This is my first video that I've seen of yours and I love it! The console on that boat looks great with all of the lights and switches. Brings back of alot of good memories. Thanks for sharing this!
Thank you so much! And I agree, they just don’t make them like they used to. Really appreciate you watching!!
New sub! Nice production and thanks for sharing the story.
That neighbor wants to go fishing! First trip fur him!
Really appreciate the sub and the kind words! And we are for sure gonna go fishing soon…
Very restorable. Great model for Stratos. Actually the boat that put Stratos and Earl Bentz first boat company in the forefront of bass fishing. They were popular!
It was a great boat, super fun to work on! Thanks for watching Kirk.
Really enjoying your content. Keep it up!

Just subbed and really loving these videos😮😮 I am definitely catching you on your way up because you are going to be big🙏🙏 I'm currently working on a 1990 Cajun center console with a 1989 Johnson 140 and have had it and worked on it for 20 years😁😁 currently my buddy and I are rebuilding it from the stringers up👌👌 please keep your videos coming and I love your editing work also👍👍😁😁
Saving this comment Fredo.. have huge plans for the channel and just really appreciate those words 🙏🏼

Thank you so man!! Really really appreciate that
Great content! Great Channel!

Nice job !!
Random video in my feed, I watch it, see you taking boat to my old stomping grounds (CJ Brown), immediately subscribe. Haven't fished it since 96, moved away. Been too busy fishing Florida. Neighborhood you live in looks really familiar too.
I really appreciate that! Hopefully I can move my operation down to Florida soon as well… but for now CJ Brown and Alum will have to do!! Hope you’ve been loving the south, and I really appreciate the sub 👍🏼
Good work, looking great
Thank you!!!
very nice job but more than 20 mins. All in all very nice work young man. Lots of good fishing to you!
Hah! Yes it took a bit more than 20 minutes… I was more referring to the video length 🤣 but thank you for the support! 🤝 🎣
What you talking about it took him 19:59 😂
Good stuff, Bro. What inline spark plug tester and compression tester do you recommend?
Thank you! And my recommendation would be as nice of one as you can afford… my compression gauge was $19 on Amazon and I haven’t had any issues! It may be reading a lower PSI than what it actually is but my main concern with compression is that the cylinders are even, and my cheap Amazon gauge does just that. Also for a spark plug tester I recommend the SINGARO Inline Spark Plug Tester on Amazon - it’s $6 (Dirt cheap) and never failed me! I like being able to see the spark through the light on it.
That Johnson GT was a great outboard, just cold natured. It always took 3 starts & then she ran like top! It was Crank, die then crank, die the. Crank, GO!!
Agreed! Great motor just takes some time…
Great stuff, do more please.
Thank you! Hoping for a new video tomorrow!
The best thing I have found for the boat stains and carpets is shaving cream Barbasol trust me works great
Just found your channel. Your diagnosing of the timing ring is why you have the boat and the original guy did not. Nice work.
I appreciate that! Love finding cheap stuff where the owner gives up…. Easy money!!
Epic man. In Germany boats like this dont rly exist or are super expensive.. one day i will get one ❤ Great Video bro keep doing this Its so sattisfying to Watch 🎉
Thank you so much!!!! 🇺🇸🤝 🇩🇪
Good job and lucky you 👍
Great video! You should make how-to videos labeled with what motor you are working on so that people googling their problems will find your solution!
Might have to do that! Thanks
Another cool vid. The amount of Johnson’s that need the timer base compared to the stator is unreal. Power pak, timer base, stator is how I check them.
Piece of advice, you should just stick with flipping motors bcuz the risk is far lower. I’m sure you’ve been burnt with transoms/floors in the past. Not worth the man hours.
Looks like you live up north where no saltwater is found. Lucky you. Good job
Haha yes no saltwater here! And I don’t buy boats to flip unless I have already checked the transom and floors for stability. If they’re bad I just don’t buy them! Have never had a boat project go south on me for something of that nature before. But I have wasted hours of driving only to find they were bad when i was told they weren’t… but great advice and I appreciate your support!
Did you ever get it up on plane? Buddy of mine had that exact boat, back in the day...really good piece of equipment.
We did, the day we took it out (hard to tell) was 25 mph winds and massive chop… was trying to spare my spine 😂
Great Channel 🤘
Thank you!!
Something I’ve done before is use a drill to spin the shaft on the impeller to insure that it’s pumping water 😊
Well earned 2k!
Have you ever asked your neighbor to go fishing? He might be hinting for it.
Haha for sure we’re going to need to hit the lake!
One hell of an engine, love those things. You needed some heat on the crank taper.
I'm glad you didn't splash it with crapped-out carbs, a dead cylinder would've killed it.
Agreed!!
That water pump absolutely needed to be changed anyway. You should not feel like you wasted time doing it just because the thermostat was stuck too.
Yeah absolutely agree! Just makes you feel dumb when you always vow to check the easy stuff first then don’t listen to your own rules 🤣
What’d ya do with the old seats? Looking for Stratos seats and would be willing to take those off your hands!
They were so chewed up from mice and the elements I ended up just throwing them away unfortunately.. I always prefer to restore what’s savable but these were really far gone
make sure to check the fuel lines also. the oem marine lines come with a protective internal membrane that breaks down and deteriorates over time.
Correct me if I am wrong, but is it not Attwood sold at Walmart that separates and stops fuel from flowing. If the black line from Napa works in a 58 year old Mustang it sure as sh#t works on 60hp Merc. I do my stone cold best to never by anything from Attwood.
@@TheNutzandBoltz yeah, I also went with the Napa route.
I can't say enough good things about CDI, I had a fairly new regulator/ rectifier burn up, which caused damage to the wiring harnesses, power pack, stator & timing base.
CDI replaced it all for no cost.
Top notch customer service, great quality, and so much more affordable than OEM. Love CDI!
Hey man, love your video.
I have a very similar engine it’s a 1989 Evinrude XP150 V6 , I’m only getting spark to half of the engine, I flipped coils and coils are fine.
Only 3/6 cylinders getting spark is there something synonymous with these engines.
I appreciate that! Check the below link: this is the holy grail for outboard spark troubleshooting and I use it for all of my engines.

