After EQ, I am curious if the presence on the amp was turned down a bit it would remove that excessive scratchy freq. I presume it depends on what freq the presence is at. Sounds great !!

I used to have a Pittbull UL half stack with the fatbottom 4x12. In the room it was a similar experience.. It sounded sort of fizzy and not all that impressive but as soon as you started jamming with a drummer all those weird sizzly highs disappeared behind the cymbals and you were left with this absolutely massive tone with lots of punch in the lows and and chords roared.

It's always amazing how a low-pass filter can transform a tone, although it shouldn't be surprising given how important filters are to synths. It would be cool to get really nerdy and have a custom built cabinet that had sliding sides so you could really hone in on the optimum size and shape for testing individual speakers.

It's the dark horse in the entire line up! Super percussive harmonic as a MOFO & covers so much sonic territory! The cleans to be had on both dirty channels are out of this world! Chicken pickin' on a Tele to absolute mayhem on your baritone. I sold my vh4 due to the CL100! I would love to see your reaction the 1st time you plug into the CL100 w/Fatbottom P50E loaded cab!!

Weber speakers deserve a video. I bought a used 4x12 avatar cab to keep at the rehearsal spot. I built a custom cab with 2 2002 vintage 30's and 2 creamback 65's and I didn't want to lug it back and forth. The avatar 4x12 was surprisingly awesome. It's loaded with 8ohm ceramic Silver Bell's with heavy doping. Weber is a company I didn't pay much attention to. Now I plan on picking up a pair of Gray Wolf's and Blue Dog's. Weber makes amazing speakers with their own distinctive voice. There's a lot of videos of people playing blues or classic rock but they tend to be overlooked when it comes to metal. I know Emperor Cabs have used a lot of Weber speakers in their cabs and those sound fantastic.

It's definitely a cool speaker! Back in the day, all the guitar forums would say to get the most out of a Fryette/VHT head, you had to get a Fryette/VHT cab with these speakers. I think Unearth's album "III: In the Eyes of Fire" used these as well.
I had a D120h with a 4x12 Deliverance cab and blew half of the P50e's by running the amp at 3 with the mids cranked over several months. Never quite understood how I managed that with the wattage ratings. Had to get V30's to replace it as the P50e's were unavailable at the time.

My plan right now is to replace 2 P50E's with DV77's and i have already tried with blending some IR's of this combo and i think it's great. So i can't wait to test it IRL, will be sharing my results in the Kohle discord of course :)

It’s a sorta well UNknown fact that the fat bottom cabinet and p50e were partially responsible for the legendary metalcore record “the end of heartache” by Killswitch engage. The setup was a 5150 into the fat bottom p50e loaded cab, and a framus dragon into a mesa traditional recto cab. Mics were an sm57 and an (original) akg c3000 blended. By the way it would be cool to see you do a video on the akg c3000 blending with an sm57, but be careful because the thing was reinvented like 3 times and just because it says akg c3000 on the name tag does not mean it’s the same mic as the late 90s/early 2000’s.
Sources: my first hand convos with joel and Adam and also you can find andy sneep confirming some of these facts on his old forum.
Edit: A couple of years ago I finally got ahold of a p50e loaded vht fat bottom cab and with my 5150 it sounded AWESOME. But if you’re jamming in a room with the cab you kinda have to dime both the resonance and the low end control on the 5150 (probably due to the cabinet being front loaded). And when I mic’d it up (cab was from 2005 and speakers were broken in) I did a lot of the same eq as yourself. Mine may have even been worse than your brand new speaker. Cheers and thanks for covering this topic!

You can also use a 16 ohm speaker with 8’s if you set it up as a 3x12. 2 8’s in series, those in parallel with the 16. Load ends up an 8ohm.

8:40 I absolutely love the V30 combined with the P50. By itself, the P50 sounded too tinny to me; not enough bark in the low end. Combined with the V30 to get that saturated but controlled, high-gain sound lets them both shine.

You're right man, when you switched back to the v30, it almost sounded phasey or something! I bet with the right settings, this Fryette speaker would be GREAT for single note leads. Two 16 ohms in parallel in a 2x12 cab gives you 8 ohms. I love 2x12's for leads, mixed with 4x12's on rhythm. Cuts through nicely, and fits right in the mix, with less eq on the bottom sometimes. Is the P50 a 50 watt? It maybe also might take a little more ass behind it to get it moving like a V30, dunno. Less sensitivity. I bet cranked a little harder than the v30, it gets even a little better? I might try this Fryette speaker. Sounds real nice. Good solid mids after your handy eq work. Nice video as always, and thanks for the tip. Appreciate you man!

I recently bought an old Peavey cab it was loaded with Eminence "black dot" 12" speakers. I guess these were pretty popular in the 70's. I can't find much info on them. But they sound great. Because of your videos I've been thinking about loading the bottom half of the cab with another Eminence. I was leaning towards the DV-77's because the IR pack was great. But now I'm thinking about grabbing some of these. Also I picked up another cab in the deal. An old Peavey Butcher cab. It's loaded with Celestion GT-K85's. Brother! grab a pair if you can! These fucking rule! I play death metal and stoner/doom in low tunings. These destroy my V30's, Greenbacks and Creambacks. Who would have known higher an output rating just sounds better with heavy guitars.

