My advice for any guitar player is to spend a month or two learning your favorite disco and funk songs and you will never struggle with difficult rhythms again
Funk guitar and trash metal for a right hand workout and Jazz and Latin music for left hand. Should be able to play almost anything. Throw in some Hendrix and Van Halen too!

@@rustysguitar1 your a wonderful guitar player. Thanks for the lessons. I really enjoy your lessons and like the style music you teach. Thank. God bless you always brother 🙏❤
As guitarists we probably spend 75%-80% of our time playing so a lesson like this is so important but often overlooked. Thanks for this video it was a great lesson. Love the Doobie Bros.
I’ve been playing guitar for a long time, & I already know everything in this lesson. BUT, I’m glad I found it. It’s so good to be reminded about things that make you a rock solid band member and ask yourself, “Am I still doing these things? Have I stopped doing things like this? If I have, why have I?” Great lesson.
There’s times I’ll hear someone do something and I’ll go “oh, I do that.” And then I’ll realize that I FORGOT how to do it because I haven’t done that thing in a long time. So frustrating sometimes. You get to working on other things and sometimes something falls by the wayside. Like this lesson. I call this Hendrix-type rhythm playing. I know many do it, but I always associate this kind of playing with Jimi. Thanks for the reminder, Rusty.
We need more of this because all I’ve seen is how play solos and lead and shred. At least we need to know how to be an excellent rhythm player. I love rhythm guitar more than playing lead.
You are right! Not as many rhythm guitar lessons out there. But I definitely will be doing more on my channel! I had fun making this video, so I know other players enjoyed it also. Thanks for checking out the video.👍
What a brilliant lesson. Been playing a lot of years & been in cover bands (as a rhythm guitarist) but have recently lost my love of playing...this lesson just reignited the fire....thankyou
I’m excited to hear that Paul! We all have our ups and downs with this instrument we have been blessed with. It sounds like we are both now in the excited stage of playing!!!😎 Let’s keep rocking and have a great rest of your weekend✌️
I’m really glad you found my channel also! I read the Bible every morning in my studio! I really appreciate your support. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks buddy HB✌️
I’m getting my just due right NOW. My favorite guitar teacher lays out the rhythm for all my favorite songs and how to do it. This is what happens when you are in alignment with his plan. Oh yeah, thanks Rusty. You got caught up in my prayer of gratitude.
Hey Cathy, I really appreciate your message here! I had a lot of fun making this video. I’m happy that you liked it. Many thanks and enjoy your weekend.❤️
You’re the real deal Rusty. Your delivery, technique pointers, and excellent graphics are the best on YT. I especially appreciate the graphics indicating the name of the chord and finger placement - it helps me better understand the fretboard AND I can see exactly what the fingering is. Given hand sizes & quirky ways guitarists can finger chords, etc. it can be challenging to see how other teachers are playing the chords - your graphics make it a breeze. Keep up the excellence, Rusty, you are making a profound impact on a whole generation of guitarists (and beyond)!
Awesome lesson. I’ve been working on this way of playing for about 6 months now, so this video is about perfect timing. Just the other day I realized Sultans of Swing can be played this way. It’s a game changer. Love it.
Glad to know it was well received. Here is another idea that would help players with brains like mine. Shoot a second camera angle looking down at the fretboard from the view of the player. It makes it much easier to transfer what is seen down to one’s own fretboard. Otherwise for the player it is like watching someone else play the guitar in a mirror, AND flipped upside down. I’m a visual learner but that double-inversion is a barrier. Eg I zoomed in on your hands and turned my phone upside down (it was on the floor and I rotated it 180 degrees from normal to fix the experience.
Love the sound you get, i have no ambition for getting there as i don't care to play through an amp. Rhythm on the other hand is my ultimate major goal. I would be completely satisfied if I got to be a solid rhythm player. Thank you for everything you do for the community of guitar players! BEST AND PEACE
Having gotten something out of this is an understatement Rusty. I got a ton out of this. Mostly how to connect (match) the scale shape to the current chord shape. Keep up the great work educating us on real guitar playing. Love the Gilmour stuff, always have ever since I was 17 and wasn’t yet playing. I loved those chord tones and triads. You and I play rhythm alike.
I’m really glad to hear that! It’s exciting making new connections on the fretboard! Thanks so much for all your support and I hope you have a great week ahead🙏
One of my biggest blind spots on guitar has been not learning other's songs/pieces, I really enjoy making my own stuff when the guitar is in my hands. I could learn so much, I know, and it's dumb not to check other's work, ...so I really appreciate the breakdown of several tunes in one video. And the incomparable humble style. Another great one Rusty! Thank you for it.
Thanks Rusty. I have never played a solo on stage in my life, but I had a great 42 year career as a Rhythm guitarist. I'm by no means a great player, but i think starting out as a drummer probably helped a lot for my 'feel' - which is probably the only thing that can't be taught. As I progressed, I began throwing in my pinkie finger hammers, which add greatly as long as they aren't overdone. Anyway, I really enjoyed watching you Rusty and it's always great to see and connect with fellow guitarists. New subscriber here. Greetings from Nottingham, England.

Right on Michael! I really appreciate that statement! I had a lot of fun making this video for sure. Not a lot of views yet but it will catch on. Happy Sunday my friend.👍

My advice for any guitar player is to spend a month or two learning your favorite disco and funk songs and you will never struggle with difficult rhythms again
That’s one way to do it 😲
I used to take guitar lessons and chord books lead guitar books don’t really keep you motivated to keep practicing more.
Funk guitar and trash metal for a right hand workout and Jazz and Latin music for left hand. Should be able to play almost anything. Throw in some Hendrix and Van Halen too!
Using a metronome is a must and also learning to count what you’re playing.
And add some Reggae and SKA because that plays on the back beat and that can be quite tricky if you always played on the down beat
