    I installed a tune on my 2007 5.7L Toyota engine at 281,000 miles, it runs smoother, makes more HP & TQ and the transmission shifts more precisely without hunting for gears. This was my first experience with tuning a computerized vehicle, and IMHO it was money well spent.

    My father-in-law shared a funny story where a few years ago he had a newly qualified mechanic working on his car which has a carby. He asked the mechanic to increase the idle speed... and the mechanic shrugged as he does not know how to do this. I guess he is trained on all the modern engines but not on the fundamental designs of a classic engine.

    These videos always make the back in the day cars seem simple and cheap to operate. Back then ( say around late 60's) you tuned up your car every year, new spark plugs and new points. About $29 dollars which today is $240.00. Oil changes were every 3 months or 3000 miles and you would also get a lube job on your shocks, another $130 in today's dollars. Tires lasted about 20,000 miles at best. This was before radials were invented so another $100 for four or $825 in today dollars. Gas always seemed cheap, say 50 cents a gallon but that is over $4 today.

    II have been a fan of Scotty for a long while. Very helpful information. I especially enjoy the added graphics in the windows to accent Scotty's commentary. Which is why I was surprised when he said the ignition of the fuel/air mixture causes an explosion. I'm sure he knows that explosions in the combustion chamber causes knocking and can wreck engines. The ignition of the mixture properly burns it and causes a rapid increase in pressure and temperature which pushes the piston away from the head. I wish to reiterate how much I enjoy Scotty's videos. Thanks

    • @briantaylor9701
      @briantaylor9701 3 года назад

      It sounds like you just described an explosion, lol. Explosion in the combustion chamber, during the combustion stroke, is the goal. Bad fuel, with not enough octane rating, exploding while a valve is still open (not during the recognized combustion stroke) causes the engine knock that will ruin the motor if the driver doesn't fix the problem causing it. Often, but not always, shelling out the extra ten to twenty cents per gallon for 89 or 91 octane gas instead of the cheapest, 87 octane fuel, solves the problem.

    From what I read, Bendix developed the first electronic FI system, Electrojector. It was installed on a few Chrysler cars, and in the end most had the FI removed and converted back to carbs. Only one car survives with the system intact, and it belongs to one of Jay Leno's mechanics.
    Bendix sold the designs and rights for the Electrojector to Bosch, who developed it into the D-Jetronic system used in the late 60's and early 70's. Both systems time the injectors with a 2nd set of points in the distributor.

    It helps a lot if you have experience of tuning old carburettors by ear and feel and tuning ignition with lamp so when you first time open the files downloaded from your later model car you already know what you are doing, and also wideband o2 meter helps you to get even better results and you don’t have to trust your old ear&feel method anymore 😃

    Have Hptuners, very powerful software, as a novice tuner, made incredible performance gains aswell fuel economy. Been working on a single tune for over a year, small instruments and adjustments learning what works. It's pretty well dialed in now. However to anyone looking to self tune, as Scotty said too much of a good thing or not enough of another can damage your engine and create huge problems.

      Normaly, manual is the way to go. But if you are looking at a new GT, the Auto is amazing. I have had no issues and it is a dream to drive. The various modes are great. Normal mode shifts like butter and Sport plus is a monster. Drag Mode is a rocket. Snow/Wet even works like a champ to keep between the lines on a slick day. Yeah yeah sticks are for real men, blah blah. Driving in traffic sucks and missing a shift in a race sucks worse. Auto fixes all that and still is a blast, paddles or not.

    Car dealers are getting pretty wise to modified software in late model cars. When you bring your car to the dealer, the first thing the dealer checks is your car's computer programming. If it's not the factory software, your warranty may be null and void.
