If I were to look at music as a "language" and level as "fluency". I'm probably about an 8-10 year old. Finger picking is my strength. I know music theory, I started with drums, but timing still needs calibration. I know the CAGED but not as fluent as I like to be. I know some but note all the notes names. I can play basic cords on most any song by following the bass line to find the key and go from there. Pick control, scales, and consistency is the things I need to work on most.
@@robertcassell782 That’s a great way to look at it Robert. So basically most of us longtime beginners would be stuck in elementary school for years! But it really sounds like you know what to work on. And I know you will be working into that advance territory soon! Thanks a lot for all your support to my channel Robert👍
Something I read a while ago I found really useful in demystifying music theory. It was something along the lines of "music is what we perform: music theory is simply the language we use to explain to others what we're doing when we perform and how to perform it themselves." "It's in 4/4." "It's in G." "G-major or G-minor?" "It's a 1-4-5" chord progression." "A V7 chord wants to resolve to I." "A minor chord has a flatted 3rd." "A pentatonic scale has no semitones." These are all examples (of varying abstruseness) of music theory - the language of instruction in music. In other words, music theory isn't something you learn _after_ you begin playing. It's the very medium via which you learn to play. 🙂
@@redpaul101 Well said! And we should be learning this stuff as a beginner so as we get to intermediate advanced level, we have a solid foundation. Thanks.👍

Hmm, beginner & intermediate for 46 years! New world record! Began playing in 1978... then pretty much quit as I raised my kids and sold everything. (No time working so much). Now that they are grown, a beginner again! It's like I was in a time warp, and suddenly I buy a guitar again and have access to awesome teachers like you. @16:58 "the older I get the more I have fun playing the instrument I've been blessed with" I second that statement brother ~ Thank you and God bless you
I started at playing 58 years old and practice an hour/2 a day. I love the challenge of knowing all of this, it keeps my brain engaged and the TV off! Nice checklist my man.
I can hear the excitement in your message here. It sounds like you’re having fun playing that guitar! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch my lessons. Enjoy your Sunday.🙏
In my experience as an intermediate, I think so much of moving out of long term beginner is also playing with other guitar players/musicians live in the room. I've learned more by just absorbing from better players than anything else. Listen to the instruments around you, find where you fit in, ask questions, be humble and don't compare yourself to others and be okay with making mistakes so long as you're trying. The technique is just about discipline and practice. Fwiw, I find it helps me to focus on trying to be a little better every day. You don't have to be Picasso to enjoy painting, and you don't have to be Jimmy Page to derive value and meaning from playing the guitar. Thanks for the content. Keep playing, everybody.
Well, said Jared! You’re right jamming with others is fun and certainly helps you musical guitar journey! We just need to take some time and work on things that will help us progress! Thanks for the comment👍
Well, I'm glad I was able to get through that checklist unscathed as an intermediate player. But I still learn from your videos and enjoy watching all of them. For example, seeing little chords (diads and triads) all over the fretboard is golden when playing both lead and rhythm, as well as connecting the two. Thanks, Rusty. These are all great points.
Sounds like you’re moving forward though! It sounds like you’re working on the right things to move toward advance level! Thanks for taking the time to watch my lessons and have a great weekend✌️
For years I've been hitting wrong strings!!!! Problem solved! I practiced the 5 pentatonic positions only on the on the 12 and above frets, for seven days! Amazing! It made my pick travel a lot smaller! Why haven't teachers discovered that? Thanks Rusty! Smaller frets really tightens up your picking and fingering!
Like some of your students I am older. I felt guilty about spending a lot of money and time "trying" to play guitar as if it was some sort of race. What I love about your work is how you teach us to forget all that and listen. I am grateful.
I'm a long time beginner. I started at about 57, I'm 63 now. I was progressing slowly but surely. But the last couple of years have brought some health struggles. Hopefully in a few months I'll be able to take it up again. I've been fascinated by the guitar since the 70's and totally enjoy watching a good guitarist.
You are nearing the 100,000 subs level, Rusty. You really deserve all the success this channel has achieved. It is vital to keep having fun on this guitar journey.
It’s been a slow few months here but definitely coming soon. And it’s exciting because of subscribers like you, Ray! I’m glad we’re going through our Guitar journey together! Later, buddy.👍
I bet that was really helpful, Michael! Having that connection can make these RUclips lessons much more understandable. Thanks so much for checking out my video.👍
At 64, I've been a long-time beginner, since I was 8-9 years old. 😱. That said, I understand a reasonable amount of theory. 😊 I've been a hard-hitting acoustic player forever and spent 10 years playing in a church band. I'm trying to move to electric and, well it's a completely different instrument. My son has a music degree in performance jazz (bass guitar). He can play anything and he makes my guitar sing. He also plays keyboard at a high level. You would think having a professional musician in the house would be a great help. It has helped my theory a lot, but its also intimating. Rusty, I have learnt a lot watching both of your channels, and I have shown some of your videos to my son. Thank you and onwards to 100,000 Subs. 😊 - Rod
Hey Rod, you’re right it is completely different. You are working hard and moving forward. Maybe it seems slow, but I know you are thanks so much for taking the time to watch my videos and supporting my channels. Enjoy the rest of your weekend Rod✌️
I've been trying to learn to play for 3 or 4 years. I know some basic theory, but struggle to really progress with my playing. I've also followed various youtube teachers, and I've come to the conclusion that your channel is the best for me. You are a wonderful teacher and player, and your content is extremely helpful to me. Thank you Sir.
