“Don’t let it intimidate you, let it inspire you.” I watch ALL of Tom’s stuff and have to remind myself of this mantra all the time! Brett, thank you for hosting these in-depth lessons with Uncle Larry! Awesome-and inspiring-stuff.
Absolutely agree he literally claims in the video that he has 40-50k hrs playing time which is unfathomable 😂 but anyone can get thus good at something as long as there doing it for a living and are passionate about it 👍
Ain't no one like the Doctor, the King of the Six String, Uncle Larry, the Starship Trooper. Appreciate you having some time together and inviting all of us in!
A "Picking Lesson"! -what an understatement! Anytime Uncle Larry gets in front of the camera, you are going to get incredible guitar technique of all sorts, a distinct philosophy of music making, impeccable tone, references musicians you haven't heard of but need to look up immediately, and valuable life lessons! But I applaud you Brett Papa for doing your best to help us understand the massive musical talent the is Tom Bucovac! You two are a great pairing and I look forward to the videos to come!
It’s not just the mastery of the instrument, it’s the mastery of the music. Thanks for sharing uncle Larry. Thanks for bringing him to the masses Brett.
There’s a few guys like him, Martin Miller and RJ Ronquillo where musical styles are blurred. If I learn one lick it somehow can be applied to every genre. Then guys like Guthrie Trapp and Danish Pete who are great for if you started from country phrasing/technique. And of course Andy Wood is a master of the instrument. Tho, I find him a bit more difficult to learn from cause of his 80s/Van Halen roots. Shoutout to.
I've been a homeskooler since around Episode 30, and my guitar playing and musicality has developed wonderfully because of it. Let's not understate the value of these videos. It's pure gold. Thanks, Brett and Tom.
Incredible stuff from Uncle Larry but also a shout out to Brett for being so dialled into what was happening in front of him and asking the perfect question at just the right time.
One thing that separates Tom from other guitarists (as you hinted with the question about if he already knew Yellow Brick Road) is how good his ears are. And, how he can pull what he is hearing out of the instrument. He did a video playing a pop song from the 80s called "Waiting for a Star to Fall" and I was so floored that I had to put away the guitar for a couple of days. He captured the essence of the full arrangement in a few layers on the looper. I had to just spend some time thinking about all of the elements that would go into such a thing. And, figure out how to try and improve my own skills from my current position.
I love Tom. I've been a fan since around 2009. He mentions his finger injury here....he had (maybe it's still up) a video he posted from his garage shortly after he started playing again, and it blew my mind. Noone has transformed my playing more than Tom. This was a FANTASTIC lesson. Thanks for posting this.
I love how Tom wants Brett to get it and slows it all down even unplugged just to give it to him. I too cut my finger on a chop saw and almost lost it. Thought it was over, but I healed and because i had to use other fingers I became a way better player than I ever would have. Forever a student and never giving up.
What a jaw-dropping player. Holy smokes. Kinda makes me want to give up and sell my gear and kinda makes me want to quit my job and woodshed 24/7 lol. Kudos to Brett for setting his ego aside and just reveling in his astonishment like the rest of us without any hint of weirdness or jealousy. When he just laughs and shakes his head we all know exactly how he feels.
I am just in love with Tom's 58's neck PU. Any video he makes with it I watch it multiple times. Finally found a R0 that has a similar sounding neck PU.
The man is just ferociously talented and a phenomenal example of what can truly be achieved if you dedicate your whole life to music and an instrument. Uncle Larry continues to inspire...
I felt so privileged to have the first video of rhythm tips. I’m beside myself to have another one of these videos to rewatch countless times. Thank you, Brett and Tom!
The nice thing about picking like Tom using "forearm rotation," is that you get "pick escape" on both the down and upstroke. That makes changing strings much easier and efficient. Great video. Thanks for sharing the insights of such an awesome Pro. 😎
This post is amazing. Thank you for the lesson Tom. This was amazing to listen to, reflect upon, employ. Ive decided to keep a seperate guitar journal to bullet these concepts and practice them just for my journey. I appreciate you sharing of wisdom way more than you will ever know. Thanks from WNC!