Thanks for watching Kenneth! I got them on Amazon, check the link below 👍🏼

A good upholstery shop can re do any seat and it’s much better than the production seat you can buy online and way better materials. I had all of mine redone for $450
Man, you found a good bones boat! Awesome work on getting it going. Where did you learn your engine skills? Impressive.
Thank you so much! And for the most part just RUclips university 🤣. Over the years you just encounter 1 problem after another, and thankfully the internet is full of wise and knowledgeable people that love sharing their skills with others, and you can really learn a lot from watching people on RUclips or reading online. Also, just trying stuff myself and making a whole bunch of mistakes. Really appreciate you watching and thank you for the compliment
@@BoatBusters I would buy that boat, what state? Price?
@@cappystrano1 this one’s been sold for a while unfortunately I’m sorry!
Nice video! I would rather hear the motor than music though
I have a 1990 stratos 285 pro as well, same motor, i would definitely recommend ordering only oem electronics for that motor.
I normally do however for electrical components I have had very good luck with CDI and they are a lot more affordable.. but I do agree with you OEM is always best if you can afford it!
I understand I had great luck with cdi with Mercury and yamaha, but for some reason these gt175 crossfire are very finicky with cdi, everytime I swapped out a cdi to oem my problem was fixed.
@@Gramskee that’s good insight - I appreciate it!
I just got a Stratos boat. The wiring is horrible on these boats but everything else is awesome. I have to fix a bunch of wires that got chewed by squirrels
They definitely do not make them easy to work on do they… always dread electrical work on Stratos boats 😂
Where do you live? I have a 1993 Stratos 290 SF bass and ski boat with a 200HP Johnson V6. My dad bought it new and then I bought from him. Learning to do some of my own maintenance but some items scare me. Do you have, or know where to find good references for my boat and motor?
I’m up in ohio! And good for you taking the step to learn to work on your own engine! No need to be scared. They look intimidating but the more you learn about them it becomes pretty easy! As far as references there will be a RUclips video out there showing you exactly how to do any job to your motor that you need to do 99% of the time. If your dad still has the owners manual that will really be the only resource you will ever need - you can buy one for your motor on eBay as well. Also feel free to DM me on instagram if you need help on anything specific, I’m always here as a resource for my RUclips supporters! Best of luck 🤝
My first boat had almost as many problems, it was a 1977 tri hull with a 70 HP Johnson, the motor was a new replacement, but was sitting for 8 years unused, I acquired it in about 2001 (before youtube) , it took me 6 months to get it running and asking a boat expert that was a friend. Water Pump issues, green gunk in the float bowls was the extent of it. Just think, with youtube you can fix things alot faster.
You absolutely can! I am a certified RUclips-taught mechanic. Everything I know is thanks to the old guys in RUclips that were willing to press record and teach
from where i'm from, this would be at least double the price rn AT LEAST. do you negotiate on marketplace?
Yeah marketplace accounts for about 99% of stuff I buy!
Don't forget to empty the old dirty gas in the tank
I did don’t worry!!
That neighbor is worth his weight in gold!