I'm have some attributes of both of your lists, but one of my biggest areas of struggle, which I don't think you mentioned, is being able to hear the chord changes when playing with backing tracks. In order to target notes and be deliberate on where you want to end or start a riff hearing that chord change is critical I would think.
Thanks for the feedback! Many players struggle with hearing the chord changes. Counting the beats and measures is one way to get better at it. But I definitely can break this down more in an upcoming video. Thanks Jay. Talk to you soon.👍
I was worried that was going to be me, but it's not. While I spent a lot of years not really improving and sometimes even regressing due to lack of practice. I have made a lit of progress in recent years. I was in the intermediate phase for a long time. I might be able to consider myself advanced at this point although I feel like there are some fairly basic ideas that I haven't fully incorporated yet. It's hard to judge yourself accurately. I just discovered your channel and I'm impressed with what I've seen so far. Don't be surprised if you see me commenting on older videos.
Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos! Most advanced players only do a handful of things well. And you’re probably in that category. Two block in my brother! Thanks a lot for the feedback.👍
Been playing about 1.5 years, started at age 65. I have improved and am having fun. Your teaching style has helped me. I have found the guitar community supportive, encouraging, patient, and kind. Keep up the good work Rusty.
Hi there Rusty....I'm still definitely a longtime beginner...no question about it! But, I have learned a LOT from you and I'm getting better, little by little. My improvising is much better now than 18 months ago, and my technique is much better too, which opens many doors for me. I'm learning, I'm having fun and enjoying the journey as well. Every day I pick up the instrument, I learn a little more, I get a little better, and I have fun. There's no downside to this :)
I love your attitude toward playing the guitar! You are trying to get a little better every day and having fun along the way! And I can totally agree with that. Always good to hear from you. Keep rockin my brother 😎
Oh yeah, a forever long-time beginner! LOL Lots of great advice in today's lesson, Rusty ~ Hope you & your family & friends have a good Memorial Day weekend!
Excellent topic! One thing I learned over the years is not to be afraid of learning genre that you don't normally listen to. When I was invited to play with different people in different places, i quickly realized i had to learn what they played so I could be included again whenever they played again. I'm just a hack but i do have fun with it 😊
I believe I am a low level intermediate player. I am stretched by your videos, which help me press on. I am 78, took the guitar out of the case 8 years ago, and have played-practiced mostly daily ever since. I play fairly fluently sight reading music I like. I am lazy, and tend to stick with what I already know, but I like your stuff a lot, and have advanced a bit because of your tutorials. Many thanks
THANK YOU, Checked them all on the long very long time guitar player. Totally have it up for a long time but past time to push to get to the intermediate level. No more gear until I earn it.
I think I've crossed the line into intermediate. Use to play acoustic and was progressing quite well. We then were losing our only bass player for all the groups at church. So I bought a bass and became the bass player. Occasionally now I also play electric in one group. I think playing guitar made me a better bass player but now getting back to guitar more, playing bass has made me a better guitar player. Sometimes struggle what to practice to keep moving forward. Appreciate your videos.
Definitely playing other instruments will make you an overall better musician. Sounds like your progressing with all of those instruments. Thanks so much for checking out the video Robert! Catch you later👍
Very good points Rusty!! I think that a problem that prevents us from advancing is the overinformation that exists today on the Internet and the lack of a structured program to advance progressively, we bite here and there and we do not focus and deepen. I think that composing our own riffs/songs/solos etc. also makes a lot of progress. Playing with friends and jamming/improvising also helps a lot. I consider myself an intermediate player but I have so much stuff to learn and improve. Thanks a lot my friend!
Yes, I'm a long time beginner. I too at one time have struggled with everything you mentioned. Now I'm back after I stopped playing for over 25 years. Back to learning basic music theory. Playing, following the chord tones to solo.
I’m glad you’re back at it! And you are working on the stuff that’s going to make you an advance player for sure! Thanks for the comment and enjoy the week ahead Jeff👍
Hi Rusty. I started at a late age because My focus as a youth was erratic, and I wanted to learn correctly as a discipline. RUclips has been a positive influence because I can learn at my own speed and review lessons at my convenience. I bought a pedal that has a looper and drum beats, and this is a valuable tool for timing and rhythmic feel. I play music that does not require lots of speed or endurance, and I enjoy playing scales and patterns to warm up and create flexibility in my fingers. My dad played till he was in his late 80's. Thanks Rusty, I subscribed.
It sounds like you’re having fun with that Guitar! You are working on the right things to progress that’s for sure! Thanks so much for subscribing to my channel and enjoy your Sunday Gene 🙏
I step back and forth over the line of beginner and intermediate. It can be very frustrating when out of practice and can't play like you used to. Your videos have helped me be more an intermediate player. Still working on it. But now the songs I play sound better than before. Progress is a journey, not a destination.
