- When you think about Cubans in Florida, you probably don’t think of Tampa. But you should! Sure, today, Miami has the biggest concentration of Cuban-Americans in the state -- and the country, for that matter. But back before Miami was even a city, it was here, in Tampa, that the cigar industry boomed and the iconic Cuban sandwich was born.
You know: soft Cuban bread, shredded pork, glazed ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard, and -- as is custom ONLY in Tampa -- Genoa salami. And while Miami basks in its well-deserved reputation as the epicenter of modern Cuban America, 400,000 Tampans patiently wait for their town to get its historic Cubano due. So we came to Cigar City to do just that.

Being from Tampa, I’d say the most important part of the Cuban sandwich is the pork. Has to be shredded pork, not sliced.
I disagree, it's the bread. If you don't have fresh authentic Cuban bread, the sandwich is trash.
Bread and, in my opinion, the pickles.
@@ingallswitte5718 Mustard?
CTback that too, Cuban sandwich mustards HITS DIFFERENT.
Bread and shredded pork
Only after you’ve tasted a Cuban sandwich can you understand how good it is
As a kid I grew up in Tampa and I hated mustard until my pops randomly handed me a Cuban and I took a bite and my opinions changed.
I'm from Tampa. I've been gone for way too long. Y'all just made me so hungry for a real, authentic Cuban. And I'm loving all the love Tampa is receiving in the comments. We don't need the recognition, y'all. Cuz we know what's up. We've got Cubans, scachatta, and so much more that outsiders don't have a clue about.
I grew up with La Segunda Central Bakery. It was our first stop every Sunday on our way home from church.
Louis Alarcon my uncle owns that place
Born and raised in tampa 1946 loved it 4yrs in airforce Vietnam vet still loved tp moved to Texas 2yrs ago still love Tampa and miss it
As a Tampa native, I dislike how Tampa is regularly underrated and overlooked by outsiders especially for its neighbor cities such as Miami and Orlando. We have a lot to offer too
please keep tampa pure :)))) you guys will get your due ...cheers from miami
I am from beautiful Winter Park, FL. We all know that the traffic in Tampa sucks. However, I like the rest of Tampa. I need to visit Tampa more often.
I've lived all over FL and Tampa is my favorite. Best city the east
Because Tampa Bay is trash
Look at the bright side, we aren’t filled to the brim with tourists.
Shouldn't have been watching this on an empty stomach...
Sounds liked you need a Cuban sandwich.
wow! such a original comment.
i never seen this one before.
you are hungry watching food videos?!
where did you come up with that?
you should be comedian or something.
The Columbia is one of the prettiest restaurants I’ve been to and I get a deviled crab and cuban every time I go back to see my family in Tampa. Best. Food. Ever.
Glad I live in Tampa, tons of great places to eat.
As someone who regularly eats a Cuban sandwich in tampa, all this is true
I can concur. Just had a Publix Cuban myself. 😌
I miss Tampa. This was really hard to watch for me. My store was on Interbay in a. Tampa. We called it the "green store" but I think it was actually named "Hymans mkt?" They made an excellent Cuban! I'm in Wyoming now and......can't get those here!!!!!! I remember, a few years back that Arby's was advertising a "Cuban Sandwich!" I couldn't stop laughing when I first saw the commercial!!!!!
Genoa salami!!!! Makes sense, every time I've had a Cuban, I was like it's missing something.
Almost went to Aguila’s today. You did my city a service. Thanks for sharing our proud story.
Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching!
That man's forearm 6:29 is what gives the bread that special taste he's talking about.
Gotta get that elbow grease in there
Lollllllll
As a Cuban American, who has eaten Cuban sandwiches in different parts of the US, thanks to my dad moving us all over the place. I believe the most important thing is the Bread, Tampa has the best Cuban Bread you can find, the pork is pretty similar, but the one from Tampa takes top honors in my book.
Amazing Series, there's always something new to discover in every video.
Glad you're enjoying it!
I Love that Guy Bryant Valdez the Bread Baker, Great attitude. Baking bread since he was 17 .. Awesome !!
Strawberry milkshake and a Cuban is a Tampa must!!!
This guy is so classy and cultured, the best food and culture reviewer!
