Happy Birthday, Dario. I met you at the festival in Ramelton in Ireland a few years ago, I was 25 at the time and was near the beginning of my journey in Gypsy Jazz. Your playing and what you said was very inspiring to me and encouraged me to keep going and working. I am 32 years old now and will keep working at getting better at gypsy jazz and playing and writing music in general 😊
@mattdowie92 ciao Matt, thank you! Yes of course, I remember very well! Wow, 32, you are still so young and you were already very good at 25, never stop, you have the best yet to come! All the best, will be curious to hear you and see your progress🙏🎶😊

Great reflections. Thank you for sharing and happy birthday! I’m a 65-year-old adult violin learner. Only started any sort of music when I turned 40. The comparison trap is very real for me when playing with others who started at age 5! A trap that I need to keep reminding myself not to fall into. Finally, the other curse of advancing age, arthritis, has hit and is limiting my mobility and is this that is really made me understand and appreciate the importance of Music in my life and how it can more than compensate for some of the more physical things I was able to do 5/10 years ago and as a sportsman in early adulthood. Looking for positives, I can now practice and play more.

Happy 50th. I’m a professional guitarist the same age as you who’s been in the game for about the same time, although I chose music as a full time career since I was 13 years old. I’ve been an MD now on a cruise ship for the last 16 years and still feel a deep and never ending love affair with guitar. I admire all musicians on their journey. @@DarioNapoliGuitarLearning musical instruments is my passion at 77. Guitar is my obsession. Everyday. Soon as I wake up. Only stop for exercise and food. I feel like a teen-ager. No need to make money or be famous. Gigging was showmanship rather than creative. Doing what the audience wanted is the profession and deserves being well paid. Being on TV was stressful. Your videos were an inspiration to me since many years ago and continue to be. I turned 54 recently and I am looking forward to every practice and time with the instrument. A person's overall disposition and mindset reflect age more than a number.
Happy birthday! This is nice advice and wisdom, thanks for sharing. What resonated with me the most was about reducing distractions, mine are similar to TV but more modern, like youtube/social media/videogames, and the part about community and relationships and how everything needs time to grow. I feel a lot of times that what I'm doing is not paying off fast enough, but looking at it like a marathon or a garden that needs time to develop, I think is a good way to solve that, because as long as you are doing things well in the moment, and being active in music, patience will (hopefully) get you to the other stuff.
@horatiuromantic Thank you for tuning in Horatiu, and for your response!🙏 Some things one becomes aware of over time, others happen sooner, but as long as the goals are clearer, the intention will be more directed and specific. All the very best, keep in touch😊🎶
HEY THERE BIRTHDAY MAN- HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Honesty, consistency, be straight and avoid distractions- very sound (pun intended) council. You show up and do your best- you can be proud of your values- your experiences. BRAVO!
Lovely jazz, in the beginning of this video. Good work !! Very melodic, with enough sophistication to make it interesting, but not just simply a display of technical prowess: Well done.
Congratulations on turning 50! I picked up the guitar at 65 (now 68) and started playing gypsy jazz. Progress is slow; slower than for a young person. It's going to be a long path, but I wouldn't be trying if I didn't expect to be here for a couple more decades. I am completely comfortable that others will learn and play better/faster/more-creatively. There's no time left for ego. It's the music that makes me happy.

Happy Birthday Dario!😊I met you last year at UTTS. You took me with you in your Doblo ( in tour-mode, I think ) from Napoli to Borgo Solario. So you are still libra, just like me - I turned 68 almost a month ago and I'm still learning ( sometimes, at least ). Thanks for your inspiration. Would like to join again. Have a nice day😊
@joachim22335 ha! Ciao Joachim, yes I remember very well! Super, I will be announcing news about this year soon, which will be year 10 (unbelievable 😅). All the very best in the meantime!🙏🎶😊
I’m the real failed musician. I’ve had the real job built a studio bought all the instruments and can make my own demos and it doesn’t matter without bandmates. I don’t have anyone to play with in my area anymore. They’ve all moved or gave it up. I’m 45 and facing having to move to Nashville or Asheville to be able to play again.
I agree completly, I'm 65 and feel like 30, playing with my Quartet makes me happy specialy playing on the street, I practice every morning, without music (and love) my life is useless!