Hi Rusty, thank you for this lesson with many ‘philosophical’ ideas. Yes, do not focus on gear and practise. That’s true! Gear is distraction. I suppose that each person is on their own musical voyage. I am probably intermediate, but I still enjoy videos like this as I always seem to pick up on something new. I wish you and the guitar community a nice weekend! 👍🏻😎☀️
Thank you for your undying support for us long time mediocre players. Unfortunately I am one of those 50 something years players who just can’t seem to get over the hump. At 71 I still try to pick up the guitar everyday if possible. I love playing guitar. I keep asking myself is it time to just hang it up. But in reality I probably never will. Somehow if I keep picking it up and playing it’s going to come to me through osmosis. And like magic I am going to be able to play great solos. NOT. I still hope that I will buckle down and learn what I need to know to become a proficient guitar player.
Thanks for checking out the video! Just do it! Pick one or two things that you want to get better at and try to focus a little time every day! I still get excited when I make new connections on the fretboard! Keep rockin my brother ✌️
understand totaly i just think people should here how crule people can be and what your up againest and what you do by shairing with all of us is a blessing .. im not a Ny errrr im a native VT. i enjoy your channel thank you Rusty
I did not know the 12 bar blues . Once I got that I really progressed quick. I have been on stage many times playing lead and singing . I do not believe I am a pro but getting there . Covid kind of killed it for a lot of folks playing out .
If you’re jammin with some other players with the 12 bar blues, you are definitely in the advanced stage! That’s exciting! I appreciate your comment and have a rockin weekend, Tony ✌️
Working to move into iintermediate level. Playing with others and playing variety of styles has helped me push myself on challenging parts I would not have pursued.
Felt sure this was gonna be me. But it turns out I'm just LAZY!!! Yet there's maybe hope...a Rusty video always makes me pick up my guitar. For 2 mins, 5 mins 10 mins, ... 😁🤩😍
I'd say the things that got me to intermediate level are #1 I had all my guitars professionally set up. #2. Watching lessons like yours #3 . Learning about Triads which led into 3rds 4ths etc. #4. For rythm has to be finding backing tracks that show the cord progressions ! This helped me immensely. #5. Getting to the point where it's not practice anymore I actually look forward to playing every night now! Good luck all.
That’s awesome! You are well on your way to being a great player. I’m the same way. I look forward to playing every day. Just having fun with it. Thanks a lot for checking out the video.👍
Wow, Rusty! I considered myself an intermediate guitarist, but now I realize I'm more advanced than I thought! I play my guitar daily, even if just for a few minutes (hours, if I can), to make music. I make my own sound through technique. I have good rhythm, ppl have always said I have "natural" rhythm. I play notes with feeling. I've learned a LOT of theory from YT videos, more than I ever learned before. (I even took a course in college!) I don't know a lot of scales or modes, don't care. I know pentatonic shapes, the Major & minor scales, how to make my own chords, triads, etc. I'm learning the notes all over the fretboard. I know how to easily figure them out, but I don't always know them instantly. But, I'm getting there! I truly get enjoyment from playing. I can make music for hours, just "fooling around" sometimes, not even playing "real songs " I'm learning a repetior of songs to play to entertain people. I've written songs in my younger years, I plan to write better ones now. I'm learning what it takes to make a song really good. Excellent guidance from you! Thanks for everything you do! 👍 👌 🤪
It sounds like you are an advanced player. But obviously will be learning forever on this instrument! I know you’re really having fun on that guitar though. I’m glad to be on the Guitar journey with you Jeff. Have a great weekend, buddy.👍
Definitely.Would love to learn more about muting streams and a song sort of like Dire Straits Sultans of Swing And how he just runs down a couple of strings before he goes into a little lead.Appreciate everything you do rusty
I’m definitely going to do some song breakdowns coming up. Showing the notes and the techniques. And most of all the muting technique. Thanks a lot, my brother.✌️
Long time beginner on the road to intermediate. Luckily I find music theory really interesting and a great thing to keep the mind active in retirement. Happily making progress .
OMG , YOUR IN MY BRAIN. LOL i have no thumbs but can play abit, ive never had anything i cant adapt to.. it gives me a challange. im seriously learning lots from you.. keep going fella we all appreciate your time my biggest stumbling block is where to go next on the fretboard.. i bet uve heard that a million times..
Hi Rusty! First of all I would Like to thank you for all you Great lessons.I am 62 years old an have been playing guitar since I was a child, but I have never found better lessons than yours. I hope to learn a lot more from you. Kind regards! Roland/ AUSTRIA
I really appreciate that mate! Thank you for the kind message. And I hope we can keep working on this stuff together, Roland! Talk to you soon, buddy.👍
Excellent advice’ I’m like you in many ways. I’ve been playing over five decades and now you’ve helped me study and plugging in the triad and other exercises you’re taught me. I’m learning the root notes and I’m unlearning bad habits now and I’ve been improving exponentially. My skills are returning and improving. Helps me so much . I PLAY WITH WHAT I FEEL IN MY HEART. NOW I AM MORE INTENTIONAL WITH MY LEAD SKILLS ‘ ❤
Thanks for the conversation. I do like these checklists of things to work on. Phew mostly intermediate at this point but still things to perfect from the beginner list. Thanks for the human touch to guitar learning, playing, and life.
