Wings of Pegasus look up RUclips video of Glen singing MacArthur Park on TNN with Gary Chapman. He plays an amazing solo at the five minute mark. Keith Urban happens to be in the audience that day and gets his mind blown by Glen’s guitar solo.
I subscribed to this channel due to the fact that Wings of Pegasus seems to be a true musician, with an appreciation of talent. I like all music, as long as it's well done. The older I get, the more I appreciate artists like Glen Campbell.
Walter Palmer YES!!! I'm 60, and while I started paying attention to music in the 60's, the 70's and 80's are the decades that music forged my life. So many great musicians back then. Kids today have no clue what great music really is. My sons are 31 and 29. They heard the "oldies" that we listened to when we took a trip for a long weekend with their grandparents, and I'm amazed at how much music they love from back then and really don't like much that's out there now.
The thing about Glen as a guitarist is that he had such a great voice that his playing was sometimes overlooked by the general public. But musicians always knew he was a guitar monster!
I find glen's guitar playing to be superb, but his voice to be pedestrian. elvis's 1969 interpretation is the gold standard. the soul depth and diversity of elvis presley, puts you on those train tracks in the bitter cold rain. glen and john's voices are pretty pedestrian.
It warms my heart and almost brings a tear to my eye to see a young rocker not too proud to revere a great legend from a past generation. I'm very fortunate to have played with greats like Albert King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Milton, etc,and I greatly appreciate, respect, and honor your fine work here young man.
Thanks for your kind words. I have always said that Fil has the best comments sections on You Tube, so much respect and so much talent. You, sir, are why I appreciate this channel. BTW, I already have watched this 3 or 4 times, but there is always something more to learn and appreciate.
@@eleetse6701 You misunderstood. I've watched this performance of this song on this channel about 6 times. The song? Hundreds of times, like you. I believe it was the most played song on the radio for a while. Damn right, it's what makes me live. I'm nw living in Switzerland and trying to educate my daughters' friends who are very musical about this song. One girl is very talented, a great singer, and I think she could do a good version. Singing in English would be no problem since she can speak at least 5 languages fluently, an amazing thing. But it is hard for the younger generation to realize the idea behind this song. They've lost their freedom.
One thing is for sure, this British guy commenting on Glen Campbell LOVES music. It's refreshing to see someone appreciate others. Today it almost seems like appreciation is considered as a zero sum game, as if appreciation for you is appreciation lost for me. Keep it up young fella.
Hey, Fil--notice how your respect for Glen (and others) leads to so many commentators having respect for you? This is what we need a lot more of in society; this loop of positive appreciation...
Fil - I just happened to find your reviews and now I am addicted. I love how your dissect every part of someone's playing, songwriting and singing. Glen Campbell was a much sought after studio musician until he went out on his own. Also, how come you have such nice teeth for an Englishman?
Most people don't realize what an amazing musician Glen was. He played on so many albums as a studio musician as well. He played on many Beach Boys albums, and actually took over for Brian Wilson on a tour and only had 2 weeks to prepare....he played bass and sang Brian's vocals. The Alice Cooper interviews about Glen are really amazing as well, as they were great pals.
This was indeed a treat to watch Glen Campbell do this song in this setting. With Chet Atkins, Willie and Waylon, Crystal Gayle, and Roy Clark not only looking on but, enjoying and being astonished by Glens mastery of it all. It was also enjoyable watching and listening to you, Mr wings of Pegasus. You're obviously very musically knowledgeable. And the smile and emotion on your face is very genuine. Thank you for showcasing this piece.
Glen got screwed, as far as his image, with how they tried to middle of the road him on his weekly TV show. He was a bad ass studio cat, kind of the American version of Jimmy Page, who played, often uncredited, on everything. Glen did pop, rock, folk, country, all of it. My dad loved Glen and had Glen's big first album on 8track in the car. It really grew on me, even though I was heavily into Hendrix, Cream, Doors, etc. My bf played guitar and Glen was one of his idols, even though he didn't play that genre. I learned a lot about those guys from him, esp about not discounting musicians because they weren't young and cool. Some real luminaries here.
I can think of a dozen ways this could have been noted in a more respectful, and classy fashion - not everyone is going to know that, so why not toss it into the mix more as a mentor who knows an interesting fact that was clearly an innocent oversight, then with uncalled for aggression?
Wow Clive lighten up. The guys a British rocker who appreciates the talent of Glen Campbell and the rest of the country musicians there. From your response it would appear you missed that☺️
I grew up listening to Glenn Campbell and never really realized what an incredible talent he was. So nice to see such an intelligent and appreciative analysis. Kudos!
This song by Glenn, John Hartfords’, has gently been playing on my mind for 4 decades. He may be playing from high above in the skies, in a duet w/John, entertaining all the heavenly creatures forever. ♥️🤗
Same here. I don't remember a time without Glen Campbell. Funny thing about the 60s turning into the 70s is that radio stations didn't always follow their format strictly. Campbell easily fit in on any genre of stations back then and nobody would bat an eye.
And don’t forget who wrote this beautiful song , John Hartford was one of the most amazing song writers and banjo players not to mention was an incredibly talented fiddle player 🙏🏻 great video !