Being a three time resident of Tampa, I have tried so hard to explain the Cuban Sandwich to people out west. It's almost impossible. Mostly I've lived in Wyoming and Washington state in my later years and I actually see Cuban Sandwiches on some menus and I just start laughing and I have to explain the actual history of this wonderful sandwich! I've known the history since I was at Monroe jr. high in south Tampa. It's really a great story for a Sandwich if you think about it. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BREAD! this little story covered this pretty well I have to say. I unfortunately never got to eat at the historic Columbian so I never got a Cuban from there, but there are so many places that knew how to do this right! My favorite place in a. Tampa was Hymans market, we called it "the green store" on Interbay. If I ever get back there, the first meal I will have is a Cuban! It was really hard to watch this video btw!
Born and raised in the Tampa Bay area and I had no idea these places existed. Been to Centro ybor, seen the cigar factory but never knew about the bakery or Cuban culture. Pretty neat!
seventhday savior You need to get out more! The majority of Tampa’s culture is from Cuban (& Italian) influence.
Have you been to la Teresita?
Same here lol
Tampa doesn’t get the credit it deserves for anything it does.
Agreed! Even a brief visit reveals great stuff. Best Cuban coffee, seriously. Ybor city. Sandwiches. The freaking Salvador Dali museum! The whole guava thing?!
Like good coke
because Tampa is, objectively, a shit hole.
@@dustyowl99 Compared to what? Best city I've ever lived in.
dustyowl99 get a load of this guy
The Cubans in Tampa Bay are so good! When I go to visit my dad there we always pick some up :)
8:30 is the brilliant moment of the video. that sandwich is massive!
The production value of this series still blows me away.
I love my hometown go Tampa!
I have never had a cuban sandwich but I really want to make one now (tampa style), knowing the history behind it. I also appreciated that this video branched beyond just the sandwich into the industry that created it and the places that make it possible. It so cool to see and what I appreciate about these videos!
Glad you appreciated it! Now go get yourself a Cuban sandwich.
Good luck finding Cuban bread
is it hard to find? i live in Miami so its everywhere but outside of Florida do they like not have Cuban bread?
Depends. If you find a bakery that does make Cuban bread in the traditional style, you're in luck. Otherwise, most bakeries outside of Florida -- Tampa Bay for the most part -- don't make Cuban bread. Your best bet is to look up La Segunda Bakery and order some delivered. May take a bit of a wait, but trust me, it will be worth it in the end.
Took the streetcar to Ybor City just to get the original Cubano. Sat at the bar you show @1:55 and perhaps it was the history and ambiance but that was one heck of a delicious Cuban sandwich indeed. Really enjoyed the bakery segment here. Palmetto leaves? Who knew?! Very cool episode.
Hell yeah, that's awesome. We're glad you enjoyed the video... and the sandwich.
+Thrillist I'm a sucker for old or original even if it may be past its prime. Really have zero feel for Columbia's reputation but super glad you guys profiled.
I've eaten cubans all over the TB area throughout my life. Columbia is really good, but in my personal opinion, it doesn't hold a light to Bodega's cuban in St. Pete. If you're over there, it comes highly recommended. St. Pete in general has a lot of good food though. Great episode though!
+Kyle Sundstrom I was in Tampa on business and was on a time crunch but I typically do my research and hit up a few places comparing a local iconic dish. I see that Bodega is next to the Trop. Hopefully I'll be back in the area soon.
Tosh T if you were in ybor did you see the famous chickens that roam free there?
Wow! That looked soooo good!!
you guys should have WAYYYY more subscribers than you currently do. keep up the good stuff, you're making me wanna pack my bags and eat great food all around the country!
I left my home town Tampa and the USA almost 6 years ago and miss Cuban bread and Cuban sándwiches so so much !!!!!
Love your videos! You rock!
Seeing videos like this is so cool considering its showing areas I've grown up in, and how I've walked these streets. My grandpa used to role cigars, and while he's really old now and his memory is spotty (he even forgets my name) he never forgot his time in the cigar factory
So high production value on these videos - you deserve to make it big.
This was a great clip, I really enjoyed the history that makes us what and who we are. Well done!
In the 70s and 80s the best place to get a Cuban sandwich was from Hutto’s Corner . I am a Tampa native. And have had Cuban sandwich from all over Florida and now Tennessee . But the best Cuban sandwich can always be found only in Tampa Florida. From the meat to the bread 🥖 it is the best city to eat a authentic Cuban sandwich.
