Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, and Glen Campbell. Didn't understand how good these guys were until I was an adult.
Same.
All three were amazing!!!
I swear I'm not normally "that guy" but I feel compelled to mention Chet Atkins goes right along with those three.
@@aaronmiller9501 ,
Agree, in many ways Chet was in a class all his own!
Those 3 are my favorite guitar players on any genre...but they weren't just guitar players...they were showmen and entertainers...the greatest of the great!
Jerry was a freak. Mad skill, charisma, looks, and a sense of humor on top of all of it.
yeah...he was really something
I miss him
Yup, didn't realize until recently what a skilled musician and songwriter he actually was.
His fun personality really came across in his acting. So fun and charming.
You HAD to be talented back in the day. There was no auto tune, no photoshop ... just talent.
They were genuine talents, not manufactured products who were picked for their t!ts or abs.
Some of the absolute best players were self taught, like Reed, Campbell, Clapton, Page, Knopler and Atkins.
@@kathypiazza7228 Lindsey Buckingham is also entirely self taught.
@@DaveMiller2 I’m not surprised.
I agree, EVERYONE, was great, the competition was so much more fierce.
Jerry Reed was frickin awesome.... So much talent, in so many different things. Most young people dont even know he was a phenomenal guitarist, they just remember him acting in Smokie and the Bandit and such. Jerry was a first class performer, a d entertainer. A true showman who would capture the crowds attention instantly. Musician, actor, singer, song writer, comedian, etc etc etc... A remarkable man.
yepper. my dad was a huge roy clark fan mostly on account of his guitar work
Even his work in those movies is awesome.
My boys are 6 and 8 years old, I finally had them sit and watch smokey and the bandit and now they are hooked on the movie and the music of Jerry reed (aka) Snowman Cletus Snow
@@joesandysmokinjoesbeagles5862 Perfect! .. Well Done!!
@@joesandysmokinjoesbeagles5862i recently did the same with my nieces and nephews.
Jerry Reed. The most UNDERRATED guitar player ever. People tend to forget his guitar skills because of his acting career and comedic songs. Atlanta’s own Guitar Man!! #RIP
totally agree
When atlanta was great.
I agree. However, I'd have to say Roy Clark was also right up there as being a great and underrated picker.
When Elvis recorded Jerry's Guitar Man, Elvis requested Jerry Reed to play on the recording!
@@debbyschultz1729 According to Jerry, it was because the studio musicians could not get the sound right. They were trying to flat pick it. Jerry had "the claw".
I got to meet Jerry when I was a child. He stopped to help us when we were lost on a back road in Tn. He was driving an old ratty pickup. So down to earth and a genuinely a nice person. You would never guess he was rich and famous.
Haha ,tres cool.
"Eastbound and Down, we're loaded up and Truckin...
We're gonna do what they said cant be done" ~Jerry Reed
I heard rumors that he was meeting with the producer and other mucky mucks for the movie, and they asked him to work on a theme song for it. He left the room for about 15 minutes or less, and came back in with Eastbound And Down...
That would be a good one for an analysis.
We got a long way to go and short time to get there.
I sing this while driving my 18 wheeler down the highway.
@@Bikedueder awesome song😍🤩👍
Jerry Reed.... legend, shame he’s no longer here. The original Bandit RIP 😎
Jerry was the Snowman and Burt was the Bandit.
@@cliffwooddell5163 he was cast as Bandit first, when Burt said he would do the movie Hal Needham asked Jerry if he’d mind being recast as Snowman. Jerry being a smart man didn’t mind so long as he got paid. Jerry got to play the part in the third film.
These old school guys focused on Craft, not Gimmick.
True. I love Jerry Reed, he's one of the all-time great players and very influential among musicians who came after. But he had the Gimmick as well! He was a great showman, comedian and actor on top of being an undeniable virtuoso and innovator.
Baruch Cohen their craft was their “gimmick.”
@@alitlweird I was thinking that. And I think people, including me, didn't take them seriously or understand they were so great because they truly enjoyed themselves. No moody brooding to show their seriousness.
I'm glad you brought that up. point because I actually think the 90s did a lot to destroy musicians and or so-called musicians. Point being when they came out with artificial ways to produce almost any instrument it set rock and roll back 20 years.
