You nailed it brother, the power in his words alone could move mountains of struggle for any musician, young and old (like me)! Watching him play, hearing his touch, tone, and logic musically, is beyond comprehension!
Here in 2024 going round a second time. There is so much wisdom in Tom’s videos. I’ve learned and practised more in the last 6 months than i have in the last 30 years thanks to Tom and Guthrie Trapp’s videos.
God! What a beautiful intro....if I could pull that kind of thing off the top of my head, I'd be the happiest man alive. Tom, you're a national treasure.
When you hear phrasing from Masters like Bukovac , trapp, Asato, Mancuso, Govan, and a few others including older guys like Larry carlton,, Robben Ford, Lukather, Tim Pierce, Peter Frampton of old, Kossoff it really shows you how very few pure blues players outside of Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King some Eric Clapton, Blues rockers Lake Hendrix, Eric johnson, Joe Bonamassa Doyle bramhall Ii, Derek trucks, Josh Smith and of course there are others, you realize how incredible phrasing can be whether it's just gorgeous lines like these ones, for the flow of ideas that are exciting and always go from a lightning fast transition to a beautiful phrase what you see in Guthrie Govan really helps me understand hello there are lots of great players but how the best players have something to say that is so fucking authentic and beautiful. Which kind of phrasing is something that is exactly what you want to hear and organic but it's so rare that people play with this level of awareness improvised off a couple chords is something that very few people including great guitar players can just pull beautiful phrase after beautiful phrase out of thin air. Watching this and learning it will definitely improve your playing, but if you simply watch it and don't study it, the phrases you thought you had it down and you thought were cool will seem so boring. And I'm talking about classic Blues legs that people link together and if they time them right sound incredible. This however it's just on a higher level because he is saying exactly what he wants to not limited by anything other than ideas he has such a fretboard awareness and knows what the sounds are going to be before he plays and it's instinctive that he just says he's beautiful phrases on the guitar as if he's having a deep conversation with you or as if you are reading some of the best prose by someone like F Scott Fitzgerald or Shakespeare. His phrases 7:02 arr bursting with meaning and😢 are poignant and eloquent. Play solos with better articulation than a master wordsmith. It's the most pleasing thing I probably heard.
“... pre- internet, ... play for hours and hours and hours without feeling like you’re missing out.” How true is that statement to us all, I know I’m guilty of FOMO and short attention span feeling the need to switch to a new song, or feeling I need to be practicing a different skill or technique. Tom- ism +5 . “High in musical nutrients” 😀
Today I finally understand why you’re so good, Tom Bukovac. That was intensely profound, yet rooted in so much humility and respect for the craft. Here’s hoping you’ll carve a few minutes a week to continue Tom Time once this pandemic blows over.
I never found the secret to "practicing" when I was involved in full time work. In the middle of 80 + hr weeks, I would go home (usually out of town), eat something, sit down to play and be asleep in about 10 minutes. I never produced much in the way of progress but it sure did let me decompress. I just figured if it was therapeutic - then so be it.
Not boring great insight I am 40 yrs playing amateur and the fresh part is where I am expanding into learning the details.thnx for the advice! ❤ awesome playing there
Tom, the thing that you said about trying to get chuck berry right, i`ve had with Panama, from Van Halen. It was sooo hard to get it right and then I gave up! It's possible to get the notes right, but the shuffle, the swing, just can't. Hearing it from a pro like u, it gives me some hug for my crying! haha
Tom, in your rig rundown you said you can’t play guitar unless they are set up perfect. Can you talk us though how you set up your guitars for your touch?
Everybody says it’s so important to learn where all the notes are on the neck instantly, but what’s the best way to learn the notes on the neck. It’s like impossible for me to
Tom, not sure if you’re still reading these, but a video I would love to see is your top 10 or top 20 “Uncle Larry’s Picks” of the songs you think would be most nutritious for guitarists to learn. I love your channel, your playing, and philosophy.
Tom I hope you keep making these videos because they are so inspiring. That two chord jam at the beginning was just amazing man. I’m a guitar player from the UK and just totally in awe. Keep up the awesome work!