At the moment I find myself somewhere between longtime beginner and intermediate. I need to learn more about keys and chord progressions as well as brush up on my timing. That being said, after a while of not putting in much effort, it is nice to know that my slow gains set me up to improve rapidly again once i started putting in effort again. I'm glad I found your channel!
Great Lesson Rusty. I believe I'm at the intermediate stage. But there are things that I need work on to make me solid in this stage. Your triad and soloing over the chord changes lessons are gold. And yes I get lazy.
Thanks Rusty. I resemble this!!! It is interesting that when I hear a recording of myself I cringe. At that point after I get past the cringe factor, I have one of three options. 1. Turn off the recorder and delude myself. 2. Give up and never play again 3. Be honest with myself and seek to improve. I choose option 3. Man I got a ways to go!!!!
Excellent video! Thank you very much! 🙏🏻 I'd personally like a more detailed video showing techniques for muting strings, since I have trouble with that, especially when bending strings. Thank you so much for all your teachings, I find them really valuable.
Thanks Rusty! So glad I found both your channels. These are great definitions, they really help to judge where a person is in their playing. I think I’ve hovered at low intermediate for a long time, and channels like yours are helping me change that. I’ve played in our church worship band for a long time, but didn’t practice much at home. I’m really working on stepping up my game, practicing daily, learning the fretboard and the notes of the chords. What game changers learning those two things are! Could you do a video on making a lick? I tend to just run through the scale, can’t seem to really come up with something that goes beyond that. Thanks for your channel!
That’s exciting that you’re practicing daily! You will really start to move forward quickly that way. I do have a few videos on creating phrases. And I will definitely do more in the future. Thanks for all your support.✌️
In case it's of use for anyone else: I already knew the fretboard up to the fifth fret automatically. So, finally, after a lifetime of being stuck there, I recently have been practicing in seventh position almost exclusively for several months. It has been life changing, as I now know the whole fretboard automatically instead of just half of this instrument. I now think of the guitar as two instruments: one from open strings to fifth fret, and the other from seventh fret to 12th fret (with the sixth fret the dividing line). These two halves look very similar. Naturally, one then has to attach them and work on horizontal fluency...
Great stuff Rusty, you have a new subscriber ! I am certainly a loooong time beginner. After a long 30- year plus layoff, i recently got back into playing again. I love the instrument. Life just got in the way. So after dusting off the rust , I retaught myself the basic chords and developed the callouses again. i hired an instructor, and basically, we are stripping away the bad habits learned as a teen. I have a long way to go, but the journey has been fun. Thanks to your information and my instructor, maybe this time next year i can get to that intermediate stage🎉
A friend of mine recommended this channel, this is the first video I've watched, and I am hooked already. And, I am so relieved! I thought I was a long-time beginner, but your checklist best describes me as intermediate. I have good rythm, I can sing and play, I know the low E and A string very well, I understand 1-4-5 theory, I can play major and minor scales, and I know the two-over-two-up method of finding the octave. I can do some vibrato and string bending, and I can mimic a few solos Whew! But I still regard myself as a shitty guitar player. Improvising still eludes me. Perhaps because I have one persistent "longtime beginner" trait: I am lazy.
Well, I’m so glad you found my channel! We can definitely keep working on this stuff together! But I am right with you with the lazy part! But the older I get the more I love playing the guitar! Thanks a lot for checking out the video👍
know all the theory but have trouble applying it so I would call myself an advanced longtime beginner. Thanks for your tips. hope to continue to improve
Just keep listening to the guitar players that you love. And try to apply that theory knowledge to what they’re playing. And that will start to rub off as you create your own style. Thanks so much for checking out my videos.👍
Spot on. I now know my label and what to work on. Is there any role for a simple drum machine over a metronome? Or have I just fallen into the “shopping for equipment “ rabbit hole?
Hello Rusty, one point I wud like to add is....( ideally ) have your own music corner/room where you can just pick up the guitar and practice anytime of the day without having to accomodate to any other roomate, neighbours or family members. That's why I am a long time beginner. Yes, youtube guitar gears and effects review can be distracting too..!! Your tutorial are great...!!
It took me some time to know my role with the guitar. I’m blessed to have no endpoint. So much about my being in acceptance of my current level, is that now I can actually hear how to build a solid foundation. A few weeks back you gave us a one chord vamp for practice. If I cannot do it with one chord, how will I even hear progressions. A step at a time.
@@rustysguitar1 Seriously Rusty, there are a lot of us out here wondering, are we learning what we need to get better. I passed like 6 of 8 of the are you a long term beginner tests (a good thing) and 2/3 of the 8 intermediate steps (I made up the number of steps). So, it shows me what I'm doing right and where I need to improve. In fact, last night I started back on a rhythm tutorial that I had purchased just because I watched your video. Sure, its always fun to learn that Jimi H. song you love, but its also important to put the work in to form a foundation. Its also important to have some fun. Keep the video coming Rusty, they are some of the best in the Net.