By the way I see you played at the BIMHUIS Amsterdam, I am born in Amsterdam and in my youth I spend every weekend at the Bimhuis wich was then a very small club, saw many greats like Archy Shep, Chet Backer, Joe Pass etc in the 70's great memories!
Dario questo video mi è stato estremamente utile perché sono da qualche anno anch’io ho deciso di perseguire il sogno di diventare un musicista di professione. Le tue parole mi hanno commosso ed allo stesso tempo motivato a continuare a camminare su questa strada. Grazie mille e ancora tantissimi auguri 🎉
I went the other route and got a traditional job. However, I still play guitar everyday. I have played with many of my guitar heroes through camps and clinics. I could have been a really good guitarist but haven’t had the time to develop it like I would have if I were doing gigs on a regular bases. Life is a trade off. I am set to retire early and plan to spend a lot of it focusing on my never ending journey to be a better player. Bottom line, music makes the world a better place. Keep on entertaining folks with your skills and talent.

@MarkJVSomers yes of course, that could be a topic for a whole different video, or course even😊 in general, I think in terms of focus in the order of things, or what to concentrate on first, to save time and frustration
Quando senti che la musica non può che essere il tuo piano A allora senti di essere fortunato ma anche maledetto, visto il posto dove ci troviamo (specialmente se si vuole far musica di un certo livello). Veramente un bel video pieno di spunti e consigli preziosi. Grazie!
I am not really sure how you "failed" as you seem to be pretty successful as a musician under your own terms. However, there is some very good advice for all the younger musicians who want to make music a career. I have been a part-time musician for over 25 years now and I turned 50 earlier this year. It has not been easy, which is one of the reasons that I am a "part-time" musician instead of full-time. The hardest thing about being a successful musician in addition to everything you mentioned is believing in yourself and not giving up. A healthy ego is essential but so is humbleness and modesty when needed.
@christopherjones1649 totally agree;) I didn't have enough space to write it on my thumbnail but the title should have been "I failed, according to those who measure success in terms of spotify streams and brand deals"..I'm overall happy with my career and it's direction, although of course I strive to improve in every aspect. All the very best in your path, thank you for tuning in and for your input, I appreciate it very much, stay in touch😊🎶🙏
About the intro of the video : I would be so happy if i could just play regulary in front of 10 ppl in different places in my town as a musician ^^ Not every ppl wants to be signed i a major label, have millions of streams, etc... My goal is just to share music with ppl :)
Thank you for sharing with us! Currently approaching my 30s, i'm trying to figure out how to get those gigs before having musicians involved in the project, any tips? Should i have some social media videos to share with owners of the gigs? (hope i can make it to tonight zoom call since i have a fever 🙏)
@marcelloestemiele ciao Marcello, thank you for tuning in:) having videos and any kind of material relative to your activity as a musician can definitely help and should be a goal to have. There are several ways, it depends on the specific venue. If it's an established venue, you should try to get to know the owner or booker in person and develop a rapport, if they have a jam go to it and make friends with all the people, staff, sound people etc. If it's just a simple venue, ask if you can simply go play with some friends acoustically at a time convenient for them and plant the seed that way. For bigger events, you definitely want to have the highest possible quality material, a couple of good videos, maybe some press, good photos, but also there, it's about getting to know the people that make the decisions...I hope you get better soon💪😜

