The Knowledge and technique is immense here ...... But the personality of these incredible Guitar players are the greatest part of this to me. So much respect. So happy guys likie them exist.
The best thing I did after 30y of playing wss to just find the resolve notes for a key, amd then explore around it using my ears. Oz is spot on: you can just fool around as long as you resolve right. And then you start to get the feel of a root resolve, a 5th, a 3rd,a 6th etc. It becomes instinctive and it's so much fun to jam alone. Every mistake is a learning experience.
Oz’s teachings approach to “outside” playing is the only time it ever made sense to me. Hes a remarkable player but extremely musical. Masterclass on truly two very different titans having a talk. Great stuff! Thanks Papa, this is gold
This is amazing , Tom is a legendary player but so humble and happy to be leaning from someone else , you can tell he just loves the guitar more than anything .
Dude I literally laughed out loud when Oz was talking really complex harmony and then Tom starts explaining the lick in tablature form and Oz was like "what are you talking about???" and Tom was like "tablature" and Oz was like "Oh. I don't do tablature." LOL!!! This was an absolutely phenomenal session. It was like being behind closed doors with Luke and Obi-Wan or something.
Oz is something, bastard says, I'm not a jazz especialist ha ha ha he is a monster, always innovative and sweet. can play absolutely EVERYTHING. happy new year
Ever have that nightmare where you go to class and you forgot your assignment? And you try to sit quietly and play close attention and hope you don't get called on? Yeah, that's where I am. And then it turns out to be an awesome class... PS Tom is doing a stellar job of moving the narrative along and keeping it interesting and useful. Oz is so fresh and innovative. What a wonderful combination you've brought here! I'll be watching this many times.
This concept of two pro players playing and teaching each other is so valuable. I've watched the Kirk and Kenny one about 5 times trying to borrow a few ideas.
I was taught that the mi7b5 chord functions as the ii chord in a minor key while the fully diminished 7 chord is really an incomplete 7b9 chord (with no root) so Bmi7b5 sounds like ii in the key of Ami while Bdim7 is an incomplete G7b9 chord (the V chord in C or Cmi). Pat Martino has a really cool lesson in Guitar Player from the 70s where he takes a full dim7 chord and lowers each tone in the chord a half step, making 4 different V 7th chords with the lowered note as the root. These guys are both beautiful.
That Pat Martino concept … take a Diminished 7th and raise any one note, you get 4 different Half-Diminished 7th chords; lower any one note, you get 4 different Dominant 7th chords. - Take any Augmented triad, raise any one note, you get 3 minor triads; lower any one note, you get 3 major triads. - SYMMETRICAL PARENTAL FORMS is the name for this awesome lesson of his!-
Tom, is the master of interior design. Creates beauty within the space allotted to him. Oz, is simply the architect. Sees all possibilities of what can be done. Much to learn from both of these guys .
Uncle Larry’s playing is on another level man. No disrespect to any other player out there but little Tommy’s groove is otherworldly. It’s not even like it’s rehearsed. “Hey Tom, how about this progression?” and off the cuff you get the best solo you’ve ever heard. It’s not like it’s a fluke either. He does that shit all the time. That’s what happens when you’re willing to work hard but you’re also gifted. He’s top of my Rushmore. No doubt in my mind.
Lee burgess. He’s more like a piano player in his phrasing. He’s also knocking out melodies from non diatonic chord progressions straight from the sound in his head directly to the fretboard.
I have never wanted to play more, but I get it. After 38 years I am starting to get pretty good. I feel like I could actually hang at this jam. Compete for work? Maybe not so much, but add to a friendly jam? You bet.
Another brilliant session with the pros. This just emphasizes why its so important to learn from all genres of music. It just gives you so many options in your playing!
This was unbelievable! I would love to see Oz on tour with Tom! That would be one hell of a show. They play so differently. but at the same time really complement each other's playing.
