    I've had a 16 Golf R manual for 18 months. My first mod was an APR Stage 1, two weeks after taking delivery. For about $800 including installation (by the dealer's tuner shop), the difference was day and night! Adding over 60 HP and 100 FT LBS torque was a supremely cost-effective mod. Recently I had the same shop add a FMIC and CAI (both APR) mainly so I could keep my gains through the Florida summer heat. There was a noticeable bump in power and, no doubt, my turbo and engine will thank me over the long summer. I tentatively plan to go Stage 2 (with downpipe) within a year or so but will have to upgrade the clutch which will add considerable cost to the Stage 2. Right now the car's running great and I'm not in a huge hurry so I may wait until my clutch is slipping bad enough to warrant the outlay.

    Some tuning companies offer steep discounts on their stage 2 tune if you've already purchased their stage 1 tune. In fact, for some, you only pay the difference between the two, so you're not losing any money by going stage 1 first.

    First mods on my TT Quattro were brass shifter bushings. Couple the bushings with the dogbone insert makes for a really crisp shifter. After that I got a 42dd turboback and a cts front mount. Then a 4bar fpr and a stage 2 tune from motoza performance. Pulls so strong now and is a really fun time. Now I'm going hybrid frankenturbo and I'm really excited as to how it will pull.

    For my mk5 GTI i went stage1 and R8 coils + ngk iridium ix plugs. I want to put an S3 intercooler (or bigger) and a downpipe 200 cell with catback. I had a BMC sport filter but since I live in the countryside it doesn't catch dirt so I went back to paper filter and I'm going to keep paper filter while modding. Could look after a TTS intake with K04. Swap with the CDL from mk6 R/TTS/S3. Now that's a dream, most realistic, economical, reliable thing is ecu, a larger intake (you know the carbon look ones), stock filter and downpipe. I went for stickier tyres because I live in the countryside and the GTI is already low enough.

    Quick and simple, Get the Stage 2 by Revo.
    a down-pipe, intake, and lower torque mount for your transmission. (if you wanna go crazy get the BSH engine mounts, car will run like a dump truck for 3 months before the mounts set in tho) :D
    You will Thank me later.
    Orrr you can just get a intake and stage 1 tune by Revo.
    Who knows, later on if you feel like it, you can get the stage 2 tune upgrade for just $300.

    I’d say I’d you have a mk5 or mk6 gti with higher mileage, definitely get engine and trans mounts, dogbone and replace your from lower control arm bushing or upgrade them to S3 bushing. I’m not tune but I felts a big difference in power delivery and response with new mounts and I have 0 wheel hop. Event though the mounts are stiffer, the car feels a lot smoother to drive in most cases.

    It depends on your tuner. If a stage 1 tune is $350 and stage 2 is $450 and they only charge you the difference to go up to stage 2 then no stage 1 is not a waste. You have to spend more money to get to stage 2 so why not enjoy stage 1 until you have the money/parts to go to stage 2? Also, maintenance is a difference maker, if you have bad plugs, a boost leak or vacuum leak you'll be pretty disappointed in a tune that you've spent money on. Just my 2c.

    • @DaytonCarCare
      @DaytonCarCare 7 лет назад +1

      You don't need a tune if only mounting a test pipe. You'll have to get a o2 adapter for the lower sensor if you don't want to trigger a CEL. Though if you want it done properly any mod to your engine you should prepare for dyno tunes for max performance. Many people do a flash static tune to their car that was mapped from another similar car, it may work but not the proper way to do it.

  • @DaytonCarCare

    • @MrTeknown
      @MrTeknown 7 лет назад +9

      Better tyres it's number one then the brakes, if they are worn out, change them, if not, it's waste of money. Remap is next. I don't really like the idea of high flow air filters, but people use kn and they seem to love it. If your shocks are bad, you can replace it with some coilovers, lower it a little. But if your suspension is still good, I feel like it's not a huge deal. Exaust and turbo if you want more power but you will be limited from a lot of stuff and it becomes expensive and not sure how reliable for a daily.

    1. Intake
    2. Down pipe
    3. Stage 2 tune (expensive)
    4. Quick shift (I like this one. The stock long pull is painful at times)
    5. Lower, wheels and shocks (mild expensive)

    ...Now since then, I got a SouthBend Stage 2 Endurance clutch, a K04 and a Wavetrac (which I HIGHY recommend) but honestly anyone with a TSI motor should budget a clutch in, just in case.

    Spot on, but track or at least street density mounts are requirement for stage 2 power. Due to significant increase of torque, excessive movement of the soft stock transmission and engine mounts will cause deterioration of other parts. The polyurethane lower transmission mounts do not last long either, a better option would be a solid insert or HPA red puck.

