Man, I'm blown away by this masterclass - this is the sort of thing that helps make Homeskoolin the best guitar education channel ever. There are depths here that musicians of any level can learn from and appreciate. From this one short session of two masters of their craft speaking through their instruments, you could get a lifetimes' worth of musical wisdom - whether it's improving your soloing vocabulary, your writing, your understanding of chords and harmony or a million other things. Thank you, Tom and Bryan.
So cool to see our hero gushing over another player. It’s as if Tom has been admiring Mr Suttons playing on this session and we’re lucky enough to be part of it. Thanks fellas.
To just throw out, “ … was on stage with Billy Strings recently … “ AFTER mentioning touring with Bela Fleck? With no air of arrogance whatsoever, to share contrasting musical performances at the absolute highest level. Hats off to Mr. Sutton for being so damn personable! Thanks again, Tom, for your effort in sharing these understated, mini master-classes.
I have been playing guitar for over 50 years, can't read music. I play bluegrass, i have no idea what the hell you guys are talking about, but i love it and it just sounds beautiful!!!
This is pure gold. Sussing out those magical transitional notes when playing over changes is truly an art. Bryan is one of those players who is overflowing with ideas. I’m recovering from surgery on my right thumb, and that’s severely limited my picking. I’m finding that’s really become a blessing. Because I’m only able to play a few notes per measure, I’m suddenly able to play lines that I’m hearing in my head. It’s a real thrill to finally get a taste of what master improvisers can do. While Bryan was playing, I heard either alternative lines or notes that continued a phrase he played. At 70 years of age, it’s great to feel that this old dog is still teachable. Thanks guys for a 12:38 treasure trove of inspiration. By the way, one of my favorite two chord progressions is a minor 2 chord followed by a major 5 chord (“He’s So Fine”, “My Sweet Lord”, et al). Gets me every time.
Damn.....some heavy musicality underneath some super sweet melodic playing. I've been a Sutton fan (as well as a Tom fan) for a long time. I'm in NC so Bryan was always on the local radar so to speak. A couple of acoustic guitars in the right hands is a beautiful thing. Certainly a great investment of 12 minutes.....great stuff.....
You two are freakin’ national treasures. Love Uncle’s Larry’s face at 2:25 when Bryan hits “the NOTE!” - we’ve all been there hearing our favorite song. What a fun video!
This is in the running for best episode ever. Great concept: “what are you thinking when I play this chord?” Showing inside the heads of two masters. Wonderful!
I love to see the joy on Tom’s face when Bryan hits one of the magical notes or does a run over Tom’s chords - makes me smile! To see two masters so in love with their craft that they take time during a session break to share their wisdom is amazing and so appreciated. It’s like being the proverbial fly on the wall watching artisans at play 😊
Tom is so great because he’s a sponge for knowledge. Love the relationship and mutual respect he has with so many musicians. I didn’t understand most of what you two just said …but I loved it all the same.
Did Brian get a fresh haircut just for this video??? Lookin' sharp and sounding amazing!! And Tom, just watching your level of admiration for him is as joyful as the playing. Your humility and hunger for learning is a just as inspiring as your playing! Thanks for sharing all these gems with us
Thank you, Thank you...Always fun when Bryan and you are together talking shop, we get a front row seat to 2 of the all-time Greats, you guys are the GOATS!!!!.
Man, just to have the opportunity to sit in like this and learn from people like y'all is a blessing. I appreciate what you're doing for us, Uncle Larry. Did I read correctly that you're working on a course with Brett Papa, or was he referring to making more RUclips content with you?
Dudes! Killer session talk! Please give us a three minute video of full improvisational using your favorite chord progressions. No talking, just stack those resonant chords and pull out a melody. Us aspiring musicians want to hear more of this!! Thanks!
This such a great freaking idea. There’s nothing quite like this on YT. I mean, there’s plenty of instructional guitar nonsense, but this is awesome. Got my guitar, tried to play the game with y’all. I can hear why my note choices ain’t quite getting it, without worrying trying to cop some dude’s style. Super cool.
Loved The Darlin's, aka the real Dillards as the backing band, when they appeared on the Andy Griffith show. "There Is A Time" is a beautiful original composition by them that was featured on the show.
Ya know.... at 57 Years old, I am not nor ever have been a fast player. I love hearing it, just not my bag. My moto is.... Play what David Gilmour would play (I am a country chicken pickin, Eric Clapton, Albert Lee (David Gilmour) wanna be lol. He can milk a hole note into "2" hole notes (lol) and it's awesome. You and Bryan are are great players, "BUT!" when you say money notes, This is what ya do. Props and just (Tears in my eyes) admiration. Love your channel Tom! :)
Two comments from me for this one. Greatest video ever. Thank you both. Tough to come up with but more like this with changes and feelings for melodies. Thank you thank you thank you
Obviously there is no substitute for spending time on the instrument. I love what you two are doing here. I just take pleasure in any little thing I can learn and love when it starts to come together. I am not a player but I am an advanced listener. Lol Thank you so much.
Just love it Tom when you get together with Bryan. What is so impressive is that you two have such a vast musical vocabulary immediately under your fingers. It is easy to technically understand what you discuss about the changes (something i can sort of do)....it is a universe way to have all that immediately at the ready. These videos ALWAYS produce amazement and admiration, but they also inspire to keep on working musically in my meager way,
This is so cool. Thanks for sharing that little lesson on chord tones. Super helpful for this amateur struggling guitar player. And thanks also for those bluegrass suggestions. Totally new and interesting stuff to me.
Bryan, Like Gordon , is a pure Joy to watch with dear ol uncle larry
Yes, 100%
And such a relaxed and ‘quiet’ right hand. So smooth
Every time Bryan Sutton is on is my new favorite episode.
Best guitar channel on RUclips because you never know what you’re gonna get!
Thank you, Tom and Bryan!
Incredible Pile Of Gold! I can't believe how beautiful Bryan's tone is. I'm massively inspired to suck less at guitar after seeing this.

