Dark Souls: The Story of Hidetaka Miyazaki

  • When Hidetaka Miyazaki fired up Ico for the first time, he had no idea how much his life would change. Ten years later, with the success of his own game series, Dark Souls, Hidetaka was made president of From Software - and it was all thanks to a single inspiring gaming experience.
    Hidetaka's story is one of triumph through trial and error. After quitting a job at a prestigious technology company to pursue his dream of becoming a games developer, he had to work hard to find a new place for himself. But a desire to tell a powerful story through video games motivated him to change his entire life.
    His first game, Demon Souls, was an enormous challenge, as the project was believed by his peers to be doomed to failure. Hidetaka had the odds stacked against him - but, if we've learned anything from the Dark Souls games, it's that tough challenges are worth fighting through in return for a more satisfying victory.
    Special thanks to everyone who requested this episode, here's hoping it inspires you to take another crack at whatever personal goal you've been struggling with. We have faith in you!
    Also, apologies for the ad break in the middle of this video, it was done deliberately to punctuate the story. This ended up being a very long video, and while we considered splitting it into two parts, we figured we'd rather do it in one big chunk. As a result, though, we felt like we needed a moment's pause in the middle to help let things sink in, and the perfect way to give it that moment of quiet seemed to be an extra advert. Sorry if it breaks up the flow too much - let us know if it bothered you too much, we're figuring things out at we go, so we're happy to change things up if necessary.
    Let us know what videos you'd like to see in the near future.

      Do you have sources from an interview with him ? I heard both versions of the story and, though the version with books in English is more common it seems less likely to me. Japanese is a difficult language to read since there are so many characters (kanji) to learn that even most adults don't know them all so it wouldn't be surprising that a young Miyazaki would struggle to read books even in his own language, doesn't mean he was particularly dumb. On the other hand, there aren't many books written in English in Japan, so I'm surprised he would have read that many...
      Now, as I said, I don't know for sure, but it would nice if someone could bring a proof either way.

      It's probably true though. It's no secret that Miyazaki loves the esoteric and gives reward to people that comb through every item, no matter how mundane to piece a story together.
      I know you wrote this as a joke, but it is likely the reason soulsborne games are so convoluted, with the lore only being revealed with meticulous cataloguing of 100% runs

Witcher 3 won for a reason, the amount of effort poured by the developers in creating it was insane and if you had previously played Witcher 2, you would know how much of an improvement Witcher 3 was, Bloodborne was amazing but Witcher 3 deserved the award.

      feel like its important to point out, at the start when she mentions him struggling to understand big and complicated words, that isn't true, he was reading western Fantasy stories, which were often in English without having Japanese translated version available, he had to just try and read through them in a language he didn't fully grasp. which gives pretty much the same result, context would end up missing, which is where the lore style of Dark souls now originates from, it's not very specific or coherent, so you have to sort of figure it out on your own, instead of just reading it, you have to interpret the world around you. which I personally don't see why more RPG's didn't think of, it makes sense doesn't it? Experience, and interpret the world around you, instead of just listening or reading, being told what it is. as film critics say. "Show it, Don't tell it!"

    It's always been amazing to me how the Souls games came at just the right time. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls fit in like a missing puzzle piece at a time when it felt like games were just degenerating into interactive movies. There was also a lot of post-modern deconstructions of the value of challenge in video games going on at the time.
    Dark Souls' success showed that people *do* want challenge, they *do* want to earn success. It was also a good case for video games' ability to show fascinating worlds and stories without excessive use of cutscenes and dialogue. People can be captivated without having everything handed to them.

    Dark Souls is an absolute masterclass game. It is pure art and beauty with deep themes of life. There's darkness and despair and there's hope and fighting for our humanity. The central theme of purgatory is what really intrigued me. Those stuck in that world too long became "hollow". Which really relates to our lives on how if we let all that darkness consume us and we get lost in despair, we lose our humanity when we should be fighting for it. I never thought there could be a beautiful message from such a Dark game.

      It's also perfect allegory for videogamers in general. When they give up finishing the game halfway thru the character in the game (and the gamer themselves) lost a purpose and become trapped in the middle of the story and become purposeless hollow. I really want the next Souls series to keep tab on player created characters and which one of them not yet finished the game for a long time and can become special enemy in other people's gameplay as special hollow.

    I am so glad Miyazaki took up Demon's Souls. Personally, it's my favorite of the Souls line up and I feel like it's almost criminally underrated. Sure, could have used some polish here and there, but that lack of polish gives it the charm in the same way the other Souls games have charm.
    I still love the hell out of Maiden Astraea's story too.

    • @redsgrave2003
      @redsgrave2003 6 лет назад +7

      Demon's Souls was like an uncut diamond. Nobody knew what to do with it and it was a bit of a mess but look through it at the right angle and you could see beauty beyond your imagination. Dark Souls, its sequels and Bloodborne was like they cut that diamond brilliantly, and it sparkles all around but every now and then you think about that perfect radiance of Demon's Souls, whether it's the Old Monk, or Latria, or Maiden Astraea, or whatever, there was just a little bit of brilliance that shone through in Demon's Souls that has never quite shone through in any of the other games.

    • @GigawingsVideo
      @GigawingsVideo 6 лет назад +1

      MEGA KURA As a gemstone collector this is the perfect analogy. Yes I can always wear polished Turquoise or quartz ring but rough turquoise or quartz is so charming to look at. Demon's Souls bosses are actually felt like old NES bosses, especially the first Castlevania. They're not visually polished that well but pretty iconic. Even the weird blob, the Tower Knight, or the final boss that actually looks pretty generic.

    How you describe Hidetaka Miyazaki in his working days is eerily similar to myself, what with "taking the path of least resistance". I sleepwalked through my education and am currently quite satisfied with a part-time job at a pet shop. I've been aching for some extra context for the creation of Dark Souls, since I agree with the majority that it is one of the best games ever made. Thank you so much for making this. I'll think very hard about Hidetaka's story going forward in my life.

    "He enjoyed piecing the story together, and he particularly liked the ambiguity that his method of reading created."
    I now have so much more respect for the Souls series method of story-telling. I thought it was an interesting and rewarding method of figuring out the world before, but now that I know it was based on Miyazaki's eagerness to continue reading even if he didn't understand everything, it just makes it all the more beautiful.

    Also worth noting that Demon's Souls was originally supposed to be a remake of King's Field, and thus takes lots of inspiration from it, acting as a sort of new take on the concept. It wasn't all Miyazaki. In addition, Demon's Souls sold a whopping 1.7 million copies, with virtually no marketing to speak of.
