    Interesting perspective of the "A shape". Unlike the other two shapes D and F, the A shape is modified from the open position. The A shape triad from the G, B, and E strings in the open position is xxx220, then moving up the fretboard one must add the E string fingering, thus xxx331, xxx442, etc. Like most of those who have posted comments, it is an abridged version of the CAGED system for the treble half of the strings. I guess we could call it XXXDAF. Great insight, look forward to more. .

    Just found your channel and have “Subscribed”, and looking forward to building my Bluegrass repertoire. This lesson it basically a blend of CAGED system with the Triads on the first three strings. I started this journey to improve my lead play doing an acoustic gospel gig at my Church and it’s been working pretty well. These triads and their positions relative to the chord I’m playing are becoming second nature in almost all of the keys. However, being I’m playing gospel music I’m being hit with learning odd scales of Eb, Bb and F. Lol, who knew that so many songs in this genre are in these keys. The presence of pianos in most gospel songs is the reason for this occurrence. Lol, oh well it expands my game

    How is the three shape method different from the CAGED method?

    • @buckcola5751
      @buckcola5751 Год назад +1

      I can tell you how. There's no such thing as the 3 shape method. It's B.S. Just look up triads. Lots of really good lessons. Active melody has some great lessons on triads.

      Is there an F in the word caged? Lol

      @crosbycofod5052 Год назад +2

      The F chord just stems from the E shape!

      @@buckcola5751 Obviously there’s a disconnect in your understanding of the method… and the overall point of CAGED.

    • @v2807
      @v2807 Год назад +1

      It’s a subset of the caged method. And, obviously, they’re played only on the top 3 strings. It is easier to think of only 3 shapes. Like an introduction to caged. Or maybe more like a practical application of the caged method.

    Btw it is perfect and tried and true by every guitar player there is. If would be much more helpful to students to tell them the truth instead of trying to pretend like this is some method you came up with way back when.

  • @buckcola5751

    These are not 3 little shapes you figured out. These are major triads. There are minor triads, dom 7 triads ect. They are found on string sets like bottom three string E B G, next 3, B G D and so on. The 3 shape method lol how misleading

    • @TypingHazard
      @TypingHazard Год назад +4

      It's not as bad as you're making it out to be, it's more of a minified alternative to CAGED that apparently lives on the top 3 strings; F is standing in for the E shape, probably because F is entirely closed while E has two open strings (or maybe it's because FAD is easy to remember, idk). It skips C and G likely because C is redundant in just this case since a C shape and a D shape are essentially indistinguishable on just the top 3 strings, and any shape that maps onto an open position G would omit a note in the triad.
      It's pretty hard to argue with success and Bryan Sutton is definitely one of the most acclaimed flatpickers currently living. Even if this is a "mini-CAGED" it has a similar application, seems an okay place to start at the very least.