@FrankRizzo557 it definitely sounds like you’re improving Frank! We really just need to have fun and work on the things that can help us reach our goals. Thanks bud 👍
Appreciate your channel and have learned a lot. Would love a video on hearing the chord changes while singing and playing simultaneously, and combining little pentatonic riffs and fills with the chords as part of the rhythm. Combining these techniques like Hendrix, etc. Great channel!
You definitely won’t hear me singing and playing or teaching it because I’m no good at it. But we all need to get better at hearing and playing over the chord changes. Definitely lessons like that coming up! Talk to you soon.👍
I think my biggest wish is for someone to put together a **structured program of specific things to practice in a specific order** to help move from the beginner to intermediate levels. There are tons of programs for beginners that teach chords, strumming patterns, pentatonic scales in a structured way. But, it seems like anything more advanced becomes a mish-mash of great ideas just thrown in a bag randomly. The journey turns from following a specific practice regimen to a free for all where I find myself not really knowing what I should be practicing next and instead trying whatever the lesson of the day is without consideration of whether or not I have the prerequisite skills to be successful. Human nature being what it is, this will generally result in moving on to tomorrow's technique in hopes of finding success with that one. Food for thought for a future video series or a for-sale program. I know I'd be the first in line to purchase any program you produce as I'm impressed every day with what you post to YT for free. Thank you!
I just do this part-time. And I’m just trying to add some structure to the intermediate player. I appreciate the feedback. Thanks a lot for checking out my lessons.👍
Hey Rusty, great video mate 👍🏻 I’m been struggling to move on from being an intermediate player, I jam with a buddy once a week which is fantastic as he’s an advanced player. I’m learning all the time watching your videos, just wish I could practice more. Thanks Rusty & have a great weekend 👍🏻🏴🎸
Hey Dave, you’re moving forward, but it’s just not as fast as you would like. Most of us don’t have a lot of time to practice. Thanks a lot for taking the time to watch my videos. Have a great Sunday my brother 🙏
Hey Rusty! I was hoping you would make this video. I love the checklists . I feel that in a lot of ways, I’m an advanced player. However, in some aspects, I may be a long time intermediate. Great video man. You are an inspiration!! 👍
I think we’re both advanced but continually improving!!! And I know we’re both having fun! Thanks so much for checking in Clay! Enjoy the rest of your weekend👍
Damn Rusty you're a genius!!! You should've started on here 10 years. I might know all that stuff. No I never look for gear I just keep trying to play. And no I didn't learn the notes but now I am because I found you. No I never knew theory because no one ever taught me. Except you. There's one other guy attempt to do what you do. Except Guithrie trapp!!! Amazing guitarist. Whatever he drills it in to learn this type of stuff but he does not show you note for note. And he tells you he won't because he wants you to pay for it. That's OK this is America. Thank you gentlemen
I really do appreciate that! I’m glad you are getting something from the videos. But Guthrie Trapp is a fantastic guitar player! I learn from him also. Thanks a lot for all your support to my channel and let’s keep rockin my brother.✌️
I'm working on that stuff you mention, after noodling for years, particularly learning the notes, it's not easy but it's something you need to move forward, i think. I reckon John Frusciante from the Chili's is a good player to copy and analyse, but each to their own, it's interesting when you learn more and it hits you 'Oh that's why they're doing that' , It generally fits around the theory.
I’d call myself a lazy intermediate. I know the fretboard & chords in different positions, but I tend to play the same patterns. I just don’t work at it enough. I’m going on 72 now & just enjoy playing with backing tracks. I’m capable of more, I just don’t have the drive. I play 2-3 times a week, 30 minutes to an hour each time & enjoy it. I wish I had known what I know now 25-30 years ago ! I went thru the gear buying phase, still own more guitars than I need, but I think I’m over that now. Thanks for sharing your tips ! I’m really enjoying Bible Study now. I know you can relate to that !
Hey Tony, thanks for checking out the video! Sounds like you have fun with your guitars! I’m glad you’re in a Bible study 🙏 I appreciate the comment! Catch you later 👍
Well Rusty I don't spend a lot of money on equipment or pedals & such. I'm retired but, I do fit most of all you have pointed out. I play along with songs on Siriusxm and you tube. I have been playing for 5 years now but can't seem to learn ruffs that stay with me. I don't get enough time to practice like I should and, I know, practice, practice, practice❗I am learning the notes on the fret board, pentatonic scales and learning triads. Learning how to move them up and down the fret board is bogging me down. I don't know what the chords they are. I have charts that have all the different notes on it but I don't know what fret they are on. It doesn't tell me, unless I'm reading it wrong. I play in church and I must say I am getting much better but, If someone asked me to play something I wouldn't be able to do it. I don't know anything. I feel defeated but, I'm not giving up. Thanks for all your great lessons. I've learned quite a bit from watching your RUclips vids.
