George Gruhn
Uncle Larry
and five bitchin’ old Fender Stratocasters, all with “field replaceable necks”….just like the 50’s Fender catalogs claimed.
Hey Tom-what do you think of humbuckers in strats? It's a mainstay of the 80s 'session guy', Landau, Huff and the gang but seems completely against your rootsy aesthetic/sensibilities.
I prefer putting a Strat pickup in the bridge position of a les paul
@@501chorusecho Ha ha, of course Tom-cheers from jolly old England.
truly funny
@@501chorusecho Now .. THAT would be interesting!
@@Nozmo_King_NJ yeah…it’s called a “Superpaul”
This channel is the center of sanity for me ! The world has gone completely nuts , you’re one of the few holding it together. Thank you for a little brightness in these dark times!
I agree with this statement.
Yes. I can forget the constant anxiety of society around me crumbling. I always hear, “you just want to go back to the ‘50s”.
No, how about we just go back to the 90s? Pretty sure we were all getting along back then.
True That...upside is downside. Tom is helping keep sanity for sure..Have a good day brother.
100% agree with Michael
No way to delay the trouble coming since the 60s, at least... Artists who've died of old age were singing, when they were young, about society crumbling around them. And it was! Long before Blockbuster died, Fotomat died. Long before that, everyone wore suits - even homeless people wore suits. A bathing suit was an actual suit, almost. Society's always crumbling, because people are barely tamed apes. Happy Easter! Do you realize, if Jesus rose from the dead, that makes him a zombie? What the heck?!
I work a mile from Gruhn and have never wandered down there until a week ago after watching your videos. As a bedroom player, I didn’t think they had much to offer me. I was wrong. I met Corey, great guy. Everyone there treated me super. I’ll definitely be back.
Good to know Crash!
Yes! This series is already starting off to be fantastic! Thank you to Mr.Gruhn ,Greg V , Corey and, of course, the inimitable Uncle Larry!
Fer Sure Tom's friends are as great as he is!!
@Jess Yates Indeed they are. Just good people.
That we can all be that 4th dude in the room for this is a blessing. Then George walks in and it gets even better. Thanks again Unc!
Greg Voros is the coolest dude. We shared a table with him and his wife at Tom's birthday show and he was kind enough to buy our dinner. What a sweetheart of a guy!
Their two faces watching you play, pure love and awe! That is a perfect impression of most of us sat gazing at our phones every video...
Great Tom and Amigos. Love y'all talking about Stratocaster's. I'm in heaven Guy's. Much appreciated.Kindest Regards Mick.🙏🆒️🇬🇧🎸
I'm all smiles. I've watched this episode twice. It's that good!
This channel is the best thing I have seen, maybe ever and I have seen a lot of stuff. Keep going !!!!
Holy smokes! I knew Cory a million years ago back at tiny little Royal Music on Long Island, had zero idea he ended up at such a legendary place. Love it!
This is great. Thank you guys for spending the time to do this. This channel is the one safe worry free place in the world to just get lost in the music and discussion. Great guitars ...topped off by an epic segment with George ... sweet
Happy Easter to everyone!!!! Tom, you let us have a seat at the table and I have so much pleasure to be have a chair and sit listen to everyone. Much love and respect.....
Wishing you a Happy Easter too Mr Darrin ❤
Tom Bukovac, Sir - Thank you. I really can't say it enough. Humbly and from the bottom of my heart. This channel is such a fantastic addition to so many of our lives.
Tom, the one thing about the Home Skoolin community you have built, is the people are genuinely friendly and respectful...99.9% of the time if I leave a comment it is met with respect and I want to treat everyone with the same respect. You have built a strong and dedicated community which leaves out all the bullshit with politics and the craziness of cancel culture....Peace and love to everyone....And no, I'm not a 60's flower child...lol.
Except when I said Paul McCartney was replaced in 1966, people got upset lol.
ya im not into communities but the homeskoolers are very classy, high quality indivduals!
@@TeleCaster66are you the numb nuts that started all that? Jesus
@@taggmanibanez Oh my Gawd, reminds me of my 7th grade class on being fixated on the OPD Patch on McCartney's Sgt Peppers jacket sleeve. We all were completely obsessing and buying the rumor...How in the world did that whole thing get started? Did the Beatles do it themselves as a goof? I hate to break it to you guys but he was, in fact, replaced by a very young Engelbert Humperdink!
Michael you sound political.
Number 3. You sounded awesome playing that. Man....I'd love to own a guitar shop just to watch you play. Dude....
Great video. Truly entertaining but, highly educational. Lots to be gained by following and watching Uncle Larry. Hats off to you sir.