It's not boring. I would get as much if not more from my old drum teacher when he would talk to me about drumming. As opposed to just monitoring me playing rudiments. For those of us that will probably never meet you. This is great.
The insight into how you struggle for perfection is relieving. You make it "look" like you just know and play everything perfectly effortlessly. It's nice to know that it takes that much effort even from such an amazing performer as yourself. Thank you
Don’t think I’ve ever commented on a RUclips video, just posted a few: Dang, I wish I had seen this channel 3.5 years ago when I was sitting in my garage re-learning how to re-play the guitar after a fretting hand injury that messed me up, plus that other stupid stuff going on, forced me into the garage. I had a guitar teacher in 1983, my only paid lessons. His name was David R. He owned American Dream Music in San Diego, and he gave guitar lessons as well. He was a fantastic guitarist. Was in a band called Brain Police back in the 60’s. One of his lessons was pick a note, and find all positions on the fretboard. He had me do it in whatever time, let’s say a 4 count. F,F,F,F, then onto the next random note, like a C sharp or something and do it again. Great lesson. Oh yeah, and sing “F” along with it. Then gradually speed it up and drop to a 3 or 2 count. David ended up firing me, the student, for lack of commitment. He was pissed I was wasting what he perceived as talent, and wasn’t going to waste my mom’s money, if I wasn’t practicing. He kind of shamed me, deservedly, and I walked out with my tail between my legs. There were a few other great lessons he gave me. Maybe I’ll post them up sometime. Thanks for the channel, uncle Larry. Not monetized. You are a special breed, and a phenomenal gittar slinger.
Recently found your channel and feel like I found a wise old friend. Your playing, touch and soulfulness is so right on that you’ve brought me to tears a couple of times. May sound strange but your playing reminds me of the late Shannon Hoon’s beautiful voice. Feel like you guys would’ve made amazing music together. Thanks for all you do, brother. All the best to you and yours. Cheers from the Texas Gulf Coast! 🍻
"Street theory"....love it. Surprised to learn that you don't read. However, always thought you did as you're talking 3rds and 4ths a lot of times. That's the street theory. Great stuff. These volumes are the silver lining of the Covid bullshit. Rock it bruh !
There was something magical about pre internet days, there was a different kind of quality to practise and uninterruption. Equally the internet has provided a plethora of information. Love your videos man.
And sometimes it's too much information today. It distracts you from actual playing. So, I often tell myself... NOPE... just grab the guitar now and feature things out yourself.
Dude ! Your about as down to earth as they come and one talented MoFo. I really enjoyed the open of this session. Maybe you can’t sing but you mss as me that beautiful guitar sing long a song bird. Thanks for all the solid advice too. 😎🤙
"Boring???" You could not be further away from boring!! This is the stuff that NOBODY tells you!! And you've taught me more in these 10 - 15 minute chunks than I have learned in the last 5 years! Thank you, and PLEASE keep on putting these videos up!
Tom, watching your Corona series from a hobbyist / cover band guitar player perspective is humbling and inspiring. There's such an enormous difference b/t the professional (you) and the weekend warrior (me) . But one thing that we have in common is the passion. I see your face go sideways when you hit some notes/licks that feel so good, it moves you. I feel that and feel your kindness with these videos. So thanks for the Corona series, its inspired me to try and improve my game!! Cheers!!
Sometimes, you gotta go back and relearn what you have already learned. Pearls of wisdom on this one. Appreciate the medicine, Doc! #homeskoolin #unclelarry
Not boring brother just the best way to let someone know what you really need to know without having to pay some asshole 40 bucks an hour to sqrew you all up man Tom I have been soaking up all the knowledge that I can dude these lessons are something that I look forward to what can we do to get you not to stop teaching thanks brother from the other beer drinking Clevelander hope you and your family are staying safe 🙏 God bless us all
So tasty. What you said about knowing where every note is and thinking without playing is of course true, and it reminded me of Robert Fripp saying the exact same thing decades ago. I wish I could do it, but the longer I play, the closer I get, so it's all good. I learned the same way: vinyl. Needle in the groove. We all did back then. Very good for the ears.
