  • Whew, finally got it done! This review took forever to make, and it turned out to be one of my longest yet, nearly reaching 16 minutes. And the show itself? Um...the main character has a cool mask, I guess?
Next review will be on a fantasy anime.

You didnt really pay attention or have really bad memory:
-Bai isnt dead just MIA/AWOL at the beginning
-Hei's has a goal: finding his missing sister by working for the syndicate
-the reason the organizations are fighting is that some want to destroy the anomaly and others want to use it for their own stupid plans
-Contractors not known to the general public is pretty logical, not sure how the existance of the 2 anomalys would change that. There arent that many around and even if someone learns of it he dies or the special police force "erases" their memory (not sure how that is supposed to work but OK its magic)
-the stars and sky: the anomaly has trapped earth and projects a fake sky over it - rockets cant leave earth as they "disappear" (dont remember what happens)
-Contractors are emotionless - if they said that they show sociopath behavior the whole thing wouldnt be a problem and make sense (not sure if this was intentional though - talking about mental illness is a big nono in japan even today)
DTB wasnt perfect but its a good show. At least its not like todays anime with the whole harem BS.... god I hate animes with harems....

I think you missed something, explained by Mao when he is captured : Contractor does have emotions, they can just bypass it for rational decision. But they do feel fear, love, anger, envy and so on. And the whole point of the show is to emphasize about how strange that makes them. So basicaly, the duality of that was showed like this : They talk like normal human being, feel etc... then once the fight is started they can kill off friends or lovers if that serves their interest.

I literally just finished the first season of this show after putting it off for a decade, and as much as I'm loving it I think younger me would find it slightly boring. The humor is there, but it's pretty understated, and the show has no problem killing people off. There's a surprising amount of nuance there for how cheesy it can be at times. Plus for some reason they STACKED the dub with anyone of note who has *ever* worked for Funimation it seems like. Also, electric Nightwing is a cool concept and in my opinion, enjoyable as hell. But that's just me.

I agree that the story/worldbuilding has a shitton of flaws (the writers really should have clarified that Contractors are more like sociopaths than mindless killing machines) but considering this was 2007~2010's attempt at a multimedia project, I think it was a pretty good one (season 2 doesn't exist).
I also think a part of its charm was how dreary and depressing it was, especially at the beginning (akin to how a person who smiles, talks and interacts with many people can secretly still be lonely) but it's nice to see the characters warm up to each other over time. :)

This is the worst analysis possible for such a good show. DTB has some of the most intriguing characters in anime, with a very particular double-faceted protagonist which I've seen in very few shows (such as Lelouch from Code Geass or Kira from Death Note); with a very original plot that would've had so much potential as to what could come next if the show was continued; amazing OVAs; fantastic playlist; and incredibly well-developed episodes that contained just the right amount of main plot combined with different little stories to make each feel fresh, new and interesting.
I feel that what many people fail to appreciate in DTB is the display of power and agility in characters, because we're so used to seeing these big fights with incredibly super-human abilities, where many powers are centered in each character. A bunch of people with special abilities that need to eat paper to pay for them is nothing compared to a Shinigami like Ichigo or a legendary ninja like Naruto, but when you make things so big, nothing can surprise you anymore. Dragon Ball, for example, has really entertaining episodes at first, with characters training hard and truly struggling to win a fight. They have you gripping the edge of your seat. But then? It becomes bigger, and bigger, and bigger, to the point that death is inconsequential, distance is inconsequential, even time itself is inconsequential; you just know they're gonna win in the end. Smaller stories with smaller characters have so much more potential to develop, surprise you and leave an impression, without stopping to be super-human. Another thing which you've mentioned yet then completely threw out the window, is thay this show has to be considered compared to other shows within the time it was published, and not to stuff that didn't even exist until very recent years with a entirely different approach to plot, animation and dialogue.
Idk. Tastes are tastes, but an analysis should look depeer than just what you liked or didn't like (ahem like the cursed second season),and especially if you're dropping mistaken facts about the show as mentioned by many comments below...

  • @paulkareta

Hei isn’t technically a contractor, and Hei does have a goal, which is just to find his sister Bai. Eventually at the end of season one you find that his sister disappeared at the battle of Heaven’s Gate and (somehow?) fused with him to give him is contractor powers, for which he doesn’t have to pay a price for. The thing with “emotionless” is pretty weird, yeah, and it certainly is inconsistent, but at the same time there are a few sparse explanations including the episodes with Havoc, and just random comments about them paying their consciences when gaining contractor powers. It’s not airtight or anything, but I think it’s important to understand that the emotion they no longer feel is remorse, guilt, or attachment, which would’ve been much better to specify rather than fully cold and stoic.
Then season two.... idk, I’ve decided not to watch it for now. The whole thing with Yin is just so weird I don’t feel like watching it.