Hey Ronnie, you are working on the right things so I hope you keep pushing yourself and have fun along the way! Thanks for watching my videos and enjoy your weekend👍
Great guide to determine where we are on the instrument..........going by your checklist im intermediate Rusty and continuing on working to get better........ i practice to backing tracks as none of my friends play instruments ...........i cam chord tone solo to most of them but there are one or two i struggle to solo along to.........can you offer any advice on this? Should i stick on a backing track i struggle to solo too and go through all the notes to see what works?Paul from Ireland
Hey Paul, something I like to do is search out players jamming over a similar backing track or maybe a tune with similar chords. This will give you a lot of ideas for phrasing and playing over the chord changes. good to hear from you, Paul. Talk to you soon.👍
Thank you. I'm a looong time beginner. I have rhythm, but I am practicing all the open chords over and over with little knowledge of the fretboard. Started to dabble with the pentatonic, and major/minor scales, thinking that it would just happen. I don't have the confidence to join jam sessions and I know I'm missing out. Thank you maybe I will dive into some theory to get some sort of understanding what's going on.
the only thing that I need to work on is Rhythm playing I'm getting there I feel I am at a Intermediate level but I don't care I love the journey at this point of my life, you never stop learning I not worried about gear I have two amazing guitars , amp maybe one day I will look at something bigger but my little Boss Katana Mini works great amazing little amp be happy what you have is my motto ,
What I really hear in your comment is that you’re having fun with that Guitar! I like your attitude. I’m glad to be a part of your Guitar journey. Thanks.👍
I always believed that when they say 10 mins, they feel that you'll see small improvements quickly that will have you playing for hours without even thinking of it. Or maybe not, and they're just full of it trying to make a buck. LOL
The way that I usually hear the 5-10 minutes a day for practice, tends to be either for those with a time crunch (some that you can learn to play, not necessarily get good); or for those who are in a slump-because at least you’re still playing. It’s about baby steps to self-discipline. Quite frankly, it’s how started my journey to relearning how to play after 25 years, where my should be my best supporter was the enemy in the same home... I played in spite of her... and found a way to beat those odds. Still... I’m probably just a long time beginner, whether I cross the threshold or not, I’m practicing for intermediate some day. Thank you.
Hi Rusty, thanks this is another good one for advice on where a guitar player should be and also what he should have learned getting there, and it doesn't happen overnight or in a 10 minutes you tube video either, it takes years of practice with dedication to the cause of getting better, ive played for years now but I still find inspiration in your own videos, I think that I could get away with calling myself intermediate but your a better player than me lol 🎉I feel like a beginner at times watching you Rusty, but I love everything you teach cause I'm self taught basically and I learn here 😊no more needed to say ❤keep up the good work my friend ❤
Thank you for the kind comment, Alan! I really do appreciate all your support to my channels! I’m happy to go through our Guitar journeys together. Talk to you soon, brother.👍
A former drummer, my timing is fine...so playing rhythm I don't think is the issue...although I only know so many chords.. I am self taught so I never formally learned the fretboard...playing by ear, I mimic much of what I hear so in essence I'm not always sure what actual notes I am playing...I know the octaves but just have to count the frets in order to figure out what note I'm on.. I am at the stage where I am bored due to playing the same things every time I pick up a guitar. Looooong time intermediate (I think). I'm retired so I pick up one of my guitars at least once a day...sometimes during the day plugged in to my DAW, or at night sitting in front of the TV.
Thanks for checking out the video! Playing by ear is such a good skill to have! If you learn the fretboard that board feeling will go away because you will have confidence in what you’re playing. At least it was that way for me. Thanks for checking out the video.✌️
I identified with this as an older long timer. I know theory pretty well and work on memorizing note locations every day, but still need to look at tab or chord charts. If you asked me to play "Happy Birthday" by ear I could not do it. I also can't identify changing chords and hit the right notes, although I know the layout of the Pentatonic scales pretty well.
Well, it sounds like you’re doing some things. Well but need to work on a few others. Thanks for sharing some feedback here. And thanks so much for checking out the video Frank.✌️
It comes down to putting in the practice - like with anything you have to master. I have been playing casually since I was 13 when I got my first guitar. I studied music theory, but I have probably a thousand hours tops on the instrument itself. That makes me a solid beginner. You have to put about 10k hours into playing before you can even come close to saying you have mastered the instrument. Contrast that with my best friend who, after I taught him a single lick, spent 10 hours a day playing for 6 months. He ended up joining a band and is a studio musician now. So yeah - it's all about the time you put in.
You are so right, we do have to work at it! But having that music theory under your belt, gives you a solid foundation! We all progress, a different rates. Thanks a lot for checking out the video and enjoy your Sunday🙏
I would love to hear your thoughts on what level you’re at. Longtime beginner, intermediate or advanced. Thanks everyone for all your support.👍
It was something along the lines of "music is what we perform: music theory is simply the language we use to explain to others what we're doing when we perform and how to perform it themselves."
"It's in 4/4." "It's in G." "G-major or G-minor?" "It's a 1-4-5" chord progression." "A V7 chord wants to resolve to I." "A minor chord has a flatted 3rd." "A pentatonic scale has no semitones." These are all examples (of varying abstruseness) of music theory - the language of instruction in music.

@16:58 "the older I get the more I have fun playing the instrument I've been blessed with"
I second that statement brother ~ Thank you and God bless you
That’s exciting! Having fun playing again! I’m right with you Kerry! Blessings to you also and Happy Sunday 🙏
Hi Rusty. I’m a long-time beginner. I meet all the criteria you mentioned. Thank you for this video.