Great show. Very informative watching you play each of those. Guitars are the most fun thing! More than golf... and I like golf.
Truly amazing! thanks a mil!!!
What a fantastic education in tone and craftsmanship!! Just once I would love for Greg to set up one of my fave guitars! SO much knowledge in that room! Thanks Uncle, as always!
George Gruhn is the most charming man. That alone made this a special episode. Thanks again, Tom. You rock.
My guitar got a mention from Greg! It’s the LP Custom in their shop for a refret. Gruhn’s is amazing and all the people there are very cool. Never would have taken it there before becoming a Homeskooler. Can’t wait to get it back. Thanks Uncle Larry!
I've had my '79 Custom for over 20 years and I finally had it refretted last year. It just brought the guitar to life. It always sounded good, but now it feels amazing. One of the best moves I've ever made. Enjoy!
Mine is a 72’. Had it since 84. So psyched to have it done at Gruhn’s. Hope my experience is same as yours!
Yep... fascinating. This series is going to be well worth checking out. Thanks guys
That riff you're playing around 44:22 is a hauntingly beatiful piece of music. Almost hated the way it was abruptly cut short. Such a great melody.
Great video as always. My daughter and I were once taken up to the 3rd floor so I could play a burst they had (the first I had ever played). They were so kind and nice to us.
Wow, that was awesome. U- Larry you are so freaking good. Thanks for the show, and those strats are so sick! Great stuff.
With this sort of quality , an hour + video feels like about 20mins. Love it, thanks, Tom. Thanks Greg, Corey and of course, George. 😎
Another Master Class. I love it and I need more of it - enough said. Thank you Tom!
Omg. That falling progression from 24 minutes was special. I’m going to work that out for sure. Thanks Tom. 🙏🏼 Tim
Even his friends marvel at what he does every time he picks up a guitar. Mr. Bukovac, you are the real deal! Wow!
.
This is wonderful. As a lefty player I was glad to hear us part of the discussion.
so cool!!
Really awesome episode full of insights. Thank you for sharing all that knowledge ❤
Thank you to Tom & Gruhn Boys... Absolutely amazing, from the amazing Tom B. guitar playing with Greg memorized watching these incredible sounds coming from these awesome vintage strats being played by the guitar God Tom B.....then to culminate, King George walks-in with with his awesome valuable guitar information that's always amazing to us guitar maniacs. God Bless you all and thank you for making America Great Again, Love you guys.
Thank you Uncle Larry! your channel keeps getting better and better all the time
Corey is a great guy. I was in Nashville with my son on his college break a few years ago and we were checking out all the guitars on the 1st floor. He asked us if we wanted to go upstairs and see some of the high-end stuff. I told him I was not going to make a purchase that day and he said "I didn't ask" and took us up there anyway. I got a picture holding a '54 Strat. It was a great day and made my trip to Nashville even better. Great store! great people!
Tom is putting everyone he loves and respects on the map. Names and faces rarely in the spotlight to the outsiders. Absolutely incredible cat. He took everybody on a deep dive into the inner workings of the Nashville scene. People, Places and Things that make it all go. Tom. You are a National music treasure. Nice job.
spent the day out of town for my son's basketball, to return to Beer, Wings, and the Boys a Gruhn Guitars!! What a perfect way to cap off a fun day. Incredible to find this waiting for me!!!!!! Thank You Gents!!
Any of your vids that include Greg Voros is a 10 for me. He’s the man when it comes to guitar talk like this. Thank you!
That was a gas to watch! Don't know why I didn't watch it when it dropped but sure happy I watched it today.
Great video Tom - to build on George's comment, I like the rosewood as it CAN simulate more of an acoustic sound when dialed in.
Priceless video. Well done. George at the end was the perfect touch.
George Gruhn just seems like the loveliest sweetheart of a man with a super deep knowledge well of everything it sounded like. What an awesome life he’s lead.
It seems like it would be easy to set him off on a rambling discussion of super interesting guitar nerd (which I def am) stories and details, with one good question, like Tom did. Then I'd just sit back and bask in all of that wonderful lore.
Thanks, Tom!
What an interesting video! Thank you Tom, Greg, Corey and Mr. Guhn!! What a wealth of knowledge in that room!! One thing that I found very interesting is what each of those guitars brought out of you when you were playing them. Each guitar an amazing instrument that sounded great in your hands, but they all inspired you to play different things. Like a sculptor finding the figure hidden within each piece of stone that they work!! Can't wait for the next episode!!
Just watched this video twice. Once for the conversation and to listen to the point of the video. Second, just to watch your right hand technique. My lord…Thanks for another gem, Tom.
