- Dark Souls the Board Game is finally here, but is it any good? Resident tabletop enthusiast Johnny died several times in order to find out, so really the least you could do is watch his review.

I enjoyed this, especially the man in the burgundy jumper, who had the best arms and hands.
are u the man in the burgundy jumper?
jomega gaming yes he says joe in the video
Joe Ewens I was thinkimg the same excact thing...
I've seen better hands and arms, 6/10.
What?! How dare you! I will now have to fight you, but I am unwilling to use my beautiful hands and arms to fight because they are too precious, so I will lose.
How you end the game must also be quite a tough choice. You either have to set fire to the game or turn off all the lights and have to play it again in complete darkness.
I'll add the ''turn off al the lights'' thing in my next playthrough. Thanks
@@Nyyob do that, but light a single candle. After every level, add another candle (or stronger candle). After the last session, light a bonfire.
I was expecting the packaging to be a mimic
Angus Cage yeah that would have been great, or if it was included as an enemy
Hiraeth Mimics will come in one of the expansions ;)
Maybe that's what it meant by you died when you open it up
Yeah……that why I threw a fire bomb at it before opening……didn't went well
trew a bomb IN it before OPENING it .. yeah right ... because of magic ?
even in the boardgame, theres still a whole lot of rolling.
im sad bed of chaos isnt in the game id love my miniature to be knocked of the board
You mean through the board
The question is whether they'd implement the exploit where you can throw two firebombs from right in front of it to cheese the boss and be done in under 15 seconds.
Just put a cat/dog/agitated lizard on the table and you will get the same effect.
Justavian WHY DO I NOT KNOW THIS
Dark Souls the board game:
The unfinished Izalith expansion
Runs at a whopping 1,000,000,000,000,000 FPS
Oscar of Astora thanks for the estus man, much appreciated.
Oscar of Astora You mean somewhere between 24-70fps averageing about 30fps but maxing at around 225fps depending on your setup
Where did you get those numbers from?
Nicholas Menzel I googled the fps of the human eye. Don't use them in your thesis but they don't seem to far off what I read in biology
Oscar of Astora The frame rate of the universe is 1.855x10^43. That's how many Planck Times (the smallest unit of time possible) is in one second.
ill buy Anor Londo for $500
That makes me think of how a dark souls designed Monopoly would look like....
+ It's L
I'd buy that.
DO NOT PASS THE BONFIRE, DO NOT COLLECT 200 SOULS GO RIGHT TO GREYRATS CELL!
we can build it. we have the technology
You mean the Undead Asylum?
"It runs very smoothly" - Unlike OG Dark Souls on release ;-;
You should see Demon's Souls then, Hope you like awful framerate!
Lewis White, or OG Dark Souls Blighttown on, well, forever
FittedDexter I tell you I had NO framerate problems at all with Demon Souls on PS3.Blighttown, however, killed me with it's constant lag :/
Demon's Souls had notable frame rate issues, particularly in the Valley of Defilement and the later parts of Boletaria when more than 4 enemies were on screen at once.(the on PS3 bit doesn't matter as there are no other options) Though Demon's Souls still had better frame rate and was cleaner and tighter than Dark Souls 1(I assume because DS1 was built as a multi-platform title) DS1 had a much more interesting artistic world that distracted you from the graphical shortcomings though.
Hahahaha you made me laugh.
Is poise working as intended in the board game?
Old Hero Miyazaki wasn't involved, so yeah.
Alyssa What do you mean Miyazaki wasn't involved? He was only heavily involved in the one game that has poise and Bloodborne where hit stun is almost non-existent.
I wonder if it's possible to gear up as havel mage
hahahahahaha
Matthew Coyle I was just kidding...
Lol this guy needs 3 summons to make it through the game. What a casual.
**git gud casul**
It not causal, it's CASUL
i'd like to see a speedrun of this game
Someone tell Lobos Jr.
A Subjective Perspective I want to see a blindfold run
I hope they make a video game based off this
Well buddy ol' pal i got diddly darn good news for you!

Actually, it is.
Only problem is that you mostly have to play locally.
only bad thing: you need social interaction.
Yeah, infinite fps, no lag or overheating, no minimum pc requirements. Pretty great, and allows for free custom skin packs!
Bet the first time I play this I'll get invaded by someone with Ringed Knight Paired Greatswords.
Oh no not the paired greatswords
Did anyone else hear the "you died sound" in their head when he opened the box?
Yea
I need a Dumbshits guide to Dark Souls the Board Game
Think Dark Souls: The Board Game is easy? Nope. It's as hard as Havel. *HAVEL!!* And the guides are too long and srs. So this is: *THE DUMBSHIT'S GUIDE TO:* Dark Souls the Board Game.