I purchased an OEM Golf R/S3 intercooler and installed at my local VW performance shop for 300 bucks, couldn't beat that so I decided to do that before the charge and discharge pipes on my 1.8 tsi. Charge/discharge pipes will be next and then I am going with the JB1 piggyback and CTS Turbo catted downpipe with stock cat-back, after that until my warranty runs out. Then Ill probably lower the car on some coilers and then wait for warranty to go out and go stage 2 with upgraded mounts.

    Stage 2 calls for exhaust 3 inch maf and inner cooler at minimum. First mods you should be doing is Swiss cheese your airbox then exhaust inner cooler grab a Audi 3 inch maf housing at scrap yard then tune. Also will need a 007 diverter cause the old one isn’t gonna be holding 20+ psi for long without ripping.

      I was thinking this guy must have the best mk5 I've ever seen. Went Unitronic Stage 1+. Didnt take long before things started failing. GFB DV+ was a must, stock diverter tore within a week. R8 coilpacks and stage colder plugs. Wheel hop was terrible, so motor mounts and dogbone insert. Why he would waste so much $ on an intake when you can do an airbox mod for free. Carbon clean is must do depending on mileage. Downpipe and stage 2 will show how weak the rear main seal is. Most def need to upgrade rear main. Straight to Stage 2 will have you scrambling to fix things or a broke down car. Stage 2 with DSG, and a DSG tune should be considered to reset shift points for S drive. Otherwise misfire and fouling plugs, so DSG manual shifts it is. Coilovers when the suspension goes. Otherwise really quick car

    But they say that if you do stage one and then stage 2 your limiter will be totally off. With just stage two it will limit your top speed a bit.

    I like the cold air intake buuuut its not for every car. My buddy has a 2011 crown vic and cold air intake does more bad than good. Same with my 05 forester xt, for some reason I get a maf code thrown when I put an air intake in. Something to do with the way the air flow is being sucked in

    If you have a TDI, an intake upgrade won't do you anywhere near the amount of good that tuning and exhaust will do.
    Usually the stock intake is enough through stage 2.

    I'm guessing the fluid dynamics of the charge pipe has to do with creating a vortex going from large to small and then large again. Just guessing.

    All I've done so far to my GTI is a resonator delete, changed the front badge, plasti dipped my emblems, and some stickers. I want to get some H&R Sport Springs, Unitronic Intake, and some VMR's (not sure which ones yet). Hopefully next month I can have all of this :) Update: I got my H&R Super Sport Springs :D

      I got a 2017 Jetta s 1.4 what mods have you done to your car so far? Or did you say you were waiting for your warranty to end to do them?? I’m waiting a while to save up and also not waste my warranty as I just bought the car less than a year ago, idk exactly what their policy is but I’ll find out once I decide to get started with mods. Lol, was thinking about getting an intake first then a downpipe, stage 2 tune after that, then the awe track exhaust. Wanna get knew wheels and maybe lower it just a little bit and that’s about it. I’m not SUPER knowledgeable about cares but I am very interested and want to do somethings with my car soon.

    i am testing something on my a6 2.7t engine. it works best with the stock airbox sealed, k&n panel air filter, and the stock restrictive intake ribbed hose replaced with a straight flowing plastic or aluminum one. what im trying to figure out, is what works best for this engine. a 3 inch diameter pipe or a 4 inch. the 3 inch diameter pipe is a LITTLE bit smaller than the intake box hole and the t pipe hole, so i think what happens is, the air comes in through the airbox, the 3 inch diameter pipe is a little bit smaller than the stock ribbed 3.5 inch pipe, so it pressurizes the air a little bit more, and that results in more air for the engine and it has a BIT more power, not much but just an extra kick at places i have noticed.
    with the 4 inch diameter im running right now and testing, it seems as though it lets more air in but it doesn't seem like it's getting pressurized as much to get that LITTLE bit of extra "punch". the car is fast either way, but I think the 3 inch diameter pipe because the air is going from a little bigger diameter, to .5 inches smaller, then back to bigger is pressurizing the air to make it go into the y pipe to feed the turbos more. I have to keep on testing, but the 3 inch diameter pipe may actually work better than the 4 inch diameter pipe believe it or not! you would think the 4 inch diameter pipe would work the best, but it seems like it's the same and sometimes a little less of an "vroom" when i launch and stuff. I'll let you guys know :)

    2/20/18 today my car was tune by NPR cost me $662.99 dollar stage 1+ before car has 170 hp now has 235 hp tomorrow I will pick up my car from NPR I can't wait, the next step is build me a exhaust system then remove the cat, then front inter cooler blow off valve, manual boost valve end k04 turbo take back to NPR for tuning so I think that will increase up to 290 hp end because my car is automatic I will stop there,