How cool is it that Tom has zero ego in this session. Oz's harmony and depth of the knowledge is clearly more advanced than the "street theory" school Tom comes from and it’s so cool to see Tom so excited at the prospect of learning new things. Oz is obviously a serious badass. But of course so is Tom and you can see him absorbing and processing some of what Oz is doing in real time. That speaks volumes about Tom's gifts and instincts as a player. Two masters of their respective styles.
but after watching the whole thing u clearly see how oz also gets why buk is so special-the way his solos are “statements” is something oz was obviously gonna be thinking about 😉
@@jeremyversusjazz Yeah, it was pretty interesting to see Oz admit that the more melodic/lyrical playing in a diatonic context is challenging for him. Two different worlds.
Best guitar open mind guitar talking I've ever seen thank you Mr. Oz and Bukovak Thank for all the great questions and great explanations who came out of it And a big thank you to Mr. Papa for bringing these two together 🤘
This was an awesome lesson. Like Oz said, understanding the harmony/chord-scale relationships he's talking about take a long time to understand. That said, it's not rocket science, and it's stuff you would learn in a music degree or college program, or perhaps in some private lessons. Mastering them and blending them with your own style like Oz is a different story. I would encourage anyone interested to not be afraid!!
Oz is so great playing over changes. Such a hard thing to do well and he does it effortlessly. Tom isn’t afraid to learn from him despite being so great himself. Great humility.
Absolutely mind freaking blowing! All very talented but Tom approach to RUclips is SO good. Its completely new and refreshing.A simple conversation about music between extremely professional musicians LOADED with little nuggets of goodness.Thank you all for doing this, especially you Brett, for hosting this…this is something entirely different and it speaks to me way more than any other online courses …well dome
This is beyond gold: it's diamond! Can't thank you enough for posting this treasure. It's a masterclass in playing and, more importantly, learning and listening. Watching two accomplished musicians and players exchanging notes on harmony and melody is a damn good reminder that there's not such thing as "I know it all"!
Tom's thought process around composing (he said write down, but it's in his head) a short solo, based on a unique melody he can sing as a departure from the song's actually melody...that is super helpful advice...and deceptively simple sounding...and OZ said "that is hard", because it is at the same time. It sure helps if the song is singing to you in the first place. Thanks, guys.
29:42 I'm 54 and this is exactly what I'm working on right now since I started playing once a week at a jazzy jam, I've never been a jazz player either, I started with classical guitar and then I've played rock and progressive and a bunch of other stuff but never jazz standards, so now I'm exploring exactly this, when you solo based just on the key it's like you are playing over/on top of the chords but when you play following the chords it's like you're playing inside of them, like your solo intertwines within the harmony. Cool stuff. Mixing both is cool too.
uncle larry scores a win and shows how well he is able to go toe to toe with world class musicians. all the home skoolers should be impressed as am i. Oz Noy equally a bad ass musician like little tommy!
I'm a few years behind a lot of this stuff but I just can't stop watching. Sitting in my car outside home after a 12 hour shift and these 2 are just incredible! Thanks brett!!!!

Just goes to show you that you can never forget that we are all students of the instrument no matter what level we are at. Forget that and you may as well give it up.!! Great jam !! Great video!!!
This is a super cool video. This is a really good idea for a series actually, two guitarists that don't normally play together hanging out for an hour? I would watch the shit out of that
The Oz strat tone is so clear yet textural, the notes have lots of character. Tom’s hands, everything is just beautiful… but uncle Larry can get tough if he needs to. Great vid.

This is one of the most inspiring guitars videos I have ever watched. It's giving me a lot of ideas and nuggets of information. I will be returning to this time and time again.
Great video! It's always fascinating to me that you can have 2 guys like this, that are both essentially limited to the same 12 notes, yet each can approach the same progression from completely different directions and still sound completely complimentary to each other. The discussion of the concepts is great and I'm going to steal so many licks from that section, but even if the whole video was just that final jam it would've been great. Thanks for posting this and letting us all be a "fly on the wall".
Awesome!!!! Thanks Brett for hosting and a big thanks to Oz and Buk for sharing their knowledge and curiosity with us! Made my day, so much to take in. And to top it off, those last couple of jams were amazing!!!!

Crazy - Oz having to teach Uncle Larry “Rhythm Changes.”’ That’s what’s great about music, there’s *always* something new to learn, wherever you are in your journey.