We're gonna have to wait another 5 years for that
But is it 60fps?
Well the eye can only see at a cinematic 24 FPS so that's probably what this game runs at.
Time to download more RAM for my eye then.
You need to see an optician if you see in frames.
Jay D we all see in frames, and less than 30 fps, even. that's why high framerate feels more realistic to watch.
It's official... The world has gone stupid. Where is my noose?
I'm shocked the designers did such a good job to translate the experience from the games into a board game. Stunning.
I really like the repeating move set of the bosses. That's a really smart move.
Very nice review also!
yup when firesage demon keep spamming that fire explosion when i cant get behind his ass. ye thats smart move
the boss only should have his signature move in the deck a certain amount of times, there should be a break in his attacks, unless you are alluding to the video game... that just means your actions have him stuck in that loop, don't do that.
There is a "On Fire" mechanic that adds cards to the boss deck once they hit a certain life total, so there are even different 'Phases' to the bosses as well.
We even used the "card" mechanic in a boss fight in D&D (our DM made the boss to fit that mechanic well), and it worked out SERIOUSLY good with the D&D mechanics.
Nice, I DM for a D&D game, definitely gonna have to look into this as a possibility. Seems to fit best for something like a golem or elemental, something that is aggro, but not too 'smart' so it doesn't change up it's tactics much.
**buys 10 boxes and creates dark souls mmo**
Now we just need someone to recreate this for tabletop simulator on steam.
now you can scream:"you died" at your friend's face
*Insert poise joke here*
A Single Cheeto Puff ugh
A Single Cheeto Puff you died (get it? :v)
Dark souls 2 armour.
Giant dad: *gets hit by Havel's tooth*
Giant dad doesn't budge
Giant dad: WELL, WHAT IS IT
There is an additional mechanic that adds cards to the boss deck once they hit a certain life total, so there are even different 'Phases' to the bosses as well.
you should definitely paint up those figures johnny!
I'm about a third of the way through painting my first Warhammer army and I have to say it's crossed my mind. I'm not sure I'd get much further than painting them one colour and drybrushing them, though...
Eurogamer ooh! what army you got?
Three colours and a wash is enough for decent "tabletop quality" feel most of the time :)
But regarding the models, how bad is the moldlines/flash? It's hard to tell in the videos I've seen but there seems to be some that will need cleaning, which annoys me immensely due to them being pre-assembled...
+Alex Rowley skaven pestilens

No invasion mechanic, No poise, No lag-stabs, No Patches, No White Half Dragon Tail, No mimic, No try jumping, No Solaire, No "Chest", No mimic 0/10 does not capture the true souls game
Gideon Baranda to be fair ds3 doesnt have poise either ;)
soliare is in the game just not the core game he was a stretch goal
there is an invasion mecanic , mimics, solaire, chests and hell barrels too but at first only for kickstarter backers.... i regret that i havent heard earlier of this
Gideon Baranda I dunno if invasions would work too well
"Man shot to death after breaking into board game player's home and attempting to place a red miniature on the board"
Cheesio "...victim claims to have banished invader, according to police."
First video of yours I've ever seen, what a great explanation. It's long enough to give the detailed information players will want, but concise enough never to bog us down.
Keep it up, subscribed!
Hey Johnny, can you please make a video on how to find board game friends?
TheColorUrple Or just friends would do, cheers
step one : do you have friends ? well fuck... :)
Go to the local store where you buy your games from and ask if they have a games night.
Does it come with friends to play it with?
Hmm..... Are friends required
@@crashlavabeast little late for this but no. you can play it solo
@@manueldossantos8904 dude I posted that 2 years ago

@@manueldossantos8904 sure I guess?
More please. Maybe some let's plays would be awesome. I'd love to watch the video team attempt board games
I'd love to see more board game vids, especially a video of all 4 of y'all playing that copy of Mysterium you've got behind you. That would be super duper fun to watch!
Could you guys have more board game reviews? As more of a board gamer now I appreciate the treating the review and would like to see more. Even a late to the party BG edition would be fun.
I don't know if you follow Shut Up and Sit Down on youtube or anything, but they're a board games channel. I'm not really a board gamer, but I enjoy the stuff Matt Lees and Quins do on Cool Ghosts, so I assume SUaSD is good too
Just want to second Shut Up and Sit Down, it is absolutely brilliant.
