I'm not even that good of a player but even I still have 4 picks close by when playing my dreadnought. It came to me pretty naturally, I'm glad to see this validated by a pro player of Bryan's caliber
It is never lost on me that these are world-class players. The best of the best, just giving us tips, lessons, insights, and more for free. All because of this thing that one of their peers started on a whim. I’m sure Bryan Goddamned Sutton has better things to do than give a basic lesson on developing your internal clock. But there he is, of his own accord, gifting the benefit of his knowledge. Same for all of the guests Tom’s had. And lord knows there aren’t enough words to thank Tom himself for all he’s done to help us put more beautiful music into the world. Always grateful that this community exists. Thanks for the insight and inspiration Tom and Bryan.
Bryan’s little piece about timing is invaluable. I know many who need to see this. And I mean that in the nicest way possible. Timing is CRUCIAL, people!
So old Larry knocked out two triples in a row and was back on another session today, right as rain. It’s a beautiful thing to love what you do for a living.
Never has the sound of an acoustic guitar stood more in reverse of the way it looks! Bryan Sutton's Martin sounds as beautiful as a priceless gorgeous acoustic guitar can sound, but it looks like it's been dug up out of a southern swamp. Him tapping on the top and it resonating in the key of "E-ish"... WoW!! Thanks Uncle Larry for the inside look!
Absolute pleasure when you two get together. Besides just basking in the friendship and goodness in the room, I always learn something new. Thanks for letting us get to know Bryan a little better and hear some of his musical magic. What a gem.
Bryan has been a big inspiration for years now. Love everything he puts out, I keep hoping for a new solo record but he seems to be content doing this for now.
Very Nice....Uncle Larry taking the class on a field trip into the studio with none other than the one and only Bryan Sutton....Such a cool hang, thanks Tom, for taking us along for the ride...you are the best!!!!!
That just made me laugh! Bryan is such a master, the tone he gets, even playing fast, is just fantatastic. And the respect and love he has for a dude from bar bands is just amazing... What a great channel this is, thanks for showing us the depth of musicianship and soul these guys have.
Bryan Sutton is incredible and his lesson on rhythm was terrific. Besides being a badass, he’s a really great human being. Thanks for having him on your show Larry.
There isn't enough time in the world for Uncle Larry, Brian, Guthrie, Jedd to show us all the Cool Licks they know....let alone spend time mastering them....but I am game for giving it a try... THANKS BUK!!!
it makes me happy that 2 of the absolute top gun guitarists are still in awe and hip to Jerry Reed. For 98% of people he was the country comic foil to Burt Reynolds but goddamn.... the greatest thumbpicker and composer of all time. I've heard a lot of players try to do his stuff, but no one has matched let alone topped him in his style. His resume is astounding, in case ya'll never dug into it. What a life that man led.
Yes indeed, one of the best live performances I recall seeing as a kid, was on one of those 70’s-era Saturday evening country variety shows my Dad watched (of which there were many: Porter Wagoner, Bill Anderson, Glen Campbell, Hee Haw!, etc.). It was Roy Clark and Jerry Reed licking back and forth...seemed as if their fretboards would burst into flames!
I was just listening to Thile's "Raining At Sunset". Bryan's guitar work on the tune is transcendent. There is video of him and Chris doing the tune at the Merlefest midnight jam.
Bryan is such a humble, sweet man. Even in the midst of being such a talented and revered musician. It was good to see even a Maestro like Bryan, humbly struggle with slowing down that riff. That a Maestro like him can still struggle with something musically/instrumentally, yet not let that struggle influence him at all, helps us novices understand the long road ahead. That even the best professionals still struggle. Fucking great vid!!
And where's Bryan going? To go practice in a corner somewhere. Steve Coffman said,"You think this talent grows on trees? We go home and practice." Thanks again, Unc!
I've got a pick that I absolutely love, and it works for all my styles of acoustic guitar and mandolin playing - been using it for probably 5 years. But everytime I listen to Bryan talk for a bit I pick up ideas like trying other picks for different sounds.
So much good stuff in this episode. If you want to be able to play anything remotely complicated on the guitar while singing, you totally have to do what Bryan talked about. Something has to be unconscious, either the singing or the guitar part (usually the guitar part). Cuz you can't be thinking about both of them at the same time. In Rick Beato's Stewart Copeland interview, he talked about how much work Sting had to do to be able to play the Police bass lines while singing.
Yea, I'm not going to try and hide it - Bryan is definitely my favorite Home Skoolin" guest (next to Vince Gill and Gordon). I thoroughly enjoy the deep dive into the "minutia" and learn a TON from it!
Thanks Uncle Larry and Cousin Bryan, Cousin Joey! this made my day! Agreed on all points! Beers on me Lads, I'm buyin' when I come to town end of June to see Messi. You guys are welcome at our tailgate for the match! Stop by!
Man, the guitar has a resonate sound that is mind blowing and Bryan is top notch! What a learning experience in tone and talent! Trading licks is what it's all about, and could you get any better in a acoustic player? This is fantastic ! Thanks Uncle Larry!
The depth of knowledge and level of detail Bryan has is astounding.
He's fuckin insane!
Probably not much more than we have in our chosen trades.. but he ended up in a very cool place.! Ended up on the right road….
@@joeurbanowski321 I think it's pretty clear he is not a garden variety guitar tradesman.
True dedication and keen observation. He’s a true master.
Man, I love these little excursions with Mr. Sutton!!
oh man! "the picks, yea thats my eq.." THIS is SO important
😂Just what I need to watch in the midst of my finger style pursuits. I get sidetracked so easily. Now I wanna go work on my flat pickin’.
I'm not even that good of a player but even I still have 4 picks close by when playing my dreadnought. It came to me pretty naturally, I'm glad to see this validated by a pro player of Bryan's caliber
I think the musicality of Bryan in combination with that old D-28 ‘Bone is just simply breathtaking.
i couln't agree more .. .
Unbelievable the way that guitar sounds even through an iPhone mic
An in depth interview with Bryan would be amazing, perhaps during that one hour or so a month when he's not practicing..
Damn, Bryan even knows how to make one note sound amazing!
Bryan's acoustic is so resonant. Wow!
That 36' D28 is insane --one of the best in existence