I‘m a Drummer but for me it was such a pleasure to see two of my favourite guitar player talking to each other and share their secrets. For me Oz‘s rhythmical approach is so deep and fundamental, I’ve never heard this complexity of odd meters and grooveplaying on any other guitar dude
Absolutely on another plain of existence. So creatively off the cuff and non stop flowing within each other’s realm of musicality. So, so, so good for the souls of humanity. Can’t thank you enough for this gem of goodness.
uncle larry is dead on from the git go about that behind the beat stating of the melody oz does on that tune-it’s just sick-as-F!! thnx brett for putting these two monsters in the ring together!
@@BrettPapa of course buk admires oz. all the baddest nashville cats “get” Oz’s thing. i saw him in austin a few years back and beyond his incredibly original take on jazz/funk/fusion, he also “played” his pedalboard like no one id ever seen-deploying different pedals for a single bar sometimes then two more for four bars then back etc all while never skipping a beat-literally. the next night i saw him mingling in the lounge at another venue before a robben ford show and i said hello-he was gracious and cool as a cat.
I'm 10 minutes in and already learning a ton. Major heavy hitters in this video. Have you ever considered showing what your production setup is? Are both amps running into the OX's behind Oz and into an interface of sorts?
Thanks Brett for bringing this. Such a great video with two great guitar players. Saw Oz live in the Netherlands last december and was really blown away. The true love for playing guitar oozes from this video, amazing and very inspiring!
Astonishing seeing such masters enjoying each others musical concepts. I really do think Guthrie Govan is possibly the only other person who would also be in his element with Oz and UL.
I learned more about music in an hour than I've ever learned before. One thing after another that I've been perplexed about. And, Tom, what a well adjusted person you are. I would have been more than happy to think that you already knew everything.
Absolute terrific session, teh way those two cats are able to sound so different at the same time so passionate and interesting is a fabulous thing. Thanks to you all
Great free form session between these two legends.. It's awesome to see Tom Bukovac getting excited about the possibity in learning something new.. makes me want to pick up my guitar and play along.. actually just did :D
So effin cool to see them together! This was great to watch an listen to two cats from seemingly different worlds of the same instrument and "talk story" about what they find challenging and rewarding about each one's experience. Thank you Brett for this😁 BTW, those are beautiful guitars.
Those Lenny Breau harmonics are sick!!! I remember seeing Larry Coryell taking those to another level... He must have worked for a long time to get them to the point he was performing them at. Fast, smooth and seemingly without effort during live performances. You guys have inspired me to work on these "harp harmonics" again. I also prefer standard notation to "tablature"...it wasn't around when I first started learning, just never took to it. Great video full of great topics. Thanks so much for sharing!!!
I'd love to see an episode with Tom and Jack Ruch. They are two of my favorite, tasty and melodic players that always seem to have the best note choices, and don't over play. Hook it up Brett!!!
49:45 @tombukovac that's been bugging me as well :D I've got a few thoughts.. ;) first of all, the diatonic 6 for the Gm (vi. chord in Bb) is a minor 6 (eb) and is conceived as an "avoid" note over the vi chord. it conveys the aeolian character, but wants to resolve DOWNwards - the chuck berry movement going upwards fights that. the major 6 leaves the key and goes to far out to fit into the chuck berry chord rhythm - so no viable option either. NOTE: when playing 1-5-6-b7 on the V chord (that is f-c-d-eb), the eb works and is not perceived as avoid note - the relation to the bass note (or chord degree/function) is everything. to keep the rhythm, over the vi chord changing from the 5th down to the fourth works, 4th to 5th works, 5th to 7th works - but you knew that already for sure. just "avoid" the avoid note. @501chorusecho #my2cts
Thank you for this - the half-whole / diminished tips are a treasure. Tom a fine human being to be so self-deprecating and full of humility as the awestruck student.
It’s an absolute pleasure to watch fish out of water moments between the two of them and how they work to jump into each other’s fishbowls on a given concept. Real pro communication here. Tom comes from such a place of pure curiosity, enthusiasm for his instrument, and he’s so present. Oz’s fluency is just masterful.

Awesome tune!
Glad you liked it!
So cool to see these discussions and jams. Some amazing playing in here.
