@@renaharman4962 it's because trump has so much wrong with him it's impossible to even talk about Kamala in good faith with an interlocuter who refuses to admit and address the bad things about Trump.

Shapiro and Harris have consistently made the best and most reasonable cases for and against Trump in recent years. Both, here, make me realize that Kamala is simply a generic placeholder for people who dislike the former president.
A bit I agree, but that's like comparing an average granny smith apple with turd for a snack. The fact that he and kamala think that the American people don't know why they flooded this country with illegals but the fact that they are taking Americans tax money and placing them in hotels and then housing them and the millions of dollars they give them monthly is nit acceptable and is down right discussing and disgraceful we have homeless men and women vets who fought for this country and they ignore them and place murderers and rapist in homes. Well it’s adult discussion except when Harris is devolving into his delusion over Trump. His hatred is so strong and unreasonable that he makes himself sound like a child.
It wasn't a very interesting conversation, just Sam repeating "Donald Trump is Satan" in many different ways basically, heard it all for the last 8 years on a daily basis, it's not interesting anymore.
Only in the first 30 minutes and it actually worked in Ben’s favor! Later on Ben speaks equally. Read what people say, Ben convinced more people. She did her job, each person was allowed to answer the other
Also the fact she even invited these guests and validates people’s fears - I’m team Trump but look I know so many people who are terrified of him and don’t know how to vote. It’s fair that people are on the line. And now hopefully thanks to Sam being a bit ridiculous and Ben being very convincing, more people will vote Trump. This is probably the best, most articulate, most polite and thought-provoking discussion about politics that I’ve ever watched between someone with strong liberal values (Sam Harris) and someone with strong conservative values (Ben Shapiro). The host seems like she is someone that’s probably representative of an independent voter who has mixed values. Regardless of whose ideas resonate the most with you, I think this is a great example of how people that strongly disagree with each other’s political perspective should be engaging with each other. If people talked to each other about complex political topics with this amount of respect and politeness, I think the country would objectively be a better place.
I agree, and it’s all the more significant that Trump is clearly the better option for the country. Harris presents perhaps the most coherent and concise argument against Trump and for herself, yet it still falls flat against the facts supporting Trump. Ben doesn’t even need to go after Kamala here to make his point, although, at times, I personally wanted him to call out Kamala’sclear faults just as Harris tries to do with Trump. Overall Ben wins handily judges scores are 5-4 5-2 5-3 5-1. p.s. I am all 4 judges.
I think it is a dramatic reach to say that Shapiro has strong conservative views. He has completely sold out to the populist magas. These are worthless, garbage human beings, and do not have an ounce of traditional conservatism in their rhetoric or ideology.

So classy and respectful. The polar opposite of debates on Piers Morgan. I disagree with Sam's conclusion, but thank him for valuing honesty above winning.
Honesty? Where? He claims he'd vote for Romney over Harris if that were the race. We all know he'd be calling Romney a racist just like Biden did during the 2012 campaign.
Morgan injects egotism into every debate. Sam and Ben can speak freely to each other without having to expend mental resources on couching their opinions or not offending the other person. It’s impossible for me to deny that Shapiro is a very intelligent dude. Whether that be the filibuster, packing the court, and so on. It’s an odd take and one I’m surprised he hasn’t cleaned up. Edit: Sam Harris said it better than I did right after I wrote this. Clear double standard.
Shapiro explained the difference which basically was Trump said he was going to do crazy things but never actually did them. On the other hand Kamala/Biden ACTUALLY DID crazy things in their term and theirfor is much harder to shrug off.
Hey Sleepyhorses, I agree with you. Shapiro's rebuttal of Sam's arguments seems unreasonable. No. This is not a debate if one side is a sniveling disingenuous bad faith actor like Sam. An ideologically captured person does not make a great debate, it is better to just explore his issues in a conversation the way KK and FF did. A disarming conversation where people can see how far into a rabbit hole a supposed intellectual can dig himself into. What a waste of time
But it’s not even an actual debate over Kamala v Trump. It’s a discussion where one side is a hardline Trump supporter who is willing to excuse anything Trump does and the other side where a guy recognizes all of the insane and dangerous stuff from Trump and is picking Kamala simply because she isn’t Trump. Like what the fuck are people talking about? Sam did what he always does, provided a measured approach to laying out all of the moral, psychological, and political reasons why Trump is clearly not someone we want in office. Ben Shapiro just listed out issues he has with Kamala and argued that Trump isn’t as bad as his issues with Kamala. This moved the dial for absolutely nobody because one side can say, “Ben Shapiro is like any other Trump supporting MAGA figure, excuses any and everything Trump does that is fucked up”. And the other side can say, “Sam Harris just showed his TDS for 2 hours”. The comments here and on Sam and Ben’s respective subreddits only further prove this.

