This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). Welcome to Nightwish!!!! They are classified as Symphonic Metal! I am 65 years old, and have listened to rock, hard rock, heavy metal....everything that I could find from the time I was 8 years old back in 1965 listening to Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Nazareth, Steppenwolf and on and on! Nightwish is the blending of Heavy Metal...a Symphony....and whatever else you can think of! The man who writes most of the music is the Keyboard man, Tuomas. Floor Jansen is lead vocalist...yes...she's been classically trained...and she is the Valkyrie Queen, standing 6' tall with a voice that seemingly has no limits! Emppu is the lead guitarist, Marko, at that time is the bass player. Jukka is the drummer, who has quit drumming due to some major medical issues, but still is with the band in a managerial position. He was replace by Kai...one of his best friends who is an amazing drummer also! Marko is the Bass player, who is taking some time off, and has been replaced by a bass player named Jukka. They also added Troy at the same time Floor joined NW. If you ask what he plays...he says "Yes!" The man can sing and play many instruments! I discovered NW in early 2019...and I love their music! I am constantly surprised by the diversity of music they play....they are all fabulous artists in their own field...and I have yet to listen to a song of theirs I do not love! What I find funny is how he refers to this as "real music" and how mindboggled he is to hear this. Ya bud, real music played by really talented musicians exists, always has. The biggest difference between movie-music and Nightwish are - Nightwish are doing this LIVE, over and over again. They have over 100 incredible stories that they can tell - live!! All their music are a journey you experience. The front woman Floor, are probably the most versatile, powerful, skilled, talented and professional storyteller ever. She is unique. And so are the rest of the band. Tuomas who writes and composes nearly all their music, are a pure genius - but all of them have put their personality and personal touch into the songs. @@gerardvbrakel8774 It is when the "back track" is the London Philharmonic Orchestra. They obviously can't tour with Nightwish, but they record the backing orchestral music exclusively for them, which is composed by Toumas. He also arranges the music, and the chorus vocals for all the songs.

She's Dutch, the band is from Finland. 90-95% is written and composed by Tuomas Holopainen(keyboards) , including the orchestral backing tracks recorded with the London Philharmonic. The time signatures in the intro that you were wondering about is 6/8, 6/8, 5/8, 6/8 then 4/4, 4/4, 3/4, 4/4, then reduced tempo straight 4. This is only the tip of what she and the band can do. Every song is different, different sounds, styles ,instruments ,and singers. The flaming bulls head is the logo of the venue, Wacken Open Air , in Germany. About 82k in the crowd. Floor had only been with the band about 10 months here, having taken over mid tour. All the songs were written for one of the first 2 female lead singers, she added to the original and made them her own. Nightwish is from Finland. The Frontwoman Uber Soprano Floor Jansen is Dutch. She was in her early 30s in this concert. She has three+ octaves. She has had many years of operatic/Classical/modern Rock experience. Floor is 6'1" in flats, 6'4"-6'5" in spikes. Former competitive bodybuilder, she still works out as you can tell from her shoulders traps quads and arms. Floor is married to Hannes van Dahl, 6'7" drummer for the Swedish Metal/Rock band Sabaton. For a reality trip back in time to the First World War, pull up their #1 hit Christmas Truce. I warn you, that video is not for the squeamish. The ending credits are long, but Floor is named towards the end and she is the one who is singing them. Nightwish was formed in 1996 by the keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Finnish operatic Soprano Tarja Turunen was co-founder and first vocalist. Swedish rock singer Anette Olzon was #2. And now the one who is called the most accomplished, beautiful, empathetic, versatile vocalist in the Symphonic Metal genre, Floor Jansen, takes stages all over the world.
Former competitive bodybuilder? Where did you get that? I think she was a swimmer (don't really remember if she was competitive or not), but have you ever seen her more muscular than in 2023? If she was a competitive body builder at some point, she should have gone from muscular to not so muscular, but for me it seems another way around. She was quite thin back in 2000-2010.

This is symphonic metal not rock. Floor Jansen is the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal. There is no better one in the world. She can really sing anything she wants. She sounds better live than others in the studio. From the highest notes to growling. She also sings the phone book to you and you can't get enough of it. In fact, she has already done that. She is one of the dearest, most honest and down-to-earth people in this business. She belongs to the highly sensitive people is very emphatic. That's one reason why her voice hits like this. She brings these feelings across as she sings.