Thanks for watching!
uncle larry is dead on from the git go about that behind the beat stating of the melody oz does on that tune-it’s just sick-as-F!! thnx brett for putting these two monsters in the ring together!
You are welcome! It was Uncle Larry's idea. More Oz coming soon!
@@BrettPapa hey brett do u know what frets oz has on that custom shop strat? Maybe it came up off camera? Thnks!
So good. Thank you fellas. Redeeming the internet again. 🤘🏼
I'm 10 minutes in and already learning a ton. Major heavy hitters in this video. Have you ever considered showing what your production setup is? Are both amps running into the OX's behind Oz and into an interface of sorts?
Awesome! Yeah I got a studio rundown video coming soon!
@@BrettPapa If you mention the OX could you maybe go over what OX cabs you use? Not sure if this has been in a previous video or not
Thanks Brett , bringing all these great guitarists together for us to see is incredible !
Sure thing Fred!
Wish I had the dedication to get this good at anything 😂
Haha me too!
Thanks Brett for bringing this. Such a great video with two great guitar players. Saw Oz live in the Netherlands last december and was really blown away. The true love for playing guitar oozes from this video, amazing and very inspiring!
Sure thing! Was a blast to film.
A few more lessons and I think these guys are going to be pretty good. It seemed like they were really getting the hang of things toward the end...
Folks ,I'm lost for words ,you d*** right you know what youre doing. The both of you guys rock .. keep doing what y'all do .and thanks 👍
Astonishing seeing such masters enjoying each others musical concepts. I really do think Guthrie Govan is possibly the only other person who would also be in his element with Oz and UL.
Yessir totally agree😊👍🏿
Matteo Mancuso and Josh Meader
I would love to have him on at some point. Mind blowing player!!
It'd be fun to hear Greg Koch adding his .02 cents. Guthrie and Oz together is a scary thought though.
@@johng2880 Agreed how about Jack Pearson?
I learned more about music in an hour than I've ever learned before. One thing after another that I've been perplexed about. And, Tom, what a well adjusted person you are. I would have been more than happy to think that you already knew everything.
Uncle Larry's been rockin' the SG lately..Love it! 🤘
Yeah it sounded awesome too!
@@BrettPapa Yes it sure did! Thank you for all you do Brett!
I thought he might have sold it so it’s nice to see it again.
No matter how good a player is of any caliber we are all like a sponge trying to absorb all styles and ideas to make our own little ideas.
Awesome Job
Absolute terrific session, teh way those two cats are able to sound so different at the same time so passionate and interesting is a fabulous thing. Thanks to you all
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you Brett for this😁
BTW, those are beautiful guitars.
Oz Noy! Master!
A gentle man.
For sure. We will be bringing him in again soon.
The moment you realize you’re a total guitar hack…. I don’t understand half of what they’re saying,but it’s cool!
Yep exactly how I felt Will lol!
Half you say, for me 10% would be generous. Still freaking amazing though.
I remember when Oz first broke big in NY many years back, I was on it immediately, his style has always appealed to me.
Yep he is a beast. We are having him come in to do a course soon. Can’t wait.

You just showed everyone how great you truly are
Man…..never understood a word they said..but just couldn’t stop watching…..fabulous….
Haha!
Thank you for this - the half-whole / diminished tips are a treasure. Tom a fine human being to be so self-deprecating and full of humility as the awestruck student.
OZ NOY! Love his playing and personality
Yep terrifying player and a funny dude as well!
Yep they are great together. Hopefully more Oz coming soon.
Oh how I love the sound of that strat! What a great video!
Thanks for tuning in!
Just fabulous. So much to learn here. A little glimpse into how the mind of how the best players approach things! Invaluable!
Thanks for checking it out Joe!
BRETT THANKS FOR GETTING THESE TWO BROTHERS TOGETHER !!!!!! WHAT A TREAT. I SAT AND WATCHED TWO MASTERS AT HELPING EACH-OTHER HAVE FUN AND GIVE EACH OTHER SOME GREAT TIPS. THANKS TOMMY AND OZ
This was actually Tom's idea and I was happy to help of course! So fun to watch them.
Man! Straightforward awesome! Thank you all, really… so nice to watch, so much to learn. Great content!!! 👏👏👏