man I LOVE Bryans playing so much, u guys just have great chemistry together, musically and just as 2 dudes hangin too
Man, I’m so grateful this show exists.
Easily, my favorite thing on RUclips.
Bryan’s little piece about timing is invaluable. I know many who need to see this. And I mean that in the nicest way possible. Timing is CRUCIAL, people!
Damn the sounds of that old beast of an gift of a guitar was increadable
Was just about to comment the same. As great as what they were saying is, I got distracted by Bryan's touch and the tone of that old Martin.
Yeah that sounds great, I want one.
Yeah that tone and resonance was something else.. just wow
indreadable
One of the best in the world says “I’m gonna go practice” on his way out the door while on his lunch break
💪
How lucky are we to be exposed to these brilliant people? Thanks Tom!
I love hearing Bryan shout out Vernon and Nuno! Y'all have fun!
I think I smiled about all 16 minutes of this episode. Thanks, gentleman.
Waiting patiently on the podcast
What a monster player Mr Sutton is….and that guitar…😍
Every moment of Bryan’s playing is masterfully beautiful!!!!
Cheers from Brno, Bryan. it was amazing show.
What an amazing sounding guitar and I could listen to Bryan just "goof" around all day. What a treasure, thanks Uncle Larry!
Thanks so much for this post man - you are a friggin legend! Bryans rhythm tip at the end was brilliant. Love your work. Cheers
I have difficult days ahead - I will learn rhythm using Mr. Bryan's method. Thanks to him.
This level of resonance is what guitar makers have been chasing for decades in their production processes. That's unbelievably amazing sounding.
If I had that Martin, then I'd be happy... 😊
That Martin AND Bryan's talent.
So old Larry knocked out two triples in a row and was back on another session today, right as rain. It’s a beautiful thing to love what you do for a living.
good lord does that guitar Bryan is playing sound amazing... like perfect thank you
The reverb in that herringbone is gonna keep me up tonight. Geez…what a guitar.
Fascinating how different the sound can be with the smart use of different thickness os the picks !
What a wonderful player. The sound he creates is incredible.
Bryan is a monster and a gentleman in the same skin. What a human. Thanks for these great looks and sounds, brother!
Bryan Sutton - Frisell's Rag is fantastic!!
Now I know what acoustic guitar perfection sounds like...what an amazing sounding instrument!
The layers of the cake. WOW
So much fun to listen to Bryan, both his playing and commentary. such a gifted and generous person.
I've never heard an acoustic guitar ring out like that. That's spectacular.
Wow, what a lovely sound out of that guitar, fingers..
Love hearing Bryan. Was lucky enough to see him at the Ryman last year with Bela. Was incredible to watch him live
Love that guy... but damn... that guitar!!!! It rings for days!!! Love it!
Mr Sutton is so inspriring to hear. That guitar placed in his skilled hands... pure magic
Absolute pleasure when you two get together. Besides just basking in the friendship and goodness in the room, I always learn something new. Thanks for letting us get to know Bryan a little better and hear some of his musical magic. What a gem.

