  • A little more boat motor conversion work here on the channel. I tried this 2,000 watt motor in an old Sears 5 hp shell. It worked but I wanted to see how it would perform in a bigger case. So, I found a 45 hp Sears outboard for $30 on FB Markeplace and did the build.

    Fun stuff.
    Thanks for taking a look!

Thanks for all of that info! awesome idea about the ebike conversion kits genius! Next video please give us some battery draw, gps speed, speed at different draws, how long will the battery last at that draw etc. Thats crack for us people who watch these kinds of video's :)

Thanks for your questions. It was a fun build. I've actually handed off the motor to a friend of mine but the rough numbers when I was using it was around a 40 amp draw at top speed; on the heavy fiberglass, deep V boat I was testing it on top speed was around 5 to 6 mph. Battery range and run time would be dependent on speed. A small reduction in speed would greatly expand range of course. On a light aluminum boat it would probably do very well.

Cool beans man , I was thinking about doing a conversation like this. 😊 Pulley stearing , that brings back some memories

Thanks for your comments! Fun project. And, yep, old school steering still works.

Looks great and great weather for splashing!
You need a huuuge electric motor for that thing to get her on plane! Nice job…

Those motors produce a lot of torque at the low to mid range of the rpm, a bigger prop helps to use that 2000 watts for efficiently. Gas outboards have high rpm output with the torque coming in at the higher rpm. BLDC or just DC motors can turn a big prop easily. Big prop, deeper angle. Paddle that water out of the way.

Love the design, very Stormtrooper-looking. What kind of speeds did you get compared to the 5 hp? Did the gears affect the speed?

Thanks for your comments. It does look Stormtrooper like. This outboard was pretty typical of most and had a 2:1 reduction ratio. So the top rpm would be cut in half, but in reality the motor can't really be run full on for long periods of time without more cooling. This motor was on a somewhat heavy, deep V, fiberglass boat and was pushing around 1,000 pounds. The 2,000 watt ebike motor is between 3 and 4 hp at best so top speed was around 5mph. On a lighter, flat bottom boat it would do far better.

Thanks for this! Great video and very much what I have been looking for.
I wonder what your thoughts are about this: sound/noise level - It seems like the immersed motors (Spirit 1.0) are much quieter than the Ebike-headed motor (which would make some sense.)

Top mounted electric motors are definitely louder. Motors mounted in the hub under the water are a joy to use.

Very cool! Could you link or mention the motor you bought on amazon? Thanks!