I am 67 years old, have played piano and guitar most of my life, and this is truly one of the most insightful, articulate analyses of a great performance that I have seen. Kudos to you for this outstanding presentation, and for your appreciation of past greats such as Glen Campbell. I am sure you are an outstanding musician and teacher in your own right. Great work!
Wings of Pegasus, I'm not a musician, but I appreciate the artistry and the talent required to be a "solid" guitarist. You explain the art and the technical aspects of the music, the instrument and the artist(s) in a manner that is delightful for me to learn from you. From a non-musician, thank you.
Ricky Nelson told the story of being in a studio in Los Angeles and he could hear what was going on in the other room. He needed someone to play guitar on a recording and he sent someone to get him. They had never met. When asked if he would play on the recording he said sure. So they handed him the music snd he said I don’t need that. Just start playing. He was perfect and amazed everyone.
I've loved Glen Campbell since I was a child when I picked up empty deposit soda bottles on the side of the road to save 45 cents and bought my first record "Witchita Lineman" - Glen stands head and shoulders above other artists from this era for all the reasons you describe and more. Glad to see this music is surviving in the hearts of people like you and not forgotten. Articulately and perfectly explained and described, you have a gift for talking about music!
It is so cool to see Fil’s genuine appreciation for great music and one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Glenn Campbell was and always will be one of the best ever.
Early 80's I'm in junior high and I was watching MTV. This guy was interviewing a band and asked their lead guitarist who the best guitarists in the world were at that moment. I seriously thought the guy was joking when he said "Besides Glen Campbell? It wouldn't be fair to lump him in with the rest". I remember thinking I wonder what his problem with Glen is? Now I realize he was 100% serious. I can't remember the name of the band,I think they were one of the ones who got their 15mins and then disappeared.
Another thing great about Glen Campbell and Roy Clark is how they helped other great artists get ahead. One in particular is Alan Jackson. Alan's wife, I think was an airline flight attendant who met Glen Campbell and talked to him about Alan's ability and the rest is history. They both helped promote so many. Thanks for the great videos : )
I watched this TNN special with my dad last year, just a couple months before he passed away. Just now, watching this, as soon as Glen started into it, I burst into tears.
Many people incorrectly believe that country players can only play country... WRONG. Nashville cats can play ANYTHING and better than most. Always so clean and tasty. But what I liked so much about this video was just watching the smiling faces of his peers all around him, appreciating this man's pure genius. A priceless moment in time.
Great musicians can often play multiple genres. A great example is Bluesman Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson (who played in Muddy Waters band for years, appears in movie "The Blues Brothers") wrote "Texas Cowboy", a beautiful COUNTRY SONG - and if he thinks he's got the right audience on a given night, he'll bust it out - always great!
True about Nashville musicians but Glen Campbell was originally a west coast studio musician. He was part of the Wrecking crew and played on all sorts of records.
He came across as such a genuine bloke, in no way full of himself, which he could have been easily with that talent. I've watched this clip loads of times and each and every time I get a lump in my throat and goosebumps because he's so great here..
@@blueneck74 Enjoy the journey, man. My mom always had Glen and Johnny Cash on in our home when I was a kid, so I grew up with his music. I never tire of it.
Was so sad watching his downhill slide as his health declined. I was working at a casino when he came during his farewell tour. I never got to see the show but a fan told me it was bittersweet to see him at less than his best. He was a magical performer during his prime. Too bad a lot of people don't realize how many songs he played on. He'll never be forgotten. Thanks for your great reaction and explanation of this man's playing.
@@wingsofpegasus Dude...the smile on your face while you're listenin' to this song....very cool. Do you REALLY enjoy this? Your words say so...but do you REALLY?
I said to Ben Folds 'music is the thread that binds our souls together' to which he replied' yes, but some people have very thin threads' which has nothing to do with this happiness, but I was made to think of it. Cheers.
Glen Campbell, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark and Chet Atkins set the path for all guitarist. Don't care how good guitarist today think they are, these early country pickers we're off the charts, alot of times with no one to follow.
I was fortunate and privileged to see Glen Campbell perform on his final tour after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and his performance was still so beautifully clear, melodic, and precise. Everyone in the audience knew he was very ill, and the love and support shared between the audience and Glen was palpable. It was unlike any other concert I’ve ever attended. Thank you for sharing this.
He sure did, and Merle Haggard said "if there was ever an example of a man given too much talent in one body, it would be Glen" ruclips.net/video/dd9nMrvBbmA/видео.html
I've watched this video a few times. These are the greatest musicians country music had to offer in that day. The smiling faces of those greats watching in awe of how good Glen plays is more entertaining then watching Glen play. The ability to play fast, intricate lines like it's stroll in the park while smiling and having fun is such a additional great skill Glen, Roy, and Jerry Reed had.