This is incredible. An absolute goldmine of information. I feel like Brett and I had the same reactions at the same times - every time Uncle Larry would do something ridiculous, we would both start laughing or exclaim something! Thanks so much guys!
Papa, Uncle Larry, this is right to the heart of the matter of being a musician on any instrument. Papa asking Larry super great questions, and the answers got my thinking going into a better direction. Why we are drawn into taking up learning an instrument. This lesson renewed my understanding why I love learning and playing musical instruments. You guys not only showed us and explained things. But helped me look deeper into reason of being a musician. Please keep this stuff coming. You know this is great help and motivation for all who attend. Thanks Wolfman
The main thing people need to realise is you pick, fingerpick, fret, use certain fingers, different pressures all that mechanical stuff, the way you do it naturally to you, just keep doing it how you naturally do it, and that will be a big part of your unique sound. Tom is Tom, Papa is papa, you are who you are and that's great 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
We can all learn thing to help improve our style and technique. I am using tons of the tips in this video already with great results. But you are also right you have to do what works for you.
Hey Brett great lesson.. one thing that most lessons will never touch on with picking is the radius of the strings , if it’s not set up right it will mess you up . understanding the depth of the strings when changing from low to high or high to low .. most will struggle and not know why . I could be wrong but , it was an eye opener for me !
Uncle Larry!! Seriously my favorite uncle by FAR! Lord have mercy!!! Great segment Mr. Papa!! So much information packed into a glorious 45 minutes. Thank you, sirs!!!! 🙏🙏
One unmentioned thing among all the other amazing things in this video is… Uncle Larry’s RIGHT thumb holding down that solid beat on that low E all the while distracting us with dazzling melodic lines with the other fingers… Great video guys!
This guy is a living legend I think. And that stuff around 28 minutes in C minor using the B string is awesome especially if you’re playing by yourself
Būk’s playing is, for me, the ideal blend of melody and fire. Great insight into his playing here. FWIW, the type patterns shown I’ve often heard referred to as “coils” - 3 notes ascending back to start as a 4 note pattern. Then begin at the second note and retreat pattern. I practice those in all manner of combination… good for breaking through barriers, for me. Thanks for sharing, Brett and Tom. Cheers!
Tom is a genius. I could listen to him play forever. He isn’t just technically gifted, he is so incredibly musical. I’m not sure there has ever been anyone better to do it.
You fellahs are awesome! Uncle Larry: "If you can play difficult stuff easily, then you can play simple stuff really easily." Thank you so much the content. I appreciate you both!
The music just absolutely flows out of this guy, this is someone that was literally born to play guitar you can literally hear and see his mind working. These videos have to be a regular thing. The last two I have watched more than 5 times over just sitting on the floor with my guitar and trying to absorb everything he is saying. I just don’t understand how someone can get to this level of fluidity. I play for 3-4 hours a day and have for a longgg time and watching people like Tom play is extremely inspiring and motivating but also extremely discouraging because I know I’ll never reach that level or anywhere close to this.
It’s not about reaching Tom’s level it about being inspired to play. It’s like being bummed you will never play basketball like Jordan. Take what you can and just have fun. The stuff in these videos has already made me a better player.
thanks for that! Love us some Uncle Larry! And...you're right - we'll never be as good as Tom, but we can glean some understanding that we've never had before. I'm 71,still playing and still learning - it's what keeps me going!
Tom is utterly unique, the countless hours in the studio, being “raised by wolves” as he said, his entire environment, all come together to make him irreplaceable. But we can be inspired and aim to get maybe 10% of his magic and thats more then enough 🤘🤘
What he did with Yellow Brick Road was cool. It would be awesome to have a video doing just that. Picking random songs and having him explain his thought process while searching the chords/notes/melodies out.
Christmas came early, Uncle Larry is finally starting to explain things. The way he plays chords is beyond belief. He usually just whips out one of the most interesting things in between sips of beer, no explanation, no information. Just pure genius, that he may take for granted.