Cuts are a bit much in my opinion but good video 👍 I like the added funny bruh! Lol
I appreciate the feedback! Trying to find the balance between too slow of pace and too many cuts is hard 😅 but I’ll get better!
What you did with the bottom then end you only help the guy out that’s gonna buy it so that’s pretty cool
Yeah, it did need to be done anyways, so I’m glad I did it. Just the frustration of not checking simple stuff first when diagnosing 🤣
@@BoatBusters I get what you mean Brother
How do u legally put a found boat in the water somewhere ? I have a old hawk bass boat that I don’t have any paperwork to. It’s been sitting in the woods for years now bc I have no registration to get it legal for Louisiana water ways
I’m not in Louisiana so I really don’t know any of their title laws - however it’s usually a massive pain of a process. Typically you will need a court order to register the boat and then obtain title. I would imagine if you called your local title office they can instruct you on the exact process for getting registration so then you can take that registration and get a title! Sorry I couldn’t be much more helpful on this one
14:30 Over the years I have tried to train myself when diagnosing something, K.I.S.S., and check the obvious stuff 1st. Sometimes I remember, sometimes I don't. :)
Ah yes my fathers voice drilled into my brain “keep it simple stupid!!!” 😂
@@BoatBusters and that my father also taught me the theory. 🤣
What seats did you put in I have a 90 201 that needs new ones
Leader Accessories is the brand name I got them on Amazon 👍🏼
Does it cost money to register and insurance the boat beg it's re sold?
Good question! Boats in my state are not required to have insurance. It’s always a good idea to have it, and I would on all personal boats I use regularly. However I do not insure boats that I’m flipping. The boat does need registration to be on the water. They’re stickers and they’re about $30 and good for 3 years at a time. Most boats I flip have good registration, if not then I just pay up and get it registered. The expensive part in my state is the title transfer process. Boats longer than 14 ft and outboards greater than 10 horsepower need legal titles. Getting them notarized and transferred required you to pay tax on the purchase price of each!
Just enough information to make me forget I know nothing about boats and do something I’ll regret sometime down the road. Other than that great video.
Barbosal shaving cream is great for cleaning the carpet
Never heard of that before! Definitely will be trying - thanks!

8:25, Gasoline can turn to a varnish when it sits for years.
Well you surpassed the 20 min mark long long ago!😂
🤣🤣 true
It would be great if you could walk through how you link and synced the carbs and set the timing after you took everything apart. I’m guessing at minimum you had to sync the carbs. I’ve heard that timing should be redone when replacing the timer base.
Also if you could walk through how you did the lower unit shift bolt, that is a beast of a bolt and takes very fine finesse. You should have done that with the carbs off, would have been so much easier!
Was replacing the T stats hard or just pop the caps off and swap out?
And don’t use a gear puller on the flywheel, use the correct puller, you don’t want to end up like me with a cracked flywheel! That was a sad day for me, trying to find another one was a mess. Good luck with the sale!
I did sync the carbs- did not adjust any timing. There is a key on the crankshaft and a notch in the flywheel so the timing should not change / it will always return in the same place it left. The lower unit shift bolt was a beast 😂 and yes I wish I did it with the carbs off but hindsight is 20/20 haha.. I used my little 4 prong nut retriever to get the bolt barely threaded and a 3 foot long screwdriver to turn it in. T stats were incredibly easy, just pop the caps off and swap them. And yes I did use the correct gear puller and admitted my fault the second go around haha!
@@BoatBusters What guide did you follow to sync the carbs? I have heard due to differences in the timer bases that timing need to be verified but it's probably ok. I hear ya on that bolt, I've done it a couple times and there's just no good way to do it! Ill probably try to do my T stats this summer at some point then, sounds like good preventative maintenance. I'm glad you didnt damage your flywheel, that would of been a bad day, dont ask me how I know haha.
Did yoy check the compression before you bought it?
Yes I did, on these big boat flips I’ll never buy without checking it first. Smaller outboards I don’t always bring my gauge though, I usually have a good feel for the compression just by pulling the rope start!
Pro tip smack the arbor of the puller with a mini sledge next time