Agree. I’ve noticed stories used to have secret societies and there was always a rule about not telling other characters about the main draw of the series. Like being magical girls, or magic users, or mermaids or having superpowers or whatever and a lot of current stories have dropped the whole secret thing. Secret societies/ secret identities.
It seems modern audiences have come to like stories where magic is known everywhere or if there’s people with powers like in DtB then the whole world should know. MHA comes to mind. Both are interesting, but I think these are just two different types of stories. Though, I do kinda prefer the secret society stories more and I think this kind of thing makes more sense than thinking the world would be accepting of mermaids or the son of Satan, etc. Society isn’t accepting of people on the fringes. Differences are often rejected.
I kinda suspect the uptick in stories dropping the secret thing is due to the world trying to be more accepting and drawing comparisons to the fictional aspects and irl circumstances. Not a bad thing, but I do wish they wouldn’t kill the secret society stories. Fiction can just be fiction still. It doesn’t always have to have an irl comparison.

Personally, I LOVED Darker than Black, and I think you're being WAY too harsh on it. They didn't WANT to make a cyberpunk world. They WANTED to make a creepy dark supernatural world that suddenly got thrust onto a modern tech world and the world is struggling to figure out how to handle it.
IIRC, the 'stars disappear' and space travel is explained as 'they tried, and whatever they sent up just disappeared and they never heard from it again'. Including manned missions that didn't explode, but also never came back down. Hell's Gate and Heaven's Gate and the stars are all undeniable mysteries that no one can hide, but also don't hugely impact the day-to-day lives of everyday people. The existence of random people with superpowers, on the other hand, would be the kind of thing to make people panic. A coverup there feels legit.
Lastly, the 'they have no souls' is written not 'they have no emotions' even though that's what they say, but rather 'they have no interpersonal bonds' like they're all sociopaths. There's a lot of 'not everything is explained', and that's ok. That's a style of storytelling.
You're expecting this to be something completely different from what it actually is, and pissed that it isn't what you wanted it to be.

While the show had its flaws, I still think its the weirdness and the oddities that made no sense that got me in love with this anime. It's so niche, compared to bigger names like Death Note, Naruto, SAO....all those for that time. Especially now with big tier shows like My Hero Academia...everyone loves it, there's merch of it everywhere. But the thing is, the story and characters are so in your face and obvious that it makes it so mainstream, because it's so expanded and lovable. That's not a negative thing (I still enjoyed those shows), I just think it's less interesting than companies trying strange and questionable stuff if that makes sense? The stuff nobody really cares about, too. I know I sound like a "special snowflake" perhaps, but that's just what I think...
Darker than Black was the 3rd anime I've ever seen around 2010-ish. I recently rewatched it since then and understood more about it than I did 10 years ago. And from all the anime I've seen, I think it's become my second most favorite anime. But it's a little conflicting, because even if I feel positive towards this anime, I also know it lacks a lot of depth that should've been expanded with the potential it has. So therefor I also feel disappointed about it. It's strange. Nevertheless, this anime show has a special place in my heart(and yes, even if season 2 wasn't as good imo...).

Hell yeah it's about time. Btw I think they mention somewhere that they sent rockets into space. But they got lost or blown up. I like that the powers and the world are kinda like Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl where it's all strange, bizarre and unexplainable. The setting is really just set dressing for cool relatively grounded supernatural fight scenes and fun stories. Some themes and characters were kinda wasted and underdeveloped. But there were standouts here or there. I'd say its main problem besides its characters is it takes itself too seriously unlikely something like say Symphogear(2nd season onwards) where it embraces its silliness or acknowledges it. It feels like cowboy bebop except it has less character and charm.

Also, the idea that being “cold, rational, nonemotional” is “the next phase of evolution” is a really, REALLY shitty idea for a lot of reasons, but ALSO bc it’s been used to pathologize and objectify autistic people (almost exclusively autistic men) and excuse shitty behavior instead of trying to help manage and deal with social struggles.
Humans are an inherently social species, struggling to connect with others can cause a LOT of issues.

I don't remember who went on the evolution spiel but I'm fairly sure Hei probably kicked their ass at some point.