@@terryeibeck8036 Brad Paisley and Keith Urban are 2 great players in the same vain as Chet and Jerry in the Country Genre. There are others in other genres. You just have to search for them.
Jerry and the great late Roy Clark were two of the greatest musicians of all time. Both were genuine down to Earth as you can get also. Terribly missed. R.I.P. guys.
I saw Roy Clark at the Warwick tent in the 90's and he was awesome as well
Thank you great video I had the privilege of being his bass player for 8 years. And you'll be glad to know he was one of the kindest people I ever knew in my life had a huge impact me. I encourage everyone to jump into his catalog because his best songs were mainly songs that were obscure and not heard by most people.
Cool!
Hey Bart!!! I "Facebook" know you!!!! ;) Didn't know you played for Jerry. Was that before or after Duncan?
@@ronshawver6880 I was with him in the 90s After Duncan

Try to make it out September 11th Ray Stevens theater will be doing our yearly Jerry Reed tribute
I love the shock and ahw young people express today when they discover Jerry Reed.
I'm one of them 🙋♀️
And I'm a boomer who is just really discovering him!!!......i knew of him a bit , just never really gave him the time of day, my apologies to his family and relatives, I'm very embarrassed.
I can do that one part.....where he takes a rest.
Jerry's version is still too technical for me. 🤣
Mine when he starts and plays but without chords
LOL! Hell, I can't even tune an E-string as well as JR!
We could duet that one part. 🤣
Lol. Good one Brian!
I still love Jerry's playing.
Jerry Reed is an absolute monster on the guitar, his instrumentals leave people breathless!!
Fil, this is the first time I've come across one of your reviews but in the last 15 minutes I've watched two of your reviews of two of the best pickers ever... Jerry Reed & Jim Stafford. I'll be watching for your work in the future.
Jerry and Chet Atkins were very good friends but it certainly didn't hurt that Jerry married Chet's daughter! This is some of the very best stuff I've found on RUclips.
Thanks, Gary
Jerry is so underrated.
@ mrbobevans: I respectfully disagree. Anyone who plays the instrument is fully aware of JR's legend. What diminishes any legend is death. You're no longer around to "defend your crown."
He had a beautiful voice too, love his "Remembering", a ballad .
@@MrGaryGG48 Never knew that Prissy was Chet's daughter.
Jerry Reed has to be in the top 25 all time guitarists. He was so versatile and fluid in everything he did. He was kinda mismanaged early on, but broke through nicely!
Top 25 lol try the top 5
Fingerpicking on nylon strings and a flat fretboard. Working with industry legends. Writing and producing. Movie and TV appearances…
To refer to Reed an entertainment phenom is not an overstatement. He was such a BEAST, and it's safe to say there'll never be another like him. RIP Snowman.
Amen.
Amen to that! That particular guitar is the model that Baldwin presented to a few Nashville pickers like Reed and Willie Nelson. Reed cut the top bout to get higher on the fretboard, and Willie’s was broken by a drunk at John T Floores, that’s when he ordered Trigger.
@@TexasbluestunesThey were awful guitars but had the first piezo pickups. They cost a fortune now!
Willie's still got the pickup from his Baldwin on Trigger.
@@alfsmith4936 yessir! I’ve been trying to find one, or something very similar for years. Great pickup and bridge design, but now technology produces better things.
My grandfather knew him and played with him. They met at an Atlanta studio when they were teenagers. When my grandfather met him at the studio, Jerry was playing the banjo. My grandfather played guitar with him. From there they became friends. Moved to Nashville at the same time. He was my dads godfather. He got that sound, partially, by incorporating his superior banjo skills into the guitar.
It’s gratifying to see Jerry acknowledged for his genius. How does he play that syncopated and quickly while so relaxed/behind the beat?
Because that's how he was wired.
While she's living like a queen on alimony
I'm workin' two shifts, eatin' baloney...........Lol
Asking myself, " Why didn't you just learn how to cook " ?
Cuz he was broke and baloney is cheap. Lol.

Nobody said turkey like Jerry. I loved that man's music more than his acting which was superb. A very underrated entertainer.