Nightwish was great with their original singer Tarja, but Floor and her amazing voice brought them to another level honestly, I feel like their music went to an even higher level which is really saying something. I also love it that Floor and Tarja are good friends.
tarja is forever the queen, who brought the name to fame. But floor has found her place. I would not compare the ladies against each other theyre both good.

Thomas Holopainen is the keyboardist and writes/ composes at least 95% of their music. He is known to Nightwish fans as "the Mozart of metal". Nightwish has been in existence since 1996. What is that I hear? The footsteps of the incredible fans of Nightwish known as the #Nightwish Army. The general Gabriel B. Should be along soon and will fill you in. He won't steer you wrong. You have no idea what you just walked in to. This barely scratches the surface of what this band, and Floor Jansen (lead singer) are capable of. Each song will be better than the last, regardless of which order you play them in. Hopefully Gabriel will be by to leave his fantastic introductory posts. Nightwish has had 3 singers, all of them great, and their current singer (seen here) does some amazing solo stuff as well (as do several other band members, most notably Marko, the bass player). I really hope you continue your NW journey! Also, you can try to imagine how good this is live, but when you finally get there and see this in person, it is even better than you can imagine.

I became a fan after Floor joined. I knew a couple of their songs, but never really checked them out. But when I heard a Dutchie took over from Annette.... it lured me in. What a brilliant fit. Always reminds me of when an interviewer asked Tuomas to say something about Floor joining the band. He said: "Floor is home."
Tuomas/keyboards/founder/composer was going to become a biologist until he went to a Metallica and Guns & Roses concert. In 1996 he founded the Symphonic Metal band Nightwish. Every member of this group is in another level. They go light, medium and heavy. This was medium. Tuomas does not write filler songs. Every one is different from the last one and is amazing. 😊🤘
Her husband is the Drummer for Sabaton, they are an amazing power metal band that sing about Epic history real Battles and real Heroes. Battles like Verdun, the US Marines in WW1, the Winged Hassars ect.
From 14:12 on is Improvised ....the first singer Tarja , who the song was written for does not do it in her version . Also she was with the band for only 10 months when they did this show .....she replaced the 2nd singer Anette who was basically let go while she was pregnant and wanted to pospone the tour but they weren't having that ....so they Grabbed Floor ( best thing they ever did) who was available at the time and she learned theyre whole setlist in 48 hrs .
Great to see you guys reacting to Nightwish they are a Symphonic metal group that's metal with Symphony and some Opera/classical music stuff thrown in. FLOOR Jansen pronounced Yansen. Can sing any Genre at the moment she is singing a Pop style of music in her solo album. And yes she is still in Nightwish. Through them I had discovered other great groups like Sabaton, Epica, Ayreon just to name a few honestly if I typed the list down it would be as long as my arm. Thank you for your reaction.
@@joetorres3457 she has sung occasionlly arias, there are only two to find one YT as far as I know, but to perform opera is something different, meaning being on a theatre stage and sing through the whole two or three hours. I just wanted to make clear that Floor herself said that she is not an opera singer.

She is also an absolutely lovely, funny, smart and grounded person (in fact all the band members are exceedingly down to earth individuals). She has her own channel here on RUclips where she has posted covers of songs as well as her solo stuff. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter/composer and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. They are hugely popular across in most of the world but for some reason still not very well known in the US. The name of the genre they generally belong to is Symphonic Metal but their discography is EXTREMELY varied. The "Symphonic" backing tracks of their music is composed in the majority by Tuomas and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This was the 13th song in this particular set, Floor is belting notes like that the entire set. Nighwish are almost always better experienced with LIVE versions of their songs if at all possible. Most new reactors are better off sticking with the Wacken 2013 set to begin with as it offers a taste of a lot of what Nightwish has to offer, they have multiple concerts though all of which are superb. Some suggestions for more songs for you to continue your journey would be Storytime, Romanticide, Ever Dream, Ghost River, I Wish I had an Angel, Song of Myself, Dark Chest of Wonders, I Want My Tears Back and Amaranth all from Wacken 2013 (pronounced Vacken). Saying that, anything from Wacken 2013 is golden really to start, there's a reason why that set is pretty legendary at this point, 82,000 people were in attendance. Beware of some messed up slowed down versions of the Wacken 2013 songs as they can take the energy right out of the performances, just check the comments on them and I'm sure someone will mention if it's a slowed down version. Your choice obviously but I'd avoid Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth for now until you are more familiar with the band and it's history, they will make a lot more sense and be more enjoyable for you that way. Prepare for the Nightwish army to arrive and enjoy your Nightwish journey, I know I did!😎🤘