Man - your analysis is absolutely spot on. Knowledgeable, passionate and entertaining. Just looking at your face tells me how much you genuinely love it. Glad I chanced upon it. ♦️
@Chris Manzi And your point is....?????? We're talking about Glen Campbell and company here, you already made your mistake talking about wiping up the floor with Glen by Albert Lee. Don't piss people off anymore than you might have already done.
For some reason I always feel like shedding a tear listening to this amazing musician. I’ve learned more about him since his passing then I did when I was younger. Thank you for celebrating this wonderful man♥️
It’s nice to see a young professional as yourself admiring one of the greatest country musicians that ever lived Glen was great on the 12 string too. RIP Mr Campbell.
Certainly one of the best during his lifetime. Ever lived is probably a stretch - but Great for sure. Wanna hear some of the best that Ever lived listen to Benny Goodman. Big Band concert in Carnegie Hall in 1938 - It's on RUclips
Thank-you for offering your talent to breakdown these musical and vocal skills, with such eloquence yet simplicity. Not only with Mr. Campbell, but with each artist you analyze. You are a gem.
Coming from Merle Haggard is a great compliment as he was no slouch, either. Besides his own identity, he did great impersonations of other musicians. For the record, I've always been a huge Campbell fan.
@Chris Manzi Albert Lee is indeed a phenom on the guitar. And as such, he (Lee) would be the first to tell you how much he respects what Glen Campbell accomplished, the markets he opened up and his overall impact on the world of music. The true greats do not "wipe the floor" with other musicians, but instead respect them and look for things they can emulate. Do a search sometime for an interview Joe Walsh did about how he continuously studies other guitar players, in particular their RIGHT HAND technique and how they hold their picks, or if they finger pick, the position of their hands, etc. Joe Walsh is as good as they get and he doesn't look to "wipe the floor" with anyone. Instead, as most pros does, he looks to learn from his peers.
Watch the whole video and he sings a roy Orbison so g just watch crystal Gayle's face sure she is about to cry an absolute genius of a man sad to lose him
@Chris Manzi I WAS going to tell you that you'd better have some big balls to back up that claim, HOWEVER, I opened up a new tab and listened to him for a little bit and while I don't care for his music, his teeth, or his hair, he looks like an actual hillbilly from Arkansas! He can pick. I'm offering up a couple of Glen's performances of the William Tell Overture just for shits and giggles. In this first one, he is having so much fun with it, almost mocking the orchestra to speed up. If you don't read lips, I'll help you out here. The first thing he mouths is "faster", next time "I love this part", next time "slow",(aka wants to go faster), and the last one I can give you is "it's ok". ruclips.net/video/0bhuxkzjuQc/видео.html This second version he does part of it with the guitar ON HIS HEAD! ruclips.net/video/jjTI4VRX39Y/видео.html This last link is Glen and youngest daughter Ashley during his farewell tour (he needed a teleprompter for lyrics, but not for his playing!) Those musical lines run deep in the Campbell family. Be careful when you step on toes like those. Glen grew up in just about as much poverty as you could and still live. If his dad or an older brother shot a squirrel or rabbit or any wild animal, it was dinner!! Thanks to his abilities to be one of the greatest musicians of all time, he took care of his family very well. No more share-cropping for any of them. ruclips.net/video/iHAKpWs3Mbo/видео.html
My favorite guitar player ! Glenn was just a good country player who helped anybody he could when he made it . Never turned his back on his peers . His voice & guitar playing is excellent. You can tell everyone there is in love with this song , Glenn’s voice and his playing & he nails this solo as always
Very intelligent young man ,who broke this all down beautifully, and really recognized how talented Mr campbell was in his day, I miss all his Music, and this young man is right, his songs, sure told a story.
Ray's Music Exchange I was listening to one of his William Tell Overture performances, and before they started playing, he said that he and Roy had made a deal that Glen would never play Maleguena and Roy would never do William Tell Overture. I had to laugh at that!!
I especially enjoy the admiring looks from all the musicians toward Glen as well as each other as they play. It’s so clear that they have musicians’ appreciation of the high degree of skill and artistry toward one another.
Glenn Campbell was a great guitarist for sure who was also a member of the 'Wrecking Crew' in the 1960's. I remember when I first started playing guitar as a teen in 1984, and being amazed at watching the guitar solo from 'Hell Hole' by Spinal Tap of all things lol.
The Beach Boys were among my top 3 bands of all time. Glen played with the Beach Boys - as a BASS PLAYER. And as one of the 37 members of the Wrecking Crew, he has appeared on countless recordings. For me, Roy Clark and Glen Campbell are the best guitar entertainers I've ever heard and seen.
Americans love to hear our music heroes praised. Glen was a musician amoungst musicians. He truly was the most sought after guitarist for studio recordings before he actually became famous. Many American music legends in this video. Thank you Great Britain for honoring them. America loves and respects tons and tons of British artists as well!!
You know your stuff, bud. Nice to see a young guy who gets it. Glen was a legend. It's amazing how the yanks, brits, and Canadians really all have brought something great to rock and country music. So many greats from all three countries. Music is a common bond.
@wayne pitty Aww! God Bless your Dad.! A friend of my husband's wife came down with early onset. At 30 something. Within months she didn't even know who he was. It's one of my worst fears. A very close call for first( Outside of dying in a fire.). I can't imagine how frightening it must be.