No more baloney dude! Too pricey! Back to eatin rabbits and such! Not complaining! Taking me back to my younger days! LOL
I saw Jerry in a tv interview say: “ Make no mistake, I love girls, but when Elvis walked into the studio, I thought, that’s the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen”.
Lol 🤩
Jerry talked about working with Elvis on tv right after he did that recording. I think it was the Ralph Emery show. It's been awhile. Anyway he said Elvis's Limo came to pick him up and he climbed into the Limo and sat down and he was looking right at Elvis. He said I said " Elvis, Son, you a purty man.
Jerry Reed was right
FACT.....Dolly Parton was madly in love with Jerry Reed. She literally stalked him and while doing that, she met other industry people who helped her career.
One of many understated guitarists we've lost. Thank's
I remember hearing a comment from one of Jerry Reed's closest friends. The friend said this, Jerry could have been a superstar if he had been interested in doing so. But the longer I live I realize that he was his own man. True to himself. As always thank you so much for another wonderful video and commentary. God bless.
Thanks for bringing attention to all of these great overlooked musicians!
Thank you for honoring Jerry Reed!!! He really was tremendously talented! We lost a treasure when Jerry left us! RIP Jerry Reed! 🙏😇❤
thank you for keeping these heroes alive and well
Jerry Reed was a BIG Jim Croce fan.Did a nice cover album of Croce after Croce passed .
The backup band was great and Jerry is out of this world in his playing.
Just like Roy Clark, Jerry combined humour, story-telling and fun with awesome guitar playing. Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Chet Atkins, and Jerry Reed were my guitar idols when I was growing up in the sixties. Sadly missed all of them.
Add Jim Stafford to that list..
When people say "underrated", they should be noting guys like Roy Clark, Glen Campbell and Jerry Reed (Chet Atkins has always gotten lots of props). While those guys were very well known in the 70's country music scene, they were definitely forgotten guitar heroes onward. As Fil noted, with Jerry Reed, the other aspects of their talent probably overshadowed their guitar playing.
And whomever keeps suggesting these videos, you are the real heroes.
Oh, it should be noted when Pat Metheny was young he backed Roy Clark on a gig. Pat gave him major props as a musician and person.

Love Gerry Reed, thanks for the feed back.
Finally, a reactor who has done his homework. Love all the background and your admiration of Jerry's guitar playing talent. He was a very talented gentleman.
Your 100% right on, Jerry Reed was MIND BLOWING!! Great reaction, Thanks!!
WOW! I was 17 at the time...yeah I'm an oldie but a goldie! Giggle! Most people remember him only for Smokey and the Bandit, which truly is Iconic but Jerry like Roy Clark is an American Icon and Legend! God bless you Jerry and Wings of Pegasus you are an amazing presenter of true talent! Love you my man and God bless you for the intelligence to recognize true talent no matter the era or the talent. You are a true talent unto yourself!!
Thanks!
Thanks for recognizing the great talent in what is now considered old country. I grew up listening to these artists as s child thank you ,you do them a great honor.
No problem!
Forgot to mention just what a likable guy he was. He just brought smiles to people, no matter what he was doing.
When I was a boy and we watched a movie with Jerry in it, my dad would say, "that guy's a DAMN good guitarist. " I remember Jerry "guest starring " in Scooby Doo.
Me too! That was actually one of the first things he ever did that wasn't strictly music
A lot of these older country cats don’t get the recognition they deserve. They’re absolutely amazing to watch.
mr east bound and down loaded up and truckin jerry reed i grew up with these legends my mom and dad listened to them all the time and hee haw was every week on tv miss those times, again thank you for bringing them back.
I just adore how much British people love American music. And the smile you have while Jerry is tearing is tearing it up. By the way I absolutely adore British music. With love from America.
Three years later... allow me to "second" that, Delphino! Great, great stuff!
I really like the interest you take in some of our country boys here. You can not go wrong going with Jerry Reed. Respect to you , amigo.
Jerry Reed was soooo talented. I don't believe he was ever given enough credit. Always enjoyed watching him play on tv in the 1960's, 70's, and 80's. Thanks, Fil!
I’ve just discovered your videos and have learned more about country musicians in the last week than a lifetime of being a fan of the genre. Thanks for explaining the magic!

He had so much talent. We are fortunate to have enjoyed all he had to offer us, his music, his songwriting, his singing, and his acting.

