  • This is the riskiest AND MOST EXPENSIVE purchase I have ever made! After selling the Sea Ray and searching for months for an old sport fish style boat (Bertram, Hatteras, Post, Viking, Tiara, Cabo, Jersey etc) this Pursuit popped back up on the market for 100K less than its previous listed price... Watch the video to find out why! This could be the best or worst decision I've ever made...
    Welcome to Boat Restoration by Ben! This is a channel based around all things boat and yacht restoration related. I work full time in the marine industry and when I'm not at work, I'm currently restoring my one of a kind 1992 Sea Ray 380 Sun Sport. This is my 12th boat project! From $100 boats to 60 year old relics, I started small and worked my way up. Despite my best judgement, I buy boats that need A LOT of work and fix them up myself. I grew up boating at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, went to school to become an engineer, worked at John Deere for 5 years, and then decided to give it all up to pursue my dream to work in the recreational boat industry. Now having since moved to the Chesapeake Bay area, my mission is to share with the world my love and passion for mechanics and wrenching through my marine projects all while teaching you how to enjoy boats on a budget. I hope you Like these videos and please don't forget to Subscribe! Cheers, Ben.

    Ben, I was the previous owner of this Pursuit. Glad you are the new owner and that you are enjoying her as much as I did. The green Awlgrip paint job was done by Jersey Cape Yachts in 2014. I had to sell the boat due to illness, glad to see her floating again.

    Ben, A tad of advice, if you have to do the same hole patch again. There is a easier way just take a lath of fibergalass batten or lexan highly polish on one side and screw it on the outside with 5200. shiny side in. Upon arrival take out your interior and grind back the usual tapers and the self tapper threads with care. Gelcoat the polished batten, apply 2 ;layers of finishing cloth. Remove the Batten, prepare the inside to accept the correct spec lam schedule vacuum in correct laminate and core schedule. On the outside countersink and fill screw holes and profile repair. If you do it right there is hardly any sanding on the outside of the hull. Also if your last laminate on the inside is sized to fit between frames etc, just the normal heavy interior gelcoat will mask the repair. As a retired boatbuilder I've used this process where possible for decades. Good luck.

    Very nice boat. Pursuit (and Tiara) were founded by Leon Slikkers, and his boats were noted for their perfect tooling. Good quality build, although an older Pursuit like yours still used wood-covered stringers which were far from ideal. Balsa coring was great unless the caulking around through-hulls, cleats and other areas where the core was penetrated was not done right. Delamination can become a very expensive catastrophe -- a friend had to strip the entire gel coat of his 47-foot trawler yacht and spend untold amounts of money having the core removed and the whole thing redone. Looking forward to future videos detailing the complete restoration.

    Living on the east coast I've found so many boats that owners just let sit for years. They buy them and then realize the upkeep is beyond what they expected, along with massive depreciation deals are always made so they can just get rid of them. The boating season is negligible depending on the person. That boat is simply awesome but what surprises me is how this happened. Pursuits have always been great boats in my eyes but as center consoles. I'm glad I've found this and will follow your rebuild.

    • @slynn5138
      @slynn5138 4 месяца назад

      He explained how this happened. The thru-hull up at the bow failed. Thus, allowing water from the anchor locker to seep into the hull; eventually causing wood rot and fiberglass delamination.

    I’m an old Chesapeake Bay guy, having grown up on the bay fishing and cruising with my father and grandfather. When I got out of college I bought a few boats and my last boat was docked in Middle River, in a huge marina right near the mouth of the river. I used to like to spend afternoons at Heart/Miller Islands, lying around and puttering on my boats. After law school I immigrated to Florida towing a little cuddy cabin Winner brand boat I had rebuilt from the ground up.

    • @jasoncoleman8133
      @jasoncoleman8133 6 месяцев назад

      Those Winners are damn good boats. If I'm remembering correctly, they were the first company to build all composite/fiberglass with no wood. I believe they used a very unique and super strong honeycomb design. I almost scooped up a 24 ft walk-around a couple years ago.