Glen Cambell, In my opinion, the best Country guitar player ever ! He had it all and left us with some incredible songs and a great singer on top of it! The guy was a masterpiece to watch every time he played specials on TV. Loved this guy! Great you had him on! Rock!

Keep up the good work, Fil That banjo player in the background is Carl Jackson, Glen Campbell's banjo player for years. The great song was written by an earlier Campbell banjoist, the incomparable John Hartford. Campbell was one of LA's "Wrecking Crew" along with Leon Russell and many others, all superlative session musicians in the late 50s through the early 70s. One of the greatest country singers is shown in the audience, the remarkable Gene Watson. I enjoy all your videos. I appreciate your appreciation of good music. Peace!
When Fil started talking about Glen's storytelling and writing I immediately started checking the comments for someone to point out that John Hartford wrote Gentle on my mind. Rest in Peace River pilot John
glen was a brilliant picker , even at his lowest time with his illness he could still play like the legend he was , proving (i think) that talent comes from the soul NOT the mind
He was a member of the Wrecking Crew that was the ultimate studio musicians from the 60's and early 70's that went out on his own. One of probably 5 best guitarists of that Era. He played on Rock, Big Band and country. Sad to see his decline with that terrible disease that finally took him. He was a legend and will be dearly missed but at least we have the music to remind us and bring a smile and even a tear.
Glen was the top requested studio guitarist from the mid 60's thru mid 70's. He's played on a lot of top hits over the years, and most people never even knew!
"Glen was the top requested studio guitarist from the mid 60's thru mid 70's. " Maybe in Nashville, but that is an absurd idea as stated. He certainly wasn't "the top requested studio guitarist" in, for instance, the UK. Which, as you might be aware, is home to a disproportionately large % of the 'best' guitarists in popular music history.
Glenn Cambell when starting out played here in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA in a popular hole in the wall bar. I was toooo young, but my parents would go see him.
@@cathyg8702 You're unique and it's ok to like what you like (unless its hurting someone else). Peculiar that we live in an age where we're apologetic for appreciating something good about someone else, but no one apologises for being crass, expecting perfection in everything outside of themselves but finding fault with everything except themselves within.
@@cathyg8702 Don't worry, the Muppets brought out the best in many great musicians. BTW I can't watch Jim Henson's funeral without cutting some onions. Actually tons of onions.
I rarely leave comments. Only when I see something I think not only entertains but helps with an over all positive perspective. I had time to watch two of your videos, this one, and-the one with Roy. Both I had seen before. But I grew up in Arkansas where Glenn was born and have admired his talent all my life. Roy Orbison was my Dad’s favorite guitarists and a favorite of mine. As a man who grew up around music, (my dad, uncles, brothers, and myself are all singer songwriters) watching you and listening to your enthusiasm about these often forgotten guitar hero’s blows me away. I hope you reach a million more people with these videos. Great job. Cheers
What you say Rayce is spot on. Far too many negative comments on YT that are simply nasty, vindictive and totally unnecessary in a world that has enough already. I simply don't understand why people have to respond in that way. Is there not enough sadness in the world without even attempting to see the light?
I was a metalhead in the 80's and not into country at all....then I saw a TV show with Glen Campbell and Roy Clark trading solos on a bad-ass version of Ghost Riders In The Sky and my mind was blown. Glen was a beast.
Seen it, too. As great as Roy Clark was . . . Glen owned that performance. I put him right next to Chet Atkins. Other greats of that era included Jerry Reed and Jim Stafford. Much as I do not like them personally, Keith Urban and Vince Gill are among the best today. Why God chose to bless them so much . . . I'll probably never understand.
Part of the reason for that is shredding apparantly does not come across well on lighter styles of music. When you hear here what Glen can do and then hear his simplistic playing and solos on his radio hits, you realize he had to hold back for musical purposes. Kind of like how people say that Ringo gave the songs "exactly the drumming that the song needed."
Huge glen campbell fan and I dont even like country music. An amazing musician!. Thank you British Rock star dude for appreciating great talent, whatever the genre
All good - because what most folks don't understand is Glen was not necessarily a country musician - just more of a country person. His music (most not his - written by others like Jimmy Webb who was not in any way a country songwriter) was categorized as country, because they did not have a way to categorize music into sub genres back then. He also sang big band and played bluegrass and gypsy jazz as well. His singing in the style of singers like Frank Sinatra was amazing. And of course he played as a session player on all sorts of music - including rock and roll tracks during the sixties.
Yes and more than that. What he said - made sense. Made me see things in Glen Campbell that I had taken for granted. Made me appreciate Glen - and the legends he was sitting with that were playing with him and/or listening with more understanding than someone who is not a musician can really ever have. Now I need to go listen to Wings of Pegasus. You can open my eyes some more!
Love your analysis and insight. Very enriching and enjoyable. You're a true gentleman my British friend. It was very neat to see all those musicians together, what great synergy. 👍
John Hartford wrote "Gentle On My Mind" and back when The Glen Campbell Show was on the air, John often joined Glen on the show. John was an excellent banjo player and a wonderful songwriter. Together Glen and John were magic.
Yep, Roy is fantastic. All of those early country pickers had it down. The song you are talking about is Malaguena. Normally when it is played, it is finger picked, but Roy flat picks it which takes some serious stamina and co-ordination. What he does at the 1:50 mark is really impressive too! This is the clip you are referring to: ruclips.net/video/v5v4WQfOsrc/видео.html

