    I spent an hour trying to figure out how to set up my dial indicator and I’m so glad I came across this video to double check myself- turns out I had my indicator set up to read a high pinion gear-when I was actually working on a low pinion gear:..
    Thanks so much for posting this!

    Great video. Thank you. It is so nice to finally see some very high quality videos that are easy to understand from several aspects.
    I have always been super intimidated but working on ring and pinion set ups but I have 3 to do this summer so this has been extremely helpful.
    Thanks again for high quality presentation.

    Sir, thank you very much for making this video, I don't understand how it only has 115 likes, seems like gearheads are not keen to express gratitude for being taught how to do stuff. I am about to start my first re-gear on a Dana 30/35 and your videos have been instrumental in making me buy the tools and summon the courage to do it. I can't thank you enough. If you ever come down to Costa Rica you have dinner and beers on me!

    Thankful to have come across this video. I purchased a dial indicator to use when regearing my Landcruiser difffs but had only an idea of how to use it but couldnt really figure out how to adjust it to get it set up properly. And then I didnt realize the difference between the high pinion and low pinion. Your video has helped tremendously!

    You have some of the best diff videos. One question, when setting backlash, when do I know to add to the right side or take away from the left side, or vice versa?

    • @TheBFHGarage
      @TheBFHGarage  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the kind words. When establishing backlash, when you add shims to the left side it will tighten it up. When you take away shims (swap side to side), it opens up the backlash.

  • @aggieclimber
    @aggieclimber 2 года назад

    Absolutely a fantastic video. I appreciate your style of information dissemination. Very little fluff but you don't gloss over important parts. Quick question, another one of your videos where you are rebuilding a Dana 30. You seem to indicate there is a certain tolerance of backlash that is allowed before running a pattern with the yellow paint. Did I understand that correctly? If so? What is the backlash tolerance? Thanks in advance.
    Chad

    • @TheBFHGarage
      @TheBFHGarage  2 года назад

      Correct. If setting aftermarket gears go with the manufacturers spec tolerances. Usually 5-10 thou.

    • @aggieclimber
      @aggieclimber 2 года назад

      @@TheBFHGarage thanks again for all the information. When you say stay on the looser side, do you mean try to have greater backlash within the specified tolerances?

    Ive gone through your videos i feel like you see most comments from videos even older. This one's a little older but it discussing tools for setup i was wondering what your thoughts are on case spreaders.
    Ill be regearing a jk 44 and an old ford hp44 and im just curious if ill need one. I dont believe ive seen you use one. Is it something axle specific or maybe just something depending on the specific regear.

    • @TheBFHGarage
      @TheBFHGarage  7 месяцев назад +1

      I have a case spreader but never use it. I did an experiment with a buddy of mine to see the difference between using one and not. I'll make a video about it eventually. Bottom line, I don't use one and would only consider it in the toughest of circumstances. Getting the carrier/locker started and working it in from there seems to be the quickest and easiest solution for me.

    I have a question for my rv trailer, i changed my bearings, races, drums, so everything is new. I took a dial indicator meeter for the first time to look the play I have. Tell me if the way I did it is ok. Well the meter was magnet to my frame and the pin of the gauge was right on the top side of my drum, right to the edge of the drum, at 10'' to 12'' circle. I push my drum side to side and I got 0.002 and sometime 0.003. I know I'm in the range that it suppose to be but I want to make sure I put the dial indicator the right way. An other question tell me if I'm right, let say I have 0.002 or 0.003 from the 12'' drum do you thing if we were able to measure the play right between the bearing we could find around 0.001? And let say if I was gona be able to put the dial meter right againt the metal wheel or the tire we could expect to have like 0.005 or maybee a little bit more cause the wheel is bigger size than the drum and the bearing itself ? I'm trying to make myself a template or kind of a model for next services, if this is right the way I did it, I will keep in mind 0.002 to 0.003 from the drum is a good play for bearings, so not to loose or not too tight. I really like your channel very informative and you explain very well. Thanks.

      I don't think there is a need to do that on a trailer axle unless your trying to diagnose a problem.

    I am always disappointed when I see tools demonstrated with no reference to their cost. Can you trust a cheap in/lb torque wrench or dial gauge from ebay

    • @TheBFHGarage
      @TheBFHGarage  Год назад

      That's because costs change quickly over time. If this video was 10 years old, cost would be irrelevant. Yes, eBay, Amazon, or any bike shop would have an in/lbs torque wrench
