That’s a interesting point Justin. I’m still halfway through Grade 1 and I sometimes get myself wondering when I will be able to learn the songs I like most. I already tried to learn guitar in the past and gave up exactly because of that. I wasn’t having fun. Now I’m not making the same mistake. Great advice. I started learning in high school almost two decades ago and stopped playing after about a year because I was discouraged with the lack of progress and hated playing Old MacDonald or things. Picked it up again last year and am loving it and progressing much faster than I did when I was young because I’m playing things I enjoy.
I do lots of things poorly. Too many great YT guitar videos to choose from. One YT teacher refers to this as "trying to drink from a fire hose". Now I'm going to really try and focus. Thanks for all the great lessons Justin.
You hit the nail in the head. What more is there to say that’s me in a nut shell. I want to play every song after 6 months of playing and find it impossible.
Hey Justin, this lesson is so important! Sounds so obvious, but its just so true. We all dont have enough time to learn everything, so lets focus on the songs amd styles we love and pick up the guitar for. ❤
That was a great video! I thought it was just me. I went through a spell recently where I was losing interest, because it just wasn't fun anymore. I was eating my broccoli. Was trying to learn Dorian and Mixolydian and it was work. For a couple of months, I didn't want to pick up a guitar. I learned that every once in a while you need some Cat Scratch Fever or Roadhouse Blues. Your video was a huge breath of fresh air, and made me realize it isn't just me. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this Justin. I am only three months in. I go to group classes and the instructor is pushing me with barre chords which I am struggling with. What works for me is small, gradual progress, baby steps. It's working for me playing the stuff I want to learn, not what I am being pushed to learn. Thanks again for your videos. It really helped me today 😊
Group classes must be great fun and mixing with other learners very beneficial. 3 months in is, imho, too soon for barre chords used in songs however. I started learning guitar from Justin since 20/10/2021 and almost 2000hours sit down practice guitar still haven't fully passed grade 3,my chords and solo skills way ahead of lv5 but my theory still behind thats why I can't improvise well and can't pass lv 3,it takes a lot of time and Ive started try different guitars and amps also to feel the notes in scales on the full fretboard and learn triads and etc
Everything you say in this video is so important. I used to feel a bit disappointed with my playing till I decided to work on my rhythm and focus mostly on rock. I decided to improve the things that I really need: major and minor open chords, 7th chords, power chords, major and minor pentatonic and major and minor scales, mainly for riffs. And that's mostly all the knowledge I've acquiered so far and now I'm just working out the rhythm part of songs that I like and composing my own tunes in a similar style. And I feel much more accomplished.

Hey, Justin. I'm currently doing your beginner course as well. And as you said we need to focus on the music which we like and find inspiring. My inspiration to play guitar is to play rock lead guitar with a little bit of John Mayer style blues. Though I don't mind learning rhythm guitar as a beginner. Learning lead guitar especially the more advanced styles seems like an impossible task to do at this point.
For me it is more easy to tell you what music i don't like, don't want to play, then the oposite. And this makes advancing so much harder. You find inspiration everywhere and you don't focus one one thing. The permanent procrastination, doing a bit and much too less on to many things. :( - focus, let me find focus ;) .... Hey Justin I was wondering if you could do a beginning lesson on the song Handle on you. Been enjoying learning all beginner songs with you so far. Thank you for everything you teach us :)!
absolute truth. Also, don't beat yourself up if you don't get in the chair everyday, although you really should try. I used to get all pissed at myself for not practicing, but then I learned to tell my self: Just do ten minutes of finger stretching and then you can go do "X". and I'd wind up doing two hours and really enjoying it. So, it has been really great learning from Justin (I'm 70 and I started about ten years or so ago with no experience at all.) and I still consider myself a beginner in many ways although my playing level is a really lazy Intermediate. I have no goal but to play to enjoy making music for myself. I mostly do fingerstyle now, because that is what appeals to me. If you follow Justin's course, you will suddenly find yourself playing music you only used to just sing along with the radio on. Am I any good? Nah, I suck at it, but it is okay because I enjoy what I do. As long as it's fun, you will keep doing it. The minute it becomes a chore or something you don't like doing, you are going to put your guitar down and never pick it up again. So thank you Justin And all your crew for giving me the help I needed to get going and to learn to plonk out tunes that keep my mind sharp and makes me keep going everyday. (Want to know which guitarist inspire me? Nick Drake Townes Van Zandt Gram Parsons Manitas del Plata Django Reinhardt and another dozen or so) so thanks again Justin.
Great lesson Justin. I've been practicing your lesson on John Mayer, Who Says. And have finally got it down, love it. Wondering if you could give a tutorial on he's song, Dear Marie, as it's the same thumb & finger slap combo, but easier chords. 👍🏻
I'm very comfortable playing just with my fingers, mixing the claw with strumming along with a little picking... Always using the alternating thumb as my bass.. But never a pick.. The Frye Guy..
perfect tutorial at the perfect time for me, so my genre i really want to do is singer/songwriter, so what techniques should i be focusing on? thankyou Justin!
Justin, I’d love to see you doing something from the likes of Bill Nelson a novel rock guitarist former Be Bop Deluxe lead & vocalist, Sunburst finish, Axe Victim Futurama etc. Paul.
I’m buying several of your books. I have your beginner book and your two beginner songbooks. If I buy your acoustic book and your rock book will the have some of the same songs as the two beginner songbooks? Thanks
Hey Justin, Off-topic question but, is the butterfly on your headstock actually a "JG"? Also, thanks for your lessons. They're very helpful to me in my learning-again (and correct this time) process.
Hey Justin, any chance you could do a lesson on a Bruce Cockburn song called: Child of the Wind? You probably get tons of requests like this but it’s a gorgeous song and can’t find any lessons on RUclips! I really want to learn it! Thanks!!!