The Orchestral Backing is done by the London Symphonic Orchestra, in some of Nightwish songs the vocal backing like in the song "STORYTIME " is done by a children's choir from London. It makes one feel proud to be British. I love Nightwish and their keyboard player who is the founder of Nightwish and also the composer of nearly every Nightwish song is a musical genius and is known as the new Beethoven. As for Floor Jansen the female singer she in my opinion is the greatest Female singer of all time, she is alongside the greatest Male singer of all time the great Freddie Mercury from the band Queen to me the greatest British band of all time. Floor is not only the greatest female singer of all time but in my opinion the most beautiful woman on the planet, she is a 6ft 1inch Dutch Goddess who is absolutely perfect and I am so in love with her Angelic voice, her husband from my favourite band Sabaton plays the drums for them and he is a brilliant drummer, his name is Hannes van Dahl. Nightwish are one band you should never underestimate, they can play anything they want and do it better than most if not all even when they stray from the Symphonic Metal, Floor could sing like Amy Lee but Amy Lee could not sing like Floor. Floor is a natural Empath and broadcasts her feelings so you not only hear songs but you FEEL them.

The singer is Floor Jensen. She is a Valkyrie. She sounds inhuman for the very simple reason that she's partially divine. The keyboardist is the songwriter, Toumas. As far as I can tell, he pioneered the genre....I could be wrong. It is a travesty that this isn't played in the States. These guys are better than the vast majority of metal musicians out there. I so want to see them live....
Time signature in beginning seems 15/4, or 4/4, 4/4, 3/4, 4/4, I love how you both instantly dig this music, very melodic metal. If you like a variety of singers, try Ayreon, The Day That The World Breaks Downs (11 vocalists).

I've even seen where it was interpreted as 12/8 to 11/8 then back. when it drops to 4, some have said it's 8/4 to 7/4.. so it is really open to interpretation.. regardless, the change of feel with time signature is phenomenal here. Wait until they get a load of Romanticide or The Islander or Phantom of the Opera. They aren't ready for the other other two big ones yet!
Welcome to Nightwish! The genre is commonly called Symphonic Metal. It contains elements of metal, rock, classical, and prog. More popular in Europe, especially Northern Europe than here. But it has its steadily building US fanbase. Nightwish is from Finland. Their current vocalist Floor Jansen (all the statuesque 6’ of her) who you’re watching here is Dutch. Floor can effortlessly swing everything from opera to Death Metal growling with all stops in between.
Metallica was a good guess. Before forming the band Tuomas Holopainen (man behind the keyboard and bands compositions) was an exchange student in Kansas and after his friends dragged him to Metallica concert he was hooked for life. According to him it was one of the big inspirations for forming Nightwish: "METALLICA changed my life in many ways. I don't think I would be here without METALLICA".

"Where do you find that music? Where is it played?" Easy: Outside the world of Rap and Pop. It's called Metal (Symphonic Metal in this case) and quite common if you are able to look beyond your own nose. Which you did here. So welcome to your glimpse on the other side of music. The one that is actualy about the music and not the artist. I once read an article about a music scientist that seemed actualy surprised to find that people listening to metal and people listening to classical music were quite often the same people... i only thought "Wow, you don't say?" :D There is a huge intersection between metal. classic and what you call "movie music", the soundtrack style, often also called Epic Music. I IS about the music, and although Floor, the recent singer of Nightwish, has a large fanbase, the true mastermind behind this is Tuomas, the composer and keyboarder, but he doesn't seek attention. He is just happy to let the music do its work.