Pure wisdom. Taste, tone, technique. Tom has it all. And yeah terrifying is the right word. Somehow everything he plays is always fresh new and exciting. He is one of the greatest guitar players of all time.
This guitarist is amazing. He is right, it´s all about relaxation in the picking hand. Other factors must be considered as well, like a good cardiovascular system and genetics. Great content. Keep going !🎸
Brett, you the man, the feeling you must capture being in the company of such a Great Man, his character and musical prowess and experience of the world of music,I’m sure there is a word to describe Tom B. But Brett I know it adds to you as a person and your craft. With your own amazing music rubbing shoulders with the likes of the greats as you do, I can only Imagine how Amazing you will be as you continue on in your journey, hey???? Who gets to spend time with great guitarist..... uh BRETT PAPA does. Thank you brother for sharing these times with us.
I haven't seen Toms videos in a while on my feed but I thank Brett for these two that I've seen recently. So much great technique and playing that I hadn't been aware of with Tom's playing. He's an old school Beast. Great stuff
This guy is an example of a true virtuoso ! …. And he knows he can still get better , and is drivin by his passion !! … 😎awesome interaction as always , great job Brett and you rock that thing pretty dang good yourself ❤
Melody. I would love to see a lesson with Tom talking about how he thinks about/comes up with melodies. He is such an incredible musician, but his sense of melody is some of the best in the world.
This is gold. I'm at that level where a lot of times when I decide to find something new to work on, I get frustrated that what I find online is stuff I've already been over, and thinking "I know there's more that's possible to do with this thing, but where is it?". When In started watching Tom, I found loads of things to try, and these videos with Brett and Tom are even better, because they're genuinely fun to watch, too. Many thanks to both of you guys.
Totally inspired! I just saw a video with him playing with Ann Wilson and he was playing at BC. Rich brought back some memories and he was totally on point in the show. A little intimidating my son has me picking the guit fiddle up again after 32 years. Love you Kats great sense of humor great attitude thanks so much !
Tom always sends me straight to playing for the songs body without saying a word about it . It's infectious Slow down, feel every note, let the dynamics take you places you've never been before.
If Uncle Larry were to record an entire cohesive course on guitar, I would almost pay any amount for it. I would honestly sell all of my guitars other than one to learn lessons on. This was pure gold. Thank you.
Uncle Larry does it again… 😇 Tanx Brett for slowing it down and pressing the pause button from time to time as it is thousands of hours of work on Tom’s behalf but, as you mentioned it is Tom’s way through the world. MUSICALITY, predilection, prodigal talent? Even those blessed with it have to put in the time. And Monkey hands HELP A LOT as he stated himself.
Tom (Uncle Larry) always inspires!!! He's such a phoenominal all around player, an encylopedia of the incredible sounds you can make with the guitar, that constantly opens my ears & approach to playing. Thank you Brett for doing these!!
Liquid digital inspiration. After the first ten minutes I HAD to pick my guitar up and start practicing. Best video I've watched this year. Thanks guys!!!
Brett, thanks for this spectacular display of Tom's skills. I, like you found myself shaking my head and laughing with a "what the heck did you just do?!" look on my face. Every pro out there who has seen this probably has started to practice more. Man oh man.
Seriously Mr Brett, your content with this guy Tom is masterclass stuff. Absolutely love the rhythm lesson and now this picking lesson. With learning a new way to play the guitar is making it fresh, fun and awe inspiring.
Thank you, guys! There’s so much in this one. Most importantly for me, all the real struggles, when recording acoustics, and all the other real issues, just playing - basically, keeping s*** quiet. The way these things were presented here is, honestly, a rarity. Fantastic to hear the best encountering challenges, that the self taught - like myself - tend to believe, we are alone in facing.
When it REALLY counts, Tom's playing is NOT about pattern based shred, he's all about REAL ideas, and phrasing, with a super strong narrative quality, and an extra helping of point and purpose. His extraordinary musicality, comes from the fact, that he ACTUALLY HAS SOMETHING TO SAY! His playing, is just a means to communicate WHAT HE HAS TO SAY, and the STORY he wants YOU to hear. His greatest super power, is his soulful SINCERITY! Think you can shred your way to THAT? Think AGAIN, M Fs. . . . . . . . .
