Smart move on removing the oil injection. I had a marine mechanic that worked on boats for over 30 years tell me the same thing about failing oil injection on older units. Delete, and mix your fuel.

I just pop the carbs off automatically now on everything. I just put them in my ultrasonic cleaner. A little purple degreaser and something like lemishine for the dishwasher. It keeps you from getting water spots if you air dry and use tap water. The big one from Harbor Freight is amazing. I have only needed one rebuild kit since I got that. It was on a snowblower that had a crusted over choke flap. The parts were too pitted after a good cleaning. Ethanol gas just ruins stuff so fast lol.

couple things. the kill switch lanyard is not tehre, disconnect from the harness and try again. Second, any key switch in those boxes can be started with a screw driver if you just have to. The switch itself will have a two or three digit number that you can take to a dealer and get a new key. There are not very many different keys for them so there is always a chance a key you have from another similar will work. Now, for the compression. The need is not within ten percent it is 12. However you are right, it was setting so after running it for a while and some fogging spray and it may come right back. Change the waterpump impeller etc. My experience? 54 years as a marine mechanic and repair shop owner. Retired now. You do good work son, keep it up.

For my carb cleans, I went to Goodwill and bought a cheap aluminum cake pan. That way when I remove the bowl I dump out the leftover fuel and I can see what contaminates are in there. You can also use that fuel to scrub the exterior of the carb with an old toothbrush. Be sure and throw that toothbrush away when you get done though because it nearly impossible to get that taste off of there.

Love the videos! This outboard doesn't have VRO though. It is called OMS (Oil Metering System). OMS, which was introduced in 1993, was known to be very reliable and if the pump did fail it over oiled by default. As long as the tank is free of water and the sock is not blocked, it will run forever. I run them on all my engines. VRO and OMS get a bad wrap from the 1st couple years of VRO (which were the only problem years). OMC then went to VRO2, which would also over oil in the event of a failure. There were bad oil injection systems out there, such as Mercury with their plastic gears, however since VRO2 OMC's systems have been very reliable. Most blame the VRO or OMS when they score a cylinder when in reality that cylinder went lean due to a dirty carb. If the VRO or OMS would have failed with a no oil condition, all cylinders would be effected as the oil is mixed before the carbs. To each their own but there are a lot of myths out there, plus if you have to replace the fuel pump I don't blame anyone for converting due to the high price of a new VRO or OMS pump.

Mercury and Yamaha both introduced mechanical oil pumps in the early 80s. Around the same time OMC did. The main difference however, is the fact that they don't randomly fail and cause the outboards to randomly blow up like OMC's injection system did. There's absolutely no reason these VRO pumps should fail like they do and absolutely no reason we should have to delete them. The 2 other major outboard companies of the time were able to make their oil pumps extremely reliable. 1984, the year OMC introduced oil injection, is the year their quality control went to absolute shit and the year that started the company's downward spiral to bankruptcy.

Quick story about missing wrenches (AND PARTS) Had a huge job a few decades back where a youth group was having a summer camp. We took in their boats for complete refits and overhauls of the engines. One needed a complete rebuild. I had my crew doing the upholstery while I had the engine in the shop on the workbench. Nothing else there. Split it in half, machined the cylinders, assembled rods with .010 pistons and laid out the crank and every internal part. Turned around and that crankshaft was gone. Nobody was in the shop area but me. Everyone else was working their butts off. That crank was there and then poof...it was gone. We all looked for it. Around the buildings, everyone looked on and under that workbench and went through the shop. No place to be found. (N, NOBODY WAS MESSING WITH US).... We walked to the shop doors, everyone. still gone, you could see from the double doors everything on that damn table.... We started to do another search outside and I looked back again... it was sitting right on the table where I had laid it hours earlier... you tell me. WTH lol..... Kinda like the 1/2, 9/16 and 7/16 sockets and wrenches that just go poof and then appear someplace you swear you never went to lol.... Anyway... keep up the good stuff....