Do- do you have eyebrows tattooed on your collarbones? I can only assume your nipples are the eyes and your belly button is the mouth? 😲
i dont even really care about board games but this channel is brilliant. your presentation is superfluous and you add in elements of humour in the right places and right doses :D subbed for you, not even the concept of the channel xD
I'm glad you gave this a good review after Kickstarting and waiting patiently for my delivery and, after seeing the great taste in board games behind you I have full faith. Thanks Johnny! Give us more board game reviews!
Fabulous review Johnny. Brought here from your recent playthrough with Aoife and I know of several gamers who will enjoy this.
I'd love a let's play video of you guys going through the game!
if only I have money and friend...
cypherusuh Sadness ahead *collapse gesture*
cypherusuh I've got 4 versions of Axis and Allies, Elder Signs, Arkham Asylum and about 20yrs of dust. friends and strangers alike usually say No Thanks once they hear 2hr avg game time. I blame Millennials, Facebook and Social Network junkies all in hurry to go nowhere 8hr candy crushing zombies
I believe it's actually playable 1 player, I know the creators where working on that at some point
Fantastic overview! I was on the fence about this and you helped me make up my mind.
Excellent video and loved your delivery as well. I'd be very happy to see more reviews! (Now the waiting game for my copy to arrive...)
I want to buy enough expansion of this game to make a big looping short cut back to the bonfire.
Me: ok family, let's play Dark souls the BoardGame.
My father: are you sure it is for the whole family?
My grandmother: YES INDEED...
It is called "Lothric"
Nice touch putting Slave Knight Gael's theme in the background, that track is awesome!
Great video and review Johhny. Im a huge board game fan and I think its great that Eurogamer are also doing board game videos. Keep up the good work!
I feel like finesing your opponents position is to replicate one of the most important parts of the Souls series that while rarely spoken is subconsciously known, the positioning of enemies and your character based on your build. More than stamina management or even shielding and blocking positioning means the most, by pushing in the video game just enough to gall your enemies into range while exposed would be hard to replicate in a board game so this player influencing of the enemies in the board game is the closest we can get.
Except in Dark Souls 2. Outspacing is mostly unreliable as the game will you fuck up with its broken hitboxes, clunky movement and weird enemy combos.
Gotta play the correlating boss themes for the bosses while you play this too! For ambiance, of course.
Scrub That's an incredible idea, I thank you for that because I will be doing exactly that
Ricoratso knowingly taking advice from a scrub, one must now question your judgement
Great review, mr! I'd like to see more of these. Great format and delivery.
Thank you!
One of the best video reviews I have seen in a long time. And defiantly the best Dark Souls review. A good, all round, pros and cons about the game that leaves us with a good overall idea of how the game plays. Then a personal judgement. So enjoyable, I watched it twice
Johnny, should I play Dark Souls: The Movie: The Game: The Board Game: The Movie: The Board Game: The Board Game? Or should I make a sweet Dark Souls tabletop D&D-type game using the statues?
Oh wait, it actually kinda looks like that a little already.
It's a pure dungeon crawl with no narrative structure, but that doesn't mean you cannot add your own role-playing component.
Its Cherry So it's really a Diablo board game! noooooooo, need lore to runs as deep as the abyss and Patches because Patches
yous should do more board game reviews on eurogamer
This was a great review, the way Johnny comes across, the layout of the review. Loved it. Would definitely watch more of it, great work. :)
Great video, definitely down to see more!
Looks great but geez is it really $120?
For some reason plastic miniatures are more valuable (by weight) than gold. It's the Warhammer effect.
Honestly for 120$ u would expect the plastic to be ATLEAST hand painted in some superb black red colors rigth?
Tommy Faust I'm not a massive board game fan but £90/$120 does seem somewhat standard for a game of this type. Also, I think it's the heavy duty printed components that are a large part of the cost. In this case they were all done in Germany so are of a higher quality than might be expected had they been done in China or the like, but that obviously has a cost implication. Also the fact that the thing weighs in at 3.5kg means that transport costs are going to make up a larger percentage of RRP than might be expected. The actual cost of injection molding some PVC figures is probably one if the smaller portions of the overall costs.
This is exactly what I'd expect it to cost. High quality minis, cards and card punchouts, not to mention the work that's gone in to the rules and balance. These types of games are worth the cash
The minis were cast in China, as were the cards. The character boards and cards were cut in either Indiana or Germany, depending on where the game's destination was.
if it doesnt have the pinwheel, then I dont want it
But pinwheel is one of the easiest bosses in dark souls 1... at least in my opinion
Alright guys, we got pinwheel, we're going to breeze this guy, he takes about ten seconds in the real game. Finally some breathing room. *Gets slaughtered instantly*

Absolutely great video! Good introduction to the game before getting a hands on experience. Enjoyed the structure of your video a lot so keep it up. Would love to see some future video's of some expansions if you got your hands on any of them or perhaps will in the future. I've backed the vanilla game along with the Sif expansion + extra forest tiles. So would love to see your approach and analysis as the game keeps developing, perhaps more expansions will be added we never know... Keep up the work!!