I said to him i am busy as teacher at the Franz Schubert Konservatorium in Vienna and as organist at the Church where Schubert worked, i am not a youtuber... Intelligent people will take seriously my infos and believe that they led to results
@LearnCompositionOnline congratulations on your achievements in music but not sure what you mean, I'm not a youtuber, I'm a musician who uses also youtube
More than 99% of musicians are just regular people and no stars. Just like other people with other professions. That´s completely normal. It´s an elitist snobbish approach to reserve music for a few people. And interestingly enough most of the musicians who are really famous are not professionally trained, or at least did not study an instrument at the university. They are also just people like you and me, who have that extra kind of magic in them, or good relations or just luck. Don´t let snobbish people drag you down. I listened to snobbish people and both - their words and their music - is rubbish.
Would you count romantic relationships and family as unnecessary distractions then? Cause they definitely compete on the zero sum game that is allocation of time...
@mathieupe666 I think it depends on the person and the relationship. While the things I mention in the video in my opinion are 100% negative, a relationship and family have the potential to be just as negative if not more. At the same time, if the relationship is healthy, then there's a potential that they can add a lot of value to your life and if they really have your best interest in mind, they can be an incredible asset. So I think it truly depends on the person. But I agree, one must learn to be very selective of the people they decide to surround themselves with, including family..
@robertpirsig5011 well, when you compare income to other artists in other genres, there are significative differences...but it's the choice I made, and the music I love is the one I play
Hi Dario. Happy Birthday. I agree completely what you say. I am turning 67 nowadays. Music is a beautiful journey. Jazz Jazz Jazz you never know what’s coming. Best Wesley
No you're not bragging or boasting about looking younger at 50... You're just stating the obvious: The life span of people, averagely has increased, therefore LOTS of people look younger than their respective ages. It's nothing unique about you, Dario, in this regard. Of course you didn't make a decision to go all into music, when you were young. The music biz in inherently unstable. Unless you like gambling with your career, a person would not make the choice to go ALL into music. Additionally the supply and demand situation for musician jobs, is just ridiculous. Here's the main retirement program for lots of musicians: Have a wife that has a day job. This is not to mention that being a musician is hard on a marriage. Just the temptations, alone (think barroom women, drugs, alcohol) are stressors on a marriage, and family. This is not even to mention being away on the road for weeks at a time, and the effects that has on a musicians personal life. There were a lot of reasons for not going ALL in, when you were young. (PS: Notice that he talks about his students. There it is: Unless you're a rock star, you've got to be a teacher of music, in order to meet the bills. And, that is teaching, that is not being a musician. Notice that he's not counting exclusively on being a musician.) Despite my cynical comments, this video is good. He does a good job of explaining the kind of mental processes that a musician has to go through, in order to align himself with reality, and an alighment that is comfortable (don't try to be someone else, and don't try to live someone else's "recipe" for occupational stuff and passion stuff, find your own blend of these things.) He is speaking from experience, and at his age is dialed into reality (rock star fantasies went by the way side, quite a while back for him, it appears.) If you don't already know the realities that he states, learn from his words. I would add one thing to what he is saying: Do some solo gigs. If you can do solo gigs, it will strengthen you as a player and performer. Playing solo requires you to do more, and therefore you develop more skills and you increase your self confidence. You can always play with a band, but not all band members have what it takes to do solo gigs. This is because it requires more from you to play solo. For musicians this is analogous to lifting weights for athletes. The more resistance you overcome, the stronger you get.
@KenTeel I personally include my teaching in my musical journey, infact I would say it's almost an equal exchange as in I often feel that I also benefit greatly from engaging in it, almost as much as my students
@@DarioNapoliGuitar Yes, I've been a teacher, too. And, as it is said: If you really want to know a subject, teach it. I admire good teachers for their interest in helping other people. However, when we talk about musicians, my opinion is that being a teacher and being a musician are two separate categories. They both can be occupations, but they are very different. A lot of people think that the term musician, means a person who makes his living from performing. This is an illusion, by an large, as lots of musicians are also music teachers, too. So, I like to clarify that when a person talks about being a musician for a living, although not said, they are also teachers (in addition to performing.) Thanks for your interesting video. I really like it. Your words of wisdom about finding your own path, is very good. As an old man, now, who has been involved with music since the 60s, I've lived what you're talking about, and can nod my head in agreement with lots of what you said. Well done.
@KenTeel I very much appreciate your input Ken! Would be lovely to hear about your experiences from the golden years of music, which I'm sure offered their difficulties, but my gosh, what energy there must have been in the air...😊🎶
@@DarioNapoliGuitar You're right, the 60s in particular, after The Beatles ramped everyone up to get involved with music, had a lot of energy. Lots of kids (teens) wanted to be in bands. It was an inspiring time. And entertainment options were limited, as we had no internet. We had top 40 radio and few TV stations. So "do it yourself" was definitely on the menu, and music was high on that list for a lot of people. People used to entertain themselves with hobbies, and social (actually in person) stuff. It was a time, a place, and a technology. The girls liked musicians and paid attention to them, and that was a pretty powerful incentive. Yes, it was different than today. Today, you play because you love it, not because of the social perks. There are none, compared to the 60s. Now, you're just another band or player, on RUclips. The general public yawns. Now, you play because you love it. DJs have taken the place of live bands, in a large percentage of venues. Fortunately, playing musical instruments will always serve in a mental health capacity. So, players will still be plentiful in numbers. You said it, brother, the golden age... and it was full of debatchery and excitement.
@KenTeel wow...when I just think of how much better instruments and amplifiers were when compared to today in many aspects...oh well, I guess one can't change the macro elements of an era, unfortunately we are where we are today and we do the best we can. I still get to do a fair amount of touring in northern Europe but we'll see if instrument-based music can survive the advent of AI...
50 anni davvero?

I feel a lot of times that what I'm doing is not paying off fast enough, but looking at it like a marathon or a garden that needs time to develop, I think is a good way to solve that, because as long as you are doing things well in the moment, and being active in music, patience will (hopefully) get you to the other stuff.

@quentinos59400 absolutely valid goal!

@@TimothyShor hehe, and a really great guy:)
@dominikprauseguitar totally true! I appreciate your input Dominik🎶😜

Beautiful music, were is the failure?
@robertpirsig5011 well, when you compare income to other artists in other genres, there are significative differences...but it's the choice I made, and the music I love is the one I play

Throw out your TV... and then your smart phone...