Thank you for your honest expression. I so much feel the same way, about so many things. When asked to conjure someone else's work up... Giving up after trying to re-create Chuck Berry... Thank you! Thank you thank you. What a gift!
Hi Tom! Never ever boring, ever!! Always enjoy my "Tom Time" ;-). We miss you up here in Sun Valley. Can't wait to see you and throw back some beers. Hope you and your family are safe and doing well.
Heck no that's not boring! I think a lot us aspire to have the skill to not have to think about how to respond when playing, but to just be able to respond and have a conversation with the other musicians that we're playing with. And also to those that are listening to that conversation, the audience.
Not boring. I’ve been playing guitar over 50 years. It’s nice to hear you think out loud. It’s like I’m talking to myself... I can see your holding the pick sideways. Me too
I’m so glad to hear you say the truth about “street theory and what “””real cats “” true musicians do. I was recently told but a guy that is good in his own right (don’t get me wrong I give credit where it’s due ). That I just have to learn theory that I’m living in a box if I don’t. And let me tell you Tom , you blow this guy out of the water 100 times. There’s so much to be said for taste, touch, nuance and knowing how to get tones. Reading music does not give you any of that. Sure if a person is talented I’m sure it helps. But it’s not necessary.
kevin apgar agree 💯. Tom nails it here. Heavy jazz harmony and complex chord substitutions not necessary for pop/rock/country/r&b. Basic diatonic chord theory will get it done on 90% of gigs from my experience.
With you on learning Beatles Tom. Melodically and harmonically rich as. I did it and boy did it help. Those guys were rare talents. Thank you for great advice.
I sometimes try to talk to people about that place where my mind goes when I get in what I think people are talking about when they refer to “flow.” It’s an elusive thing and what keeps me from getting there are constraints I create myself. Sometimes I will get freaked out by someone in the audience or something. But when my mind is free, the music flows thoughtlessly. It is an elusive thing and I think all artists, creatives, thinkers share the gift. I have often wondered if that is not part of the reason so many of us have turned to drugs, etc, as a way of trying to access that feeling in demand. None of that shit ever worked for me.
well….its readily apparent as to why you can make your living with a guitar …. and most of us don't ….you have a great touch and very fluid phrasing…. just fantastic to watch… you should keep this up after the world returns to whatever normal is going to be… it really is great to watch…thanks again !!!
I’ve failed every attempt of Johnny Be Good. Scotty Be Bad. Sublime frustration. I love discovery by trying and failing. 1 out of 50 times you land on the totally unexpected, yet perfect resolution to what you just played. Opens new doors or answers the question of a 10 year old riff. Keep them coming. Did I hear the beginning riff of the orchestral segue of “Live and let Die”, less my ears deceived me? Stay well everyone.
Jack Pearson has much of the same advice in interviews. Know the notes on the fretboard and learn songs not riffs. Such simple points that so many players neglect (present company included...) Thanks for the sage advice Tom. #tomtime
Tom Not boring actually super interesting Love these corona vids by the way the guitar chords you played with Sarah and Ripples performance ruled. Any Chance of another Sarah and Tom song? Thanks
Your not boring man ! This is amazing for us . This videos are to short ! The playing in those Ebo amps videos is absolutely amazing ! Those fast licks are great and unique. Maybe a lesson about that stuff.
Rewatching... Best lesson ever !! Learn both the mental and the muscular. When practicing a riff, also learn the note names on the fretboard and the scale degree (flat 3rd, etc.). Learn songs with high musical content. Learn it so you're not just faking it, but can make it sound like the original. There's a lifetime of never being in a rut, or being bored. Thanks Tom. You're the best.
Just loving these Tom. Really dig the thing about the timbre related to the string. Such a big big thing. Also. Street Theory! Love it. That really should be a book.
Definitely not boring Tom. I've been playing bass for 47 years and there's always something new to learn - and today listening to you I learnt a helluva lot more. Big thank you. Great stuff, crack on and stay well!
