ShadowACS, I'm sure it flew past you but heres what you may have missed...that girl isnt a Mistral rehash. Shes Mistrals DAUGHTER. In the games Mistral was about to have a kid soon, and in Twilight,years later, she has since passed her account down to her daughter. It's also why some of the returning characters recognize the twins characters.
I don't think I missed it. I don't think that was ever stated in the anime at all. Maybe in the manga.
I remember loving this when I was like 8/9 years old and still think to this day it wasn't a bad show..... Man perfect example of blind nostalgia lmao

I really don't understand why the plot point of siblings being separated due to their parents being separated shows up so much. That's not what generally happens when couples get divorced. That's terrible to do for the kids. They either stay together with the parent who has custody or go back and forth if they have joint custody. I hope that's just a stupid plot point they use and not an actual thing that's common in Japan.
Not a fan. Luckily, I generally don't come across that type of thing with the anime I watch.
Well that's the fandom doing that, though. It's not like those pairings are cannon. In a lot of cases, it's the fandom doing some of those uncomfortable things, and not the actual creators. However, things like that actually showing up in cannon are a different thing and more unsettling.
The only exception, is even though it's still uncomfortable, is if these types of themes are handled in a mature, realistic way and treat them as real problems. That's not the case most of the time where it ends up being treated like a joke.
Sad part is that this aired on Cartoon Network. Not Adult Swim. CARTOON. FUCKING. NETWORK.

I tried watching this show & just like you found it really REALLY annoying. this just confirms that it doesn't get much better. Now I'm trying to figure out what series you're doing next. The only one I can think of that finished it's second season is Fate/Apocrypha. I kinda liked this one so I'm hoping I'm right. If not, still looking forward to whatever show you do next. a LONG time ago i saw the first episode of this in my anime club but other then the fact that it was a .hack series (which i didn't even know their were MULTIPLE) i didn't remember what this was called so thank you for letting me know what the heck it was a saw and for letting me know that the rest of the show is NOT worth watching
I think this was like the fourth anime I ever watched. I wasn't sure where it sat in the timeline so I never picked up another .hack anime after this. But after watching your other reviews I now know I probably just had the misfortune of watching the shitty one first, might give the others a go.
This anime (based on what I can see in this review) basically does for the .hack-franchise what Monster Hunter Stories did for the Monster Hunter-games. Essentially taking a series that, while admittedly the latter has its silly moments, was still pretty mature and intense and simplifying/dumbing it down for a younger audience.
The majority of the Monster Hunter-games are thrilling action-games with a brutal sense of difficulty where you have to learn most of the game's mechanics through trial and error. The monsters are not sitting there nicely while you are trying to figure them out, they are coming at you and you have to adapt and gradually learn their patterns in order to defeat them.
They turned that into a Pokemon-ripoff.

And on that note, especially in G.U... how the hell can they feel pain or some mental agony when the Avatars are involved? Sword Art Online and Log Horizon had a credible excuse- their souls were trapped in the damn games!! Here, some people are in comas thanks to trippy A.I's because some loon was trying to find meaning in his sweethearts enigmatic poem.

The best reviews of ShadowACS are when he gets a lot of things to get pissed of. That's why I hope someday he makes a review of Captain Earth, Blood+ (2 animes that really pissed me of personally) and a ticket to damnation of "Kuroinu Kedakaki seijo wa hakudaku ni somaru" (a really painful to see Hentai that was made by the same creators of Kyonjuu Fantasy and Euphoria).
BTW, in the end he played the original 4 .Hack games? I remember I played them before watching Liminality and I think that's why I ended up enjoying watching Liminality since it helped me tie some loose knots, and helped me understand what exactly was "The Wave" I was fighting and how did the comatose victims appeared out of nowhere to help me in the last battle. And I don't know if this counts for an anime analysis, but there's a series of OVAS called ".Hack Terminal Disk" which serve as a summary of pretty much everything from the orignal 4 games story and a sort of prequel for the next part with Haseo and Ovan.
I'll probably have mixed feelings with .Hack Roots. In one hand, it's probably the most entertaining of the animes, in the other hand, the protagonist acts like a selfish jerk for the most of the show, and even when he's supposed to become more mature and likable during the G.U, he's still pretty much an ass. I mean, in his in-game marriage with the canon choice at the end of the games, his proposal is just saying "shut up and come with me", he actually makes the relationship between Sasuke and Sakura from Naruto look romantic.
.Hack Quantum, let's be frank, 3 OVAS is way too short of time to say anything about the story and the characters, I watched it when it was released and I barely remember anything, nothing memorable and I don't think that the characters ever appeared again. The whole franchise seems to be a little bit dead since a couple of years now, dunno if it's just me but I haven't seen anything new since .Hack Link and .Hack Quantum and those are kinda old by now.

Yea I don't blame you for wanting to take a break from this franchise and go onto something different for a bit. Even if al the series were super well done, you still might get tired of reviewing the same franchise and want to do other series for a while. Also are you thinking on making this a thing where you focus on a single franchise that has a lot of installments for a while?
An anime that just recently finished it's second season....and is in the fantasy genre.....
I did some research and came to only two possiblites, Overlord and Rewrite.
I also know that it can't be a comedy anime since ShadowACS usually prefers the more serious tone anime and wouldn't really review a more light-hearted anime unless it was just to punish himself.
I was going to guess Konosuba, but that show is neither recent nor serious in tone.
Oh,you should read the manga version of it with is better then the anime.

