  • As promised, the first installment of what will hopefully be monthly collaboration videos between Uncle Larry and the legendary Gruhn Guitars store in downtown Nashville TN.
This amazing store has been around since 1970.
Filmed on Thursday April 6th 2023
    Starring:
    Greg Voros
    Corey Terrell
    George Gruhn
    Uncle Larry
and five bitchin’ old Fender Stratocasters, all with “field replaceable necks”….just like the 50’s Fender catalogs claimed.

Hey Tom-what do you think of humbuckers in strats? It's a mainstay of the 80s 'session guy', Landau, Huff and the gang but seems completely against your rootsy aesthetic/sensibilities.

No, how about we just go back to the 90s? Pretty sure we were all getting along back then.

No way to delay the trouble coming since the 60s, at least... Artists who've died of old age were singing, when they were young, about society crumbling around them. And it was! Long before Blockbuster died, Fotomat died. Long before that, everyone wore suits - even homeless people wore suits. A bathing suit was an actual suit, almost. Society's always crumbling, because people are barely tamed apes. Happy Easter! Do you realize, if Jesus rose from the dead, that makes him a zombie? What the heck?!

First time I went in a 50's strat was sitting there front and center right when I walked in the door. First vintage Fender I had laid eyes on and I was awe struck. One of the guys at Gruhns saw me and said, go ahead and pick it up! It blew me away how cool they were to me. They've been like that each time. Cool video, this is one of the foundational vintage dealers around. Now that Mandolin Brothers is defunct (RIP Stan Jay) this is one of the very last of the "old ones". George was very kind to me in providing some gratis feedback about my oldest Gibson, 1947 ES-300. Not a particularly desirable instrument, but very sentimental to me as it is THE guitar (belonged to my uncle) that sparked my interest. He'd let me look at it laying on a bed, I could touch it but not hold it. I was absolutely fascinated by it. It became mine when he passed.

44:26 made me tear up for gods sake. I’m going to the wood shed with that one. Tom the the man is
“ THE MAN” Tom inspires me like no other, and he can take me from a shitty day, or moment every time I watch him play and just make me want to work at it so much harder. I know I’m way to old now to ever be that good, in fact it might take me two lifetimes to be “ that good” but damn if I could even get 10% of that gift I’d be content. He’s so cool as a person, super nice and just has fingers that are there that we can’t see, that’s the only way I can explain the sound of his chords! Lol. Tom if I hit the 1.1 billion mega millions tonight expect a call. I’ll give you a few million and a trip with your kids to any place in the world of your choice with any guitars and gear and I just want a month of lessons. I’ll buy the beer too. Seriously thank you for sharing your talent at a deeper level on these videos. Guys great video, beautiful guitars. Love maple, but for band and live situations more than recording. They cut. Roasted maple Novos are magical. Every one I played.

Oh. F*. Yeah. I've been looking forward to this one. My Hero, I am learning SO much from you. Yours are the best guitar and coolness-teaching videos out there. The chord shapes thing you talked about was something I didn't realize I had already been doing, but it makes me think about it in a whole new way. I'm actually practicing a teeny bit. Thank you!

    Tom,
I love everything on this channel!! I remember having and old strat that had a static problem with the guard. Sometimes I could feel it building up! It would also a times, make static popping noises when my fingers would brush the guard. A guitar builder friend of mine called the phenomenon "premature static discharge"🤣 I would occasionally rub the pick guard with a fabric softener ... It seemed to help. FWIW I love both maple and rosewood, but I feel like the rosewood would probably sit in more mixes.

Hi Tom, I just got back from a 3-day run of shows in Nashville. It was the first time I've been and I had a great time. Of course, a pilgrimage was made to Gruhn's, and I wound up talking with Corey about Danelectro guitars. What a good day, and a such a relaxing atmosphere to play in. Thanks for the videos and just putting out positivity in general.

Tom, this was wonderful. I really enjoyed being a fly on the wall for this great Strat comparison, laced with expert opinions, reminiscing, and a star turn by the man, Mr. Gruhn his own self.
Thanks for making this part of the musical universe accessible to those of us who so appreciate it. You are truly providing a public service.