@@bbainter7880 It's reality. There's a reason you have a cabinet and a legislative branch. The same is true for Trump. It's how the system is supposed to work. Presidents can issue executive orders but they're supposed to be limited in scope. However successive presidents from both parties have increased the use of executive orders in recent years, largely because Congress has been relatively deadlocked. Unless you want the president to be a king, which is quite obviously not what the founding fathers wanted (some people did want to make Washington a king but he refused and established the peaceful transfer of power), then the institutions are vital.
In reality, it is the experts within the administration who make the critical decisions that apply to their area of expertise. The president just signs off on it.
I love these two guys they let each other talk. They are respectful. No excessive interrupting. These two should be the presidential candidates and Trump and Kamala should come on to talk and debate on who should be president 2024 podcaster Sam Harris or podcaster Ben Shapiro.
Sam put to Ben the question of Trump's incredibly immoral behavior, and said Ben would not have believed it if he were told he'd be voting for such a man. Note he never denied it. Instead he suggested Sam would be the same in regard to Kamala, who reportedly reviewed some documents for use of gendered language. Ben thinks nobody will notice the disparity here: Trump attempted a violent coup, and Harris reviewed some documents as VP. Trump attempted a violent coup, and Harris reviewed some documents as VP. This is the level of debate here? This is equivalency in Ben's mind?
He did not attempt a violent coup. Did he ask all his supporters to bring guns and kill anyone who opposed them? No, he said to protest in peace, to make their voice heard. He said it in his speech at the event. He said it on Twitter shortly after his speech. There is not evidence he wanted anyone hurt. Why would he? It would make him look bad. Did he tell anyone to ransack DC like BLM ransacked in DC and many major cities? No. He told everyone to peacefully protest at the capitol, so stop lying and regurgitating what you heard on the leftist news.
@zaxles that one throw away phrase came at the beginning of an hours long event. He told them the election was stolen. He told them they had to fight like hell for their country. And if there were still any doubt about his intentions, he told the violent mob he loved them and has supported them ever since. He voiced plans to pardon them. They did NOT misunderstand him His team helped pay for flights and accomodation. He knew many of them were armed. And at least none people have died as a direct result. He had fake electors lined up ready. Most of the lawyers involved have either been indicted or lost their bar license or both. He was trying to steal the country. It was a coup. And he's promised to attempt it again.
@zaxles the ONLY reason Trump included that phrase that makes up a fraction of a second out of a two hour speech, was as an attempt at plausible deniability. Sadly, many low education people fall for it. Or pretend to because they prefer they lies
Let your voices be heard peaceful and patriotically, you have to stop lying about Jan 6. And it makes no sense that you bring that up but say nothing about Harris saying the riots shouldn’t be stopped rather they should continue, as well as bailing out rioters in MN only for them to commit more murders. The BLM riots were so much worse than Jan 6
I think Ben "won" this debate generally but the one knock-down point that Sam has, which basically swings the whole thing in the other direction is the whole "guardrails" thing. Ben's right that we already had one Trump presidency and it was ok policy-wise, so that is a good indicator of what the second will be like but I also think Sam is even more right that the biggest reason for that ok-ness, was Trump constantly slamming into reasonable, patriotic, principled people around him. If you remove those people, and replace them with sycophants and grifters there is no telling what will happen. If Trump's second term was guaranteed to be like his first then he'd have my support, but since basically everyone that worked for him is sounding the alarm that he's dangerous and incompetent, that makes me really fear what's in store this next time around. I can get over the fact that Trump as a human being is just pure garbage, if the policy that comes out of it is ok, but if even that looks doubtful then I'm not sure what's left.
Both Sam and Ben have compelling arguments - I am one of those who are politically homeless at this point. I wish our country the best and fear the worst. Great debate. Thank you Bari, Sam, and Ben.