Yeah, I mean, with all of that musical TALENT he has, why did he WASTE so many years and HOURS practicing his technique to be able to shred? What a waste of TIME. He could have spent that time DEVELOPING a different aspect of his playing. NOBODY wants to listen to some guy who is technically PROFICIENT on their instrument. It’s a KNOWN FACT: anybody who plays fast, is hiding their musical DEFICIENCY. Nobody should waste their time on this MEANINGLESS and USELESS ability!
@@zenlandzipline Get a grip, buddy, NOTHING is wasted, because EVERYTHING is important. All realities, require that their polar opposites are equally real, otherwise we would have no appreciation of anything. We breathe in AND out, we turn left, AND right, we move forward, AND back, we are kind, AND cruel, happy, AND sad, we play loud, AND soft, we play slow, AND fast, because WE LIVE THAT WAY. The big picture cannot be complete, without ALL PERSPECTIVES. The very idea, that ANYTHING is "meaningless" or "useless", is ridiculous myopic nonsense. Get real. . . . . . . . . .
one more thought, its so wonderful that he can be vunerable in un perfection to allow us to see the inner thought of how he approaches the instrument, Its very difficult to do this on video and allowing things to be as they are. awesome!
❤ here again! and you know early on when I started watching Tom I made a comment within the VCB about the use of his little finger. See I pay attention that’s why I’m his 1%
My partner's son (9 years old) took up the guitar and what Martin and I like best is watching Tom play. Tom is generous and it shows in his music. thanks to you two!
I'm nerding out on this lmao. I love it. As a self taught guitarist I noticed that I naturally use some of the same techniques as Tom. I'm nowhere the player that he is but I found this video to be pure gold. Thanks dudes
Thank God I never got that good in my life. I wouldn't trust myself with that much talent! Much respect "Don't let it intimidate you, let it inspire you" at 43:22 - I'm now more inspired as a grandpa, than when I was younger - thanks guys!
First of all, fuckin hell! Does one need another talk beyond this? I’ll be coming back to this one forever so thank you for that. If Tom could talk about the southern rock blues rock things a bit, put one song on the lift for us, that’ll be awesome. Thanks Brett Papa for this video!

At age 61 watching this video, I feel like a brand new guitar student watching an experienced guitar teacher all over again. Thanks Tom and Brett
I feel you completely - he could be selfish and arrogant but he’s willing to show anything, it’ll just take a few decades 😂
I love when Brett laughs at the speed. It’s all you can do, it’s mesmerising 😂
Haha for sure!
i forgot i was watching news feeds at 1.25 speed before i clicked. how do you think i feel?! lol.

This right here is the best guitar lesson online. Tom is amazing, but adding great camera work and good questions really gets the most out of this.
Glad you liked the vid! Thanks for checking it out!

That was gorgeous-
This is one of the best videos I’ve ever watched.
Thank you Brett for inviting Tom.
You guys rock!
🙌🏼
Agreed
Sure thing!
Couldn’t agree more
You will never be 'Tom' but you can be the best version of yourself. Pure Gold!!! I loved this video. Thank you both
Excellently said, yes!
Absolutely adore these intimate chats and play along moments where we all learn, jam and enjoy. A true masterpiece.
Thank you! More coming soon!
that yellow brick road thing blew me away... to be able to conjure up a song like that so accurately from just aural memory is crazy
For sure!
Tom Bukovac, the guitarists guitarist. Absolute mastery! Awesome musician 🎶🎸🎵
Totally!
I love how Tom wants Brett to get it and slows it all down even unplugged just to give it to him. I too cut my finger on a chop saw and almost lost it. Hard not to laugh at that awesomeness!
I was impressed with the picking, but the Yellow Brick Road, classical style, first time playing, was astonishing!
Tom Bucovac is such a GREAT player, and still humble and looking up to other musicians, great guy!