Thanks to this quarantine I’ve been spending hours and hours figuring stuff out - still shaking a 2 year old head injury which makes it a bit harder but I’m still enjoying these vids and I share your enjoyment of everything about records. Been at this 40 years myself
Fantastic, love the simple chords progression with a ton of different voicing, accents and colours...You’re painting music! a true a artist, very inspiring, keep,it coming please!
My answer to your last question is HELL NO! I just ran across the lessons, thanks, you have given this want to be guitarist great things to listen for, to and work on! Keep it up!
This is great to hear, even as a 50-something player who's still around intermediate. I would love to hear you talk about what is street theory, what kinds of things. My memory isn't what it used to be, so I'd like everything I memorize to be really worth it. There are still parts of the guitar I don't know instantly, where I have to think about it.
“Street theory” would basically mean something like the numbers system. It’s universal, and immediately applicable. u can tell a musician it’s a “1 6 2 5” etc and they’ll know what u mean.
This series of videos is a true gift that has made this craziness more tolerable. Love your playing and conversation style dialog. Love to sit and drink multiple beers with you! Thanks very much for what you are doing.
All things come with practice just got to put the work in. I believe there are only seven musical notes - not 12 as you say - but hey! I get your drift completely man. Big fan of your playing and musical philosophy, especially on this topic, would also like to add the joy in playing is in learning and listening...this is never-ending trip thankfully. Amen from the UK.
...keep goin' ;) ?! WELL your "show" got a name >> Tom Time!! So I guess with a name that great you might just have too :). Hey joke by side, thx for the infos ya share with us folks here, very soulful and honest. A good place to pick up on some great details which makes the guitar the thing you never stop learning on. Very cool, big thx and all back best ya over on the other side of the pond. Best Regards from Finland.
Wow this is GOLDEN information (sorry for stealing your phrase youKnowWho3311). But it was so spot on. Learning the street smarts form the Bad Ass Cat. Invaluable stuff, thanks Tom.
"is that boring?" - NO DUDE :) Keep up the good work. I dig you, you really nailed this one... I second your practicing advice even tho I'm not pro player- the best way to learn is to cover songs/peaces you can learn from and then to investigate theory/techniques to sound genuine.. But you have to be born for this approach, you know what I mean.. You have to hear it, know it and than practice sh)(/t ;) So for a genuine player ear and will is a must. Cheers and greetings from Bosnia PS "Tom's time" sounds waaaaay better than "Corona lessons". I really forgot about it for 15 min or so
Tom. I would trade most of the armchair expertise I see on You Tube for the Corona Lessons alone. Thank you. Tone is in the fingers. Phrasing is in the voice. Gear is a mark in our bank account.
Hey man love your style. It's about how I play. Taught myself too.. but I hate learning other people's music. I can. I'm a writer always. All my life never interested in others music other than listening.. I teach music now. I just can't make myself learn except for my students.. my heads full of stuff and that's all I want to play. .. ok I'm done lol
Not boring Tom, it’s all Pearls. You’re like the coolest next door neighbor who I spot in his garage. You wave me over and we have a beer and we chat about guitar. It’s an odd thing, RUclips.. . Thanks buddy ✌🏼
Great videos Tom! Thanks for the taking the "Time" to share your mind set and love of music with us. I am also enjoying your chilled out attitude. It is like therapy during these trying times. Additionally, I love your Mixolydian vibe. I usually stick to the more straight major licks, 5 minutes after hearing this my phrasing sounds so much better. Additionally, I too love coffee and a good cold beer. 👍 See you next time. Peace
Why did it take me so long to find out this channel? Am I that stupid? Fantastic material, beautifully presented, you're amazing, sir, keep up this incredible work in post-coronian times, please. Cheers from Brazil.
It's GOLD, this is gold. Listen up young cats, you should feel so lucky to get this level of advice for free.
100%
This is the second greatest bit of advice here today, second only to the video itself.
For real. I feel like I’m a kid taking lessons again with a cool dude and even cooler player
Absolutely! 👍
You nailed it brother, the power in his words alone could move mountains of struggle for any musician, young and old (like me)! Watching him play, hearing his touch, tone, and logic musically, is beyond comprehension!
