An inspiration to all of us out here who are self-taught and never took a lesson…. Where eventually all your bad habits become your very own personal style!!! PeaceOut Brother !
I've been playing for 40+ years, can replicate Eruption in a bar band and get a ton of applause. Can dive bomb, squeal, tap and entertain all night long, but when I improvise I'm out of ideas fairly quickly. In other words a great imitator, a shit innovator. Hell, I even went to GIT back in the 80's! But then I started watching, Jack Ruch, Corey Congilio and you. And I'm really understanding how important arpeggios and chord tones are over flying through Dorian and Mixolydian runs. Just focusing on those have change my world. I feel like I'm developing a voice, not mature yet, but I'm hearing things in my playing that I've been wanting for 30 years. I need to get down to Nashville to find you guys and watch up close. You're all very inspiring! Oh and I'm from Steeler country. Grew up hating the Browns... then that weekend happened and A.M. become pubic enemy number one down here. That was BS and I'm still pissed at him. I respect the Browns now, because you can't do that to family!
I think your assessment of player ability is spot on. I live in an area with a lot of cool guitar players. They are all really sweet people but are content playing cowboy chords. I’ve been playing for 45 years and have a decent vocabulary. I’m not a great player by any stretch of the imagination just a bit more in depth. But I always seem to be the odd man out in my group of players. I sense they feel more comfortable with other cowboy chord players.
I liked the Rig Rundown clip with JD Simo where some of his buddies were in the background. He laid out some wicked fast lick and they're laughing and one says "Hey, man...leave some for the rest of us." :Loved it.
In the guitar level world I'm probably the equivalent of a viola player in an orchestra sawing away on quarter notes while a guy like you Tom is Itshak Perlman dazzling the world. I'm content in that support role. Never needed to be the best guitarist anywhere I guess. Guitar to me is one of the few things in life that is constantly challenging
Uncle Larry, love the way you use your right hand, beautiful stuff. By the way, as a hand surgeon, I have noticed that your ability to adduct your small finger of your left hand (ie move your small finger away from your ring finger) seems to exceed that of us normal humans. Most likely due to your years of hard work on your instrument. Thanks for all of your musical nuggets.
Hey Tom, I just now realized why I drifted away from similar RUclips videos and now watch all of your videos. For being an incredible musician and player, your a regular guy…and although confident, your not arrogant. The fact the you compliment so many other musicians is great. Your kind of like…the guitar player equivalent of a crazy good looking female who acts as if she doesn’t know how good looking she is.
Personally speaking, I've always tried to be the 'Best'. Playing obsessively, searching for the coolest tricks, and applying them to my Trade. My reward, forty eight years being able to make a living with a Guitar. Am I better than someone down the street? I don't care anymore. As Long as I'm better than I was yesterday. It has been my pleasure to be Humbled by you Tom. And reminded that I still have mountains to climb, and Music to make. Thanks Uncle Larry...
Thanks bud that was one of your best. Good to seeing you looking so well as we're all concerned about our dear uncle. Just wanted to thank you for all you've given us since Covid. Just wondering what your thought process might be when composing the progression you just played? Cheers!
please don't ever shutup tom. what you say has equal value to what you show the homeskoolers when you play/teach/show. its all so good to see and hear. thank you tom.
Larry, you’re totally right. I think the reason is that as creatures, we are instinctively drawn to seek comfort. Therefore we stop at good enough. To really reach the top, in anything (sports, business, music) you have to spend the majority of your time outside your comfort zone, and you have to train yourself to seek that discomfort. If you want to be the best pub cover band guitarist in your town, the amount of time you have to spend outside your comfort zone is a lot less than if you want to be a session player in Nashville. Also, the reason those rudimentary guitar channels are popular is that they spend more time on production and marketing, while the serious cats are too busy practicing guitar… and there’s nothing wrong with that, like you said.
Hey Tommy, do one of those pentatonic licks over blues! LOL.. that was hilarious. Only because it’s something I would and think it’s cool. Ha ha I suck but love your channel!
Amen to hating the shopping malls. I lived in Nashville for 20 years and went to 100 Oaks mall once, Rivergate mall once, Hickory Hollow mall once, Bellevue mall once (to watch the great Louie Shelton play) and Cool Springs Galleria twice. Every time because there was no other commercial alternative for the product/service I was needing at the moment.
Don't even own a guitar. I am here for the humor and the snippets of music. That opening piece was glorious! Your comments section is the best on RUclips. People are always suggesting other artists and I have run across some gems thanks to the VCB. I did have some nice guitars that were stolen in the 80's. I just threw in the towel at that point.
