As a Brit with a profound love of the US, when I first went to the US and discovered the Cuban sandwich, I was taken aback, all my friends and family here in the UK now love the Cuban
Great presentation!!.. I personally prefer the Tampa version with the Genoa salami, like you well said it was the Italian influence in Ybor at the time of the cigars factory workers. I noticed your delicate marinating of meats is the secret for flavors. Most shops don't take this extra step... Tampa has a lot of Spanish, Italian and German influence.. that said.. Flavor!! Please investigate about the Puertorican tripleta sandwich. Love the flow of the video.. Saludos 👍
See if you can find a Cuban restaurant nearby. I moved from Lakeland, FL to Indianapolis. Sure enough, there's a Cuban place about 25 minutes away. Haven't been yet, but I aim to.
Those look absolutely amazing! Great seeing you at the Iola car show last Saturday. I'm Daniel from MN that talked with you about the beef on weck sandwiches from the Buffalo area. I've never had any form of authentic Cuban but maybe next year at the car show you can bring some of those supplies with Uncle Dickie! Great stuff Rus!
Excellent head to head! I've never had theTampa version before but I'm thinking it would be my favorite. Best cuban sandwich I've ever has was at Meson De Pepe in Key West. Fantastic ! They pull their pork rather than slice it. Cuban sandwiches have such simple ingredients but so much flavor. You nailed this one Rus. Thanks for the history lesson as well.
I remember having a Cuban sandwich for the first time when I visited Florida in 2016... I instantly fell in love and it's become my second most favorite sandwich (the first being the Reuben).
Yep, Salami on the Tampa version is from the Italian influence.. from the Cigar factory workers.. neither has to be pressed, that was not the original it came later.. Good Job Rus! These sandwiches were made like this because they did not need refrigeration when they take them to factory for their lunches..
Yes I mentioned the Italian influence in the video. Lack of refrigeration is also why they didn’t use mayonnaise. Thanks for stopping by it’s been awhile!
Great job, Russ. Very informative and interesting. I had no idea there were 2 different versions of the sandwich, as I've only ever known the "Miami" style, but I think the salami would be a great addition.

This episode is awesome! I still have yet to have a Cuban sandwich even though I know what they are! There always seems to be something that looks better on the menu. LOL! But you've convinced me! Super interesting about the bread. And so much fun to watch you construct these! I love salami so I am down with Tampa! Now to find a proper Cuban out here! And of course, I need to read the history! :) You are always up to something great Rus!!
Hey Jill! Yeah I forgot your down in Florida right now, you should definitely try them out. I hear the Columbia is the most authentic in Tampa but there are many other places around that area that make them. Thanks for watching!
Wow, both sandwiches look awesomely delicious but I would go with the tampa cuban one any day. Thanks dear for sharing with us, looking forward to more recipes from you.
Been to Miami and Tampa many times. Unfortunately, I was always driving OTR and just never had the chance to grab a Cuban sandwich, but man do they ever look and sound delicious.
Both sandwiches looked delicious, I like the Miami version better since I don’t really like salami. I’m Cuban and from time to time I make my own sandwiches, I like to pour on top of the roasted pork a little bit of a mojo I make with salt, sour oranges, cumin and crushed garlic. I roast and ground my own cumin, the store one is not good IMO, makes a huge difference on the flavor.
Heck ya fellas those Cuban’s look ok delicious!! Interesting about the 2 different styles! I like is would like the Tampa more too with that sausage added! I got to get one of those sandwich presses!!
Hey Jeff! Thanks for checking it out brother! Pretty tasty sandwiches for sure! I especially like the bread that’s pressed to give it a really nice crisp
Dang Rus and Derek....the Sandwiches 🥪 look crazy delicious. Thanks for telling us little history behind both Sandwiches. Y'all take care and have yourselves a great week. Cheers!
Y’all wanna talk about good! I love salami on a sammie with good mustard! Being of Italian and German descent, I love it all! You did really good with this! I enjoyed being a taste tester, too!