Well so far I can't make it past the intro without restarting it. Someday i'll make it to the rest of the video,
Here in 2024 going round a second time. There is so much wisdom in Tom’s videos. I’ve learned and practised more in the last 6 months than i have in the last 30 years thanks to Tom and Guthrie Trapp’s videos.
Don't know what it is about Tom and Guthrie but they've had the same effect on me.
🤘 😝 🤘
“High in musical nutrients “. That’s an awesome perspective.
“It took me like a whole day to learn it.”
- Tom Bukov
"It took me like a whole day to work out the first chord"

Way better than Netflix. Truly Inspirational!
The opposite of boring. Master class in how to be a real musician. Thank you
Not boring great insight I am 40 yrs playing amateur and the fresh part is where I am expanding into learning the details.thnx for the advice! ❤ awesome playing there
It was great to hear that even the great uncle Larry struggles with Johnny b. Goode. I've tried every few years and never seem to get close.
"Learn songs in high musical nutrients" I love it
Had to give this a rewatch as I remember watching this when it came out. I’m a minute in and godddd that tone is wild!!!
I come back here a few times a year just to hear that opening jam.
Tom, the thing that you said about trying to get chuck berry right, i`ve had with Panama, from Van Halen. It was sooo hard to get it right and then I gave up!

Don’t think I’ve ever commented on a RUclips video, just posted a few:

The touch and dynamics in Tom's playing is endlessly inspiring. Just fantastic. To me guitar playing doesn't get any better than that intro.

I could loop these videos for days and subconsciously absorb these nuggets of gold during sleep,
I could listen to this for hours
#tomtime
I completely agree about trying to play exactly like Chuck Berry. Also thanks for hanging out in your garage, I thought I was the only one.
Most useful 14 minutes I’ve heard in my musical career man..... keep em coming
This is the best thing on RUclips right now. Haven’t been able to stop practicing since these have started.
Tom Not boring actually super interesting Love these corona vids by the way the guitar chords you played with Sarah and Ripples performance ruled. Any Chance of another Sarah and Tom song? Thanks
Me: listening on the edge of my seat
Tom: Is that boring?
Haha great stuff
Is that boring?? Edge of my seat brother. You are a guy that not only gets it but can put it out there. Thanks for sharing, extremely expiring.
1) I’d love to see Tom play live with his own group
2) I want to be able to play like Tom
Incredible playing and very inspiring
And the winner is this guy ... for relatable musician talk. Every word has a purpose
Your not boring man ! This is amazing for us . This videos are to short ! The playing in those Ebo amps videos is absolutely amazing ! Those fast licks are great and unique. Maybe a lesson about that stuff.
Man, this lesson hits hard. Thanks for all your time on the camera, Larry. Beautiful musings.
To me this was one of the best lessons, esp starting about 10:15 when he talks about playing riffs all over the fretboard.
I've been playing bass for 47 years and
there's always something new to learn - and today listening to you I
learnt a helluva lot more. Big thank you. Great stuff, crack on and stay
well!
Keep it up!
So glad I found this guy
This is great wisdom! Hope what you are giving us will inspire kids coming up! It does me and I am 63!
Watching again for the X# time...THANKS BUK!!!
No BS, just the truth. I dig it man. I dig it the most...
Guitars, beer and Robocop. This is the best place ever.
Going through the older versions of HomeSkoolin, man am I thankful you kept this going, the last two episodes I watched things were up in the air.
The CAGED system is great to play around with too. It's helped me "unlock" the fretboard.
Amazing as usual Uncle Larry. Never gets old
This is great to hear, even as a 50-something player who's still around intermediate.
I’d love to have this transcribed. Learn it note for note. And play it over and over and over again.
Thanks for all that. Night practicing is coming back. Cheers from Italy
Lot of wisdom in this episode.
Thanks so much for doing these everyday Tom... bloody awesome
Thanks....loving the casual conversation, and no editing. Keep it real. Cheers brother.
Great advice in this video from many many beers ago.
Cheers and greetings from Bosnia
PS "Tom's time" sounds waaaaay better than "Corona lessons".
Great advice on learning the whole tune!
Damn listen to this!