I just saw a video with him playing with Ann Wilson and he was playing at BC. Rich brought back some memories and he was totally on point in the show.
A little intimidating my son has me picking the guit fiddle up again after 32 years.
Love you Kats great sense of humor great attitude thanks so much !
You are welcome!
Every time I thought of a question I wanted to ask Tom, Brett asked it. Tremendous interviewer you are, mister.
THANK YOU ... ive been practicing that for a long time. Now ive got a new perspective ...
Tom always sends me straight to playing for the songs body without saying a word about it .
It's infectious
Slow down, feel every note, let the dynamics take you places you've never been before.
There are a few moments where Bukovac displays real musical talent, and what makes him great. Awesome
If Uncle Larry were to record an entire cohesive course on guitar, I would almost pay any amount for it. I would honestly sell all of my guitars other than one to learn lessons on. This was pure gold. Thank you.
Lucky for you we are filming that as I type! Coming soon!
@@BrettPapa What!!! That's AMAZING!!! Words can't express my gratitude!
Thanks Uncle Larry and Brett so inspiring.
Yes, be the best version of yourself you can be. Great perspective Brett
Thanks!
Maybe your best interview...😊
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Uncle Larry does it again… 😇
Tanx Brett for slowing it down and pressing the pause button from time to time as it is thousands of hours of work on Tom’s behalf but, as you mentioned it is Tom’s way through the world. MUSICALITY, predilection, prodigal talent? Even those blessed with it have to put in the time. And Monkey hands HELP A LOT as he stated himself.
Tom Bukovac ! I've never seen or heard anything quite like that,...Damn !
What an absolute killer player !!
❤❤my favorite
For sure! One of my all time favorites!
@@BrettPapa as his one percenter I second all that
Tom (Uncle Larry) always inspires!!!
Yes!! That is what it’s all about!
Brett, thanks for this spectacular display of Tom's skills. I, like you found myself shaking my head and laughing with a "what the heck did you just do?!" look on my face. Every pro out there who has seen this probably has started to practice more. Man oh man.
Yep Tom is one in a million! Thanks for watching!
Seriously Mr Brett, your content with this guy Tom is masterclass stuff. Absolutely love the rhythm lesson and now this picking lesson. With learning a new way to play the guitar is making it fresh, fun and awe inspiring.
Glad you like it! Wait till you see what's coming soon!!
As a pro piano player turning pro guitarist, this is literally the information I’ve been needing. GUITAR vocab.
Think AGAIN, M Fs. . . . . . . . .
Shred stuff to me never said much to me. However he has my attention. Always loved Steve Morris. Incredible
Get real. . . . . . . . . .
@@rigelloar7474 whooosh
Morse.
one more thought, its so wonderful that he can be vunerable in un perfection to allow us to see the inner thought of how he approaches the instrument, Its very difficult to do this on video and allowing things to be as they are. awesome!
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked it!
I'm watching Willie's birthday jam right now,so glad to see you actually playing hands on the wheel !awesome
Watched that last night too... drove my wife crazy I think..."there's Uncle Larry".... "there's Uncle Larry" lol
@@GuitarGeorge55 the guy is incredible. his videos make you think creatively about your approach to guitar.
Brett these have been incredible! You and Tom are making some great content!
Man, the depth of this guy’s ability and knowledge is pretty astounding
Yeah and it never seems to end!

Sure thing!

Much respect
"Don't let it intimidate you, let it inspire you" at 43:22 - I'm now more inspired as a grandpa, than when I was younger - thanks guys!

Christmas come early! What a treat...what a treat!!!
Thanks for checking it out!
So great Tom mentioned Gordon Motte (lovely ❤)and Jacob collier. So true.
First of all, fuckin hell! Does one need another talk beyond this? I’ll be coming back to this one forever so thank you for that. If Tom could talk about the southern rock blues rock things a bit, put one song on the lift for us, that’ll be awesome. Thanks Brett Papa for this video!
Sure thing!
Props to giving the great Steve Morse some love right out of the gate. His solo in the middle of "On the Pipe" is one of my favorites of all time.
TB, what a fantastic player!