    The boat was originally forest green from the factory. It oxidized and faded from the sun and it was not cared for until I purchased it in 2007. I just had the ac and the refrigerator replaced in 2021 and then I had double pulmonary embolisms and I was forced to sell the boat. The turbo was also replaced on the starboard engine. You are smoking because you need to get the rpm’s up to 1500 and then throttle up. That will drastically reduce the soot issue. Port turbo is not as strong as the starboard due to age.

    • @BoatRestorationByBen
      @BoatRestorationByBen  4 месяца назад +1

      Im sorry to hear that. Well I’m glad I can continue to care for her and fix her up again. Funny you mention the smoking issue. I finally figured the 1500 rpm trick. Boy does it make a difference! Cleaning the port Turbo helped out a lot too!

    I've been looking at the Pursuit 2470's (center console) and nowhere on the Internet could I find an answer as to when they stopped using wood. I called Pursuit and asked them. The answer was never. Much like Parker they still use wood in pretty much everything except the stringers. They say they encapsulate everything, but it all depends on who owned it and how well they seal the holes they make. Worth it, those boats are dead sexy. Yours looks really homey.

    • @BoatRestorationByBen
      @BoatRestorationByBen  7 месяцев назад

Got luck the explosion blew a four inch square out of end of battery and hit my foot, acid spray up my leg, no eyes ! Watch the water lines to genset ,they loop all the way around one engine and get kinked , at least on the gas set up.

    Hey Ben, WilsonYahts in Deale MD has a nice old Sportfisher with Diesels for a decent price the boat was owned by 2 good ole boys that soda blasted the hull down to GelCoat did all the Blister repairs and barrier coats ect those boys had her on the hard for a few years and didn’t skimp on putting her back together. i know they had her running great and kind of ran out of steam on Interior build out those guys are bachelors and it wasn’t a priority to fancy the Interior up. they had a working head ,makeshift galley and so on one of the two guys had previously worked at a local Marina and i know he was a good mechanic why ? cause my last boat was Completely repowered by the previous owner and he did all the work btw those motors are still in my old boat that’s been out of my Ownership for over 10 years last i saw that boat inMaryland that Chris Wilson is Brokering the guys. we’re running it on large tanks on the deck to dial in the Engines as they did not trust the factory tanks ? Ironically i actually know the original Owner of that boat it was. a little too much for him at that time financially and Upkeep

    You seemed to have got a real good find. The most costly parts are all working fine. Any boats 20 year old will have some hull issues.

    Got to old to do another project boat and made up my mind last year to not start any new projects until al existing projects are complete. It had been a good plan. It's ok to watch your project tho.

    Worth the purchase for the free rods and reels in the V-Berth. Your bold endeavor has earned my subscription sir.
    Hey Sir, I lived and boated the Chesapeake my entire life but have been in South Texas for the last 20+ years. Is Harris Crab House still open. I used to love that Cream of Crab soup after a cold day of fishing.

    Hole you started the engines and generator a d cha ged the oil and fuel filters plus got a supply of filters. Get spare bilge pumps, 2 auto with alarms.
    I always did that and ran boat around area a d changed filters before ferrying boats in Hawaii where there is lots of water and NO tow service and few harbors. Can you use 7/16 rigid foam with glass cloth to to replace the balsa?
    Nice boat, much good luck.

    Jersey Egg is my sweet spot, but I never had the right one cross my path in my budget. Wanted something like yours but from here. It happened with something close but different. Not one even around anymore up here.

    Curious as to why you didn't do this while I was still on the hard before you dropped it in the water

      Yeah I don't think money has anything to do with it considering before he bought the boat it was already on the hard so whoever paid for the winter storage, picked up that bill

      Likely so that the boat was in its natural position when performing the repair. Just a guess

    Beautiful boat. Can you provide some background on that type of repair? I am wondering why re-glassing it wasn't an option.