Let’s keep working on this stuff together Stephen! Thanks buddy 👍
What an honest, educational, and real description!
I really do appreciate that, John! Thanks for watching and let’s talk soon, buddy✌️
According to your list I am intermediate, but feel more like a beginner. Thanks
Maybe so, but if you are actively working on those checklist items, you are definitely moving forward! Thanks a lot for checking out the video👍
Thanks!
Thanks a lot for this support John point it means a lot to me. Have a great weekend, buddy.👍
Thanks for checking out the video. And keep rocking on that guitar. Talk to you soon.👍
@@rustysguitar1
Like some of your students I am older. I felt guilty about spending a lot of money and time "trying" to play guitar as if it was some sort of race. What I love about your work is how you teach us to forget all that and listen. I am grateful.
Cool! I’m happy to hear that you like the lessons!!! Thanks and enjoy your Sunday 👍
Sorry to hear about your health issues! I hope you can pick that guitar up soon! Thanks a lot for checking out the video Randy🙏
At 71, it can vary from day to day, minute to minute. :) Lotsa good concise information. Thanks for what you do Rusty!
I think we all know what to do to move forward. Sometimes we just need the motivation to do it! I appreciate the comment, Stew! Enjoy your weekend.👍
I took basic music theory in highschool. It really did help me understand how to play guitar before I ever picked one up.
I bet that was really helpful, Michael! Having that connection can make these RUclips lessons much more understandable. Thanks so much for checking out my video.👍
At 64, I've been a long-time beginner, since I was 8-9 years old. 😱. That said, I understand a reasonable amount of theory. 😊
I've been a hard-hitting acoustic player forever and spent 10 years playing in a church band.
- Rod
Hey Rod, you’re right it is completely different. You are working hard and moving forward. Maybe it seems slow, but I know you are thanks so much for taking the time to watch my videos and supporting my channels. Enjoy the rest of your weekend Rod✌️
I've been trying to learn to play for 3 or 4 years. I know some basic theory, but struggle to really progress with my playing. I've also followed various youtube teachers, and I've come to the conclusion that your channel is the best for me. You are a wonderful teacher and player, and your content is extremely helpful to me. Thank you Sir.
I’m glad my lessons are helpful to you! Thank you for following my channel and I hope you have a great weekend👍
That’s exciting Ken!!! Thanks for checking out some of my videos! Keep rockin my brother 😎
Oh yes! Very long time beginner!!! Thanks for your lessons Rusty❤
I know you’re close to that intermediate level! Let’s keep working on it! Thanks, Kim😎
I think I’m low level intermediate. This checklist makes me think about where I can improve.
I’m glad the video made you think about things to improve on and maybe some goals for the future. Thanks a lot for checking out the video.👍
I see myself as an eternal beginner guitarist as every day I want to learn something new.
Cool! Thanks again bro 😎
Oh yeah, a forever long-time beginner! LOL Lots of great advice in today's lesson, Rusty ~ Hope you & your family & friends have a good Memorial Day weekend!
Thanks so much, Karen! I hope you also have a awesome memorial day weekend! Talk to you soon❤️
Excellent topic! One thing I learned over the years is not to be afraid of learning genre that you don't normally listen to. When I was invited to play with different people in different places, i quickly realized i had to learn what they played so I could be included again whenever they played again. I'm just a hack but i do have fun with it 😊
I like the way you look at it! Just having fun! If it sounds good, play it! Thanks for checking out the video Ron. Talk to you soon.👍
Many thanks
I’m glad you are pushed out of your comfort zone with my videos! Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos!. I really do appreciate it John.✌️
THANK YOU, Checked them all on the long very long time guitar player. Totally have it up for a long time but past time to push to get to the intermediate level. No more gear until I earn it.
You’re not alone, my brother! Let’s keep working on this stuff. And also, let’s have fun along the way. Thanks and let’s talk soon.👍
Thanks for the feedback Rafa! Well said. We’ll keep working on this stuff my brother! Talk to you soon 👍
As a longtime beginner, this. Post makes perfect sense.
Right on Steve! Thanks for the comment!👍
I like the way you look at it! I’m glad I’m along for the journey! Thanks a lot for checking out the video👍
Thanks for checking out the video William! It’s always exciting to add something to what we already know! Have a great weekend👍
Good point! Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos!. Talk to you soon.👍
Cool! Thanks for sharing that! I appreciate you watching the video👍
Felt sure this was gonna be me. But it turns out I'm just LAZY!!! Yet there's maybe hope...a Rusty video always makes me pick up my guitar. For 2 mins, 5 mins 10 mins, ... 😁🤩😍
If you’re picking up that guitar, there is hope for you😂😂😂 Thanks a lot for taking the time to check out my lessons. See you soon.👍
Good stuff as always Rusty. Thank you.
I appreciate that Dwayne! You’re welcome and enjoy your weekend👍
(I even took a course in college!)
I don't know a lot of scales or modes, don't care. I know pentatonic shapes, the Major & minor scales, how to make my own chords, triads, etc.
I'm learning the notes all over the fretboard. I know how to easily figure them out, but I don't always know them instantly. But, I'm getting there!