welcome to the fantastic symphonic metal universe of Nightwish Band, their live performances are some of the things that come so close to epic that they get to be mythical and of course Floor Jansen, queen of the stage and goddess of music, she can sing anything in any musical style she wants (WARNING! her voice, her stage presence, her charisma, in one word: her "spell" is highly addictive). this concert (wacken 2013) is incredibly epic and deserves to be watched and reacted entirely, song by song, in particular I suggest these three songs: "song of myself", "storytime" and "ever dream" this performance of "ghost love score" is one of the three best performances of the nightwish band, together with "the poet and the pendulum" from 2015 concert at the london wembley arena and "the greatest show on earth" from 2015 concert in tampere - finland (actually there is a fourth best performance: "dead boy's poem" from the 2018 concert in buenos aires).

Hi guys, just found your channel and I really liked your style. You found my favorite band of all time and I’m really glad that you liked it. I always smile when I hear people trying to put Nightwish in a gengre. If you ask me, it’s simply not possible. Their songs are so diffrent that they can’t be contained into any one little box. So I if you ask me, Nightwish is a gengre as well as a band. But if you want a preexisting gengre it would be symphonic metal. I really think you should do some more reactions to their music and my suggestion is Romanticide from the same show as this song (Wacken Open Air 2013). Keep being awesome guys!

Floor Jansen is undoubtedly a powerhouse. She is incredibly versatile with her voice and has been an amazing addition to Nightwish. While most of Nightwish's catalog is female vocal heavy, their former bassist Marco Hietala has a very good voice which is showcased in the songs "The Islander" ,"Phantom of the Opera", and a few other songs. He is also featured in a few songs by a band called Delain ("Sing to Me" and "The Gathering").

Found out about Nightwish watching this video by a reactor in 2019. Welcome to Our Beautiful Valkyrie Queen Floor. She's an awesome person inside and out. I also got into the 1st singer's voice and solo stuff. I found more European musicians. She's 6ft. P.S The bassist also sings and is amazing. He's not in the band any more he quit in January 2020 or 21.She has 1 year of opera and theater training. She's been around since she was 16 and will be 42 in February. You haven't seen anything yet. I'm happy to have run into symphonic metal in my teens about 20 years ago and totally fell in love. Though it would have been hard to miss Nightwish here in Finland where they are from. They were and still are huge here. They were played in maistream radio stations a lot back then.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Welcome to Nightwish!!!! They are classified as Symphonic Metal! I am 65 years old, and have listened to rock, hard rock, heavy metal....everything that I could find from the time I was 8 years old back in 1965 listening to Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Nazareth, Steppenwolf and on and on! Nightwish is the blending of Heavy Metal...a Symphony....and whatever else you can think of! The man who writes most of the music is the Keyboard man, Tuomas. Floor Jansen is lead vocalist...yes...she's been classically trained...and she is the Valkyrie Queen, standing 6' tall with a voice that seemingly has no limits! Emppu is the lead guitarist, Marko, at that time is the bass player. Jukka is the drummer, who has quit drumming due to some major medical issues, but still is with the band in a managerial position. He was replace by Kai...one of his best friends who is an amazing drummer also! Marko is the Bass player, who is taking some time off, and has been replaced by a bass player named Jukka. They also added Troy at the same time Floor joined NW. If you ask what he plays...he says "Yes!" The man can sing and play many instruments!
I discovered NW in early 2019...and I love their music! I am constantly surprised by the diversity of music they play....they are all fabulous artists in their own field...and I have yet to listen to a song of theirs I do not love!

Nightwish is from Finland. The Frontwoman Uber Soprano Floor Jansen is Dutch. She was in her early 30s in this concert. She has three+ octaves. She has had many years of operatic/Classical/modern Rock experience.
Floor is 6'1" in flats, 6'4"-6'5" in spikes. Former competitive bodybuilder, she still works out as you can tell from her shoulders traps quads and arms.
Floor is married to Hannes van Dahl, 6'7" drummer for the Swedish Metal/Rock band Sabaton. For a reality trip back in time to the First World War, pull up their #1 hit Christmas Truce. I warn you, that video is not for the squeamish. The ending credits are long, but Floor is named towards the end and she is the one who is singing them.
Nightwish was formed in 1996 by the keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Finnish operatic Soprano Tarja Turunen was co-founder and first vocalist. Swedish rock singer Anette Olzon was #2. And now the one who is called the most accomplished, beautiful, empathetic, versatile vocalist in the Symphonic Metal genre, Floor Jansen, takes stages all over the world.
Former competitive bodybuilder? Where did you get that? I think she was a swimmer (don't really remember if she was competitive or not), but have you ever seen her more muscular than in 2023? If she was a competitive body builder at some point, she should have gone from muscular to not so muscular, but for me it seems another way around. She was quite thin back in 2000-2010.