Real talk coming from an Asian that lived in the area.
You really captured Tampa. Thank you!
Hi That Cuban sandwich was like I can taste it thank you for showing me this place in Tampa 😋😋🤤🤤🤤💙
I only found this channel a couple days ago and I already love it, needs more subs 100%. Dave and Justin are also instantly two of my favourite RUclips hosts in general.
Hey, thanks! Spread the word.
My mom and her sisters worked in the cigar factories back in the 1940's my father enjoyed many tampa cigars as did my grandfather back in the day as did i in my younger years
You got everything right about Tampa and its Cuban Sandwich. Nice job.
My home. Many fond memories eating Cuban sandwiches and drinking café con leche with my abuelo and nano.❤️
Shant Ficarrotta 'll
Wow Cuban sandwich and food my favorite
u guys deserve more subscribers really
History always makes the best sandwiches.
Being from Tampa and transplanted to North Carolina I can honestly say that one of the most difficult things to adjust to is not having a good Cuban sandwich up here. The restaurants keep wanting to change it up. The put fancier mustards on it the do weird things with the pork spices. I tell them whenever they ask "You're fucking it up! This is not rocket science here. A Cuban is simple." My dad and I get at least one sandwich every time we go home whether it's for two hours or two weeks.
It's one of the ways that we know that we're home.
Time for lunch.. Great story.
These things are *dang good*
Tampa. The city that should be known for the Cuban sandwich, but isn't.
I have met people around the country that agree that Tampa does it better. Also the locals know this.
I have had Cubans from places that ask if you want lettuce and tomatoes on your sandwich and use the wrong kind of bread. Stay away from these places lol.
From tampa. Honestly most residents haven’t ventured beyond the local strip mall. But there’s freaking tons of great places to eat. Explore!
I need that in my life🎯
I am 70 years old and remember Cuban sandwiches before they started pressing them. They were heated open faced under a broiler back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Then someone started pressing them with a heavy iron skillet and in a short period of time, everyone did it. I don't like that.I prefer the old way under the broiler.
If it tastes good and works for you, eat. To hell with the purists.
Great video. One of the only videos I’ve seen that gets it right. Aguila and the Columbia both have excellent Cubans but there are some other great places in town as well.
Any recommendations? Hoping to visit Tampa this summer
Aguila has the BEST food. Always visit the shop when I'm in Tampa.
There is a gas station in Gulfport, FL (South St Pete area) called Gulfport Mini Mart that makes a delicious Cuban sandwich. It is made with all sliced deli meats and it is damn good sandwich. Habana Cafe is right across the street and offers a roast pork version. But the real gem is at
the Mini Mart.
Sammy's legendary sandwich lives on.
I'm from Miami and I really want to try their Cuban sandwich I know someone that personally told me they are 🔥.
I'm from st.louis mo, been living in Tampa for two years and I eat a Cuban once a week never even heard of one before I moved here every city has there own original food
Welp, time to go get a cubano sandwich now
We couldn't agree more.
Please, don't call it a Cubano. It's just a Cuban Sandwich.
Weird coincidence, but I clicked on this as I ate my Cuban sandwich. Lol great episode
It's like food destiny.
I love Cuban sandwiches so much! But they are hard to find in my neck the woods
Live in tampa, gonna go visit this. Awesome channel, keep it up.
Hell yeah. Let us know how you like it.
Definetly good as hell!! Went today, thanks man, another place to add to the favorites. You ever been to La Teresita on W Columbus?
lockharttt my favorite is Brocatos
I lived in Tampa for over 20 years. I consider it one of the best places I ever lived. But, keep in mind I lived in Tampa before the urban sprawl started. I was there when the old Ybor City still existed. I go back as often as I can because my daughter still lives there. It was some of the best 20 years I had. The Columbia restaurant is always a MUST STOP for us. I also suggest you do a tour of the cigar factory even if you do not smoke them.
I love Tampa Cubans best ever
Awesome host
love living here boiii
I have to say … Miami cuban boy had a little bit of a culture shock … things are a little different in Tampa but I love my peoples were wherever their at… toastada and cafe con leche like mom had for us.. we good 👍 🇨🇺
Awesome video !! Showcasing where the Real Cuban sandwich was born and still made in Tampa, Fla !!! If anyone has not tried a Real Cuban sandwich from Tampa, you are in for a treat and it will be one of the best sandwiches you ever eat. The Cuban bread used and made by La Segunda Bakery is absolutely the best Cuban bread made on this planet. If you visit Tampa, make sure you try a Cuban Sandwich, it will be love at first bite.