Well Tom, I'm going to answer your question with one of your pet peaves.😂 Yer not wrong. I think you are absolutely right about people not wanting to get hammered by unrealistic possibilities. It is the rare person who sees the opportunity and takes that chance. I thank God for enough sense to get off that train before I ended up dead like so many other musicians, but the obsession with being on stage is never gone.🤘 You know that feeling when you walk out on the stage with 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, or areanas, and outside venues of 50, 60, 100,000 plus? Hearing the screams, feeling that energy from the crowd and everyone on stage.... Man that is intoxicating. The funny thing is, I am the invisible man because I walked away, and I'm ok with that. I appreciate this channel because it is genuine. The trash talking in the studios, at Gruhns, and on stage, the live shows with Anne and the Dawgs, and the window into real life as a musician and session man. You are a great dad and a thinkin man, I like that. This channel is therapy for the invisible. Thanks man.🤙
Hey Tom. I’m one of those bar band guys and I agree 1000% except for one thing. A lot of those channels with lots of subscribers all have high production values. Nice cameras and record all the guitar parts through a DAW or whatever. I watch very few of those channels. I watch your channel more than anything because of what I learn from you and the guys you talk to. For me I don’t need all the great video and audio. I honestly think that has something to do with the number of subscribers but I could be wrong.

It took me awhile to figure out the content you provide really is perfect. Thank you for what you do UL. Hope you keep on going. My chording hand has never been more accurate and understanding.
Loved that jam!! Your guitar sounds awesome…looks similar to my strat (‘82 Fullerton re-issue of that exact guitar) except yours sounds in tune up and down the fret board. Dammit!
Thanks Tom for the inspiring playing! Watching you makes me work on my dynamics, pick attack, etc.... You're on such higher level and it demonstrates what a lifetime of hard work can achieve! Every day I watch your videos, it puts me in a great mood!
thank you sir
😍 love this episode!
Y. A. Tittle was a rough mamma jamma. Imagine what the other guy looked like! 😳 Great video Tom as always. The things we learn at Homeskoolin’..we’re a lucky bunch. ❤️
amazing as usual
Love the intro! Conjures up Jim Messina’s Angry Eyes intro, which I thought was the coolest thing ever in 1975. Speaking of conjuring, I was nudged to go down memory lane with 10cc - and share with my grandsons.
The wellspring of creativity continues!
Outstanding!
Tom Yet another incredible playing Adventure!! ThankYou Mate!
And as for Teaching vs. Playing:
The Rule is…
Those who play…. PLAY & Those who don’t… TEACH 😵
Cheers!
👍👍👍
PS:
I alway was amazed by Clarence Gatemouth Brown who never took a Lesson in his life.
He was totally self taught Clarence even tuned his guitar to his own type of tuning because that is all he knew!!!
Completely Amazing Cat with an amazing Musical History !
Man I could listen to this cat talk all day.
This is so much more enjoyable than jazz. He just keeps changing and everything sounds really good.
Yay Uncle Larry!
Thanks bud that was one of your best. Good to seeing you looking so well as we're all concerned about our dear uncle. Just wanted to thank you for all you've given us since Covid. Just wondering what your thought process might be when composing the progression you just played? Cheers!
If it don't inspire I ain't a buyer! Cheers Tom!!
please don't ever shutup tom. what you say has equal value to what you show the homeskoolers when you play/teach/show. its all so good to see and hear. thank you tom.
You, Kenny Wayne and Mike Wanchic killed it tonight at Farm Aid👍🏻👍🏻 what a great line up tonight. Will 90 yo and Bob 82!!! Amazing!
A song that clearly uses the "Naughty Triad" is "Faded Love" by PreThing. Glad to hear it has a name :-)
How in the hell do I flow like that? Props Uncle Larry!! Beautiful my friend..
Soul. Thank you.
Hahaaa…right on man. The comment section is pretty dope around here I must admit
The white and gold Gretsch is my fav guitar of yours. It reminds me of an expensive piece of jewelry.
Well Tom,
I'm going to answer your question with one of your pet peaves.😂
Yer not wrong.
I think you are absolutely right about people not wanting to get hammered by unrealistic possibilities.
It is the rare person who sees the opportunity and takes that chance.
I thank God for enough sense to get off that train before I ended up dead like so many other musicians, but the obsession with being on stage is never gone.🤘
You know that feeling when you walk out on the stage with 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, or areanas, and outside venues of 50, 60, 100,000 plus?
Hearing the screams, feeling that energy from the crowd and everyone on stage.... Man that is intoxicating.
The funny thing is, I am the invisible man because I walked away, and I'm ok with that.
I appreciate this channel because it is genuine. The trash talking in the studios, at Gruhns, and on stage, the live shows with Anne and the Dawgs, and the window into real life as a musician and session man.
You are a great dad and a thinkin man, I like that.
This channel is therapy for the invisible.
Thanks man.🤙
The Guitar Whisperer gives another master class on what makes an instrument *that* instrument
Extra props beyond your normal teachings, very cool
I just got rid of my ‘68 SG Special because it just never got played. Cool guitar but I just wasn’t drawn to it. Turned it into a gold top Les Paul that I can’t put down. Great episode…but all your episodes are great.