Floor Jansen is the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal. There is no better one in the world. She can really sing anything she wants. She sounds better live than others in the studio. From the highest notes to growling. She also sings the phone book to you and you can't get enough of it. In fact, she has already done that. She is one of the dearest, most honest and down-to-earth people in this business. She belongs to the highly sensitive people is very emphatic. That's one reason why her voice hits like this. She brings these feelings across as she sings.

You have no idea what you just walked in to. This barely scratches the surface of what this band, and Floor Jansen (lead singer) are capable of. Each song will be better than the last, regardless of which order you play them in. Hopefully Gabriel will be by to leave his fantastic introductory posts. Nightwish has had 3 singers, all of them great, and their current singer (seen here) does some amazing solo stuff as well (as do several other band members, most notably Marko, the bass player). I really hope you continue your NW journey!
Also, you can try to imagine how good this is live, but when you finally get there and see this in person, it is even better than you can imagine.

I became a fan after Floor joined. I knew a couple of their songs, but never really checked them out. But when I heard a Dutchie took over from Annette.... it lured me in. What a brilliant fit. Always reminds me of when an interviewer asked Tuomas to say something about Floor joining the band. He said: "Floor is home."

Tuomas/keyboards/founder/composer was going to become a biologist until he went to a Metallica and Guns & Roses concert. In 1996 he founded the Symphonic Metal band Nightwish. Every member of this group is in another level. They go light, medium and heavy. This was medium. Tuomas does not write filler songs. Every one is different from the last one and is amazing. 😊🤘
Her husband is the Drummer for Sabaton, they are an amazing power metal band that sing about Epic history real Battles and real Heroes. Battles like Verdun, the US Marines in WW1, the Winged Hassars ect.
Add "No bullets fly", "Night witches", "Bismarck" and many others. These three tracks also feature epic videos.
And Tuomas is maried to the front of Auri~
From 14:12 on is Improvised ....the first singer Tarja , who the song was written for does not do it in her version .
Also she was with the band for only 10 months when they did this show .....she replaced the 2nd singer Anette who was basically let go while she was pregnant and wanted to pospone the tour but they weren't having that ....so they Grabbed Floor ( best thing they ever did) who was available at the time and she learned theyre whole setlist in 48 hrs .
Great to see you guys reacting to Nightwish they are a Symphonic metal group that's metal with Symphony and some Opera/classical music stuff thrown in. FLOOR Jansen pronounced Yansen. Can sing any Genre at the moment she is singing a Pop style of music in her solo album. And yes she is still in Nightwish. She is NOT an opera singer, only got a good training. But she was a metal singer all her career.

@@joetorres3457 she has sung occasionlly arias, there are only two to find one YT as far as I know, but to perform opera is something different, meaning being on a theatre stage and sing through the whole two or three hours. I just wanted to make clear that Floor herself said that she is not an opera singer.

I saw them in Minneapolis in May this year. 2,000 or 80,000 people - they perform with their whole selves on stage. Floor Jansen IS the range.

Nightwish is a glorious rabbit hole of awesome, with world class song-writing, musicianship and arguably (or unarguably to most who've heard her enough😉) the best and most versatile female vocalist alive today (maybe ever), the Valkyrie Queen of metal herself Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen). Floor is a classically trained soprano and has a vocal range of more than 3 octaves (C3 to F6+).
Floor is the third female vocalist that Nightwish have had (and my personal favourite), she was only with them on tour for 10 months at this point and officially joined the band in 2013, she is still with them today.
The vocalists are/were -
Tarja Turunen - (1996-2005) - (Finland) - Very operatic focused vocals.
Anette Olzon - (2007-2012) - (Sweden) - More pop-centric vocals.
Floor Jansen - (2012-Present) - (Netherlands) - Extremely diverse vocals, from deep growls to full on opera.