The simplicity of this sandwich needs to be recognized. It's not complicated but can't be the same if any of the ingredients are missing (or substituted. Mayo?? Are you insane?). Cubans got it right, and they got it delicious. One of my favorite sandwiches of all times.
dang it now I want a Cubano sandwitch
I used to get one of these at a Cuban gas station on the way home from work in Tampa. I think it was outside of town .
2:31 Then you go pork, Cubans 🤣🤣🤣
I drive by that factory all the time, ever since i was a kid. i always thought it was abandoned.
You should come to Montreal, QC, Canada for Smoke'd Meat Sandwiches ! While your on the Island you need to go to Chenoy's in Pointe-Claire (the west side of the island)
For sure hit up Schwartz' and smoke meat Pete's!!
Thanks for the recommendation. Sounds delicious.
Drasell nah canada ain't got shit on a Tampa cuban thanks but i live in paradise i will pass on northern food
Alvin Wine Haha I'm not trying to take away any glory from Tampa, but there's other good food in the world
8:49 that sandwich is massive 😳😳
I live in tampa. The b roll intro made tampa look nice af
8:15 That guy was on Man vs. Food!
813....7th ave ybor! Known for our free roaming chickens, bayshore blvd, and club skye lol
Aw man, I lived in Tampa for 2 years, walked past these places all the time, and had no idea about all this stuff. It's like the time I lived near Kansas City and never had any of the barbecue....
Well maybe it's time to come back...
Ha! I lived in Florida for most of my life, I think I'm good. That said, it wouldn't hurt to pay a visit with my friends still in Tampa, I liked that town. Maybe someday.
Hillsborough county baby
Used to eat one almost every day for 12 years in Tampa Flordia.
Thank you for coming to my city u should go to July 4th for coffee con leche and Cuban bread
What flavor is that milkshake?😍 need to make it down 2 Tampa
Food Groups and $5 NYC Lunch
One big question would cuban sandwich work with french bagete insted of cuban bread? is it really so big difference? Because i cant buy cuban bread in my country noone sells it.
Trust me once you've had the Tampa cuban, all other cuban sandwiches can never be good enough. I can't believe I used to take it for granted.
I've eaten Cuban sandwiches in Tampa and they're good , but I rather eat the Cubans from Miami.
Honestly my whole family lives in cuba and i go there all the time, and the bread is so different... you barely ever find the cuban bread they sell here in Cuba.
This dude is so great! Love the more thoughtful videos!
Glad you're enjoying the series!
Love the sandwiches but never had one with salami,😢
Missing me some La Teresita
Greatest city in America
Actually the Cubans in Tampa came from Key West, which is where the cigar industry got its start in this country. And prior to 1892 Key West was the original "Cigar City".
Man I love this series! When is the next season coming out?! On another note....I don't understand how the "has to be able to hold at room temp" argument applies to mayo? You've got pork that will go bad, bread that will go stale, cheese that will harden up, mustard that will get a little crusty....sure, mayo falls into the "not ideal after sitting out for a while" category, but the same applies for almost all of the traditional cuban ingredients.
And, to elaborate, I felt this episode was just as well-made as the rest in the series, but it lacked any sort of depth. You got the cuban from The Columbia, walked over to the cigar factory to eat it, and then seemingly forgot to include the actual eating and discussing of the sandwich. Loved the bread part, but then after that, at Hemingways, the conversation about cuban sandwiches was full of contradictions and lacked any sort of interesting insight or commentary. Still really enjoyed the episode...just my two cents!
How much is the flight from Phoenix to Tampa?
I would often visit Silver Ring on 7th Ave when I was younger. The guy at the counter would prep the bread with mayo. I believe Brocato's would add mayo too. I miss the Cuban food. The stuff we have in Chicago, in regards to Cubano cuisine, is horrible.
As a Miami Native see the movie “Chef”
thank you joey diaz
The BEST Tampa Cuban I've ever had was probably at a little hole in the wall called Andy's (I think?) and it was by far the best I've ever had.
Cuba-bop-bop
But still were ever it is our 🇨🇺 CUBAN FOOD is Amazing 😉