Very Nice....Uncle Larry taking the class on a field trip into the studio with none other than the one and only Bryan Sutton....Such a cool hang, thanks Tom, for taking us along for the ride...you are the best!!!!!
He is my favorite guest for sure. His musicality flows so natural. And I love hearing the conversations. Thanks!
If I could play like Brian, THEN I'd be happy!
Haha
I wish you well but I’m afraid he’s a once and a generation player.
Yeah, I'm just being funny. 😁
The whole "then I'll be happy" thing cracks me up.
I love when Tom has guests on the homeskoolin show! And I love Brian! Always a pleasure to listen to him play.
That just made me laugh! Bryan is such a master, the tone he gets, even playing fast, is just fantatastic. And the respect and love he has for a dude from bar bands is just amazing... What a great channel this is, thanks for showing us the depth of musicianship and soul these guys have.
HAHAHA thanks for sharing Tom - fly on the wall - awesome.
Bryan Sutton is incredible and his lesson on rhythm was terrific. Besides being a badass, he’s a really great human being. Thanks for having him on your show Larry.
I love your friends. Gordon and Bryan are top notch, thank you for giving us a glimpse.
Bryan Sutton day again in Uncle Larry’s neighborhood. Always a good day
Incredible episode with many golden moments. Bryan has phenomenal talent AND skill. Love that dude too. Cool for Skool!
I can’t believe that guitar is unplugged and recorded on iphone!
Best guest. I watch these many times. Ty
There isn't enough time in the world for Uncle Larry, Brian, Guthrie, Jedd to show us all the Cool Licks they know....let alone spend time mastering them....but I am game for giving it a try... THANKS BUK!!!
For real!
Uncle Larry and Cousin Bryan, you guys are a great. Love eavesdropping your studio viists.
That guy is amazing. He has great touch and beautiful tone.
These are some of my favorite Uncle Larry vids. Love seeing you with your friends and hearing their perspectives.

I love these types of clips Uncle Larry. Talent galore. I've been schooled! Cheers!
Here to formally request a full length 2 hour version of you and Bryan Sutton nerding out like this. I could watch this all day long.

Thank you Tom. Love these episodes with Bryan.
Bryan Sutton is a Zen Master! Thanks for featuring him on the channel so often.
Bryan is the best acoustic guy around. Always learn something with him. Thanks for this Little Tommy!
Good gosh almighty! That guitar is the definitive example of "piano tone."
These in-studio videos are priceless. Thanks, Tom!
Amazing playing and style. Thanks for getting us some Bryan time, Uncle Larry.
Very interesting description of why he chooses Bryan Sutton. What a nice gentleman!
I was just listening to Thile's "Raining At Sunset". Bryan's guitar work on the tune is transcendent. There is video of him and Chris doing the tune at the Merlefest midnight jam.
That is some seriously nutritional music.
Man I freakin' LOVE this channel. Bryan is a complete gift of a player. Thank you, Unc!!

Yes, Bryan is my favorite guess, for certain!!
Oh my... this guy is amazing on guitar. And I never thought about different sound from different picks
Pure friendship, knowledge and positive vibes!
These episodes with Bryan are the best! I wish we could get more in depth interviews and lessons. Thanks again for a great video!
B Rad just showed/taught the whole world the most basic MOST important lesson.
Wow, what a phenomenal guitar player!!!! Awesome
And where's Bryan going? To go practice in a corner somewhere. Steve Coffman said,"You think this talent grows on trees? We go home and practice." Thanks again, Unc!
What a great sounding old Martin .. a true workin' man's guitar! Oh, the tales it could tell! This is fascinating, especially the pick eq concept.
I've got a pick that I absolutely love, and it works for all my styles of acoustic guitar and mandolin playing - been using it for probably 5 years. But everytime I listen to Bryan talk for a bit I pick up ideas like trying other picks for different sounds.
It’s cool that you share your workplace with the homeskoolers.
Great detail of a session musician.
Thanks uncle. 😎✌️
Just completely stole the bluegrass heart lick! Thanks Bryan!
Too much fun you guys!
This is wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

Bryan Sutton "I'm still working on that." Me, too ;-). Cool vid. Love the “Hey Man Show Me A Cool Lick” premise.
Yea, I'm not going to try and hide it - Bryan is definitely my favorite Home Skoolin" guest (next to Vince Gill and Gordon). I thoroughly enjoy the deep dive into the "minutia" and learn a TON from it!