6:54 I always saw this part of the series as intended. You’re meant to recognize the contractors in the series do not match what people in the series say contractors are like. This goes for the dolls, too. They all show human sides viewers are led to believe early on shouldn’t be possible if information about these beings in the story is true.
I loved the world of the series. I’m not sure if I’d want the series to be cyberpunk. That’s not what the series is. Though, perhaps, if you want cyberpunk, you should pick up a cyberpunk series. Maybe you should pick up that Edgerunners show I keep hearing about.
Even if I disagree with you, I’m glad you’re making videos again. I love to see it!

Although I love this show, it is heavily flawed and they don't capitalize on a lot of their good ideas. So I don't necessarily disagree with you that its heavily flawed, most of the reasons I like it are heavily subjective but you kinda messed up on a few points. A major thing you mentioned a lot and got wrong is that while contractors are supposed to be emotionless its only new ones that actually are. Thats why Mai (or whatever fire girls name is) becomes extremely emotionless instantly but older contractors, as in ones that have been contractors longer, are far more human. They are evolving just like dolls and regaining their human emotions. Amber (time travel lady) outright says it at the end of the story. As other commenters mentioned rockets also get lost when they go up and no one knows for sure what happened to the real stars. I do agree making it a cyper punk world might have been much simpler but I feel like they actually use the phony night sky fairly well and use it to craft different narratives.

  • @SMcKnight95

Im kind of bias on the show, but i can also admit there are some flaws. That said it really grinds my gears with videos that overtly outline what they feel are negatives without taking a step back on the overall message. Example, the stars and the episodes involving it. There is a clear comparison to the allegory of the cave from plato. A premise the matrix trilogy heavily leans on, where dtb summarizes in a more simplic way through its illustration of the stars. Aside from this example there a numerous others. Im not expecting everyone to have backhand knowledge about all of its concepts and themes. In the same way bleach is ridiculed for being shallow with no character development. There is a narrative of show dont tell. Not everything lands perfectly but there is always a sense of there is something bigger going on in the background and you only get to see a small peice of its world. And dissecting a show like this without attemting to acknowledge its underlying themes seems like a bit of a disservice. Its like saying ergo proxy is boring because robots are supposed to be robots and its too slow because there is too much downtime from the characters traveling by flying boat. Its a criticism that ultimately misses the themes the show focuses on. Hopefully this makes sense. As for the second season, idk about everyone else but the reason it wasnt as good is because it took away some those elements of overarching evolution in contractors and dolls, as well the thematic traits that incorporate platos philosophy, personal ideologey vs governmental structure, the needs of the many vs the few and inevitably vs the idea of the future is what you make it. In lou of a pure character drivin, episodic narrative.

Regardless of the story what I loved about darker than black and still love is the atmosphere of the show even in the most intense moment it is lighthearted and exciting rather grim and dark (ironically)
There is an episode where Guy is collecting stories about the old stars and it is episodes like this gives the show a different flavor
Also Yoko Kano music did a lot of heavy lifting
So people who liked the show (like me) remember how it made them feel at the time not any story
And as a lonely immigrant of over 10 I connect with these now more than when I watched it originally

Wow. This was a strange take. The point of the contracters was an alagory for discrimination against an unkown/misunderstood minority group. The people see their strength and percieve them as dangerous and to keep them in check, dehumanize them.
Just like in reality the more you look into the minority group the more you realise that the main Idea about them is a half truth and there's more to them then the official narrative.
Like irl minority groups many of them see their only way of surviving in the larger society as leaning into their stereotype. In other words staying in their lane. On top of that some of them try to reclaim their own identity by actively embracing their distinctive qualities like in the case of November 11. Who doesn't just accept it but becomes proud of being a contracter.
Like in the case of black people where they had movements such as Black and Proud or Black is Beautiful where they rejected the official narrative that blackness was defective.
We even see a contracter challenging another contracter (hei) on the official narrative. This contracter even professes to having a dream where contracters can live in peace along side humans/non-contracters.
She emphasis that the differences between humans and contracters is superficial and if you go just a single layer beneath the surface you'll realise that they are virtualy the same.
Later the evening primrose goes even further demanding human rights for contracters and threatining to go public with their existance.
You say 'those are all irational human emotions'.
    Yeah that's the point!

The whole "contractors don't have emotions" thing could have been much better if it was in world propaganda and contractors were a known element to the general population. this review is a 2020 testament of that.
you focus far too much on powers when you should be questioning the renumeration each contractor pays for their power.
Just witnessing the renumeration leads to countless branches of a contractor's backstory. Branches that you need to contemplate on and maybe discuss with others to climb out on.