Shapiro totally disregards the criticism by Trump's generals as merely personal dislike. These guys are putting themselves on the line to say what they saw...
Not just generals. 40 of 44 of his self appointed senior cabinet officials. Most of them lifelong Republicans who supported him in 2016 and effectively committed political suicide by coming out against him. Even his own VP. Never before in history have we ever seen anything even close to that. In the past, if you heard so much as a peep from a former Secretary of State or chief of staff, for example, who spoke negatively of the President, it’d make the national news. Today, nearly the entire senior staff can sound the alarm and Trumps well planned “fake news” defense kicks in. It’s seriously astonishing. There are so many legitimate criticisms you can make against Trump, but that one in particular is one that I’m not sure how anyone can reconcile. And I say all of this as a lifelong conservative. Like Sam said, I guess it’s just “low information voters”. I don’t believe that Trump is going to “end democracy” or that he’s a “dictator”. But my goodness…we used to hold the office to such a higher standard.
Trump’s generals disobeyed his direct orders and undermined his authority. This was about more than personal dislike; it demonstrated a complete lack of competence and ethical failure in fulfilling their duties. If you stopped listening to your boss at work and ignored their orders, you’d expect to be fired.
Hi there, Firstly, a great point. But I don't think Ben came into this debate with any high hopes of changing anyone's mind, especially Bari's audience. He was certainly not hoping to change Sam's mind, because even if Jan 6 had been perfectly peaceful (hypothetically speaking, 'even if') all of Sam's concerns would have been precisely the same. Ben really put up a fight with only issues that truly concerned him, and was otherwise being unusually laid back (unusual for Ben, that is). Why I say so is, even I could see the counter-argument, for the criticism of 40 or so Generals. Ordinarily Ben wouldn't have had trouble doubting the Generals, but then again normally he wouldn't doubt the US intelligence officials either. Yet 50 or so intelligence officers signed on the report painting the Hunter-laptop story as Russian disinformation, and had it censored from public discourse at a very decisive moment. Now Ben could ask back, whether Sam would in any other circumstance doubt the integrity of US intelligence officials. I'm not making that argument, I'm just saying it's an argument. And underlining that Ben has become adept at picking his battles. Have a great day!
@ManicMindTrick he is speaking in the context of critical race theory and defended teaching it in the military. When he was speaking to congress, he blamed January 6th on "white rage"

It seems insane to me that Ben is basically risking the fate of a democratic nation and of the world in betting that smarter people will be around Trump to stop him from going bollocks and possibly get us in a nuclear war. I think he realizes how crazy this sounds but he’s just too invested. Thanks to Sam for making that point crystal clear
Exactly. Ben is not being honest, nor consistent with his moral standings and positions that he's sold to people throughout his relevancy. At this point, it sounds like he's just pandering to his audience for the sake of growing his "media empire." I'm convinced he only cares about money and influence. Trump will lower taxes for the wealthy, while Harris will increase them for millionaires ($1M+/yr). He's putting up smoke and mirrors to keep clout.
It’s more nuanced than this and it’s multi factored. Being surrounded by the right people is very important, just among so many other things, who’s to say Trump won’t be surrounded by great people in his second term??
I would like to present the counter argument that one of trump’s priorities he repeatedly makes on many of his long form podcast interviews is to prevent nuclear war and promote denuclearization. As for the cabinet and those who surround him, he stated he was handed the standard republican group in 2016 and bumped heads with let’s say half of them, so he’s getting rid of those half, the question is if you think he will surround himself with better or worse people, personally I’d say better but I can accept you’d argue worse