Have you seen the video of him playing The William Tell Overture? At one point he has the pick between his thumb and pinky and his guitar on top of his head.
A real masterclass! Glen was so amazing and equally joyful. His joy lit up everyone around him like a Wichita Lineman. Plus he cut across genres and had national and worldwide appeal. Everything he touched had a smile on it. A real American musical superhero! Thanks for pointing out the specifics of his exceptional inimitable oeuvre!
I love watching Roy Clark watch Campbell - pure admiration of talent from another major talent - there really wasn't the professional jealousy among these guys the way you see with some of the old-school British rock musicians.
When I was us high school (note: I'm old now), my friend, who is a gifted amateur musician, remarked that Glen Campbell was the only person on Earth who could play a 12-string as if it were a 6-string. He had not been on my radar until then - I was studying classical music and just starting to listen to Chicago jazz and folk, back then. I took a listen and realized she knew exactly what she was talking about. When I think about this kind of talent, I also think about Gerry Mulligan, who played a bari sax like it was a little alto. These are the Masters. Thank you again, Fil.

Glen's songs are like old friends to me. Some artists, the BEST of them, give their music an effortless quality. People like Ray Charles, Roger Miller, Hank Williams, Nat King Cole and yes the truly great Glen Campbell.
Damn his vocal phrasing is brilliant. Great singer, great guitarist, was in True Grit etc, handsome and charming with amazing hair. The man has it all. Hats off to you for taking time to celebrate the man’s amazing talent.