Im still a beginner after playing every day for 15 years. Still trying to change between "easy" open chords fast enough. After 15 years, I don’t think I will ever be able to play a single song without messing things up. I guess some people just can’t learn...
I'm all over the place, not enjoying it much right now. I never had much instruction. I don't feel I have ever had a good practice routine, and I always resort back to trying to learn lots of songs I want to sing and then get frustrated with the lack of abilities to do anything well on the guitar.

Yes. It is like when they thought there was only one galaxy and then recently found out there ar billions . I feel it too. Also when I see really good guitarists - stars if you like- then two things happen : I get a little discouraged for a short time and then I keep going for new successes . I realise that I play better than anybody I've heard in real life and that my goal is to feel free on the guitar. You haven't suggested a song I didn't like yet - perhaps "happy birthday" .Could be because the accumulation of them is bothering me somewhat .
Do you know what's the most terrifying thing in understanding music is? Listen to the Radio and Bon Jovi is playing and think: Wow, that's a cool Chordprogression...😮
Still laughing my butt off “there’s only a few freaks in the whole of history” hahaha. Laughed so hard I had to pause the video tears of laughter down my cheeks lol. Oh man, thanks for this one!!! lol😂
Imagine an app that uses AI to analyze videos of your guitar, detecting potential issues like buzzing strings or out-of-tune notes. With audio analysis, it could even suggest adjustments to improve your sound. So you just record yourself playing your guitar, and if there's buzzing or you are messing notes up the ai assistant could help you, now everyone could have a teacher.

Nick Drake
Townes Van Zandt
Gram Parsons
Manitas del Plata
Django Reinhardt
and another dozen or so)
so thanks again Justin.
This is such incredible advice . It makes so much sense.
This is exactly what I needed to hear.
Me all excited when I see a new video from Justin. Love this guy.
Great advice , I needed to hear this .
Hey Justin, thanks a lot for your great advice. I love your lessons and I hope you make millions of dollars on YT!
Great bit of inspiration for me…thanks 👍
Great lesson Justin. I've been practicing your lesson on John Mayer, Who Says. And have finally got it down, love it. Wondering if you could give a tutorial on he's song, Dear Marie, as it's the same thumb & finger slap combo, but easier chords. 👍🏻
Thanks for the inspiration
So insightful! Thank you!
I needed to hear this!🙌🏾💕
I'm very comfortable playing just with my fingers, mixing the claw with strumming along with a little picking... Always using the alternating thumb as my bass.. But never a pick.. The Frye Guy..
Thank you Justin 🙏🏼
Many wise words spoken today!
perfect tutorial at the perfect time for me, so my genre i really want to do is singer/songwriter, so what techniques should i be focusing on? thankyou Justin!
Justin for President of Guitarland!!!
I watch Justin videos while getting ads to not learn via RUclips.
Thank you.
Justin, I’d love to see you doing something from the likes of Bill Nelson a novel rock guitarist former Be Bop Deluxe lead & vocalist, Sunburst finish, Axe Victim Futurama etc. Paul.
Can you play flamenko guitar? Do you play any other musical instruments?
I’m buying several of your books. I have your beginner book and your two beginner songbooks. If I buy your acoustic book and your rock book will the have some of the same songs as the two beginner songbooks? Thanks
Hi Justin, please add Brown Eyed Girl, Margaritaville, and Sweet Caroline to your Song App. Thanks!
Thanks!
Cheers 😊

Hey Justin,
Off-topic question but, is the butterfly on your headstock actually a "JG"? Also, thanks for your lessons. They're very helpful to me in my learning-again (and correct this time) process.
Hey Justin, any chance you could do a lesson on a Bruce Cockburn song called: Child of the Wind? You probably get tons of requests like this but it’s a gorgeous song and can’t find any lessons on RUclips! I really want to learn it! Thanks!!!
Thanks for the suggestion. There’s a song request board (plus 700+ song lessons) here:

Cool video!!
Im still a beginner after playing every day for 15 years. Still trying to change between "easy" open chords fast enough. After 15 years, I don’t think I will ever be able to play a single song without messing things up. I guess some people just can’t learn...
Justin seems like the nicest guy on RUclips.
I'm all over the place, not enjoying it much right now. I never had much instruction. I don't feel I have ever had a good practice routine, and I always resort back to trying to learn lots of songs I want to sing and then get frustrated with the lack of abilities to do anything well on the guitar.
Justin, would you ever make some lessons for genres like shoegaze?

So many comparisons to learning jiutjitsu to a high level here too
good stuff
Jeff Beck is not dead. God needed a harmonizer.