That Bryan Sutton seems a talent, he might be going places
😂❤
Split the Nobel prize in tone to these two chord wizards who actually understand music at the highest level. Loved this episode!
Conversations in words, conversations in sound. “If you know the vocabulary….” Masterful and so incredibly down to earth. Thanks gentlemen.
So cool to see our hero gushing over another player. It’s as if Tom has been admiring Mr Suttons playing on this session and we’re lucky enough to be part of it. Thanks fellas.

This needs to be a regular segment: Uncle Larry with Cousin Bryan, you guys are the best.

That is some real deep shit Tom,

Man, those acoustic guitars have a life all to themselves...
I’ve watched this four times now hoping someone could shed some light on what they are doing…I feel like I’m in the deep end of guitar playing
Two masters of their trade! tis a beautiful thing!

Bryan plays so beautifully, thanks to both of you for sharing this time with us out here in Internet Land.
This kind of stuff is just invaluable, thanks Tom and Bryan.
Brian’s tone on “Spin you Around” is amazing listened to it 20 times just because of Brian’s guitar tone.
Thanks Brian
I assume you’re talking about the acoustic playing in the new version of Morgan’s song but how do you get the info on who played on it?
I assumed he did since he has done most of Wallens acoustic. Then I looked it up and it said it was him on acoustic
So good!!! His guitar has so much character to it on that song
Tone for days
This video just reminded yet again how much I don’t know. U guys are awesome

Thank you, Thank you...Always fun when Bryan and you are together talking shop, we get a front row seat to 2 of the all-time Greats, you guys are the GOATS!!!!.
What a great idea for a video! You can learn the theory, the scales, the chords, but this is where all that comes to together to make music
Gosh that WAS the note that made it cool ... mellow goosebumps!
So grateful for this. Thanks Tom and Brian!
That was fantastic! Tom, thank you so much for introducing me to people like Bryan. I never would have been exposed to this stuff otherwise.
Solid Gold here Uncle Larry...Thanks!
By far the most solid video of the series and that’s saying a lot. Thank you both
Just like that. How bloody good!
The joy on Uncle Larry’s face is what playing music is all about.
This is the stuff I'd miss most if the internet was taken from us. Thanks for sharing your brilliant guitar minds with us gentlemen.
Every time I see Bryan Sutton I want to go unplugged. But I have given up on that dream 😅