I truly get enjoyment from playing. I can make music for hours, just "fooling around" sometimes, not even playing "real songs "
I'm learning a repetior of songs to play to entertain people.
A lesson on muting strings is exactly what I was going to ask for.
Long time beginner on the road to intermediate. Luckily I find music theory really interesting and a great thing to keep the mind active in retirement. Happily making progress .
The foundation of music theory will take you a long way on the guitar! Thanks so much for checking out our videos Tony. 👍
I'd say I'm a longtime intermediate. I'm too lazy to become advanced. But this video has challenged me to push myself more.
So many of us are lazy about learning guitar! I’m glad this video has challenged you. Let’s keep working on this stuff together. Thanks.👍

Thanks for the human touch to guitar learning, playing, and life.
You’re welcome Brian! It sounds like you’re moving forward my friend! Thank you for the support of my channel. Enjoy your weekend ✌️

Sounds good my brother 👍
Great Lesson Rusty. I believe I'm at the intermediate stage. But there are things that I need work on to make me solid in this stage. Your triad and soloing over the chord changes lessons are gold. And yes I get lazy.
Thanks a lot, Greg! You are practicing the right things! I appreciate your checking out the lesson. Talk to you soon.👍
Another superb presentation Rusty 🎸🎵🎸🎵
Thanks a lot, Tony! 👍
Thanks Rusty.
I resemble this!!!
It is interesting that when I hear a recording of myself I cringe.
At that point after I get past the cringe factor, I have one of three options.
1. Turn off the recorder and delude myself.
2. Give up and never play again
3. Be honest with myself and seek to improve.
I choose option 3.
Man I got a ways to go!!!!
I love how you put things Robert! I can tell that you’re working at it! I’m glad that I’m part of your Guitar journey. Talk to you soon.👍
Excellent video! Thank you very much! 🙏🏻
I'd personally like a more detailed video showing techniques for muting strings, since I have trouble with that, especially when bending strings.
Thank you so much for all your teachings, I find them really valuable.
Muting is so important! And overlooked! A very good topic for a lesson! Definitely one coming soon! Talk to you soon Martin👍
Fretboard knowledge is so important. And so many players overlook it. I appreciate your comment here! Have a great weekend.👍
Great video sir! You'll be reaching 100K pretty soon.
Right on brother! Thank you for all your support👍
That’s awesome that you’re playing again Mark!!! Keep working at it! Catch you later bro 😎
Using a drum track is definitely more inspiring to practice with! I use drum tracks from RUclips. Keep rockin David! Thanks ✌️
It’s good to have a place to focus on your playing! Thanks for the feedback! See you soon 👍
Solid foundation! I like that Cathy! We are having fun! Good to hear from you! Catch you later ❤️
Nice roadmap discussion.
Thanks, Frank! I appreciate the comment👍
Very interesting and nice video!
I’m glad to hear that! Thanks for watching👍
Good video, makes you think!
Thanks again, bud. Enjoy your weekend.👍
Great video. Really a solid list.
Thanks a lot Ben! I appreciate it bro 😎
Thanks so much for the support to my channel! I’m glad you’re getting something from the lessons! Have an awesome weekend Luis 👍
@@rustysguitar1 Thank you brother. Have a great weekend as well!! 👍😎🎸
@@ClayJarvisGuitar You’re welcome! It’s always good to hear from you Clay ✌️
Rusty you are right! I'm terribly lazy! 😢 this is Imli k imchen
May you keep us inspired 🙏❤
You and me both! It’s really good to hear from you! I’m always happy to help! I hope you have a great weekend👍
Good comment! You are doing it right! Thanks for checking out to lesson and have a great Sunday🙏
You’re welcome! I do have video lessons on all those topics! Thanks for checking out the video and keep working at it 👍
the only thing that I need to work on is Rhythm playing I'm getting there I feel I am at a Intermediate level but I don't care I love the journey at this point of my life, you never stop learning I not worried about gear I have two amazing guitars , amp maybe one day I will look at something bigger but my little Boss Katana Mini works great amazing little amp be happy what you have is my motto ,
What I really hear in your comment is that you’re having fun with that Guitar! I like your attitude. I’m glad to be a part of your Guitar journey. Thanks.👍
One of the biggest lies of youtube guitar teachers is that you can learn in only 10 minutes a day, you cant, you have to practice, a lot!
Well, said Chris! To be good at anything we need to work at it. Even if you have natural talent. Thanks buddy.👍
Exactly. And well said. I’m so fortunate that practice is always fun to me :)
I always believed that when they say 10 mins, they feel that you'll see small improvements quickly that will have you playing for hours without even thinking of it. Or maybe not, and they're just full of it trying to make a buck. LOL
What if you try to teach I thing you are far better than those 😅
The way that I usually hear the 5-10 minutes a day for practice, tends to be either for those with a time crunch (some that you can learn to play, not necessarily get good); or for those who are in a slump-because at least you’re still playing.
@@rustysguitar1 thanks Rusty
Great advice god bess you
Thanks a lot, Samuel! Have a great weekend👍
Hahaha....long time beginner. Sad but true. Thanks for the advice Rusty.
Long time beginner rings true with many players! Thanks for checking out the video and have a great weekend👍