As much as i dig his stuff, I think watching you react to the music actually says so much more. I've been bingeing your channel and have to say your appreciation is absolutely plastered across your face and that is why these guys did these things. Kudos to you for your taste in music and the dedication you have to it.
Thanks Scott!
Thank you so much! What a rare person.
That was amazing; love how he keeps looking back at the other players while continuing his insane picking 😎
Thanks for posting this! Jerry Reed, one of my favorites.
Jerry was the consumate genuine guitarist that showed his stature by having fun and showing what guitar could do when you respected it.
Thank you thank you!! Memories are flooding!! My dad would play around and sing this when I was a kid!! ❤️Tennessee
jerry is one of my all time heroes.
I saw Jerry Reed in Abilene, Texas in 1977. He did a concert there but I didn't get to go see it .I was at the largest Country Western Club with a group of friends that Saturday night and he came into the club after his concert. He wasn't through playing and singing so he let his band go to the hotel and he used the house band and played and sang for
another 1 1/2 hours. It was awesome. He did all his hits and afterward invited a couple of my girlfriends and me out to the bus and gave us an autographed picture and a kiss on the cheek. It was fabulous and free because back then girls got in free before 9PM and we were always broke!! LOL!!
In addition to all of the things he could do, he was ahead of his time in video. He was the first country artist to use video projection and image magnification on his live shows. Jerry did it in 1983 and said that one day, every country act would be using video support. The industry laughed at the time, but his prediction had been borne out. He built Nashville's first independent broadcast quality post production and editing facility. Don't let the good ol' boy part mislead you, Jerry was way ahead of the crowd. He was a true genius and the consummate artist.
I've been around long enough that I remember watching this when it was originally broadcasted. At the time, I only saw him mostly in acting rolls. Then watching this, it totally blew my mind!
He’s loved his telecaster “
Excellent video my friend! I was raised listening to ole Jerry Reed, many days sitting on the porch like right now, listening to Jerry,,matter of fact that's how I ended up with you right now. Glad to have found you again! Thumbs up video ~John
Country folks knew all about him before his movie career
Excellent bio of Jerry. Well done, and thanks for giving some time to one of my favorite pickers of all time
Every time I hear Jerry Reed play, I wonder how much I can get for my guitars on ebay.
here's my 3 guitars, will you sell mine also
Someone once said that when you listen to Jerry and Chet play you realize you're not a guitar player, but a guitar owner.
@@hangemhigh113 - that's very funny...and true!
When I listen to him whants me take my guitar to the dumpster.
Agreed. And I can BLAZE.... just not like that! Kinda hurts, wish I would have gotten into Bluegrass in my teens.... I'm 50 now....its the fingerpicking that's the killer. .
“Fred! You get over here!!” East bound and down will always be my favorite song of his.
About 45 years ago, a friend told me that Jerry Reed probably played Chet Atkins style better than Chet Atkins. I have long believed my friend was correct.
Chet himself claimed Jerry was a better guitarist.
Your musical knowledge is amazing! I always learn something listening to you. Thank you.
Legendary guitarist Chet Atkins once said that he believed that Jerry Reed was actually a much better guitarist than him.
Don't misunderstand, but I think Chet's statement was true about many other younger guitarists. BUT ... all of those guitarists pointed to Chet as "showing the way" and never lost that enormous respect and love for the man who guided and encouraged them. Both Tommy Emmanuel and Richard Smith continue to gush about Chester (and Jerry) all these years after their passings. The most telling part about Chet's legacy is that to this day, these same Chet understudies continue to play the songs that Chet wrote and/or arranged, pretty much the same way that Chet performed them. It's hard to improve perfection! As brilliant as Reed was, I think both Emmanuel and Smith are better than Reed today. In due course, these two will also one day be overtaken by future generations of thumb pickers. That's just the way it works.
@@demef758 Nicely stated! As I understand it, both Tommy and Jerry hold Chet's coveted title of Certified Guitar Player (CGP). If that doesn't say it all I don't know what does!
DeWitt Potts That says a lot! Chet was a Master!
01goldg1 Steve Wariner was a CGP as well and Glen Campbell was a very exceptional guitarist with them back then also!