Loved this dude, please do more. Maybe more little snippets of gameplay next time?
Jaipur, Pandemic Legacy, Netrunner, Mysterium, Rebellion, Isle of Skye, Beats of Balance; Johnny you have a superb taste in games.
Loved the video, would definitely like to see more in the future. Though if you could include an item of fruit for scale that would help hugely.
Any particular piece of fruit? Just the one piece or fruit, or perhaps... a... pair?
Yes. A pair of fruits. For reference. Very sensible.
I just wanted to say, this little exchange is delightful. Also it's a lovely video Johnny, hope to see more.
So THAT´S why SU&SD uses a pair! Couldn't figure out what a pair had to do with anything. Now I know! :)

I just really wish i could buy the miniatures separately.
Me and my best friend are going in 50/50 on this bad boy and I'm seriously super stoked, I really liked your clear and concise review, hope to see more content like this in the future. Maybe if you think it's a good idea do a little 2 part series with a couple encounters played out start to finish and a mini boss and a zone boss fight video. I would totally watch you guys play it!
Having just rediscovered and rewatched this fantastic episode I would love to see the Eurogamer team play more board game adaptations of video games (at least to begin with), for example the Fallout board game or the Doom board game :D
I'm American. Can you please define "faff"?
A faff is best defined as ineffectual activity - so in this instance it was a fair bit of work for something that seems otherwise uncomplicated.
Underrated comment
So how camera work in this?
Worse than Devil May Cry 2
Excellent video, brilliantly presented. More of these please, Eurogamer!
Johnny! Good to see you (was a big fan during your GS days).
I expected Ornstein to be taller
Why does the press get this before the backers who paid for it's production?
because marketing
Great review! Subbed and hoping for more board game reviews!
I am so happy this video randomly popped up on my feeds!!! I didn't even know it was out yet!
But where does it fit in the timeline and how much deep lore secrets can you find out?
kevkev 2401 Time to call Vaati.
Hikari ও@ Good call, he shouls have our answers ready after aprox 5 months of digging and waiting for him to upload.
Anyone else considering using the models for 40k?
blindoutlaw, that would be heresy.
Great vid, glad to see more board game reviews
GREAT review!! Love the format!
Is it weird if I haven't played Dark Souls and want this?
For the next recipe why not make an estus drink?
Add a lot of booze because you might get so drunk you'll think it works
It would be hilarious if estus flasks were just incredibly alcoholic.
I guess you can just buy lighter fluid because estus is literally drinkable fire.
I'm so excited for this to arrive in the mail! I'm so glad people are liking it and hopefully they make tons of expansions with more bosses, like Slave Knight Gael. Great choice for background music btw!
Great review... I played the game for the first time last night. I picked up the game pretty quick and felt the same as you. The 90 to 120 min time was well under. We played our first campaign over 5 hours! My group love coop board games and I would like to see more reviews from you.
Did I hear Quinn's? And Matt Lee?
good catch! I think anytime you play a game with those guys, you should probably put an enjoyment bias disclaimer up front. I imagine they make anything fun!
+TC Petty III Not them I'm afraid! Different friends.
5:27 i could have sworn this is Quinns
Haha - Was thinking the same thing :D
No solaire, no purchase.
Nice! Just bought it, and you alleviated any hint of buyers remorse. You covered a lot of my questions in an effective manner. Looking forward to playing and more of your reviews.
cant wait to watch more of your videos. very well made
Do you get £200 for passing go?
That`s a good thing though, I would have thought.
I find it weird how there's nothing from dark souls 2
Alejandro Sanchez LOL I noticed that too.
Alejandro Sanchez
I was quite pissed about how this game has the cover of DS3, and only 1 boss and 2 mini-bosses of DS3 and everything else is from DS1, and nothing from DS2. Quite disappointing.
It has one of the best DS3 bossfights in.
Disappointing? Pretty fitting word for Dark Souls 2
Dark Souls 2 is like Gears of War Judgment is to the Gears franchise.
I enjoyed this video. I hope Eurogamer does more board game reviews.
Great video guys. It's good to see a company tackle things around video games, and not just games themselves.
"without being unfair"
Doesn't sound like Dark Souls...
