  • Always Board Never Boring like Dark Souls The Board Game way more than he really expected to, so obviously he wanted some expansions. In this video, we take a look at the characters expansion which adds six new heroes to the game (for a total of 10) as well as 10 iconic armour sets.
Apologies if the text on some of the cards in the video isn't very clear - these cards are small and the size of some of the text is bordering on the absurd. Hopefully it won't ruin your enjoyment of the video.

This and dark root spiced up the game so much.

New characters are always good. I will definitely get Explorers next to flesh out all the core game stuff. After that, I'm a bit torn between something like the invaders or another area pack. I guess I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

To be fair, the game doesn't seem to have gone down particularly well with a lot of people. There are complaints of it taking too long and being too much of a grind, but I absolutely love it.

I absolutely love this game. I´m currently collecting every expansion possible and playing them with my friends because it is just that fun and challenging! We do use like 2 house rules but otherwise the game works extremely well by it´s self.

Lots of people recommend Darkroot. It looks fun but as I’ve only played DS3 it’s a shame they don’t have something similar for an area I am more familiar with. It will definitely be Explorers next for me then probably phantoms depending on how I feel about needing more enemies by that point.

I did try the double souls half spark things, just out of interest really, and I felt it really harmed the natural progression of the game so I only ever used it that once. I'm okay with sinking into a long game that takes hours to work through, though. If I'm having fun I don't feel the need to rush anything.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring so you referred the official rule ?

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  2 года назад +1

The double souls half sparks suggestion came about once the game was in the wild and has sort of been adopted as an official variant by Steamforged Games, as far as I can tell. It's one of the only variations from the printed rules that I've tried. The only thing I have done occasionally is draw a few items at the very start of the game, the reason being, I sometimes feel the first few "level ups" are a bit aimless. If there are some items already revealed it gives me something to work towards at the very start of the game.

Fully agree with the awesomeness of the game:) I actually went All in and going through it slowly. Also no houserules at least for now. At the moment trying my luck with warrior and cleric (from this box) vs. Vordt. Great video as always!

Thanks for watching. Happy to hear from other people who are enjoying it because you tend to mainly hear people saying they don't have fun with it. As a fan of DS3 I would like Vordt, but I think there are other things I want to add to the game first before loading up on more boss fights.

Generally, I don't use card sleeves at all. Only in rare cases for vintage games I want to preserve like my original copy of HeroQuest (which uses Yucatan 54x80mm sleeves from Sleeve Kings, which aren't compatible with Hasbro's new edition of HeroQuest). I won't be sleeving Dark Souls.

I was interested in this game, as it seemed to have a lot of things that I like, but the reviews and comments that I saw put me off (maybe unfairly, I don't know). They all seemed to say it was long, difficult, boring, repetitive and very grindy. A lot of time spent going through the same thing all the time for a small reward that wasn't even that good. So in the end I didn't go for it, but I've always wondered if it might be better than I thought. It would be interesting to see something from you on the core game, with your overall thoughts, as you seem to like it quite a bit.

@@phildevey6302The game is better then you think. It is still not everyone’s cup of tee, but the game got a bad rap because of the terrible kickstarted rollout. People who went all in were missing essential expansions for years.
This really gave the game a bad reputation that has stuck ever since.

I got their tabletop RPG Dark Souls book somewhat recently, and good god what an underwhelming and messy book that is.

I've never tried any of Steamforged's RPG stuff. They seem to be doing quite a bit of it at the moment, so it's a shame to hear their Dark Souls one is a bit of a mess. I feel like it must be quite a hard IP to make a decent RPG out of.

  • @Mrfinch9999

I really hate the direction they took the game with v2. They could have made v1 so much better with two expansions packs that addressed the repetitive complaints with just more enemies and some more features added to encounters (ex: event cards and possibly objective cards with some rule updates would have done it).
Just make one expansion have event cards and another have objective cards. Presto, everything is then perfect with v1
Could have even made them stand alone still.
SFG failed to understand most of the complaints were because they took to long to release expansions that added the variety the game needed. They assumed that meant encounters needed to be changed when it meant they needed to just add more with the encounters.
Expansions already addressed most of the issues and these last two expansions could have made the game good.
Instead they decided to just make a whole new game and kill the future of the game. New players will get confused by v2 and v1, they will leave before the v2 updates come out. While long term fans will be alienated.

I love version 1. It's one of my top 10 games. I don't think they needed to course correct the way they did.
They seem committed to the new version now though, with three boxes out so far, including Sunless City, which recycles most of the original core enemies. I have Painted World of Ariamis and I like it well enough, but I have just taken a few of the revised rules and ported them into the original core experience. I am happy to leave it at that, I think.

I'm in a bit of a quandary with it. My plan is to paint them up using basecoats and Citadel washes, because I thought I might be able to capture some of that slightly washed out style of the video game art, but now GW have reformulated all of their shades and apparently they don't work quite the same as the older washes that I will be using.