@Matt Beeman Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, throw a blanket over them, they were all crazy good.
One of my favorite guitarists ever. Thank you for showing this.
Jerry Reed was a legend in his own time. So many great musicians and songwriters have come out of the Southern states. No one can deny the talent and hard work, that went into their music.
Your videos are an interesting mix of performance analysis and historical perspective, delivered in a cheerful manner. Much respect.
Thanks!
I saw this a few years ago and it will remain on one of my favorite playlists. Glad to see someone your age exploring so many diverse styles. Jerry was a beast on every song he ever played and still impresses me as much as anyone.
David, I agree, but as the great sax player Jackie McLean used to say, ' to know what is new you MUST know what has been done previously' and reed had covered most of what the Shredder's stumbled onto couple of decades later ,(minus his taste and originality of course).
It is crazy just how good he was!
amazing videos, I had no idea all these 70's country artists could shred the guitar better than most of my guitar heroes. much respect to the old boys.
👍
There’s a lot more picking in the real, good old country music than most people seem to think. Probably because of what an awful monster country music, as a genre, has mutated into in this day & age, and it’s really a shame what’s become of country music in the last decade or 2.
Ha when I was 15 I had a crush on Jerry Reed. I didn't appreciate his guitar skills until I grew up. I always return to this site because I like your appreciation of all music styles.
Jerry Reed is one of my all-time guitar heroes. He is one of the reasons that I learned to play guitar, although I have yet to get anywhere near his level of ability. Oh yeah, I also act...in local community theatre, lol.
Thank you so much for this. I really wasn't aware that Jerry Reed could play like that. Wow.
Talk about Good ol' boy's !. Jerry is right up there near the top.
Rock on !.
Awesome. Didn't know all that about Jerry... or the mastery of his fingerpicking . Thank you for another excellent session!
Loved Jerry Reed. Mad skills on the guitar. When I was a child, growing up in southern Kentucky, an hour outide of Nashville, it seemed like everyone played music. Both my dad and mom played in country bands. A lot of people did. Dad learned guitar by listening to Chet Atkins and other country guitarists. It was just a way of life. People would just gather and just play music together. It wasn't until I was grown, that I realized that wasn't the norm everywhere. My dad was still playing guitar in church just a couple of months before he died at the age of 78.
Thank you, I got to know about Jerry Reed from Smokie and the Bandit, way back when, I loved the film, songs and lyrics etc. He's a much hidden/understated artist.
So thank you for the great review/overview of his talent/work etc.
RIP Jerry Reed, thank you for your music.
Jerry was a massive talent! I always try to watch the fret board and finger picking to see how he made the sounds he made but the weirdest is I try to spot if he has shoes on... more then one video I see him playing guitar without shoes on! Not sure why! He’s so damn good i don’t know if anyone ever asked why! Lol
I had forgotten how great Jerry Reed was! Thanks for this one!
What an amazing guy! He was one of the first to be named a 'certified guitar player' by Chet Atkins. Jerry was top notch on guitar, and a pretty good actor to boot!😁 He died way too young as a lot of incredible talents do, unfortunately.😖 My favorite song by him to this day is still Amos Moses.😉😁👍👍 Great review Fil.👍🎸😉
Thank you! That was a wonderful tribute to an exceptional talent. ♥
The guy could do it all. What a talent while remaining just your average joe!!!

Hi Fil! Thanks for taking the time to cover this video. I appreciate your bringing these artists back to the forefront. You always do a splendid analysis and you certainly do your homework as well. I'm glad you're doing these analysis videos, your work is a great service to the music world. Take care brother and keep em coming!
Hi Fil!! This video of Jerry Reed is spectacular!! I grew up in Houlton Maine. In the mid 80's I forget the exact year, we had Jerry Reed Live at the Houlton Fair. I was a young drummer back then and what a show!! I stood there while they did a sound check with my buddy Tim who is also a bass player. The bass player for Jerry was Paul Bryant and he was a monster player. I just wanted to say hello and I watch your videos often. Very nice Work!!
Great analysis as always, Fil. Thank you.

Man Fil you've opened my eyes to the country realm. These guys you've been reviewing are amazing. Can't believe I've overlooked this stuff as my mom in the 70s only listened to country but the stations she listened to only played the popular songs.