Hmm I really wanted to like this speaker when I was using it. It's thick low end is awesome but it always sounded too distant and honky for my taste, no matter which mic setup I used. It needed a lot of eqing to cut through the mix. Ended using DV77 IRs instead which are much more mix friendly imo. But since I own a deliverance head, I think I'll have to give this speaker a second chance. Would love to hear how it would sound on it's own in a mix.

Can you test Celestion BN12-300S in guitar cabs in context of metal with high gain guitar and baritone tones? They're famous online for being designed as bass speakers but sounding really good with guitars due to how they're voiced. I emailed Celestion and they said you can even safely use them in open cabs using bass guitar and they won't get damaged, signed by Dr. Decibel and that they would recommend it if you want to be able to use the same cab for bass and for guitar, or if you have a baritone, an 8-string, etc. and that whether I use a ported cab, a closed/sealed cab or an open one it will just affect the tone, how much low end there is, but no matter the cab it should sound good with lead guitar tones and also withstand the excursion of a bass guitar and hence the recommendation for baritones or setups that are for both guitars and bases and so on. Form what I found online it is a bit less coloured, flatter than typical guitar speakers, but more mid bumped than typical bass speakers. Some people say that makes them a great alternative to FRFR to use a tube power amp and a cab with these instead that it will sound better but will still replicate well the nature whatever the sims are trying to simulate without changing the nature of the sound, which makes me also wonder responsive these would be to the EQ in a regular tube amp, and also how much an extra EQ in the effects loop would do to affect their sound with these speakers. But yeah most importantly I would be interested in just how good they perform with high gain and low tuned guitars/baritones in different types of cabs (closed, semi-open, open, 2x12, 4x12, etc.).

I'm waiting for a company to make a 3x12 cab that allows you to mix and match Ohm ratings. 2x16 Ohm + 1x8 Ohm for either 4 or 16 Ohms, or 2x8 Ohm + 1x16 Ohm = 8 Ohms, 2x8 Ohm + 1x4 Ohm = 8 Ohms, 2x4 Ohm + 8 Ohm = 4 or 16 Ohms, etc. It would also allow for mixing and matching of speakers with very different Ohm and Wattage ratings without wasting headroom, or for maximized headroom on a speaker cone you don't want to break up paired with one you do want to break up. And, if it allowed for 2+1 asymmetric stereo, you could run two solid state amps with different optimal wattage output ratings and blend them in the same cab, or intentionally have a pair of speakers for one amp tone and the other speaker for your other amp tone; I think that would be great for chainsaw blending. You could use an 4 Ohm 150 Watt Texas Heat, and then pair it in series with two 70 Watt 8 Ohm DV-77's in parallel, with a real world combined wattage handling of 280 Watts at 8 Ohms. You could likewise do the same with a 16 Ohm Man-O-War in parallel with a series pair of Private Jack and Guit-Fiddle at 8 Ohms apiece, and have an 8 Ohm max load of 200 Watts.
For the example here in your video, a single 50 W, 16 Ohm speaker could easily be wired parallel to a paired series with two 25 or 30 W speakers, or two 50 Watt, 16 Ohm speakers could be wired in parallel, than that paired with a single 60, 70, or 75 Watt speaker at 8 Ohms in series.
Some of these speakers have VASTLY different Wattage handling, and not everyone wants to lug around multiple cabs to gigs or recording sessions. It's easier to do math and not lug heavy ass shit around. The only thing that should be heavy and brutal is the music.

I hate that some speakers can only handle such small wattage, and you have to combine multiples of them at weird Ohm ratings to make them usable with higher wattage amps. Solid state amps can easily crank out 50, 60, 75, or 100 Watts without weighing a ton. I don't want to carry a 4x12 and a high wattage 1x12 for my tone blending rig all the time.

Most of my speakers sound best when using lots of gain/distortion EQ'd with Bass boosted , mids scooped and the screechy highs chopped off. since V30s have more of the upper mid "best " sound of the guitar strings to start with, you have more/different EQ options. Weren't guitar speakers originally made to go through a tube amp into a clean sounding cabinet for the old '50s fender twin twangy tone? That's great for clearly cutting through a full band where a Fat guitar tone would be swallowed by the organ and other instruments and the same mid-range sound range. Heavy rock guitar and heavy metals tone is a whole other animal entirely made to rock your bones and organs- not ice pick stab you in the ear. And then there's all the deaf guitarists that have too many highs cuz they can't hear them anymore proceeding to deafen their audience with the same painful highs. Play loud and proud more gain less pain.!

  • @vintagepearlguitars
    @vintagepearlguitars 4 месяца назад

It would have been interesting to EQ the speaker in a way to get it as close to the V30 as possible. You cut too much highs and upper mids for that. It's not really a comparison of two speakers, but rather an example of how you can tailor sounds with an EQ (which works very well with distorted electric guitars).
With the signals as similar as possible, you would probably hear that the speaker has a nicer midrange. But the way you did it, it's guesswork.

RAW V30 wins, EQ'd the freyette is fat and has this depth in the midrange that sounds more 3 dimensional, the v30 is probably more cutting but for slower heavier stuff (not thrash or technical death metal) I think its a winner, and given that Freyette amps seem to be more the hard rock camp than the tight metal camp, this makes sense and I am sure suits a Pitbull very well.