@@pockynon ROFL, he didn't make it into the British book of smiles.
So true!
you bet check out sweet emotion nailed that Fil
In fact, It was hard to tell who was more excited, you or the guy sitting behind Glen Campbell.
Glen was on guitar for Sinatra’s Strangers in the Night.
@@georgebudimir7801That is Gene Watson behind Glen
Your smile while listening to the music is the best thing I’ve seen in a long time!

Yeah he's got that great genuine smile.
I surely agree, especially in these crazy times. I listen and watch these videos often when I'm feeling hopeless
But he’s British lol. Nicest smile/teeth on RUclips

This young guy is one of the most likeable people I've ever seen giving commentary on the internet. Very knowledgeable, very positive. Well done, sir!
Thanks!
Really? He mis-appropriated credit for the song-writing to Glen Campbell. This is bullshit. The song was written by Johnny Hartford.
From your response it would appear you missed that☺️
I agree! Fil's smile puts a smile on my face!
I grew up listening to Glenn Campbell and never really realized what an incredible talent he was. So nice to see such an intelligent and appreciative analysis. Kudos!
Thanks!
This song by Glenn, John Hartfords’, has gently been playing on my mind for 4 decades. He may be playing from high above in the skies, in a duet w/John, entertaining all the heavenly creatures forever. ♥️🤗
Agree wholeheartedly AVweb:)
Same here. I don't remember a time without Glen Campbell. Funny thing about the 60s turning into the 70s is that radio stations didn't always follow their format strictly. Campbell easily fit in on any genre of stations back then and nobody would bat an eye.
@@Ciscodays Wasn't he also with the Ventures at one point? i know he did a brief stint with the Beach Boys, filling in for Brian....i believe.

Damn straight Skippy
keep in mind, john wrote it, but elvis's interpretation of John's words, is LIGHT YEARS BETTER.
I'm glad you corrected the presenter (3:56). John Hartford wrote it indeed (and actually recorded it himself in the mid-60s).

This guy knows everything about music. Spectacular analysis. Really knows his music. Gets it on so many levels. Beautiful bruh!!!
Fil great review of my favorite Glen Campbell.
Great work!

Great comment
Wings of Pegasus, I'm not a musician, but I appreciate the artistry and the talent required to be a "solid" guitarist. You explain the art and the technical aspects of the music, the instrument and the artist(s) in a manner that is delightful for me to learn from you. From a non-musician, thank you.
Thanks!
I'll 2nd the motion. Fil not only knows what he's talking about......he's got the smooth, flowing presentation. Great analyses of different artists.
Glen's voice was so Golden that people overlooked what an incredible guitarist he was. Plus he made it all look so effortless. RIP Mr Campbell.
I was the Associate Director on that show...loved every minute of it

There’s an even better cut from that same show of Glen doing a spontaneous cover of Roy Orbison’s “Crying”. It’s just killer. It’s on the ‘tube.
One of the most remarkable things about Glen is that he doesn't read a note of music. He was simply blessed in abundance with a God given talent.

Yeah. Maybe they're not so stoned on drugs like the hard rockers.
@@RK807 country cats are worse than blues and rock guys. Just ask keith Richard's.

Watching you smile as you watched Glen and the boys was the second greatest thing about this video.

Thank-you for offering your talent to breakdown these musical and vocal skills, with such eloquence yet simplicity. Not only with Mr. Campbell, but with each artist you analyze. You are a gem.
Paraphrasing Merle Haggard, if ever there was a person who had too much talent, it was Glen Campbell. Thanks for acknowledging Glen the way you did.