How much time did it take you to do all this work? Earned per hour = ?
Good question! Obviously parts take time to be delivered when I can’t buy them at a local shop so there are days where I don’t touch the project because I can’t move forward without them. Also this has been a lifelong hobby so labor hours may get a little stretched by me just bumping music in the garage and getting distracted… 😂 total time from purchase to sale for this one was about 2 weeks, but I’d say head down working / real labor hours maybe 15-20. It would be far less than 2 weeks, but I have a full time 40hr / week day job so I really only have evening hours and weekends to do this stuff right now. So with $2,000 profit I made roughly $100-135 per labor hour for this project. Sometimes I get lucky and find a great deal that requires way less work and that $ per hour number goes way up. All depends really! But getting paid to do what you love, even if only a little, is always the best feeling.
Always wear a life jacket for the first time in the water. In fact it's better every time.
Nice life jacket
Where are you buying your parts from?
It depends. There’s a lot of OEM and CDI parts on Amazon. When the part I need is on Amazon, I usually order there just because of shipping time and prime rewards. When Amazon doesn’t have what I need, I buy from Crowley Marine, Marine Engine . com , or eBay.. whichever one is cheapest!
Springfield huh cool
What product did you use to clean the carpet?
I use chemical guys carpet stain remover - diluted with water
@@BoatBusters Tks. Enjoyed the video and subscribed to your channel.
@@fishingfanatic1 I really appreciate that!!
Quick question why didn't you have to time it. I thought after pulling the fly wheel you have to retime and link and sync
This is a good question! The flywheel on this engine can only be put back onto the crankshaft in one spot. There is a notch inside the flywheel and on the crankshaft that prevents it from being placed in any other spot than exactly where you took it off. Therefore not necessary to touch any timing components. The only timing adjustment I make outside of ensuring carb butterflies are even is setting the proper idle RPM speed.
@@BoatBusters so as long as you don't take the key out of the notch you should be fine? I have to replace the timer base on my Johnson 115 also
@@DragginLineOutdoors my understanding has always been if the flywheel and shaft are oriented in the same way they came off, and no other adjustments were made, you can remove the flywheel and put it back on without issue. I have done this a hundred times and have not had to re-time any of my outboards for top performance. But again, I am only an amateur mechanic with decent experience but I have no license or formal education so maybe someone that knows the OEM process could help answer that
@@BoatBusters ok, good to know... Cause I was dreading the whole timing part cause there is a lot involved in it
@@DragginLineOutdoors it’s not fun! I would definitely not get into any timer base jobs if you are not prepared to re-time the motor if you have to. You just never know what could get bumped around or finnicked with during the job. Luckily in my case the motor ran great and RPMs were perfect but just no way of knowing for sure if your project will have the same results. I wish you the best of luck though!
I dont understand how there still isnt a bullet proof boat engine in 2024 that is reasonably priced. Like a simple design.
Same thing they’re doing with cars and trucks… unnecessary gizmos and gadgets that make it more expensive and just triples the amount of parts that could break…. Give me an old 2 stroke all day long!
The new 4-strokes are extremely durable when cared for, seen Yami's with 12k hours on them.
@@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 couldn’t agree more! Yamahas are the Toyotas of outboards… they run forever!
Awesome mechanical work except for the assault you did on that poor flywheel. Charges have been filed. 😂 on another note ditch that chemical guys stuff. Watch some detailing videos and you will find more effective and cheaper products.
🤣🤣🤣 the flywheel definitely didn’t deserve that… but thanks for the detailing tip! - you have any recommendations on a better product?

Absolutely man, going to get him out soon and make a video!
dude, unlike mercury, omc outboards do not matter what gear you are in. Just leave the lower on and use needle nose pliers to move the shift shaft up or down but even easier is just shift the control to neutral.... the bolt does suck, i learned long ago to do the water-pump while carbs are off. that makes it all simple.:-).. oh... my experience? 52 years as a marine mechanic and shop owner.
The carburetor piece is great advice! However in my case and the tools available to me I just was unable to get the bolt back in without the shift rod being in reverse and I couldn’t get it to shift up with pliers… annoying - but not too hard to just pull the lower unit and put it right back in 👍🏼 as an amateur marine mechanic I know enough to fix most issues on these motors - but to hear some of those tips from the industry pros like you is always greatly appreciated!
