Yeah, I know this is about chains, but the best burgers that I have ever eaten were made in a roadside bar and grill that had a lunch menu. The bar was short on charm but a taste that crushed any chain. But sometimes it is easier to good job when you are only making 100 burgers in a day instead of tens of thousands.

When I was in my mid-teens, I ate 25 White Castles sitting at the counter. My waitress said that she had never seen anybody eat that many in her 20 yrs. of working there. After that location was torn down for a bridge project, she was transferred to other locations. A few years later I ran into her at a WC that I frequented and she remembered me. She even told her fellow workers that I was the one she had told them about. I was flattered, but only had maybe 10 sliders that night. She said that I still held the record of what she witnessed. Yes, I did give her a generous tip that night. She retired soon afterwards. JMO.

The place is always sparkling clean, the employees are always friendly and helpful and the food is always out of this world. Their burgers are only one attraction. Their frozen yogurt is by far the best I've had. Their concrete mixers (like a Blizzard, only thicker) are to die for. Or you can just get a pint of any flavor you want already packed and ready to go. The only way I can see a fast food joint doing it like it's on the menu is if you lived somewhere extremely rural and the employees weren't being rushed. Even then you have to get someone that cares and wants to make it look as good as advertised.

The Canadian A&W is different from the US version. We still have the delicious Teenburger I have loved since I was in my teens, nearly 50 years ago. The food sourcing for the Canadian A&W is controlled by the Canadian company and they have been focusing on higher quality (eg, only grass-fed beef, chickens fed only vegetarian diets, etc.). And we still get to enjoy that great root beer and their onion rings. Thanks, A&W! (BTW, I don't work for them and never have. I am just someone who has been a happy customer for over 50 years).

Also Canadian here, and I'm now curious to know how bad the American version is. I was wildly thrown when A&W ranked below McDick's. It's not even a contest, A&W is much better.
Although the chicken feed thing isn't a selling point to me. Chickens are omnivores! Left to their own devices, they normally eat things like insects, which are an important part of their natural diet. They are not SUPPOSED to eat a "vegetarian diet" - that's a common marketing claim to swindle consumers who don't know how unhealthy that is for the chicken in question. I avoid their chicken products for the exact reason that this means the meat will be lower quality.
      But the beef...better than average.

I'm in Canada here's my rankings here (including US chains I have tried)
    1. A&W. Teen Burger is nostalgic and the Uncle Burger has to be considered one of the best chain burgers out there.
    2. Hero Certified Burgers. I have limited experience trying but they are good. Service is slow though.
    3. Harvey's. Just a tasty burger and you can top it any way you please. This is what I eat the most.
    4. Jack in the Box. Favorite US burger chain I've tried. Huge selection to satisfy any tastes.
    5. South Street Burger. Pricey but high quality. Limited selection. Unfortunately several locations have permanently closed.
    6. Carl's Jr/Hardee's. I can see why obesity is a big problem in the US. The amount you get for relatively cheap price is astounding. And its tasty to boot.
    7. Wendy's. My favorite sandwich there is actually the spicy chicken. Burgers are bland. But points for the fresh patties.
    8. Five Guys. Bland tasting burger to me. Pricy. But the fries are gangsta.
    9. Burger King. Quite often the burger isn't fresh and has been sitting under a heat lamp wilting the lettuce. BK....no way.
    10. McDonald's. Not my thing. Maybe have a Big Mac once per year for nostalgia reasons. Then I feel like I've swallowed a brick.
    11. Dairy Queen. They have no business making burgers sorry.
NR White Castle. You get more full on the bun then you do with the meat. Sliders aren't real burgers sorry. Nonetheless they are pretty yummy.

I live down the street from Shake Shack, Five Guys and In and Out ( Long Beach) so I'm pretty lucky. I like all 3 but still my favorite is Five Guys. I know everyone complains about the price but their burgers are really some of the best i've had. I don't like a ton of toppings, prefer to keep it simple. Their fries are amazing too! Forty years ago FatBurger's was without argument the best burger to be found in a retail setting. They had it down. I lived in Los Angeles at the time and they were only two locations. The one I frequented was was this tiny building that couldn't have been more than a couple hundred square feet in size. That included the area behind the counter. There were no tables only a counter which would accommodate maybe 20 patrons at a time. It was not unusual to have the counter stools filled and people lined up 4 to 5 deep waiting for orders to go. I never once actually ate within the building. It was just too damn crazy. But the quality of the burger made the madness worth it. I can't even tell you how extraordinary their burgers were. Today, as this once tiny gold mine has grown the quality has gone down as their market shares have gone up. Today, they aren't in anyway special. Yeah, they offer a better burger than McDonald's, Jack, Sonic, White Castle, Burger King, etc, but not that much better. They are very much like Fuddruckers was back in the early 70's. Fuddruckers simply blew me away when I visited the first time. The store was in Spokane, WA. It was outstanding. Fresh. Made to order. A bit pricey, but nothing else comparable was to be found. They, too, grew and as they grew they went from one extreme to the other. Both Fat Burger and Fuddrucker were once leaders in the hamburger business, but now just a couple of totally unremarkable dining establishment lost to progress - that is if you consider going from remarkable to run-of the mill progress. Today I wouldn't walk across the street to eat at either. Both are over-priced and survive by reputation only.