It’s impossible for me to deny that Shapiro is a very intelligent dude. It’s for that very reason that it strikes me as odd to hear him shrug Trump criticisms off by saying something to the effect of “Trump says a lot of stupid stuff” while implying the reality of these things happening is low or impossible…but then moves right into criticizing Harris for things she has “talked about doing” despite never actually doing them and the chance of successful execution being low just like with Trump. Whether that be the filibuster, packing the court, and so on.
It’s an odd take and one I’m surprised he hasn’t cleaned up.
Edit: Sam Harris said it better than I did right after I wrote this. Clear double standard.
He explained it clearly several times. On surface it’s easy to question the comments Trump makes versus the reality of his policies.
He’s choosing the lesser evil like all of us.
Seems like there's a lot of cognitive dissonance/in-congruence or maybe even dishonesty in him regarding Trump.
@@MrZ1234 it’s actually more simple than that. What do you think would happen when Kamala showed up in negotiations with Iran, Arabs, even Putin? They would die laughing. I've literally seen dems claiming it was rigged because Kamala got 10m fewer votes than Biden... there's also an even more fringe conspiracy that Trump had Elon use Starlink to allow them to hack the voting machines.
The reason it's obviously not taking off is because Kamala seems pretty relieved to have lost, she doesn't have the same revenge energy that Hillary had.
Wow. Fancy--a long, measured, intelligent debate between diametrically opposed pundits without hysterics and screaming and insults. There may be hope yet. Thank you, Bari Weiss.

I'm surprised Sam didn't push this point further, but when Ben admitted that it was good that Pence stopped Trump from overturning the 2020 election, the obvious follow up was to ask if he thought JD Vance would have held his ground as strongly. Because if not, that's a clear difference between a first and second term Trump.

Kind of true. But now I also want to get Ben Shapiro to actually stop the whataboutism “both sides did it”-- no. Stop equating what both presidents and both parties do.

But all this to ask you: should RFK jr not have been allowed to run because he had no votes? Not to mention, people can still vote for the general election which is what actually matters. You act like there is no other choice, and be honest: why do you even care who the Democratic candidate is? It's not like you wanted more option for the general election because you'd vote Trump no matter what.

@@RoadHater he must have forgotten the 8 months of death and destruction enabled and encouraged by the Democrats known as the “summer of love”. January the 6th was an obfuscation from that.

Did Harris just say it's okay that Biden can't debate, can't interview, can't campaign for President, but he's okay in the White House situation room during an emergency as long as he has enough time to think through the problem?
Sam believes that individuals do not make decisions - institutions do.
He has faith that Biden has never made a unilateral decision in the White House.
@@justifiably_stupid4998right and this is a categorial error on Sam's part. When thibgs get really bad and a critical decision must be made, we need a single capable individual who can make the call. We need that if only for purposes of accountability.
Honestly, anybody who trusts institutions at all after that one virus I won't name needs their head checked. Sam put all his chips on institutions, he lost big time and now can't afford to turn the ship of his worldview around.
@@justifiably_stupid4998 problem is that he spent the entire debate insisting that this will not happen if Trump is in office

Good news: a vote for Trump IS a vote for Ben, his dear friend he listens to very closely :)
It wasn’t a coup. “Peacefully and patriotically”
They did NOT misunderstand him
His team helped pay for flights and accomodation.

Hi there,
Firstly, a great point.