Gawd DAMN this was a great episode!! Thanks fellas.
Great video!! I enjoyed it so much and felt so connected with you nerd fellas 😆 I would do this everyday all day, keep this Gruhns videos coming!
This is why you need them both ... horses for courses . Enjoy the ride .
Such a cool video. Can you talk about the amp and pedal set up at all Uncle Larry? Love these vids man!
Amazing! All of it. A couple of hundred years of experience shared. Best part is the last minutes with George. Have George provide a closing story every time.
Greg is one of my favourite guests on Homeskoolin'. Guy is always an absolute wealth of info. Looking forward to more of these.
44:24 amazing 🥲 a sad song for a sad man. It get me every time
Fun episode!
So good. Thanks to all. Loved the Wook playing wirh Guthrie. Looking forward to that albun.
Fantastic!! The Wookie Session was fantastic as well!!
Those guitars have been waiting their entire lives to sound that good!
Once again... Thank you Tom for taking us with you!
Always amazing!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸😎
In the hands of a great player, it all sounds good to my ears. Another gem of a video, thanks UL!
AMAZING playing!!!
Thanks Uncle Larry for introducing yet more knights to the music round table . Y’all know ..
The life quest to seek and create endlessly the holy grail of tone is noble .
Much gratitude
Such a great and fun video. I loved it!!! More of these please. Thanks Tom. Cheers
Priceless demo of these strats and the subtle and stark differences between the guitars... This is the next best thing to playing the guitars yourself. I've always noticed that when I play a guitar or an amp, pedals, etc..... different guitars "want" to be played different ways. This is also a great demo of that. I love these videos!
Hiya U.L! Thanks for posting this video - I loved it. Felt like I was right there with you guys.
Please, please, please would you consider doing the same but with 50's Telecasters next time?
Lots of love and respect from Wales,
Daf x
Great discussion! Lots of good points to consider when looking for a Strat.
Last summer, while on vacation, I brought my wife and three boys to Gruhns. It was a pilgrimage for me. Corey recognized this and was incredibly kind and made the experience that much more special. Thank you Corey.
So good to see Greg again …….hope he’s feeling as good as he sounds and looks. Thanks Tom. Yet another 99 yard touchdown
Awesome place. I was upstairs when they were taking apart Buddy Holly stuff
I love this type of content and discussion!…So fascinating!
Just love how the Gruhns guys are struggling to keep massive grins from appearing on their faces! Well I would just be open-mouthed at Tom playing like a guitar great! Such a great idea! Keep 'em coming!
Hey dude I come from a musician's family and I am a musician.. I discovered your channel a little while back ..I knew your name but I didn't really know you. And i very rarely comment on RUclips channels.
One night I just sat down and watched one of your videos where you were talking from your kitchen and I realized not only are you a badass player but your just like all of my Dad's musician friends and the guys that I hang out with..
Then I watched the video where someone asked you what person has the most soul and you and I both replied at the same time Ray Charles! Now now you got a friend for life brother.. you and I are about the same age and I played send me professionally on and off and after several years of not playing I am back and I'm going to give it hell.. having access to channels like yours and others who are in the big league but not household names are very encouraging to the guys like me who are still in the trenches dreaming of moving forward.. thank you
Solid gold! Keep 'em coming Uncle Larry! 😎
I love these behind the scenes episodes. It is cool to see a musician compare his preferences with guys that work on guitars for a living. Fascinating comparison. Thx Uncle Larry
I've been to Gruhn's several times over the years and they are the nicest crew bar none. They are so down to earth. First time I went in a 50's strat was sitting there front and center right when I walked in the door. First vintage Fender I had laid eyes on and I was awe struck. One of the guys at Gruhns saw me and said, go ahead and pick it up! It blew me away how cool they were to me. They've been like that each time. They've even been super cool when I've interacted with them online. So nice
Agreed, rosewood necks have a warmer "after-taste" than maple ones. But the maple necks feel slipperier to me than the rosewood ones. I've had both but am now down to a single strat and I did keep a maple necked one.
Tom , much thanks to you , Guthrie and the guys for streaming all of us into the studio . It was a pleasure to become a fly on the wall 😊
Absolutely awesome!
Love uncle Larry and gruhns.great video🙏
They each got a place! Great episode’s content!!!
at 20:20 yes Ive seen the static pickguard problem. Doesnt always cut the sound out but a quick discharge "SPIT" in the guitar signal makes a take un-usable. Sucks.
