I can’t believe you left out The Columbia restaurant’s Cuban sandwich! They are the oldest Spanish restaurants in the U.S. and make one of the best Cubans! You need to come back and visit when we have our annual Cuban sandwich festival.

Brocato's used to "press" the Cuban sandwiches, but I think it was time consuming and at lunch time and now they put them in a over to heat only. They do have a decent Cuban and the Devil crabs are probably the best around ! La Segunda Bakery makes a great Cuban sandwich and they do press it. Never been to West Tampa Sandwich Shop, but hearing and seeing they baste the bread with honey ??? Honey does not belong on a Cuban Sandwich and neither does lettuce and tomato. But Tampa is the originator of the Cuban Sandwich and no other city will ever claim that or make a better one.

Will just say that no Cuban can be considered "Traditional", IF it omits salami in its build. The full build of roast pork (SLICED, not shredded!), ham, Swiss, salami, mustard and sour pickles is THE ORIGINAL way to have a Cuban. Any other way? You're just not having it right.
Also, you really said it right, you have BARELY scratched the surface of how many GREAT Cubans there are in Tampa/St. Pete!
A few I can name that you didn't feature: Wright's Gourmet on Dale Mabry. Interbay Meat Market (the GREEN STORE!) on Interbay Blvd. Columbia Restaurant (As old as La Segunda, but just as fantastic!) in Ybor! Even our local Publix Deli can make a descent Cuban in a pinch, if you can't get to any of the others named here.
In Memorandum for some lost gems that must be mentioned: Silver Ring Cafe, Victoria's Sandwich Shop (just recently, the owner passed away), and The Stone Soup Co. (Just tried them last year, but they closed operations this past spring).

The Tampa Cuban has a great history of the immigrants that worked in the cigar factories.
The ham because of the Spanish, the salami because of the Italians, roast pork and bread-Cubans, the mustard and pickles-the Germans, the Swiss cheese denotes the "melting pot" that has been Tampa. I think that if you had gone to the Columbia or some little mom and pop store you might have gotten a better taste of what a true Cuban. Above all else a true Cuban DOSE NOT have mayo, lettuce or tomato. You can't have a true Cuban without the bread, which can be hard to get outside of Florida. The only difference between Cuban and regular bread is that Cuban is made with lard. The palm frond on the top is optional if you can't get then original.

Lettuce and tomato on a cubano is a hard NO ❌! You don’t put lettuce and tomato on a Philly cheese steak and likewise it doesn’t belong on a cubano.

It is silly that Obama added lettuce and tomato .... especially when you consider that you can't GET ketchup at MANY Chicago hat dog joints. To them, it's about local tradition. So, IMHO, he should have tried it Tampa stylee. But, to each his own, it's his loss. As for the joints you tried, most are loved by those that go to them, naturally. And seeing as how they have been around so long ... the story is told.
Pay no mind to these morons claiming to be "natives" and saying these places suck. _THAT_ tells me that they are clueless about Tampa, pressed Cuban Sandwiches, AND the culture surrounding them! They are wrong. *_COMPLETELY._* Local (bodega-style, or straight-up sandwich shop) Pressed Cuban places are all over the Tampa Bay area. _Not_ just in Tampa proper. My sister worked in a locally-owned corner store up in New Port Richey, and she made Tampa-pressed Cubans. Most are reputable and delicious wherever you find them.
The sandwich recipe is cut and dried: Ham, Roast Mojo Pork, Salami, Dill Pickle, and Swiss Cheese on fresh Cuban Bread. *PERIOD.* It is then pressed, or garlic pressed. The latter having melted garlic butter, instead of just plain melted butter, swathed on the bun before it is put in the hot press. The bread is usually from Segunda Bakery, but there are other authentic loaves (with the strip of Palm frond across the top) baked locally, and _most_ of these places use this local bread.
Now, there are ever so slight variations, but these only make a signature for the individual place. To wit: Some places use shaved boiled ham, while another may use smoked ham, and yet another, baked/Black Forrest Ham. One place may use regular salami, and another may use hard salami. And one place may use sliced Mojo Roast Pork, while another may use roasted, pulled Mojo Pork Shoulder. Getting the picture? Heck, one place may use mustard/mayo sauce, another just mustard. One place may use long-sliced pickles, and another will use round. _But, as you can see the ingredients are exactly the same, basically.
These subtle variations don't change the flavors of a Tampa-pressed Cuban, they just make them a bit unique to that place you're getting it at. For a food/travel vlog, trying to show the world our beloved sandwich, I'd say you nailed it in a way these detractors *COMPLETELY* missed! You showed them our sandwich CULTURE! The way we have our own favorite local place making our favorite local sandwich! Chicago has its Hot Dogs, NYC has its Pizza, LA has its Taco Trucks, and Tampa has pressed Cubans! I loved your journey to random local spots. You *NAILED THIS!*
There's an old Hip-Hop saying .... _"if you got haters, then you doin' somethin' right!"_ SO, pay no mind to these "locals", they are likely transplants just like me, anyways. I moved to Port Richey when I was 6 years old in 1970. And didn't move away until 2006. I've eaten more of these sandwiches than your imagination could conceive!
    👍👍👍 *Great job!* 👍👍👍
