- In this episode we compare the relative performance of the @minisforumofficial BD790i SE and its 16 core (32 Thread) Ryzen 9 7940HX Mobile CPU, to the still-strong i7 12700KF in several tests to answer the question: are Desktop CPUs always the right choice for gaming machines, or can MODT (Mobile-on-Desktop) platforms provide a compelling alternative?

This dude is solid. Can't wait to see him do a review of the Minisforum V3. I'd love to hear some thoughtful analysis of it's role as a productivity and note taking device.
He may be solid but his camera man isn't even looking where the temps or wattages are displayed lol
This is why I get all my gaming hardware information from Gigabrain Tech. And look at that video editing!
Editor is hot af
I game at high refresh 4k with an 11900k and 3090ti and the 253w option for the i9 absolutely helps when under full load on getting max frames. Sometimes up to a dozen or more.
Even though its not an i9, You might be able to get even more performance out of that 12700kf with that pink cooler if you toss one of those $6 Thermalright contact frames on it, i noticed a huge difference in temps with my 13900k and Arctic LF2 360MM AIO that could thermal throttle under a cinebench all core run, now it doesnt go over 80⁰ C at the full 253w PL1 and PL2, and ive seen reports it also greatly helps folks who are aircooling these cpus
I think you absolutely right on this. I used a contact frame recently on an AMD CPU and the temperatures were lowered greatly.
I have the same motherboard and i can say the cpu on this is fast and snappy. Pair with with a low latency cl38 5200mt ram and a fast nvme gen4 ssd and you’ll breeze through a lot of tasks. Especially if you pair this with a streamlined win11 ltsc and you’ll have more than enough room for work and play
The bd790i-se costs as low as 329 usd all in. which is lower than higher-end/power hungry desktop cpus for both amd and intel which can perform lower and hotter than the 7940hx cpu.
1 Q: what does ltsc mean in this context?
2: you’re absolutely right. Considering that a 7950x + motherboard costs SIGNIFICANTLY more than this.. this feels like the real hack.
@@gigabraintech LTSC is aimed at corporate deployments where OS upgrades are not needed. given the current state of consumer windows 10/11 systems, wherein microsoft retires older versions via windows update or forced upgrade (ex: feature update). LTSC exclusively offers long term patches.
out of the box, LTSC (or the earlier LTSB) doesn't have Windows Store and other bundled Windows 11 bloat (ex: AI) as well. it behaves like a modernized Windows 7 pro. though LTSC is by default are Enterprise editions. this results in a more leaner OS.
@@gigabraintech yeah, i checked now at amazon and the 7950x alone costs 496 USD which is absurd. since i prefer minimalism than a hulking desktop, this BD790iSE is heaven sent.
add: even the 12-core 7900x which costs 351 usd is more expensive than this barebones setup.
Wow-- suddenly I really want LTSC for me
This right here. The amount of compute on tap with the BD790i combo is absolutely astonishing for the price.
OT : i purchased a minisforum MSSA156 to pair with this itx-based setup :)
it costs 173 USD at the moment - MINISFORUM10
It's a portable 15in 2k@144hz touchscreen ips display
I'll check it out, seems like a really interesting product.