Floor herself is Dutch and is another glorious goldmine of awesome as she has a lot of non-Nightwish related stuff (including 2 other bands, After Forever & ReVamp) and a recently launched solo career that she has been involved that are all pretty amazing as well, she is also an accomplished song writer herself. She is also an absolutely lovely, funny, smart and grounded person (in fact all the band members are exceedingly down to earth individuals). She has her own channel here on RUclips where she has posted covers of songs as well as her solo stuff.
The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter/composer and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen.
They are hugely popular across in most of the world but for some reason still not very well known in the US.
The name of the genre they generally belong to is Symphonic Metal but their discography is EXTREMELY varied.
The "Symphonic" backing tracks of their music is composed in the majority by Tuomas and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
This was the 13th song in this particular set, Floor is belting notes like that the entire set.
Nighwish are almost always better experienced with LIVE versions of their songs if at all possible.
Most new reactors are better off sticking with the Wacken 2013 set to begin with as it offers a taste of a lot of what Nightwish has to offer, they have multiple concerts though all of which are superb.
Some suggestions for more songs for you to continue your journey would be Storytime, Romanticide, Ever Dream, Ghost River, I Wish I had an Angel, Song of Myself, Dark Chest of Wonders, I Want My Tears Back and Amaranth all from Wacken 2013 (pronounced Vacken).
Saying that, anything from Wacken 2013 is golden really to start, there's a reason why that set is pretty legendary at this point, 82,000 people were in attendance.
Beware of some messed up slowed down versions of the Wacken 2013 songs as they can take the energy right out of the performances, just check the comments on them and I'm sure someone will mention if it's a slowed down version.
Your choice obviously but I'd avoid Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth for now until you are more familiar with the band and it's history, they will make a lot more sense and be more enjoyable for you that way.

The Orchestral Backing is done by the London Symphonic Orchestra, in some of Nightwish songs the vocal backing like in the song "STORYTIME " is done by a children's choir from London. It makes one feel proud to be British. I love Nightwish and their keyboard player who is the founder of Nightwish and also the composer of nearly every Nightwish song is a musical genius and is known as the new Beethoven. As for Floor Jansen the female singer she in my opinion is the greatest Female singer of all time, she is alongside the greatest Male singer of all time the great Freddie Mercury from the band Queen to me the greatest British band of all time. Floor is not only the greatest female singer of all time but in my opinion the most beautiful woman on the planet, she is a 6ft 1inch Dutch Goddess who is absolutely perfect and I am so in love with her Angelic voice, her husband from my favourite band Sabaton plays the drums for them and he is a brilliant drummer, his name is Hannes van Dahl. Nightwish are one band you should never underestimate, they can play anything they want and do it better than most if not all even when they stray from the Symphonic Metal, Floor could sing like Amy Lee but Amy Lee could not sing like Floor. Floor is a natural Empath and broadcasts her feelings so you not only hear songs but you FEEL them.

The singer is Floor Jensen. She is a Valkyrie. She sounds inhuman for the very simple reason that she's partially divine. The keyboardist is the songwriter, Toumas. As far as I can tell, he pioneered the genre....I could be wrong. It is a travesty that this isn't played in the States. These guys are better than the vast majority of metal musicians out there. I so want to see them live....

Time signature in beginning seems 15/4, or 4/4, 4/4, 3/4, 4/4, I love how you both instantly dig this music, very melodic metal. If you like a variety of singers, try Ayreon, The Day That The World Breaks Downs (11 vocalists).
The beginning was 2/3 timing. Then 4/4 then 3/4 finally 4/4.
@@DarthVadersHeart better yet, 2 measures of 6/8, a measure of 5/8, then back to 6/8. When the drums kick in, it's 2 measures of 4/4, a measure of 3/4, then back to 4/4.

@@DarthVadersHeart I agree. I've even seen where it was interpreted as 12/8 to 11/8 then back. when it drops to 4, some have said it's 8/4 to 7/4.. so it is really open to interpretation.. regardless, the change of feel with time signature is phenomenal here.