You're thinking of dark souls 2
but does the board game have poise?
cory myers the real question is, can you become The Legend, Father of Giants?
thebalisa THE DRINKER OF DEW
I made custom difficulty for this game (which is very un-Dark Soul) to make playing the game with friends and family more bearable:
1. Easy mode: double the number of souls obtained. Activation is alternated by model and model, so one enemy model activates and then a player activates.
2. Normal mode: standard rule
3. Hard mode: lost health is not healed after clearing a tile
I really like the mechanic where you chose where the enemy moves, it's like using the many intentional pathing exploits found in the souls games.
Dark souls board game for hardcore fans or people that can't afford a computer or console
The board game actually costs more than a PS3 + Dark Souls
bulbadude how much?
The board game is $135 on Amazon.
A used PS3 can be found easily under $100.
Kim Jong Skill pfff ps3 for 100 dollars?
If I ever saw a price that low Id actually buy a next gen console.
I doubt that you can buy it from a second hand seller.Or either they give their accounts aswell.
Plus you still have to pay for online.
Chroma. I know old comment but on the ps3 you don't have to pay for online.
Who else is American?
I was really curious how they did this. This was incredibly informative, thanks!
I really enjoyed this video, i would like to see more videos like this one in the future.
Me ( an American ) : 3kg? that's doesn't sound so heav... 7 POUNDS!!!!!!
America approved for translating to idiotic pounds XD
Sorry for giving you that moronic system of measurement in the first place!
yay! you actually know the facts. this makes me happy :P as an american i detest those who try and shame us for using a system they invented.
Jesse Stern Metric system was invented by Math Scrubs trying to make an easy mode for measurements. The English Standard system is for the real players. Git Gud Europe!
You mean freedom units?
Raven Pope funny enough pounds aren't even from 'murica
The boss mechanics seem really cool and they mimic perfectly how the boss fights in the souls games go specially against melee bosses you die one to three times until you figure out his attack patterns and it's pretty much the same from that point on excluding easy or hard bosses with rng moves
I wish my friends were into board games and tabletop gaming, because I'd really like to play this
I'm sorry, I have to say it. If you're farming souls in Dark Souls, that's indicative that you're doing something wrong.
Matt or maybe you wanna level up cuz u already are lvl 150 or want to buy all weapons and boss armors, dunno
So when you have 38 strength but need 40 for the boss weapon you just got, you wait until you level up naturally? You never feel it would be easier to just spent 5 minuets farming, then use the weapon you want to use?
Or when you want to get into the SL120 PvP sweetspot, you just play through half the game waiting for it to happen by itself?
Or when you need souls to buy titanite chunks to upgrade your latest weapon to +10, you don't speed that up?
Get the fuck out of here with your "real fans don't grind" bullshit.
Matt well I end up farming souls but that's usually only to get to the correct pvp level
Consumable souls bridge the gap for when you need a quick level up or two to use a weapon or piece of armor. Farming beyond that is intentionally setting out to break the balance of the game (which was acknowledged when DS2 stopped enemies from respawning after 7 kills)
Matt so using what the game gives you to your advantage is breaking the balance of the game? I remember my first time playing pvp for real, going to the forest with Alva and stuff, and I felt very frustrated to be invaded by people with way better gear and equipment. If I wanted to have a chance, I had to farm. And by farming I eventually upgraded the Claymore to +15 and my armor and finally started to do better. So farming is crucial in some situations and it can't be breaking the game balance, because most people only farm to upgrade gear or get to SL120 to do pvp.
I get your point tho that if you just go for PVE then yeah farming isn't needed.
"Farming souls is as important in dark souls the boardgame as it is in Dark souls"
People who grind for souls in a Dark Souls game don't know how to play a dark souls game.
Audiodump Yeah, it's not necessary, but would certainly make things easier. I don't do it since I feel like I'm cheating.
dark souls are my favorite games of all time and i have played through each of them many times. guess what, i know what i am doing and i grind for souls. every time i play it. people who don't farm for souls do not know how to play a souls game. like you didnt fucking farm when you started playing. get the fuck out of here. even if you are good at the game now, you were not good at the start and i guarantee you are forgetting when you sucked at the game .
Kyle Peacock Yeah, I kind of farmed at first unintentionally since I would die and had to go through everything again carefully.
But yeah, I know how these games work and I know grinding isn't needed.
If you got mad because some of us don't do it, ok, it's your own ego being hurt.
Also, people say it's very "trial and error" and, therefore, "difficult", but if you're careful and pay attention to your surroundings, it's not as bad as people make it out to be.
Grinding is necessary if you wanna use a weapon with higher stat requirements as soon as possible.
Audiodump People that don't grind for souls don't know how to play a souls game.
Thanks for the fine description and review of the game, much appreciated! Great video.
Would definitely like to see more of this.