Hey Shadow, could you review Rokka No Yuusha? Its a nice fantasy, whit a good MC , mistery and a bit of romance. I think its right up your alley.
I feel it was made to have .hack in a lighter setting to offset all the dimmer entries and not made so much to be a squeal. I liked it but understand why others might not
the manga is better and actually canon, in the manga the insest vibes are there if you look too closely but that's for all of one panel, the main plot of the manga diverges around episode 2 if you want to be generous, Mireille is only 4 sure but she's still a valuable party member and hotaru was a boy in america anyway the main crux of the story comes from aura's daughter zefie who she crafted from lingering remnants of her Prototype/older sister lycrois who the azure knights are trying to delete in order to preserve order in the world, and that is something they can do thanks tho their specially made spears called the spear of wotan, except that killing daughter of the world's goddess might just make her go absolutely insane so it becomes a race against the guys in charge of the game in order to save an innocent AI's life

Also why the incest vibes? Why did they think it was a good idea to do that? Like you said they could have easily fixed the issue by making them not related. They already had the stupid plot point with them being separated due tot heir parents being separated, so instead of having an idiotic child custody agreement be the reason, they could just make them friends that haven't seen each other for a while like you said. That's just gross. They're just making their audience really uncomfortable. However, some of the things would still be a bit weird with how young the characters look with their character design choices. Sigh.

Fun facts: Aura was basically bored during Twilight and was the one who picked Shugo and Rena in the first place. Aura apparently gave Shugo the bracelet because she knew him as a human and made a promise to him and basically hacked CC corp and faked an event under Balmug and Reki's noses. The villain is also Aura's daughter who went evil because Aura is a shitty programmer and the AI stumbled into a crazy hacker obsessed with death and the hacker is the one who influenced her. A lot of Kamui's Nazi shit can be traced to Albireo who lost his job by helping Aura. And basically hates AI's because of it she's basically a murderous nut who doesn't know or doesn't care that all of the problems with AI in the series are caused by humans playing god with things beyond their control. Silver knight also cameos in the next sequel anime .hack/ROOTS where he is just as ineffective but at least he doesn't die. And seeing that he tried to mess with Haseo the terror of death he got off well. Also the anime is loosely based on a manga which is considered the canonical version of the story by the creators which is very different from the anime.

I like them, but I've heard a lot of more hardcore gamers really don't. Their engine is kinda outdated and the gameplay does feel a little repetitive after awhile. The story does do a great job of continuing to keep you interested, though.

Personally, I liked Jar Jar Binks. I watched Star Wars episode 1 a lot of times he never got on my nerves.

The twincest (subplot?) was done as comic relief. Shugo and Reina look nothing like their avatars, so Shugo becomes attracted to the Black Rose avatar, but is constantly reminded that it's his sister, which is some comedic writing trope where something is opposite of what you expect, I can't remember the name of it. Reina only acts spoiled and overly affection because she wants to be close to her brother like when they were kids, giving off a romantic vibe that adds to the "humor". But yeah, making them twins is completely pointless. Especially the Parent Trap plot of separating twins. Has that ever actually happened?
The thing is, I don't think it was intended as comic relief. If they were trying to make it funny it didn't come off that way at all. At least not to me.
Yea, that's part of the problem. It's a niche of comedy like how it's "funny" when a main character has a stalker or that "best friend" of the same sex constantly harrassing him/her. I recognize it as a trope because I've seen "comedies" use a similar twist played for humor.
And when done correctly Incest doesn't bother me. Also are you going to do Roots? I think it's the only one left.

If I had to guess, it would be that Jar Jar Binks is inferior compared to C-3PO in terms of being a comedy relief character. This is me speculating.

Numerous inaccuracies in this review. Not going to try to change opinions, just point out the flaws.
1. "[Shugo and Rena] won a contest neither remembers entering." - Rena entered them into the contest. Shugo is confused and shocked because Rena entered him without his permission. Rena is surprised because, out of astronomical odds, both of their individual entries were chosen as winners.
2. "There's one part later in the show where [the Crimson Knights] suddenly turn into these n@zi like dictators" - Again, I won't try changing opinion, but this seems to suggest they are executing innocent players selected at random. They aren't.The players chosen for character deletion are hackers who have essentially broken The World's TOS by illegally modifying their character data.
3. "Wow. Youre really trying to pass this off as a totally different character. [Mistral]" - They aren't. In IMOQ its revealed Mistral is pregnant. This is the original Mistral's daughter, using her mothers old account to play.
4. "Here apparently the reason [Aura] gave the bracelet to Shugo is that he looks like Kite." - Shugo doesnt simply 'look like' Kite. He is literally using Kites character data (reset to level 1). Aura chooses Shugo because Kites character data is compatible with wielding the bracelet. In her own words, "You are the heir to the dot hacker legend."

I really hate chibi. It is too distracting and pandering. Unless there is a good story behind it (girls last tour) chibi is one of the most annoying things I hate about modern anime.

I liked .hack/sign. I disliked .hack luminality. .hack by last recode game was fun imo. I never watched this iteration of .hack because it's looks did not appeal to me, and I did not hear positive things about this iteration of .hack anime.
Wait until you get to .hack//ROOTS. It gets good.