Welcome to Nightwish! The genre is commonly called Symphonic Metal. It contains elements of metal, rock, classical, and prog. More popular in Europe, especially Northern Europe than here. But it has its steadily building US fanbase. Nightwish is from Finland. Their current vocalist Floor Jansen (all the statuesque 6’ of her) who you’re watching here is Dutch. Floor can effortlessly swing everything from opera to Death Metal growling with all stops in between.
Metallica was a good guess. Before forming the band Tuomas Holopainen (man behind the keyboard and bands compositions) was an exchange student in Kansas and after his friends dragged him to Metallica concert he was hooked for life. According to him it was one of the big inspirations for forming Nightwish: "METALLICA changed my life in many ways. I don't think I would be here without METALLICA".
Yay Nightwish. Every song is different and they are exceptionally talented.

It's called Metal (Symphonic Metal in this case) and quite common if you are able to look beyond your own nose. Which you did here. So welcome to your glimpse on the other side of music. The one that is actualy about the music and not the artist.
I once read an article about a music scientist that seemed actualy surprised to find that people listening to metal and people listening to classical music were quite often the same people... i only thought "Wow, you don't say?" :D There is a huge intersection between metal. classic and what you call "movie music", the soundtrack style, often also called Epic Music.
I IS about the music, and although Floor, the recent singer of Nightwish, has a large fanbase, the true mastermind behind this is Tuomas, the composer and keyboarder, but he doesn't seek attention. He is just happy to let the music do its work.
This was back in 2013 when floor first joined this was a set they did at the wahen festival in Germany they were the headliners the band is from Finland and floor is Dutch

this concert (wacken 2013) is incredibly epic and deserves to be watched and reacted entirely, song by song, in particular I suggest these three songs: "song of myself", "storytime" and "ever dream"
this performance of "ghost love score" is one of the three best performances of the nightwish band, together with "the poet and the pendulum" from 2015 concert at the london wembley arena and "the greatest show on earth" from 2015 concert in tampere - finland (actually there is a fourth best performance: "dead boy's poem" from the 2018 concert in buenos aires).

You found my favorite band of all time and I’m really glad that you liked it. I always smile when I hear people trying to put Nightwish in a gengre. If you ask me, it’s simply not possible. Their songs are so diffrent that they can’t be contained into any one little box. So I if you ask me, Nightwish is a gengre as well as a band.
But if you want a preexisting gengre it would be symphonic metal.
I really think you should do some more reactions to their music and my suggestion is Romanticide from the same show as this song (Wacken Open Air 2013).

Floor Jansen is undoubtedly a powerhouse. She is incredibly versatile with her voice and has been an amazing addition to Nightwish.
While most of Nightwish's catalog is female vocal heavy, their former bassist Marco Hietala has a very good voice which is showcased in the songs "The Islander" ,"Phantom of the Opera", and a few other songs. He is also featured in a few songs by a band called Delain ("Sing to Me" and "The Gathering").

Found out about Nightwish watching this video by a reactor in 2019. Welcome to Our Beautiful Valkyrie Queen Floor. She's an awesome person inside and out. I also got into the 1st singer's voice and solo stuff. I found more European musicians. She's 6ft. P.S The bassist also sings and is amazing. He's not in the band any more he quit in January 2020 or 21.She has 1 year of opera and theater training. She's been around since she was 16 and will be 42 in February. You haven't seen anything yet. The guitarist Emppu only plays what is required for the song. This is Floor's favorite song. Tuomas is called The Metal Mozart

I'm happy to have run into symphonic metal in my teens about 20 years ago and totally fell in love. Though it would have been hard to miss Nightwish here in Finland where they are from. They were and still are huge here. They were played in maistream radio stations a lot back then.
The part that gets way overlooked. Floor did THAT an hour or so into the show.

You ain't seen nothing yet: still more than 20 super high level performances to go from this band. Metal is booming. It's full of all kinds of genres. This Ghost love score is a thing on the tube. Pisces live studio version from Jinjer even more (completely different vibe). Especially cause they are world class and so musically refined. For me the interest in the heavier league of music started 2 years ago and i'am still bumping in to big surprises. Either way, have fun and take care.