Excellent reproduction of the classic, brother! I like the Genoa Salami addition but there’s no doubt that they’re both delicious. That Sammy press you have is awesome lol. Cheers 🍻
I must say both sandwiches look awesome. There is vernacular that is lost on us older folks, but the point still comes across. Cheers, Russ and Derek! ✌️
For the years I lived in Florida, I never had a Cuban in Tampa, as much as we played at Skippers or at Jannus, Versailles on 8th in Little Havana was my go-to for a Cuban. You did a great job on both👍🏼🇺🇸🔥
Oh yeah you did this one right! I have always had the Miami version I guess, but I want to Try the Tampa version now for sure it seems even better! Now I gotta order some of that bread
@@SmokyRibsBBQ Ok, thank you! They have entirely different flavors and when making this for the first time, I appreciate knowing what kind of pickle. 🙏
Hey Russ, just found you looking for Iola car show info. Man, that Cuban sandwich (Tampa) looks great! My favorite Cuban sandwich shop in the Tampa area serves a black bean and rice soup with their sandwiches. Add a little Louisiana hot sauce and it’s good to go. What part of Mississippi are you from? And congrats to Rebels baseball team! A new Wisconsin follower.
To yummy Russ! Love that Mojo pork, looks so delicious. A good Cubana sandwich is probably my favorite and fortunately there a a few little places in Reading, PA where I can get 1. Makes me want 1 now. My first video since catching with Smoken Joe the other night
My favorite, favorite way to cut it is the way this Cuban Sandwich restaurant when I was little would cut it, is cutting it in the center long ways..it just tastes better that way? 😋 That restaurant unfortunately closed down. But it was really Popular..the Bomb, they would say now adays...
Great video. Really enjoyed the history about how it came to be with Spanish, Italian, German influences and the Swiss Cheese being the melting pot to bring it together.
You may can find it locally, since Badia products are sold here, but I ordered it online. There are a few Mexican stores around here that may have it if you can't find it elsewhere locally.
I lived near Tampa and Ybor for about 20 years. The Cuban at the Columbia along with a Cafecito afterwards is life. Btw, La Segunda serves a mojo chicken Caesar sandwich that's pretty awesome.
Definitely. The Columbia is gorgeous and a dozen or so dining rooms, but the main one with the skylight and fountain is the best. They have Flamenco dancers, certain nights, at the bar and hand rolled cigars. Don't pass up on the 1905 salad. It's legendary.
Try my version substituting Sweet Baby Rays honey mustard on each slice of bread and 2 slices of honey ham with bread & butter pickles. I like it better than the original Sandy’s Cafe Cuban in Key West.
I dont recall the Cuban ingredients i had tasted in clearwater Beach but I would assume its the same as tampa. It was hands down the most flavorful and best cuban sandwich, actually better than any sandwich, that I have ever eaten.
I live and grew up in Central Florida for the longest time I never knew people outside of Florida didn't know what a Cuban sandwich was I thought they were everywhere
Dumped it over 2 years ago. It ran a long time but it was time to give it up. I still play that music at the end of some of the videos like I did on this one.
As a Cuban of 52 years old living in Tampa and eating Cubans since I was a kid I choose the Miami version PS the ham used in the Cuban sandwich is called serrano ham and sliced thin
Thank you, in my research for this video I only heard sweet ham from Tampa and Miami. I'll look into the serrano ham for sure! Your the 2nd person today to mention it.
I always thought they put a spicy mustard on that sandwich. Like a habanero spice or a beer mustard something. Either way I love that sandwich. 😋 with a cold beer to wash it down. 👍
All the videos I seen researching this shows French's mustard. Something that was around way back in the early 1900's and didn't need refrigeration. Thanks for watching!
The other subtle factor is how much butter you coat the sandwich and plancha with. If you go way heavy on the butter you get a crispier more golden bread but it washes away the flavor of the other sandwiches you already made and there is something to be said for that steak infusion from previous sandwiches on a dirty plancha. If you're between Tampa and Miami on the west coast Sopressa Cafe on Tamiami and Naples is your best bet and on the east coast Cubano BY on Old Dixie in Vero Beach is the way to go. And special shoutout to Casa Santiago in Palm Beach Area on Okeechobee has the best soups in the state if you don't count the twenty-dollar bowl of she-crab soup from Frenchy's. The Seinfield soup guy can't come close to Casa Santiago.
Well luckily this was only my second cook on the new plancha, so nothing was affecting the flavor from previous cooks. But I'm sure in time I will have many cooks on it. It's cast iron, so in my mind, the more it's used the better it will taste.
Authentic. I don't think they eat Cuban sandwiches in Cuba. And they for sure don't have a panini press in Cuba. They are lucky to get enough food for a few days there, let alone worry about a proper Cuban Sandwich.
Why mess with success. If I can buy something better than what I can make, then I'm in. Cuban sandwiches uses roasted pork, not smoked or grilled, that's why the oven. Thanks for watching.
