channel! Thank you Roland!
Very interesting, Rusty -- for Listen to the Music, I always used the "C" shape E chord on the 4th and slide up to the barred E on 5. Action has to be suitable though if on acoustic. 🙂
Now I gotta go home and try it up the neck aways.
You’re not the only one that has thought that! Thanks for checking out the video Larry👍
@@rustysguitar1 You're quite welcome!
Love it
I’m happy to hear that Harold! Thanks a lot brother 😎
Great lesson, you’re a natural. Like the shirt. I subscribed, I’m sure I can learn from you. I’m just a notch or two above a beginner.
Thank you for checking out my lessons, Peter! I appreciate that you subscribed to my channel! Let’s talk soon👍
Really great 🎸, Rusty - I’ll be using the Thrill Is Gone chords! 👍🙏
It’s a classic! I love that groove! Thanks for watching Derek! Later bro 😎
Right, that's it! I just threw away my guitar ...
Please don’t! Grab it out of the garbage now.😂
Cowboy up son
It’s mostly just rhythm, triad shapes and hammer ons. Triads are just a chord missing a few notes
@@ganglestankall triads are chords as well, but not all chords are triads

Right on! It’s a classic! Thanks for checking out the video. Happy Sunday.🙏

“The Thrill is Gone,” co-written by the late great Rick Darnell, who went on to own and dj WPAK in my beloved Farmville, Virginia. Such a genuine, talented man. Thanks for including it; Rick would’ve been honored…and impressed!
Cool story Jason!!! One of the best tunes of all time! Thanks bro 😎