Greetings All! I love Strats, and own a variety of 3 (I know, not many), an American Standard w/Rosewood neck, which balances out the highs.. a Squier, which plays beautifully and has killer Blues tones.. and an SRV Strat. Looking for my 1st Les Paul.. Thanks guys! All of those guitars are beautiful and sounded great! 👍🎸✌️😎
Yoda came in at just the right time, ROSEWOOD BABY! What a great video, looking forward to more of these Gruhn’s vids👍Your awesome Buk, loved watching the Gruhn’s fellas while you played, just sweet magic bud👍
that was great - gotta dig all the tasty playing on some astounding strats
44:00 what a beautiful melody , and that works with the maple big time …. The rosewood has more clean bass sound and more clarity !!!
One thing missing from the comparison... the SMELL test....We will never get sick of videos like this Larry! Please keep them coming
Dang....uncle L...I think I'm born agin mapleboy......Also great info about the truss rods and thin necks! My current fav is a MIM Jagstang 2022 with very slender neck....and the old style truss rod, where you got to loosen the neck to adjust it down by the neck pickup...maybe that's why they used that style?
Cool video, this is one of the foundational vintage dealers around. Now that Mandolin Brothers is defunct (RIP Stan Jay) this is one of the very last of the "old ones". George was very kind to me in providing some gratis feedback about my oldest Gibson, 1947 ES-300. Not a particularly desirable instrument, but very sentimental to me as it is THE guitar (belonged to my uncle) that sparked my interest. He'd let me look at it laying on a bed, I could touch it but not hold it. I was absolutely fascinated by it. It became mine when he passed.
Great debate. Lovely guitars: knowledge and a great player. Love it.
Pure gold. Thank you.
Special to get an early Saturday morning session. Thank you.
44:26 made me tear up for gods sake. I’m going to the wood shed with that one. Tom the the man is
“ THE MAN” Tom inspires me like no other, and he can take me from a shitty day, or moment every time I watch him play and just make me want to work at it so much harder. I know I’m way to old now to ever be that good, in fact it might take me two lifetimes to be “ that good” but damn if I could even get 10% of that gift I’d be content. He’s so cool as a person, super nice and just has fingers that are there that we can’t see, that’s the only way I can explain the sound of his chords! Lol. Tom if I hit the 1.1 billion mega millions tonight expect a call. I’ll give you a few million and a trip with your kids to any place in the world of your choice with any guitars and gear and I just want a month of lessons. I’ll buy the beer too. Seriously thank you for sharing your talent at a deeper level on these videos. Guys great video, beautiful guitars. Love maple, but for band and live situations more than recording. They cut. Roasted maple Novos are magical. Every one I played.
Your channel is not only a chance to see the incredible feel in your guitar playing but a window to all the great people in the business. It's cool to see how much they all respect you as a guitar player and a friend. Another interesting video.
Oh. F*. Yeah. I've been looking forward to this one. My Hero, I am learning SO much from you. Yours are the best guitar and coolness-teaching videos out there. The chord shapes thing you talked about was something I didn't realize I had already been doing, but it makes me think about it in a whole new way. I'm actually practicing a teeny bit. Thank you!
Great stuff, man ! So much appreciated the information 😌.
wowza! so much fun. you know about experts? these men are XPERTS ! yeah
Tom,
I love everything on this channel!! I remember having and old strat that had a static problem with the guard. Sometimes I could feel it building up! It would also a times, make static popping noises when my fingers would brush the guard. A guitar builder friend of mine called the phenomenon "premature static discharge"🤣 I would occasionally rub the pick guard with a fabric softener ... It seemed to help. FWIW I love both maple and rosewood, but I feel like the rosewood would probably sit in more mixes.
Excellent video, thank you for doing this. I loved every minute of it!
Awesome video. Thanks Mr.Gruhn ,Greg V , Corey and Tom.
Hi Tom, I just got back from a 3-day run of shows in Nashville. It was the first time I've been and I had a great time. Of course, a pilgrimage was made to Gruhn's, and I wound up talking with Corey about Danelectro guitars. What a good day, and a such a relaxing atmosphere to play in. Thanks for the videos and just putting out positivity in general.
I Love his explanation of Tommy Bukavacs playing here 👉49:18 and Bukavacs responses as he’s explaining it, just a buncha cool ass fellow gen X’r guitarists vibin out to some badass guitar playin.😎🎸🎶🔥
Tom, this was wonderful. I really enjoyed being a fly on the wall for this great Strat comparison, laced with expert opinions, reminiscing, and a star turn by the man, Mr. Gruhn his own self.
Thanks for making this part of the musical universe accessible to those of us who so appreciate it. You are truly providing a public service.
George is a national treasure!!!