Glen may have been the most under rated guitarist of all time. The musicians knew how good he was but the general public just didn't know.
Michael Stoneburg we knew
Part of the reason for that is shredding apparantly does not come across well on lighter styles of music. When you hear here what Glen can do and then hear his simplistic playing and solos on his radio hits, you realize he had to hold back for musical purposes. Kind of like how people say that Ringo gave the songs "exactly the drumming that the song needed."
Same goes with Jerry Reed, Roy Clark.

Isn't it nice to see and hear a young musician give a description of someone WITHOUT using profanity or vulgarity in their presentation!

Yes and more than that. What he said - made sense. Made me see things in Glen Campbell that I had taken for granted. Yep, Roy is fantastic. All of those early country pickers had it down. The song you are talking about is Malaguena. Normally when it is played, it is finger picked, but Roy flat picks it which takes some serious stamina and co-ordination. What he does at the 1:50 mark is really impressive too! This is the clip you are referring to: ruclips.net/video/v5v4WQfOsrc/видео.html
couldn't agree more - that clip is exceptional - Roy is one of the under rated greats ( his duets with Glenn Campbell are legendary too!!)
Yeah I saw that!
Trisha Urvan I was gonna suggest that too🤜🏻🤛🏻
You weren't kidding at all. Holy crap! We are not worthy.....
Love your total respect of glens ability on guitar, he truly was a MONSTER on guitar and really a complete musician!
I love how the other musicians cheered after Mr. Campbell's lead break. Thank you Phil for making me re-appreciate the greats. I'm sixty and was in a rock band in tne eighties and all these players inspired me at the time. Aloha!
I appreciate how detailed you are in breaking down what great guitar playing is made up of. I mostly play acoustic electric, so I can really identify with what you're were saying about how you have to make each note stand out so it doesn't just fade away. It is great to see a young guy like yourself show appreciation for other music styles even from past generations. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.
No problem!
YOU appreciate good music. You picked up on several subtle movements in this piece. Your joy is REFRESHING! Thank you for your comments. (I am an amateur banjo player.)

And excellent singer also...could play like 7 instruments and very proficient. I feel.blessed to grow up in his era of his show and following him until his death...please see that wrecking crew tube. You will.learn more than you knew. Played with the beach boys also....banjo was one of his talents also.
Have you seen the video of him playing The William Tell Overture? At one point he has the pick between his thumb and pinky and his guitar on top of his head.
no but I sure would like to....plz send me the link? ty
Glen is underrated as a guitarist. Should be in hall of fame!
The late great Glenn Campbell....
He will always be loved in this household.
No problem!
Absolutely , Roy Clark he is Definitely some one really worth taking a look at. Excellent analysis you couldn't have articulated it any better. 🤘👍
Will do!
Love this stuff! Fil always analyzeds great musicians, and he's so spot on...the sign of another great musician. Thanks!!!
Well done, sir. You have a wonderful demeanor and are interesting to listen to, and it's a joy to know you appreciate all music. This is the music I grew up with. I just subscribed to your channel.
Thanks!
When you have Roy Clark's complete attention and he intently watches you play, you're THAT good! Two of the legends! Thanks for (re)introducing the world to Glen Campbell, Fil...Love these vids!
Well done, it's not the genre, it's the natural ability. Often people don't see it, however you and many of the comments see it.
👍
Glen's songs are like old friends to me. I've lived a long time now and through it all Glen has been around, his voice reverberating through airports, train stations and waiting rooms or shopping for groceries, and I always find myself quietly humming along and maybe sharing the moment with a stranger, a little smile of recognition from a fellow Glen Campbell fan. Some artists, the BEST of them, give their music an effortless quality. People like Ray Charles, Roger Miller, Hank Williams, Nat King Cole and yes the truly great Glen Campbell.
Amen!
Damn his vocal phrasing is brilliant. Great singer, great guitarist, was in True Grit etc, handsome and charming with amazing hair. The man has it all. Hats off to you for taking time to celebrate the man’s amazing talent.
Amen!
Wichita Lineman is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
It's really great to see a younger person showing appreciation and having insights to the great musicians of my past. I grew up with such a wide variety of music on the radio and I miss it. Yeah, I'm old.
Also, Glen was with the Wrecking Crew for a bit. He didn't have the reading skills but made up for it with his intuitive talents.
Thanks for posting this vid!
